Combinatorial flats and Schubert varieties of subspace arrangements
Published • View Publication • BIB
The lattice of flats $\mathcal L_M$ of a matroid $M$ is combinatorially well-behaved and, when $M$ is realizable, admits a geometric model in the form of a "Schubert variety of hyperplane arrangement". In contrast, the lattice of flats of a polymatroid exhibits many combinatorial pathologies and admits no similar geometric model. We address this situation by defining the lattice $\mathcal L_P$ of "combinatorial flats" of a polymatroid $P$. Combinatorially, $\mathcal L_P$ exhibits good behavior analogous to that of $\mathcal L_M$: it is graded, determines $P$ when $P$ is simple, and is top-heavy. When $P$ is realizable over a field of characteristic 0, we show that $\mathcal L_P$ is modeled by "the Schubert variety of a subspace arrangement". Our work generalizes a number of results of Ardila-Boocher and Huh-Wang on Schubert varieties of hyperplane arrangements; however, the geometry of Schubert varieties of subspace arrangements is noticeably more complicated than that of Schubert varieties of hyperplane arrangements. Many natural questions remain open.

Betti Numbers of Odd Biisotropic Symplectic Grassmannians
We compute the singular cohomology groups of odd biisotropic symplectic Grassmannians $\operatorname{S_2Gr}(k, 2n+1)$ by presenting an explicit dimension-preserving combinatorial bijection between the Bialynicki-Birula cells in $\operatorname{S_2Gr}(k, 2n+1)$ and the Schubert cells in $\operatorname{Gr}(k, 2n+2-k)$.

Euclidean Distance Optimization Within the Grassmannian
Given a subvariety of the Grassmannian and a data point, we seek to find a point on the subvariety minimizing the Euclidean distance to the data point. The number of complex critical points of this optimization problem is the Euclidean distance (ED) degree. We show that the ED discriminant of the whole Grassmannian, that is, the set of data points with a number of critical points different than the ED degree, is the discriminant of the characteristic polynomial of the data as a projection matrix. Another closely connected algebraic complexity measure for a subvariety in the Grassmannian is the Grassmann distance (GD) degree, which is the number of complex critical points of the distance optimization problem when the data point itself is in the Grassmannian. We give formulae for ED and GD degrees of geometrically meaningful subvarieties of the Grassmannian, namely, products of smaller Grassmannians, matroid realization varieties, and Schubert varieties.

$K$-$k$-Schur functions are $k$-Schur positive
The $k$-Schur functions (resp., $K$-$k$-Schur functions) are the symmetric function representatives of Schubert classes in the homology (resp., $K$-homology) of the affine Grassmannian of type $A$. We prove that every $K$-$k$-Schur function is a nonnegative integer linear combination in the basis of $k$-Schur functions. This settles a conjecture by Lam, Schilling and Shimozono. The proof relies on realizations of $k$-Schur and $K$-$k$-Schur functions as Catalan and Katalan functions, respectively.

A Proof of Rubey's Lattice Conjecture
In 2011, Rubey generalized chute and ladder moves on the set of reduced pipe dreams for a permutation $w$ and conjectured that the induced poset on reduced pipe dreams is a lattice. In this paper, we prove this conjecture. Our key tool is a new type of move operation $\mathcal{M}_{ij}$, defined as a composite of certain generalized ladder moves and then simplified in terms of swaps on a partition shape. We show that joins and meets exist in Rubey's poset by proving simple recursive formulas in terms of $\mathcal{M}_{ij}$ operations, so we refer to the poset as the Rubey lattice henceforth. In addition, we give an explicit criterion to determine if two elements of the Rubey lattice are comparable using an injective map from reduced pipe dreams to tableaux on the diagram of a permutation. The pipe dream tableaux construction also gives an exact formula for the maximum length of any chain in the Rubey lattice and bounds on the number of reduced pipe dreams for $w$, or equivalently the sum of the coefficients in the corresponding Schubert polynomial. Several open problems for further development of the Rubey lattice related to Markov processes, Schubert polynomials, and Grothendieck polynomials are given.

Nonnegativity of the $g$-polynomial of split matroids
We prove that the $g$-polynomial of every split matroid has nonnegative coefficients, establishing Speyer's conjecture for a class closed under taking minors and containing all paving and copaving matroids. Our proof uses a deletion--contraction identity obtained by constructing an auxiliary split matroid. We first show that every simple, cosimple, connected split matroid $M$ has an element $e$ for which both the deletion $M\setminus e$ and the contraction $M/e$ are connected. More generally, let $M$ be any connected split matroid of rank $k$ on a ground set $E$ with $|E|\ge4$. Suppose that $e\in E$ is such that both $M\setminus e$ and $M/e$ are connected. For every $v\in E\setminus\{e\}$, we construct a connected elementary split matroid $N_{e,v}$ of rank $k-1$ on $E\setminus\{e,v\}$ satisfying \[ g_M(t)=g_{M\setminus e}(t)+g_{M/e}(t)+t\,g_{N_{e,v}}(t). \] Using a fixed total order on $E$, we prescribe the proper cyclic flats of $N_{e,v}$ and their ranks. The identity follows from the covaluative formula of Ferroni and Schröter together with recurrences for its correction polynomials, derived from Ferroni's enumeration of admissible Delannoy paths for Schubert matroids. Since all three matroids on the right have fewer elements, the identity supplies the induction step in the proof of nonnegativity.

Staircase diagrams, pattern avoidance, and smooth permutations
A well known result due to Lakshmibai and Sandhya states that smooth Schubert varieties of type A correspond to permutations that avoid the patterns 3412 and 4231. It was later shown by the second author and Slofstra that staircase diagrams over a simply-laced Dynkin diagram are in bijection with smooth Schubert varieties of the corresponding type. We explore how the poset structure of staircase diagrams is connected with pattern avoidance on smooth permutations. As an application, we enumerate several subclasses of smooth permutations which are characterized by pattern avoidance. These subclasses include the class of polished permutations which were studied by Gaetz and Gao.

Counterexamples to the Reiner-Shimozono conjecture and the failure of Schubert filtrations
We disprove the Reiner--Shimozono conjecture that products of key polynomials have nonnegative expansions in Demazure atoms. By relaxing the defining relations of Demazure modules, we obtain an exact coefficient-extraction formula that yields an explicit infinite family of counterexamples, including negative coefficients in twenty-eight variables. These examples answer van der Kallen's long-standing open question on relative Schubert filtrations negatively, already for tensor products of two dual Joseph modules. For individual atom coefficients, we give a sufficient criterion for positivity that is checkable in polynomial time in the binary input length, uniformly in rank. For each fixed rank $n\ge4$, this criterion recognizes a nonvanishing proportion of the positive atom coefficients as the bound on the composition entries tends to infinity.

The Lehmer complex of a Bruhat interval
We introduce Lehmer codes for several finite Coxeter groups, including all classical Weyl groups. These codes correspond to embed products of chains in the Bruhat order, which allow us to associate to each lower Bruhat interval of these groups a multicomplex whose $f$-polynomial is the Poincaré polynomial of the interval. Via a general construction, we prove that these polynomials are $h$-polynomials of vertex-decomposable simplicial complexes, which we call Lehmer complexes. Moreover we provide a classification, in terms of unimodal permutations, of Poincaré polynomials of smooth Schubert varieties in flag manifolds.

Torsion proliferation
This paper considers the generic behaviour of sheaves supported on Schubert varieties in finite flag varieties. Our main results are that, for any fixed prime $p$, as the rank of the associated algebraic group grows, almost every intersection cohomology sheaf admits $p$-torsion in its stalks or costalks, and almost every indecomposable parity sheaf is not perverse. For certain families of partial flag varieties we also determine explicit asymptotics for this growth.

A quasisymmetric analog of Grassmannian Schubert varieties
We show that the cohomology rings of toric Richardson varieties in the Grassmannian are finite truncations of the ring of quasisymmetric functions. We exhibit an affine paving of each such variety whose cell closures give rise to the basis of fundamental quasisymmetric functions. We similarly interpret the homology of these varieties in terms of the ring of noncommutative symmetric functions and show that the expansion of the homological class of any torus-invariant subvariety into the affine paving basis agrees with the expansion of a corresponding generalized noncommutative ribbon function into the ribbon basis. By taking the direct limit of all toric Richardson varieties, we obtain an ind-variety equipped with a weak $H$-group structure whose cohomology is the Hopf algebra of quasisymmetric functions. We conjecture that it is isomorphic to a similar $H$-group constructed by Baker--Richter. As a byproduct, we deduce that the $f$-vectors of shard polytopes are log-concave, making the first progress on a question of Ferroni--Schröter for matroid base polytopes.

Chromatic word-quasisymmetric functions of matroids
Billera, Jia, and Reiner (2009) introduced the quasisymmetric functions of matroids and showed that this defines a Hopf algebra homomorphism which is a valuative invariant, i.e., isomorphic matroids have the same quasisymmetric function and polytopal subdivisions of matroid base polytopes define relations among the corresponding quasisymmetric functions. In this project we study an analogue in non-commuting variables, the word-quasisymmetric functions. To every matroid $M$ we associate a word-quasisymmetric function $ψ(M)$ and call this the chromatic word-quasisymmetric functions of a matroid. Matroids and word-quasisymmetric functions form Hopf algebras, and our map $ψ$ between them is a homomorphism. We want to study the kernel, equivalently the image, of the map $ψ$ from matroids to word-quasisymmetric functions, that is, we would like to understand which matroids are indistinguishable by the chromatic word-quasisymmetric functions. The map $ψ$ is not an invariant, but we can show that it is valuative. Using Schubert matroids and nested matroids, special classes of matroids, we prove a lower bound of $2^d-d$ for the rank of the map $ψ$ from matroids to the chromatic word-quasisymmetric functions in degree $d$ and conjecture the upper bound of $d!$ is tight.

Symmetric group actions on the coordinate ring of the lower unipotent group and the polynomial ring with quantum parameters
Givental-Kim and Ciocan-Fontanine gave an explicit presentation of the quantum cohomology ring of the flag variety. The author and Shirato introduced an algebraic generalization of their presentation in the context of the coordinate rings of regular nilpotent Hessenberg varieties. In particular, they connect the coordinate ring of the lower unipotent group in a general linear group and the polynomial ring with quantum parameters. In this paper we consider the dual of the connection and we see that the Plücker coordinates correspond to the quantizations of Schur polynomials. As an application of the connection, we construct an action of the symmetric group on the polynomial ring with quantum parameters. Using the symmetric group action, one can define the divided difference operators on the polynomial ring with quantum parameters. We study the quantizations of Schubert polynomials in relation to the divided difference operators.

Back Stable Standard Elementary Monomials
We introduce back stable standard elementary monomials and their complete homogeneous analogues. These families form bases of the back stable Schubert ring and record the eventual standard elementary monomial expansions of left-stabilized Schubert polynomials. Dynkin reversal exchanges the two bases while preserving their coefficients. We also show that orbit sums of the back stable coefficients recover the elementary and complete homogeneous coefficients of Stanley symmetric functions. Finally, we study the shifted specialization polynomial $\mathcal{T}_w(t)=\mathfrak{S}_{1^t\times w}(1)$, considered by Fomin and Kirillov, which counts reduced pipe dreams of $1^t\times w$. We express this polynomial in terms of back stable standard elementary monomial coefficients.

Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of skew-symmetric matrix Schubert varieties
Skew-symmetric matrix Schubert varieties are determinantal varieties obtained by intersecting matrix Schubert varieties with the space of skew-symmetric matrices. They are closely related to the orbit closures of the symplectic group action on the flag variety, and their torus-equivariant K-classes are the symplectic Grothendieck polynomials. We compute the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of skew-symmetric matrix Schubert varieties by giving a combinatorial formula for the degree of symplectic Grothendieck polynomials. In addition, we characterize the highest-degree homogeneous component of a symplectic Grothendieck polynomial and compute the maximal Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of skew-symmetric matrix Schubert varieties.

Condensed configurations and valuative matroid invariants
Condensed configurations are compact incidence data obtained by grouping the cyclic flats of a matroid. We show that their inverse incidence matrices give explicit Schubert expansions and hence determine every valuative or covaluative matroid invariant. For the extended binary Golay matroid, this unexpectedly produces non-real-rooted Kazhdan-Lusztig and Z-polynomials. To our knowledge, the latter is the first counterexample in the literature.

Newton polytopes of fireworks Grothendieck polynomials
We show that the support of the Grothendieck polynomial $\mathfrak G_w$ of any fireworks permutation is as large as possible: a monomial appears in $\mathfrak G_w$ if and only if it divides $\mathbf x^{\mathrm{wt}(\overline{D(w)})}$ and is divisible by some monomial appearing in the Schubert polynomial $\mathfrak S_w$. Our formula implies that the homogenization of $\mathfrak G_w$ has M-convex support. We also show that for any fireworks permutation $w\in S_n$, there exists a layered permutation $π(w)\in S_n$ so that $\mathrm{supp}(\mathfrak G_{π(w)})\supseteq \mathrm{supp}(\mathfrak G_w)$.

Chern flow and Chern moment algebras
We construct realizable-volume models over every field for the factorial normalizations of homogeneous Lascoux, Lascoux-atom, and positive Grothendieck packets, including their minimal homogenizations and layers. In particular, the construction realizes the factorial normalizations of all Schubert and key polynomials and of the minimal sign-corrected homogeneous Grothendieck polynomials. The normalized polynomials are Lorentzian, and the ordinary supports are the lattice points of integral generalized polymatroids. On a Bott--Samelson tower, row and co-row filtrations assemble the local factors into globally generated bundles; a creation-state graph absorbs the remaining kernel factors by Chern flow. We also construct intrinsic algebras of joint Chern moments. Positive inverse-Chern presentations give these algebras Hard Lefschetz and Hodge--Riemann relations, and supply source-level Hodge completions of the packets. For globally generated tropical toric bundles in the sense of Kaveh--Manon, finite generating witnesses and matroid duality provide the presentations required by Larson--Partida's theorem, without representability. These constructions yield joint Chern-number inequalities, nonvanishing polymatroids, and equality criteria.

Contact Rigidity and Comparison Kernels for Type A lci Schubert Varieties
Let $X_w$ be a Type A local complete intersection Schubert variety. We prove Contact Rigidity: the existence of two smooth singular components forces some pair of singular components to contain a common Schubert subvariety of codimension one in each. If the singular locus is a single smooth component $X_z$, the rational comparison kernel is $IC_z$, and $P_{u,w}(q)=1+q^{(\ell(w)-\ell(z)-1)/2}$ for every $u\leq z$. The first proof combines pattern avoidance with a computer-assisted finite overlap classification, rectangle inheritance, and extremal repairs. The second establishes the hypotheses of Woo's theorem and uses Euler characteristics and Bruhat triangularity to identify the entire perverse kernel.

Parametrization of positroid cells by Dubrovin-Natanzon Cartier divisors on maximal Mumford curves
We prove that each totally positive Schubert cell is a real component of Jacobian of the maximal Mumford ($\mathtt{MM}$) curve corresponding to the Le-graph of such cell. At this aim we construct a bijection between the points of this positroid cell and Dubrovin-Natanzon Cartier divisors on the $\mathtt{MM}$-curve.
