Counting faces of nestohedra
A new algebraic formula for the numbers of faces of nestohedra is obtained. The enumerator function $F(P_B)$ of positive lattice points in interiors of maximal cones of the normal fan of the nestohedron $P_B$ associated to a building set $B$ is described as a morphism from the certain combinatorial Hopf algebra of building sets to quasisymmetric functions. We define the $q$-analog $F_q(P_B)$ and derive its determining recurrence relations. The $f$-polynomial of the nestohedron $P_B$ appears as the principal specialization of the quasisymmetric function $F_q(P_B)$.
Hadamard Equiangular Tight Frames

An equiangular tight frame (ETF) is a type of optimal packing of lines in Euclidean space. They are often represented as the columns of a short, fat matrix. In certain applications we want this matrix to be flat, that is, have the property that all of its entries have modulus one. In particular, real flat ETFs are equivalent to self-complementary binary codes that achieve the Grey-Rankin bound. Some flat ETFs are (complex) Hadamard ETFs, meaning they arise by extracting rows from a (complex) Hadamard matrix. These include harmonic ETFs, which are obtained by extracting the rows of a character table that correspond to a difference set in the underlying finite abelian group. In this paper, we give some new results about flat ETFs. One of these results gives an explicit Naimark complement for all Steiner ETFs, which in turn implies that all Kirkman ETFs are possibly-complex Hadamard ETFs. This in particular produces a new infinite family of real flat ETFs. Another result establishes an equivalence between real flat ETFs and certain types of quasi-symmetric designs, resulting in a new infinite family of such designs.

We introduce the Hopf algebra of quasi-symmetric functions with semigroup exponents generalizing the Hopf algebra QSym of quasi-symmetric functions. As a special case we obtain the Hopf algebra WCQSym of weak composition quasi-symmetric functions, which provides a framework for the study of a question proposed by G.-C.~Rota relating symmetric type functions and Rota-Baxter algebras. We provide the transformation formulas between the weak composition monomial and fundamental quasi-symmetric functions, which extends the corresponding results for quasi-symmetric functions. Moreover, we show that QSym is a Hopf subalgebra and a Hopf quotient algebra of WCQSym. Rota's question is addressed by identifying WCQsym with the free commutative unitary Rota-Baxter algebra of weight 1 on one generator, which also allows us to equip this algebra with a Hopf algebra structure.

We express the integral form Macdonald polynomials as a weighted sum of Shareshian and Wachs' chromatic quasisymmetric functions of certain graphs. Then we use known expansions of these chromatic quasisymmetric functions into Schur and power sum symmetric functions to provide Schur and power sum formulas for the integral form Macdonald polynomials. Since the (integral form) Jack polynomials are a specialization of integral form Macdonald polynomials, we obtain analogous formulas for Jack polynomials as corollaries.
Chromatic quasisymmetric functions of directed graphs
Chromatic quasisymmetric functions of labeled graphs were defined by Shareshian and Wachs as a refinement of Stanley's chromatic symmetric functions. In this extended abstract, we consider an extension of their definition from labeled graphs to directed graphs, suggested by Richard Stanley. We obtain an F-basis expansion of the chromatic quasisymmetric functions of all digraphs and a p-basis expansion for all symmetric chromatic quasisymmetric functions of digraphs, extending work of Shareshian-Wachs and Athanasiadis. We show that the chromatic quasisymmetric functions of proper circular arc digraphs are symmetric functions, which generalizes a result of Shareshian and Wachs on natural unit interval graphs. The directed cycle on n vertices is contained in the class of proper circular arc digraphs, and we give a generating function for the e-basis expansion of the chromatic quasisymmetric function of the directed cycle, refining a result of Stanley for the undirected cycle. We present a generalization of the Shareshian-Wachs refinement of the Stanley-Stembridge e-positivity conjecture.
Generating series formulas for the structure constants of Solomon's descent algebra
Introduced by Solomon in his 1976 paper, the descent algebra of a finite Coxeter group received significant attention over the past decades. As proved by Gessel, in the case of the symmetric group its structure constants give the comultiplication table for the fundamental basis of quasisymmetric functions. We show that this property actually implies several well known relations linked to the Robinson-Schensted-Knuth correspondence and some of its generalisations. We further use the theory of type B quasisymmetric functions introduced by Chow to provide analogue results when the Coxeter group is the hyperoctahedral group.

The block number of a permutation is the maximal number of components in its expression as a direct sum. We show that, for $321$-avoiding permutations, the set of left-to-right maxima has the same distribution when the block number is assumed to be $k$ as when the last descent of the inverse is assumed to be at position $n - k$. This result is analogous to the Foata-Schützenberger equi-distribution theorem, and implies that the quasi-symmetric generating function of descent set over $321$-avoiding permutations with a prescribed number of blocks is Schur-positive.

We generalize the notion of a coloring complex of a graph to linearized combinatorial Hopf monoids. We determine when a linearized combinatorial Hopf monoid has such a construction, and discover some inequalities that are satisfied by the quasisymmetric function invariants associated to the combinatorial Hopf monoid. We show that the collection of all such coloring complexes forms a linearized combinatorial Hopf monoid, which is the terminal object in the category of combinatorial Hopf monoids with convex characters. We also study several examples of combinatorial Hopf monoids.

We investigate the longstanding problem of finding a combinatorial rule for the Schubert structure constants in the $K$-theory of flag varieties (in type $A$). The Grothendieck polynomials of A. Lascoux-M.-P. Schützenberger (1982) serve as polynomial representatives for $K$-theoretic Schubert classes; however no positive rule for their multiplication is known outside the Grassmannian case. We contribute a new basis for polynomials, give a positive combinatorial formula for the expansion of Grothendieck polynomials in these glide polynomials, and provide a positive combinatorial Littlewood-Richardson rule for expanding a product of Grothendieck polynomials in the glide basis. Our techniques easily extend to the $β$-Grothendieck polynomials of S. Fomin-A. Kirillov (1994), representing classes in connective $K$-theory, and we state our results in this more general context.
A specialization of the glide basis recovers the fundamental slide polynomials of S. Assaf-D. Searles (2016), which play an analogous role with respect to the Chow ring of flag varieties. Additionally, the stable limits of another specialization of glide polynomials are T. Lam-P. Pylyavskyy's (2007) basis of multi-fundamental quasisymmetric functions, $K$-theoretic analogues of I. Gessel's (1984) fundamental quasisymmetric functions. Those glide polynomials that are themselves quasisymmetric are truncations of multi-fundamental quasisymmetric functions and form a basis of quasisymmetric polynomials.

In 2004, J-C. Aval, F. Bergeron and N. Bergeron studied the algebra of diagonally quasi-symmetric functions $\operatorname{\mathsf{DQSym}}$ in the ring $\mathbb{Q}[\mathbf{x},\mathbf{y}]$ with two sets of variables. They made conjectures on the structure of the quotient $\mathbb{Q}[\mathbf{x},\mathbf{y}]/\langle\operatorname{\mathsf{DQSym}}^+\rangle$, which is a quasi-symmetric analogue of the diagonal harmonic polynomials. In this paper, we construct a Hilbert basis for this quotient when there are infinitely many variables i.e. $\mathbf{x}=x_1,x_2,\dots$ and $\mathbf{y}=y_1,y_2,\dots$. Then we apply this construction to the case where there are finitely many variables, and compute the second column of its Hilbert matrix.

Richard P. Stanley conjectured that finite trees can be distinguished by their chromatic symmetric functions. In this paper, we prove an analogous statement for posets: Finite rooted trees can be distinguished by their order quasisymmetric functions.
Enumerating quasi-Yamanouchi tableaux of Durfee size two
Quasi-Yamanouchi tableaux connect the two most studied types of tableaux. They are a subset of semistandard Young tableaux that are also a refinement on standard Young tableaux, and they can be used to improve the fundamental quasisymmetric expansion of Schur polynomials. We prove a product formula for enumerating certain quasi-Yamanouchi tableaux and provide strong evidence that no product formula exists in general for other shapes. Along the way, we also prove some nice properties of their distribution and symmetry.
Tutte Polynomials for Directed Graphs

The Tutte polynomial is a fundamental invariant of graphs. In this article, we define and study a generalization of the Tutte polynomial for directed graphs, that we name B-polynomial. The B-polynomial has three variables, but when specialized to the case of graphs (that is, digraphs where arcs come in pairs with opposite directions), one of the variables becomes redundant and the B-polynomial is equivalent to the Tutte polynomial. We explore various properties, expansions, specializations, and generalizations of the B-polynomial, and try to answer the following questions: 1. what properties of the digraph can be detected from its B-polynomial (acyclicity, length of paths, number of strongly connected components, etc.)? 2. which of the marvelous properties of the Tutte polynomial carry over to the directed graph setting? The B-polynomial generalizes the strict chromatic polynomial of mixed graphs introduced by Beck, Bogart and Pham. We also consider a quasisymmetric function version of the B-polynomial which simultaneously generalizes the Tutte symmetric function of Stanley and the quasisymmetric chromatic function of Shareshian and Wachs.

We introduce the quasi-key basis of the polynomial ring. We prove this basis contains the quasi-Schur polynomials of of Haglund, Luoto, Mason and van Willigenburg and that stable limits of quasi-key polynomials are quasi-Schur functions, thus giving a lifting of the quasi-Schur basis of quasisymmetric polynomials to the full polynomial ring. We introduce the combinatorial model of Kohnert tableaux, and use this model to prove that key polynomials expand positively in quasi-key polynomials which in turn expand positively in the fundamental slide polynomials introduced earlier by the authors. We give simple combinatorial formulas for these expansions in terms of Kohnert tableaux, lifting the parallel expansions of a Schur function into quasi-Schur functions into fundamental quasisymmetric functions. We further utilize Kohnert tableaux to find the precise point at which the fundamental slide expansion of a key polynomial stabilizes.
Poset structures on (m + 2)-angulations and polynomial bases of the quotient by G^m -quasisymmetric functions
For integers m, n $\ge$ 1, we describe a bijection sending dissections of the (mn + 2)-regular polygon into (m + 2)-sided polygons to a new basis of the quotient of the polynomial algebra in mn variables by an ideal generated by some kind of higher quasi-symmetric functions. We show that divisibility of the basis elements corresponds to a new partial order on dissections, which is studied in some detail.

We prove that a certain binary linear code associated with the incidence matrix of a quasi-symmetric 2-(37,9,8) design with intersection numbers 1 and 3 must be contained in an extremal doubly even self-dual code of length 40. Using the classification of extremal doubly even self-dual codes of length 40, we show that a quasi-symmetric 2-(37,9,8) design with intersection numbers 1 and 3 does not exist.

We introduce a quasisymmetric generalization of Berele and Regev's hook Schur functions and prove that these new quasisymmetric hook Schur functions decompose the hook Schur functions in a natural way. We examine the combinatorics of the quasisymmetric hook Schur functions, providing a relationship to Gessel's fundamental quasisymmetric functions and an analogue of the Robinson-Schensted-Knuth algorithm. We also prove that the multiplication of quasisymmetric hook Schur functions with hook Schur functions behaves the same as the multiplication of quasisymmetric Schur functions with Schur functions.

We describe a combinatorial formula for the coefficients when the dual immaculate quasisymmetric functions are decomposed into Young quasisymmetric Schur functions. We prove this using an analogue of Schensted insertion. Using this result, we give necessary and sufficient conditions for a dual immaculate quasisymmetric function to be symmetric. Moreover, we show that the product of a Schur function and a dual immaculate quasisymmetric function expands positively in the Young quasisymmetric Schur basis. We also discuss the decomposition of the Young noncommutative Schur functions into the immaculate functions. Finally, we provide a Remmel-Whitney-style rule to generate the coefficients of the decomposition of the dual immaculates into the Young quasisymmetric Schurs algorithmically and an analogous rule for the decomposition of the dual bases.

Hazewinkel proved the Ditters conjecture that the algebra of quasisymmetric functions over the integers is free commutative by constructing a nice polynomial basis. In this paper we prove a structure theorem for the algebra of peak quasisymmetric functions (PQSym) over the integers. It provides a polynomial basis of PQSym over the rational field, different from Hsiao's basis, and implies the freeness of PQSym over its subring of symmetric functions spanned by Schur's Q-functions.
Multivariate P-Eulerian polynomials
arXiv only
The P-Eulerian polynomial counts the linear extensions of a labeled partially ordered set, P, by their number of descents. It is known that the P-Eulerian polynomials are real-rooted for various classes of posets P. The purpose of this paper is to extend these results to polynomials in several variables. To this end we study multivariate extensions of P-Eulerian polynomials and prove that for certain posets these polynomials are stable, i.e., non-vanishing whenever all variables are in the upper half-plane of the complex plane. A natural setting for our proofs is the Malvenuto-Reutenauer algebra of permutations (or the algebra of free quasi-symmetric functions). In the process we identify an algebra on Dyck paths, which to our knowledge has not been studied before.
