Schur positivity of three-legged spiders
We give a complete classification of Schur positivity for three-legged spiders. Every spider with at least two even legs is Schur positive, whereas every spider with three odd legs has a negative Schur coefficient. If $a$ is even and $b,c$ are odd, then the spider $S(a,b,c)$ is Schur positive if and only if $a\le 5b+5c+2$. Whenever Schur positivity fails, there is exactly one negative Schur coefficient, whose value we determine explicitly. These results extend those of Thibon and Wang for the families $S(a,2,1)$ and $S(a,4,1)$, and those of Wang and Wang for $S(a,b,2)$. The proof combines known Schur-positivity results for clique-spiders with Pieri's rule and simultaneous induction.
Crystal skeletons: Combinatorics and axioms
Crystal skeletons were introduced by Maas-Gariépy in 2023 by contracting quasi-crystal components in a crystal graph. On the representation theoretic level, crystal skeletons model the expansion of Schur functions into Gessel's quasisymmetric functions. Motivated by questions of Schur positivity, we provide a combinatorial description of crystal skeletons, and prove many new properties, including a conjecture by Maas-Gariépy that crystal skeletons generalize dual equivalence graphs. We then present a new axiomatic approach to crystal skeletons. We give three versions of the axioms based on $GL_n$-branching, $S_n$-branching, and local axioms in analogy to the local Stembridge axioms for crystals based on novel commutation relations.

Categorification of $k$-Schur functions and refined Macdonald positivity
We establish a substantial part of the categorification framework for $k$-Schur functions proposed in Chen's Ph.D.\ thesis, written under the supervision of Mark Haiman. More precisely, we realize $k$-Schur functions as the graded characters of a distinguished family of objects in a certain module category and establish module-theoretic analogues of several foundational properties of $k$-Schur functions. A final part of Chen's framework predicts a homological characterization of modules admitting filtrations by these distinguished objects; we establish this characterization under an additional combinatorial hypothesis. In addition, we unconditionally prove that modules arising in this framework admit filtrations whose subquotients are affine Demazure modules of level $k$. As a consequence, modified Macdonald polynomials expand positively in the characters of affine Demazure modules. This may be viewed as a homological refinement of Macdonald positivity, arising from an intrinsic $\mathrm{ext}$-orthogonality condition on the corresponding Garsia--Haiman modules. We also prove the combinatorial hypothesis for $m \le 2k$ in the appendix and verify it computationally for $m\leq 19$, yielding $k$-Schur positivity of modified Macdonald polynomials in these cases. Our approach builds on our previous work on the algebraic and geometric realization of Catalan symmetric functions, a class encompassing both $k$-Schur and Hall--Littlewood functions.

Schur positivity of the spiders $S(a,2,1)$ and $S(a,4,1)$ via noncommutative symmetric functions
We prove that the spider graphs $S(a,2,1)$ and $S(a,4,1)$ are Schur positive for all integers $a\ge1$. Together with the known $e$-positivity results, this completes the $e$- and Schur-positivity classification of both families. Our approach uses noncommutative symmetric functions, including a particularly simple ribbon expansion for the path lift with coefficients given by powers of two. We give a new proof of the Shareshian--Wachs path formula at $t=1$ and construct corresponding lifts for spiders. The Littlewood--Richardson rule converts their ribbon expansions into a general Schur-coefficient formula in terms of weighted Yamanouchi words. Mass-preserving multi-injections and a reduction to finitely many inequalities in degree $10$ then prove the required positivity; exact computer verification of these inequalities completes the proof in full generality.

The cyclic-induction Schur cone: Boolean sums, Ramanujan-square positivity, and integral structure
We study the Schur-positive cone in $\Rspace_{n,\mathbb R}\coloneqq \operatorname{span}_{\mathbb R}\{p_d^{n/d}:d\mid n\}$ through its basis $Q_{n,d}\coloneqq\ell_{n/d}^{(1)}[p_d]$, where $\ell_m^{(1)}$ is the Frobenius characteristic of the representation induced to $S_m$ from a faithful linear character of the subgroup generated by an $m$-cycle; brackets denote plethysm. A Boolean $Q$-sum is a sum of distinct elements of this basis. We give a unified proof of four conjectures of Sundaram on Schur positivity by classifying all Schur-positive Boolean $Q$-sums; the case of sums over divisors up to a prescribed bound recovers Hou's theorem. Specifically, for a nonempty set $J$ of divisors of $n$, the sum $\sum_{d\in J}Q_{n,d}$ is Schur-positive exactly when $1\in J$ and, for even $n$, $n\in J$ implies $n/2\in J$. The same character estimates prove the Ramanujan-square conjecture of Shareshian and Sundaram: the function $\sum_{d\mid n}c_d(n/d)^2p_d^{n/d}$, where $c_d(r)$ is the Ramanujan sum, has a positive coefficient of $s_λ$ for every $n\ge1$ and $λ\vdash n$, except when $n\equiv2\pmod4$ and $λ=(1^n)$, in which case the coefficient is zero. We prove that an element of this space has integral Schur coefficients if and only if its $Q$-coordinates are integral. The Boolean classification also determines the convex hull of the Schur-positive Boolean points with $Q_{n,1}$-coordinate $1$. We compute its Ehrhart polynomial and volume, prove its integer decomposition property, and determine the Hilbert basis of its cone. For $n\ge18$, we prove that setting the coefficient of $s_{(n)}$ or $s_{(1^n)}$ equal to $0$ or $1$ defines a facet of the section of the Schur-positive cone with $Q_{n,1}$-coordinate $1$. The positivity results and coordinate formulas also yield inequalities for major-index residue multiplicities.

Schur positivity from signed elementary expansions: clique-spiders and spiders $S(a,b,2)$
We prove a Schur alpha-omega lemma for chromatic symmetric functions. It bounds the partitions indexing nonzero Schur coefficients in terms of higher independence numbers, higher clique numbers, and the chromatic number. We then establish three equivalent dominance-matching criteria: matrix, Hall, and order-ideal, that certify Schur positivity from a fixed signed $e_I$-expansion. As applications, we obtain complete classifications of $e$-positivity and Schur positivity for four basic families of $3$-clique-spiders. Here $S^{ghk}_{rst}$ is formed by joining a common center to one vertex of each of $K_r$, $K_s$, and $K_t$ by internally disjoint paths of lengths $g$, $h$, and $k$, respectively. As a result, $S^{000}_{rst}$ is Schur positive exactly when $r\ge st-1$, and every graph $S^{100}_{rst}$ and $S^{010}_{rst}$ is Schur positive. When $s=t$, the graph $S^{001}_{rst}$ is Schur positive; when $s>t$, its Schur-positive members fall into four explicit parameter regimes. We also introduce a path-clique bootstrap and use it to prove that every spider $S(a,b,2)$ is Schur positive. Finally, we prove that the spider $S(a,b,2)$ for $a\ge b\ge2$ with $3\nmid b$ is $e$-positive if and only if $(a,b)\in\{(6,4),(12,4),(9,7)\}$, which advances the study of Tom's conjecture concerning the $e$-positivity of spiders $S(a,b,2)$.

Pfaffian--Toeplitz identities, Schur positivity, and the $q$-log-convexity of Baxter polynomials
We use the Pfaffian minor summation formula together with Jacobi--Trudi Toeplitz matrices to derive Pfaffian expansions in skew Schur functions. This yields explicit Schur expansions for several generating functions involving products of skew Schur functions. In particular, using sparse skew-symmetric matrices, we provide a Pfaffian proof of a Schur-positive identity arising in the study of the $q$-log-convexity of the Narayana polynomials. As the main application, we prove that the Baxter polynomials form a $q$-log-convex sequence. We further show that the Baxter transformation defined by the refined Baxter numbers preserves log-convexity. Finally, by realizing the $q$-refined Baxter numbers as principal specializations of rectangular Schur functions, we prove that the array of $q$-refined Baxter numbers is $q$-log-concave both along each row and along each column. Both $q$-log-concavity results extend naturally to the $q$-analogues of the $d$-Hoggatt numbers.

Three Infinite Families Separating Schur Positivity, the Strongly Nice Property, and the Nice Property
For a graph $G$, Schur positivity of $X_G$ implies that $G$ is strongly nice, and every strongly nice graph is nice. We construct three infinite families separating these properties. We first give a connected family $F_t$, $t\ge6$, that is strongly nice but not Schur positive. We then prove that homogeneous strongly nice symmetric functions with nonnegative monomial coefficients are closed under multiplication, and hence that strongly nice graphs are closed under disjoint union. As an application, for $H=K_{3,3}-e$, the graphs \[ M_t=H\sqcup K_t,\qquad t\ge3, \] form a disconnected family that is strongly nice but not Schur positive. Finally, we define \[ N_r=K_r\vee(K_2\sqcup2K_1),\qquad r\ge2, \] and prove that every $N_r$ is connected and nice but not strongly nice. We also introduce the level-$k$ nice property and show that the level depth of $N_r$ is $4r!$.
Kostant--Kumar modules: presentation and multiplicities
Kostant--Kumar modules $K(λ,w,μ)$ are submodules of a tensor product $V(λ)\otimes V(μ)$ of irreducible highest weight modules over a symmetrizable Kac--Moody algebra, indexed by Weyl group elements $w$; their decomposition numbers $c^ν_{λμ}(w)$ refine ordinary tensor product multiplicities. We study them module-theoretically. We show that $c^ν_{λμ}(w)$ is computed by a natural quotient of the Kostant--Parthasarathy--Ranga Rao--Varadarajan multiplicity space, via orthogonal projection onto a Demazure module. For $\mathfrak{g}$ finite-dimensional semisimple or symmetric Kac--Moody, we present $K(λ,w,μ)$ by generators and relations, extending the presentation of Demazure modules due to Joseph, Polo and Mathieu. We apply the presentation to obtain upper bounds on $c^ν_{λμ}(w)$ and to study Schur positivity.

Equality conditions for correlation inequalities
We prove equality conditions for the Ahlswede--Daykin (AD) inequality and the Fortuin--Kasteleyn--Ginibre (FKG) inequality. We then present a number of applications and special cases of these equality conditions. These include Björner's and Fishburn's inequalities for linear extensions of finite posets, the Lam--Postnikov--Pylyavskyy (LPP) and the Okounkov inequalities for Schur positivity of products of Schur functions. We conclude with equality conditions for the Ahlswede--Daykin--Schur (ADS) inequality recently introduced in Chan--Chen--Pak--Soskin (2026), which is an AD type extension of the LPP inequality.

Schur positivity of nabla on Petrie symmetric functions
The Petrie symmetric function $G(k,n)$, introduced by Grinberg, is defined as the sum of monomial symmetric functions $m_λ$ indexed by partitions $λ\vdash n$ satisfying $λ_1<k$. This article demonstrates that the Schur positivity pattern of $\nabla^r G(k,n)$ for all $r\geq 1$ depends exclusively on whether $k$ divides $n$, thus answering an open problem of Bergeron noted in Grinberg's work.

The Schur positivity of $\nabla m_μ$
Bergeron, Garsia, Haiman and Tesler conjectured in 1999 that, for all partitions $μ,λ\vdash n$, the polynomial $(-1)^{|μ|-\ell(μ)}\langle \nabla m_μ, s_λ\rangle$ has nonnegative integer coefficients, where $\nabla$ is the Bergeron--Garsia nabla operator, which acts diagonally on the modified Macdonald basis, and $m_μ$ is the monomial symmetric function. In this article, we prove this conjecture, and more generally that $(-1)^{|μ|-\ell(μ)}\langle\nabla^r m_μ,s_λ\rangle\in\mathbb{N}[q,t]$ for all $r\geq 1$. We establish a recursion showing that $(-1)^{|μ|-\ell(μ)}m_μ$ has an expansion with coefficients in $\mathbb{Q}_{\geq 0}[q]$ in the symmetric functions $C_α(1)$, where $C_a$ denotes the operator introduced by Haglund, Morse and Zabrocki. Combining this expansion with the compositional shuffle theorems of Carlsson--Mellit and Mellit, and with the Schur positivity of LLT polynomials, completes the proof. The same method, using the $e$-positivity of column LLT polynomials after the substitution $q\mapsto q+1$, also gives an $e$-positive analogue.

Transition Matrices between Shifted $t$-Schur Bases and Cyclotomic Schur $Q$-Positivity
For a strict partition $λ$, let $\mathcal Q_λ(X;t)=Q_λ[X-tX]$ be the shifted $t$-Schur function arising from the modified Greaves--Jing--Zhu operator on the odd power-sum ring. We study transition matrices between the shifted bases with parameters $t$ and $s$. The relative scaling operator is diagonal in the odd power-sum basis, leading to explicit spectral data, determinant and trace formulas, weighted symmetry, a spin-character formula, and a transition Cauchy identity. For the cyclotomic specialization $C_{λμ}^{[M]}(t)=C_{λμ}(t^M,t)$, the relative operator becomes plethystic substitution by $1+t+\cdots+t^{M-1}$. We prove Schur $Q$-positivity and reciprocity, derive factorization and root-of-unity rank formulas, and give an exact computation method. For $M=2$, all one-row transitions are computed explicitly, and the nonzero coefficients are unimodal.

On the Schur-positivity of various sets of set partitions
A symmetric function is called Schur-positive if it admits an expansion in the Schur basis with nonnegative coefficients. In this paper, we study the Schur positivity of symmetric functions naturally associated with set partitions, with respect to two different notions of descent. In the first case, the Schur expansion involves hook-shaped Young diagrams, and the corresponding coefficients are given by Touchard-Riordan polynomials, which enumerate matchings by their number of crossings. In the second case, the Schur functions correspond to two-rows Young diagrams, and the coefficients are partial sums of associated Bell numbers. A key ingredient of our approach in the second case is the notion of a removable singleton, defined algebraically and shown to admit an equivalent combinatorial interpretation via jeu-de-taquin rectification of skew tableaux. As an application, we establish Schur positivity for various classes of symmetric functions indexed by non-crossing partitions and partitions with a given number of parts. We provide an explicit combinatorial description of the tableaux that contribute to the Schur expansion, and we connects the obtained coefficients to some known integer sequences.

Uncrowding the 5-Vertex Model: RSK and Crystal Structures
While the uncrowding algorithm on set-valued tableaux has long been instrumental in proving the Schur positivity of stable symmetric Grothendieck polynomials, lattice models have emerged as a modern framework for investigating symmetric functions, in particular symmetric Grothendieck polynomials. In this work, we synthesize these combinatorial and lattice-theoretic approaches by defining both the Robinson--Schensted--Knuth (RSK) correspondence and the uncrowding operation directly on a 5-vertex model of Motegi and Sakai and its subsequent reinterpretation by Buciumas, Scrimshaw, and Weber. Our lattice-based RSK formulation yields a powerful new result: the direct construction of the associated crystal structure on the states of the 5-vertex model.
Sprout Symmetric Functions: Part 1
A \emph{sprout sequence} is a sequence $\frakr=(R_0=1,R_1,R_2,\dots)$ of symmetric functions in the variables $\bmx=(x_1,x_2,\dots)$ over a field $K$ generated from a power series $F(t)=1+a_1t+a_2t^2+\cdots$ by the rule $\sum_{n\geq 0}R_nt^n = \prod_{i\geq 1} F(x_it)$. The power series $F(t)$ is called the \emph{seed} of $\frakr$. This concept originated in the work of Littlewood and Richardson (though not with the name ``sprout sequence''), and numerous examples of sprout sequences have appeared in the literature. They are related to chromatic Tutte polynomials of complete graphs and complete hypergraphs, binomial posets, upper homogeneous (upho) posets, topological genera, etc. We first develop the basic theory of sprout sequences and then look at the special case $F(t)=\sec(\sqrt{t})$. We give five characterizations of sprout sequences and consider the expansion of sprout symmetric functions in terms of well-known symmetric function bases. The Schur positivity, elementary symmetric function positivity, and complete homogeneous symmetric function positivity of $R_n$ for all $n$ are completely characterized using the Edrei-Thoma theorem from the theory of total positivity. The seed $F(t)=\sec(\sqrt{t})$ is especially interesting. The expansion of $R_n$ in the power sum or monomial basis is related to alternating permutations. The Schur function expansion is related to standard Young skew tableaux. The expansion in terms of the complete symmetric functions has nonnegative integer coefficients, but we don't know a combinatorial interpretation. Finally we give a formula for $R_n$ as a sum of chromatic symmetric functions of interval orders.

Schur positivity of the nabla operator on two-column modified Hall--Littlewood polynomials
In this paper, we investigate the Schur positivity of modified Hall--Littlewood polynomials indexed by two-column partitions under the action of the $\nabla$ operator. Specifically, we resolve two conjectures posed by Bergeron, Garsia, Haiman, and Tesler in the two-column case. Furthermore, our approach demonstrates that these results can be extended to arbitrary powers $\nabla^k$ for all integers $k\geq 1$.

A concise proof of cylindric Schur positivity
Cylindric Schur functions are a family of symmetric functions that generalize skew Schur functions. We give a short proof that skew cylindric Schur functions expand positively in terms of non-skew cylindric Schur functions. In particular, we show that the expansion coefficients are fusion coefficients.

Newton polytopes of immanants of some combinatorial matrices
Published • View Publication • BIB
The immanants of combinatorial matrices have many significant properties, including m-positivity and Schur positivity. While the immanants of Jacobi-Trudi matrices are known to be both m-positive and Schur positive, those of Giambelli matrices have only been proven to be m-positive, with Schur positivity remaining a conjecture. These positivity properties rely heavily on lattice path interpretations. In this paper, we study the Newton polytopes of immanants for these two classes of matrices. Using the lattice path method, we verify the saturation property for the Newton polytopes of Jacobi-Trudi matrices in special cases. For Giambelli matrices, we prove that this property holds for all immanants. To achieve this, we obtain the explicit coefficients of the largest monomial (in the dominance order) in the monomial expansion of the immanants of Giambelli matrices.

Temperley-Lieb Immanants, Key Positivity, and Demazure Crystals
The main goal of this paper is to extend three important Schur positivity results to key positivity, replacing all Schur polynomials in relevant expressions with flagged Schur polynomials. Namely, we first show that the Temperley-Lieb immanants of (many) flagged Jacobi-Trudi matrices are key positive. Using this result, we give a combinatorial rule for the key expansion of (most) products of flagged skew Schur polynomials, and also give a log concavity result inspired by that of Lam-Postnikov-Pylyavskyy. The main tools in our proofs are Demazure crystals, and the recently defined shuffle tableaux of Nguyen and Pylyavskyy. In order to prove our main results, we must develop a new characterization of Demazure crystals, which builds off of prior work of Assaf and Gonzalez. This characterization may be useful in other contexts.
