Recent Trends in Quasisymmetric Functions
Published • View Publication • BIB
This article serves as an introduction to several recent developments in the study of quasisymmetric functions. The focus of this survey is on connections between quasisymmetric functions and the combinatorial Hopf algebra of noncommutative symmetric functions, appearances of quasisymmetric functions within the theory of Macdonald polynomials, and analogues of symmetric functions. Topics include the significance of quasisymmetric functions in representation theory (such as representations of the 0-Hecke algebra), recently discovered bases (including analogues of well-studied symmetric function bases), and applications to open problems in symmetric function theory.

The genomic Schur function is fundamental-positive
Published in Annals of Combinatorics 24, no. 1, 2020, 95-108 • View Publication • BIB
In work with A. Yong, the author introduced genomic tableaux to prove the first positive combinatorial rule for the Littlewood-Richardson coefficients in torus-equivariant $K$-theory of Grassmannians. We then studied the genomic Schur function $U_λ$, a generating function for such tableaux, showing that it is non-trivially a symmetric function, although generally not Schur-positive. Here we show that $U_λ$ is, however, positive in the basis of fundamental quasisymmetric functions. We give a positive combinatorial formula for this expansion in terms of gapless increasing tableaux; this is, moreover, the first finite expression for $U_λ$. Combined with work of A. Garsia and J. Remmel, this yields a compact combinatorial (but necessarily non-positive) formula for the Schur expansion of $U_λ$.

Linear compactness and combinatorial bialgebras
Published in Electron. J. Combin. 28 (2021), no. 3, Research Paper 9 • View Publication • BIB
We present an expository overview of the monoidal structures in the category of linearly compact vector spaces. Bimonoids in this category are the natural duals of infinite-dimensional bialgebras. We classify the relations on words whose equivalence classes generate linearly compact bialgebras under shifted shuffling and deconcatenation. We also extend some of the theory of combinatorial Hopf algebras to bialgebras that are not connected or of finite graded dimension. Finally, we discuss several examples of quasi-symmetric functions, not necessarily of bounded degree, that may be constructed via terminal properties of combinatorial bialgebras.

Weak order and descents for monotone triangles
Published • View Publication • BIB
Monotone triangles are a rich extension of permutations that biject with alternating sign matrices. The notions of weak order and descent sets for permutations are generalized here to monotone triangles, and shown to enjoy many analogous properties. It is shown that any linear extension of the weak order gives rise to a shelling order on a poset, recently introduced by Terwilliger, whose maximal chains biject with monotone triangles; among these shellings are a family of EL-shellings. The weak order turns out to encode an action of the 0-Hecke monoid of type A on the monotone triangles, generalizing the usual bubble-sorting action on permutations. It also leads to a notion of descent set for monotone triangles, having another natural property: the surjective algebra map from the Malvenuto- Reutenauer Hopf algebra of permutations into quasisymmetric functions extends in a natural way to an algebra map out of the recently-defined Cheballah-Giraudo-Maurice algebra of alternating sign matrices.

Bialgebras for Stanley symmetric functions
Published in Discrete Math., 343 (2020), no. 4, 111778 • View Publication • BIB
We construct a non-commutative, non-cocommutative, graded bialgebra $\mathbfΠ$ with a basis indexed by the permutations in all finite symmetric groups. Unlike the formally similar Malvenuto-Poirier-Reutenauer Hopf algebra, this bialgebra does not have finite graded dimension. After giving formulas for the product and coproduct, we show that there is a natural morphism from $\mathbfΠ$ to the algebra of quasi-symmetric functions, under which the image of a permutation is its associated Stanley symmetric function. As an application, we use this morphism to derive some new enumerative identities. We also describe analogues of $\mathbfΠ$ for the other classical types. In these cases, the relevant objects are module coalgebras rather than bialgebras, but there are again natural morphisms to the quasi-symmetric functions, under which the image of a signed permutation is the corresponding Stanley symmetric function of type B, C, or D.

Equiangular lines, Incoherent sets and Quasi-symmetric designs
The absolute upper bound on the number of equiangular lines that can be found in $\mathbf{R}^d$ is $d(d+1)/2$. Examples of sets of lines that saturate this bound are only known to exist in dimensions $d=2,3,7$ or $23$. By considering the additional property of incoherence, we prove that there exists a set of equiangular lines that saturates the absolute bound and the incoherence bound if and only if $d=2,3,7$ or $23$. This allows us classify all tight spherical $5$-designs $X$ in $\mathbf{S}^{d-1}$, the unit sphere, with the property that there exists a set of $d$ points in $X$ whose pairwise inner products are positive. For a given angle $κ$, there exists a relative upper bound on the number of equiangular lines in $\mathbf{R}^d$ with common angle $κ$. We prove that classifying sets of lines that saturate this bound along with the incoherence bound is equivalent to classifying certain quasi-symmetric designs, which are combinatorial designs with two block intersection numbers. Given a further natural assumption, we classify the known sets of lines that saturate these two bounds. This family comprises of the lines mentioned above and the maximal set of $16$ equiangular lines found in $\mathbf{R}^6$. There are infinitely many known sets of lines that saturate the relative bound, so this result is surprising. To shed some light on this, we identify the $E_8$ lattice with the projection onto an $8$-dimensional subspace of a sublattice of the Leech lattice defined by $276$ equiangular lines in $\mathbf{R}^{23}$. This identification leads us to observe a correspondence between sets of equiangular lines in small dimensions and the exceptional curves of del Pezzo surfaces.

Bent Vectorial Functions, Codes and Designs
Published • View Publication • BIB
Bent functions, or equivalently, Hadamard difference sets in the elementary Abelian group $(\gf(2^{2m}), +)$, have been employed to construct symmetric and quasi-symmetric designs having the symmetric difference property. The main objective of this paper is to use bent vectorial functions for a construction of a two-parameter family of binary linear codes that do not satisfy the conditions of the Assmus-Mattson theorem, but nevertheless hold $2$-designs. A new coding-theoretic characterization of bent vectorial functions is presented.

A cornucopia of quasi-Yamanouchi tableaux
Published • View Publication • BIB
Quasi-Yamanouchi tableaux are a subset of semistandard Young tableaux and refine standard Young tableaux. They are closely tied to the descent set of standard Young tableaux and were introduced by Assaf and Searles to tighten Gessel's fundamental quasisymmetric expansion of Schur functions. The descent set and descent statistic of standard Young tableaux repeatedly prove themselves useful to consider, and as a result, quasi-Yamanouchi tableaux make appearances in many ways outside of their original purpose. Some examples, which we present in this paper, include the Schur expansion of Jack polynomials, the decomposition of Foulkes characters, and the bigraded Frobenius image of the coinvariant algebra. While it would be nice to have a product formula enumeration of quasi-Yamanouchi tableaux in the way that semistandard and standard Young tableaux do, it has previously been shown by the author that there is little hope on that front. The goal of this paper is to address a handful of the numerous alternative enumerative approaches. In particular, we present enumerations of quasi-Yamanouchi tableaux using $q$-hit numbers, semistandard Young tableaux, weighted lattice paths, and symmetric polynomials, as well as the fundamental quasisymmetric and monomial quasisymmetric expansions of their Schur generating function.

$P$-Partition Generating Function Equivalence of Naturally Labeled Posets
Published • View Publication • BIB
The $P$-partition generating function of a (naturally labeled) poset $P$ is a quasisymmetric function enumerating order-preserving maps from $P$ to $\mathbb{Z}^+$. Using the Hopf algebra of posets, we give necessary conditions for two posets to have the same generating function. In particular, we show that they must have the same number of antichains of each size, as well as the same shape (as defined by Greene). We also discuss which shapes guarantee uniqueness of the $P$-partition generating function and give a method of constructing pairs of non-isomorphic posets with the same generating function.

$P$-partitions and $p$-positivity
Published in International Mathematics Research Notices, Volume 2021, Issue 14, July 2021, Pages 10848-10907 • View Publication • BIB
Using the combinatorics of $α$-unimodal sets, we establish two new results in the theory of quasisymmetric functions. First, we obtain the expansion of the fundamental basis into quasisymmetric power sums. Secondly, we prove that generating functions of reverse $P$-partitions expand positively into quasisymmetric power sums. Consequently any nonnegative linear combination of such functions is $p$-positive whenever it is symmetric. As an application we derive positivity results for chromatic quasisymmetric functions, unicellular and vertical strip LLT polynomials, multivariate Tutte polynomials and the more general $B$-polynomials, matroid quasisymmetric functions, and certain Eulerian quasisymmetric functions, thus reproving and improving on numerous results in the literature.

Polynomials from combinatorial $K$-theory
Published in Can. J. Math.-J. Can. Math. 73 (2021) 29-62 • View Publication • BIB
We introduce two new bases of the ring of polynomials and study their relations to known bases. The first basis is the quasiLascoux basis, which is simultaneously both a $K$-theoretic deformation of the quasikey basis and also a lift of the $K$-analogue of the quasiSchur basis from quasisymmetric polynomials to general polynomials. We give positive expansions of this quasiLascoux basis into the glide and Lascoux atom bases, as well as a positive expansion of the Lascoux basis into the quasiLascoux basis. As a special case, these expansions give the first proof that the $K$-analogues of quasiSchur polynomials expand positively in multifundamental quasisymmetric polynomials of T. Lam and P. Pylyavskyy. The second new basis is the kaon basis, a $K$-theoretic deformation of the fundamental particle basis. We give positive expansions of the glide and Lascoux atom bases into this kaon basis. Throughout, we explore how the relationships among these $K$-analogues mirror the relationships among their cohomological counterparts. We make several 'alternating sum' conjectures that are suggestive of Euler characteristic calculations.

Shuffle-compatible permutation statistics II: the exterior peak set
Published in published, with editorial changes, in: Electronic Journal of Combinatorics 25 (2018), Paper #P4.17 • View Publication • BIB
This is a continuation of arXiv:1706.00750 by Gessel and Zhuang (but can be read independently from the latter). We study the shuffle-compatibility of permutation statistics -- a concept introduced in arXiv:1706.00750, although various instances of it have appeared throughout the literature before. We prove that (as Gessel and Zhuang have conjectured) the exterior peak set statistic (Epk) is shuffle-compatible. We furthermore introduce the concept of an "LR-shuffle-compatible" statistic, which is stronger than shuffle-compatibility. We prove that Epk and a few other statistics are LR-shuffle-compatible. Furthermore, we connect these concepts with the quasisymmetric functions, in particular the dendriform structure on them.

On the Schur expansion of Jack polynomials
Published in Séminaire Lotharingien de Combinatoire, 80B, No. 90, (2018) • Search Publication
We present positivity conjectures for the Schur expansion of Jack symmetric functions in two bases given by binomial coefficients. Partial results suggest that there are rich combinatorics to be found in these bases, including Eulerian numbers, Stirling numbers, quasi-Yamanouchi tableaux, and rook boards. These results also lead to further conjectures about the fundamental quasisymmetric expansions of these bases, which we prove for special cases.
A noncommutative cycle index and new bases of quasi-symmetric functions and noncommutative symmetric functions
Published • View Publication • BIB
We define a new basis of the algebra of quasi-symmetric functions by lifting the cycle-index polynomials of symmetric groups to noncommutative polynomials with coefficients in the algebra of free quasi-symmetric functions, and then projecting the coefficients to $QSym$. By duality, we obtain a basis of noncommutative symmetric functions, for which a product formula and a recurrence in the form of a combinatorial complex are obtained. This basis allows to identify noncommutative symmetric functions with the quotient of FQSym induced by the pattern-replacement relation $321 \equiv 231$ and $312 \equiv 132$.

On the Schur function expansion of a symmetric quasi-symmetric function
Published in Electronic J. Combinatorics 26 (4) (2019), #P4.50 • View Publication • BIB
Egge, Loehr, and Warrington proved a formula for the Schur function expansion of a symmetric function in terms of its expansion in fundamental quasi-symmetric functions. Their formula involves the coefficients of a modified inverse Kostka matrix. Recently Garsia and Remmel gave a simpler reformulation of Egge, Loehr, and Warrington's result, with a new proof. We give here a simple proof of Garsia and Remmel's version, using a sign-reversing involution.

The kernel of chromatic quasisymmetric functions on graphs and hypergraphic polytopes
Published • View Publication • BIB
We study the chromatic symmetric function on graphs, and show that its kernel is spanned by the modular relations. We generalize this result to the chromatic quasisymmetric function on hypergraphic polytopes, a family of generalized permutahedra. We use this description of the kernel of the chromatic symmetric function to find other graph invariants that may help us tackle the tree conjecture.

Surjections and double posets
The theory and structure of the Hopf algebra of surjections (known as WQSym, the Hopf algebra of word quasi-symmetric functions) parallels largely the one of bijections (known as FQSym or MR, the Hopf algebra of word quasi-symmetric functions or Malvenuto-Reutenauer Hopf algebra). The study of surjections from a picture and double poset theoretic point of view, which is the subject of the present article, seems instead new. The article is organized as follows. We introduce first a family of double posets, weak planar posets, that generalize the planar posets and are in bijection with surjections or, equivalently, packed words. The following sections investigate their Hopf algebraic properties, which are inherited from the Hopf algebra structure of double posets and their relations with WQSym
The Whitney Duals of a Graded Poset
We introduce the notion of a \emph{Whitney dual} of a graded poset. Two posets are Whitney duals to each other if (the absolute value of) their Whitney numbers of the first and second kind are interchanged between the two posets. We define new types of edge and chain-edge labelings which we call \emph{Whitney labelings}. We prove that every graded poset with a Whitney labeling has a Whitney dual. Moreover, we show how to explicitly construct a Whitney dual using a technique involving quotient posets. As applications of our main theorem, we show that geometric lattices, the lattice of noncrossing partitions, the poset of weighted partitions studied by González D'León-Wachs, and most of the R$^*$S-labelable posets studied by Simion-Stanley all have Whitney duals. Our technique gives a combinatorial description of a Whitney dual of the noncrossing partition lattice in terms of a family of noncrossing Dyck paths. Our method also provides an explanation of the Whitney duality between the poset of weighted partitions and a poset of rooted forests studied by Reiner and Sagan. An integral part of this explanation is a new chain-edge labeling for the poset of weighted partitions which we show is a Whitney labeling. Finally, we show that a graded poset with a Whitney labeling admits a local action of the $0$-Hecke algebra of type $A$ on its set of maximal chains. The characteristic of the associated representation is Ehrenborg's flag quasisymmetric function. The existence of this action implies, using a result of McNamara, that when the maximal intervals of the constructed Whitney duals are bowtie-free, they are also snellable. In the case where these maximal intervals are lattices, they are supersolvable.

A note on passing from a quasi-symmetric function expansion to a Schur function expansion of a symmetric function
Egge, Loehr and Warrington gave in \cite{ELW} a combinatorial formula that permits to convert the expansion of a symmetric function, homogeneous of degree $n$, in terms of Gessel's fundamental quasisymmetric functions into an expansion in terms of Schur functions. Surprisingly the Egge, Loehr and Warrington result may be shown to be simply equivalent to replacing the Gessel fundamental by a Schur function indexed by the same composition. In this paper we give a direct proof of the validity of this replacement. This interpretation of the result in \cite{ELW} has already been successfully applied to Schur positivity problems.

The Hopf monoid of Megagreedoids
We introduce megagreedoids, which generalize polymatroids, megamatroids, and greedoids. We define a quasisymmetric function invariant for a megagreedoid, and show that it has a positive expansion in the basis of fundamental quasisymmetric functions. Our proof involves lexicographic shellability. We also show that megagreedoids form a Hopf monoid. A running example is a megagreedoid associated to a rooted connected graph, and the resulting generalization of the chromatic symmetric function.
