The Eulerian distribution on the involutions of the hyperoctahedral group is unimodal
Published • View Publication • BIB
The Eulerian distribution on the involutions of the symmetric group is unimodal, as shown by Guo and Zeng. In this paper we prove that the Eulerian distribution on the involutions of the hyperoctahedral group, when viewed as a colored permutation group, is unimodal in a similar way and we compute its generating function, using signed quasisymmetric functions.

A Sundaram type bijection for SO(3): vacillating tableaux and pairs of standard Young tableaux and orthogonal Littlewood-Richardson tableaux
Based on the direct-sum-decomposition of the rth tensor power of the defining representation of the special orthogonal group SO(2k+1) one is interested in a bijective approach for determining the Frobenius characters of the isotypic components. In particular this leads us to a bijection between vacillating tableaux and pairs of standard Young tableaux and orthogonal Littlewood-Richardson tableaux, which we present for SO(3). Moreover we introduce the descent set of a vacillating tableau. As our bijection preserves this descent set, we also obtain the quasi-symmetric expansion of the Frobenius characters.

Rigidity for the Hopf algebra of quasi-symmetric functions
Published • View Publication • BIB
We investigate the rigidity for the Hopf algebra ${\rm QSym}$ of quasisymmetric functions with respect to the monomial, the fundamental and the quasisymmetric Schur basis, respectively. By establishing some combinatorial properties of the posets of compositions arising from the analogous Pieri rules for quasisymmetric functions, we show that ${\rm QSym}$ is rigid as an algebra with respect to the quasisymmetric Schur basis, and rigid as a coalgebra with respect to the monomial and the quasisymmetric Schur basis, respectively. The natural actions of reversal, complement and transpose of the labelling compositions lead to some nontrivial graded (co)algebra automorphisms of ${\rm QSym}$. We prove that the linear maps induced by the three actions are precisely the only nontrivial graded algebra automorphisms that take the fundamental basis into itself. Furthermore, the complement map on the labels gives the unique nontrivial graded coalgebra automorphism preserving the fundamental basis, while the reversal map on the labels gives the unique nontrivial graded algebra automorphism preserving the monomial basis. Therefore, ${\rm QSym}$ is rigid as a Hopf algebra with respect to the monomial and the quasisymmetric Schur basis.

Kohnert polynomials
Published • View Publication • BIB
We associate a polynomial to any diagram of unit cells in the first quadrant of the plane using Kohnert's algorithm for moving cells down. In this way, for every weak composition one can choose a cell diagram with corresponding row-counts, with each choice giving rise to a combinatorially-defined basis of polynomials. These Kohnert bases provide a simultaneous generalization of Schubert polynomials and Demazure characters for the general linear group. Using the monomial and fundamental slide bases defined earlier by the authors, we show that Kohnert polynomials stabilize to quasisymmetric functions that are nonnegative on the fundamental basis for quasisymmetric functions. For initial applications, we define and study two new Kohnert bases. The elements of one basis are conjecturally Schubert-positive and stabilize to the skew-Schur functions; the elements of the other basis stabilize to a new basis of quasisymmetric functions that contains the Schur functions.

The decomposition of 0-Hecke modules associated to quasisymmetric Schur functions
Published • View Publication • BIB
Recently Tewari and van Willigenburg constructed modules of the 0-Hecke algebra that are mapped to the quasisymmetric Schur functions by the quasisymmetric characteristic and decomposed them into a direct sum of certain submodules. We show that these submodules are indecomposable by determining their endomorphism rings.

On $e$-positivity and $e$-unimodality of chromatic quasisymmetric functions
Published • View Publication • BIB
The $e$-positivity conjecture and the $e$-unimodality conjecture of chromatic quasisymmetric functions are proved for some classes of natural unit interval orders. Recently, J. Shareshian and M. Wachs introduced chromatic quasisymmetric functions as a refinement of Stanley's chromatic symmetric functions and conjectured the $e$-positivity and the $e$-unimodality of these functions. The $e$-positivity of chromatic quasisymmetric functions implies the $e$-positivity of corresponding chromatic symmetric functions, and our work resolves Stanley's conjecture on chromatic symmetric functions of $(3+1)$-free posets for two classes of natural unit interval orders.
Quasisymmetric Power Sums
Published • View Publication • BIB
In the 1995 paper entitled "Noncommutative symmetric functions," Gelfand, et. al. defined two noncommutative symmetric function analogues for the power sum basis of the symmetric functions, along with analogues for the elementary and the homogeneous bases. They did not consider the noncommutative symmetric power sum duals in the quasisymmetric functions, which have since been explored only in passing by Derksen and Malvenuto-Reutenauer. These two distinct quasisymmetric power sum bases are the topic of this paper. In contrast to the simplicity of the symmetric power sums, or the other well known bases of the quasisymmetric functions, the quasisymmetric power sums have a more complex combinatorial description. As a result, although symmetric function proofs often translate directly to quasisymmetric analogues, this is not the case for quasisymmetric power sums. Neither is there a model for working with the quasisymmetric power sums in the work of Gelfand, et. al., which relies heavily on quasi-determinants (which can only be exploited by duality for our purposes) and is not particularly combinatorial in nature. This paper therefore offers a first glimpse at working with these two relatively unstudied quasisymmetric bases, avoiding duality where possible to encourage a previously unexplored combinatorial understanding.

Theta maps for combinatorial Hopf algebras
There is a very natural and well-behaved Hopf algebra morphism from quasisymmetric functions to peak algebra, which we call it Theta map. This paper focuses on generalizing the peak algebra by constructing generalized Theta maps for an arbitrary combinatorial Hopf algebra. The image of Theta maps lies in the odd Hopf subalgebras, so we present a strategy to find odd Hopf subalgebra of any combinatorial Hopf algebra. We also give a combinatorial description of a family of Theta maps for Malvenuto-Reutenauer Hopf algebra of permutations $\operatorname{\mathsf{\mathfrak{S}Sym}}$ whose images are generalizations of the peak algebra. We also indicate a criterion to check whether a map is a Theta map. Moreover, precise descriptions of the Theta maps for the following Hopf algebras will be presented, Hopf subalgebras of quasisymmetric functions, commutative and co-commutative Hopf algebras, and theta maps for a Hopf algebra $\mathcal{V}$ on permutations.

A directed graph generalization of chromatic quasisymmetric functions
Stanley defined the chromatic symmetric function of a graph, and Shareshian and Wachs introduced a refinement, namely the chromatic quasisymmetric function of a labeled graph. In this paper, we define the chromatic quasisymmetric function of a directed graph, which agrees with the Shareshian-Wachs definition in the acyclic case. We give an F-basis expansion for all digraphs in terms of a permutation statistic, which we call G-descents. We use this expansion to derive a p-positivity formula for all digraphs with symmetric chromatic quasisymmetric functions. We show that the chromatic quasisymmetric functions of a certain class of digraphs, called circular indifference digraphs, have symmetric coefficients. We present an e-positivity formula for the chromatic quasisymmetric function of the directed cycle, which is a t-analog of a result of Stanley. Lastly, we give a generalization of the Shareshian-Wachs e-positivity conjecture to a larger class of digraphs.

On weak peak quasisymmetric functions
Published in J. Combin. Theory A 158 (2018), 449--491 • View Publication • BIB
In this paper, we construct the weak version of peak quasisymmetric functions inside the Hopf algebra of weak composition quasisymmetric functions (WCQSym) defined by Guo, Thibon and Yu. Weak peak quasisymmetric functions (WPQSym) are studied in several aspects. First we find a natural basis of WPQSym lifting Stembridge's peak functions. Then we confirm that WPQSym is a Hopf subalgebra of WCQSym by giving explicit multiplication, comultiplication and antipode formulas. By extending Stembridge's descent-to-peak maps, we also show that WPQSym is a Hopf quotient algebra of WCQSym. On the other hand, we prove that WPQSym embeds as a Rota-Baxter subalgebra of WCQSym, thus of the free commutative Rota-Baxter algebra of weight 1 on one generator. Moreover, WPQSym can also be a Rota-Baxter quotient algebra of WCQSym.

The Chromatic Symmetric Functions of Trivially Perfect Graphs and Cographs
Published • View Publication • BIB
Richard P. Stanley defined the chromatic symmetric function of a simple graph and has conjectured that every tree is determined by its chromatic symmetric function. Recently, Takahiro Hasebe and the author proved that the order quasisymmetric functions, which are analogs of the chromatic symmetric functions, distinguish rooted trees. In this paper, using a similar method, we prove that the chromatic symmetric functions distinguish trivially perfect graphs. Moreover, we also prove that claw-free cographs, that is, $ \{K_{1,3},P_{4}\} $-free graphs belong to a known class of $ e $-positive graphs.

Macdonald cumulants, $G$-inversion polynomials and $G$-parking functions
Published in European J. Combin., 75, 172-194, 2019 • View Publication • BIB
We prove a combinatorial formula for Macdonald cumulants which generalizes the celebrated formula of Haglund for Macdonald polynomials. We provide several applications of our formula. Firstly, it gives a new, constructive proof of a strong factorization property of Macdonald polynomials proven recently by the author of this paper. Moreover it proves that Macdonald cumulants are $q,t$--positive in the monomial and in the fundamental quasisymmetric bases. Furthermore, we use our formula to prove the recent higher-order Macdonald positivity conjecture for the coefficients of the Schur polynomials indexed by hooks. Our combinatorial formula relates Macdonald cumulants to the generating function of $G$-parking functions, or equivalently to a certain specialization of the Tutte polynomials.

Shuffle-compatible permutation statistics
Published in Adv. Math. 332: 85-141, 2018 • View Publication • BIB
Since the early work of Richard Stanley, it has been observed that several permutation statistics have a remarkable property with respect to shuffles of permutations. We formalize this notion of a shuffle-compatible permutation statistic and introduce the shuffle algebra of a shuffle-compatible permutation statistic, which encodes the distribution of the statistic over shuffles of permutations. This paper develops a theory of shuffle-compatibility for descent statistics (statistics that depend only on the descent set and length) which has close connections to the theory of $P$-partitions, quasisymmetric functions, and noncommutative symmetric functions. We use our framework to prove that many descent statistics are shuffle-compatible and to give explicit descriptions of their shuffle algebras, thus unifying past results of Stanley, Gessel, Stembridge, Aguiar-Bergeron-Nyman, and Petersen.

LLT polynomials, chromatic quasisymmetric functions and graphs with cycles
Published in Discrete mathematics, 2018 • View Publication • BIB
We use a Dyck path model for unit-interval graphs to study the chromatic quasisymmetric functions introduced by Shareshian and Wachs, as well as vertical strip --- in particular, unicellular LLT polynomials. We show that there are parallel phenomena regarding $e$-positivity of these two families of polynomials. In particular, we give several examples where the LLT polynomials behave like a "mirror image" of the chromatic quasisymmetric counterpart. The Dyck path model is also extended to circular arc digraphs to obtain larger families of polynomials. This circular extensions of LLT polynomials has not been studied before. A lot of the combinatorics regarding unit interval graphs carries over to this more general setting, and we prove several statements regarding the $e$-coefficients of chromatic quasisymmetric functions and LLT polynomials. In particular, we believe that certain $e$-positivity conjectures hold in all these families above. Furthermore, we study vertical-strip LLT polynomials, for which there is no natural chromatic quasisymmetric counterpart. These polynomials are essentially modified Hall--Littlewood polynomials, and are therefore of special interest. In this more general framework, we are able to give a natural combinatorial interpretation for the $e$-coefficients for the line graph and the cycle graph, in both the chromatic and the LLT setting.
Noncommutative Bell polynomials and the dual immaculate basis
Published in Algebraic Combinatorics, Volume 1 (2018) no. 5, p. 653-676 • View Publication • BIB
We define a new family of noncommutative Bell polynomials in the algebra of free quasi-symmetric functions and relate it to the dual immaculate basis of quasi-symmetric functions. We obtain noncommutative versions of Grinberg's results [Canad. J. Math. 69 (2017), 21--53], and interpret them in terms of the tridendriform structure of WQSym. We then present a variant of Rey's self-dual Hopf algebra of set partitions [FPSAC'07, Tianjin] adapted to our noncommutative Bell polynomials and give a complete description of the Bell equivalence classes as linear extensions of explicit posets.
On Schur multiple zeta functions: A combinatoric generalization of multiple zeta functions
Published • View Publication • BIB
We introduce Schur multiple zeta functions which interpolate both the multiple zeta and multiple zeta-star functions of the Euler-Zagier type combinatorially. We first study their basic properties including a region of absolute convergence and the case where all variables are the same. Then, under an assumption on variables, some determinant formulas coming from theory of Schur functions such as the Jacobi-Trudi, Giambelli and dual Cauchy formula are established with the help of Macdonald's ninth variation of Schur functions. Moreover, we investigate the quasi-symmetric functions corresponding to the Schur multiple zeta functions. We obtain the similar results as above for them and, furthermore, describe the images of them by the antipode of the Hopf algebra of quasi-symmetric functions explicitly. Finally, we establish iterated integral representations of the Schur multiple zeta values of ribbon type, which yield a duality for them in some cases.

Dual equivalence graphs II: Transformations on locally Schur positive graphs
Dual equivalence graphs are a powerful tool in symmetric function theory that provide a general framework for proving that a given quasisymmetric function is symmetric and Schur positive. In this paper, we study a larger family of graphs that includes dual equivalence graphs and define maps that, in certain cases, transform graphs in this larger family into dual equivalence graphs. This allows us to broaden the applications of dual equivalence graphs and points the way toward a broader theory that could solve many important, long-standing Schur positivity problems.
Weighted quasisymmetric enumerator for generalized permutohedra
We introduce a weighted quasisymmetric enumerator function associated to generalized permutohedra. It refines the Billera, Jia and Reiner quasisymmetric function which also includes the Stanley chromatic symmetric function. Beside that it carries information of face numbers of generalized permutohedra. We consider more systematically the cases of nestohedra and matroid base polytopes.

Tail positive words and generalized coinvariant algebras
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $n,k,$ and $r$ be nonnegative integers and let $S_n$ be the symmetric group. We introduce a quotient $R_{n,k,r}$ of the polynomial ring $\mathbb{Q}[x_1, \dots, x_n]$ in $n$ variables which carries the structure of a graded $S_n$-module. When $r \geq n$ or $k = 0$ the quotient $R_{n,k,r}$ reduces to the classical coinvariant algebra $R_n$ attached to the symmetric group. Just as algebraic properties of $R_n$ are controlled by combinatorial properties of permutations in $S_n$, the algebra of $R_{n,k,r}$ is controlled by the combinatorics of objects called {\em tail positive words}. We calculate the standard monomial basis of $R_{n,k,r}$ and its graded $S_n$-isomorphism type. We also view $R_{n,k,r}$ as a module over the 0-Hecke algebra $H_n(0)$, prove that $R_{n,k,r}$ is a projective 0-Hecke module, and calculate its quasisymmetric and nonsymmetric 0-Hecke characteristics. We conjecture a relationship between our quotient $R_{n,k,r}$ and the delta operators of the theory of Macdonald polynomials.

A Note on Jing and Li's Type B Quasisymetric Schur Functions
Published in Annals of Combinatorics 23 (2019), no. 1, pp.159-170 • View Publication • BIB
In 2015, Jing and Li defined type B quasisymmetric Schur functions and conjectured that these functions have a positive, integral and unitriangular expansion into peak functions. We prove this conjecture, and refine their combinatorial model to give explicit expansions in monomial, fundamental and peak bases. We also show that these functions are not quasisymmetric Schur, Young quasisymmetric Schur or dual immaculate positive, and do not have a positive multiplication rule.
