Frattini Geometry of Non-Generating Complexes: Symmetry, Homology and Betti Numbers
For a finite group \(G\), let \(N(G)\) be the simplicial complex of subsets that do not generate \(G\). We separate a general Frattini-topological reduction from the structure special to finite \(p\)-groups. For every finite noncyclic group, the non-cone Frattini core is homotopy equivalent to the order complex of the proper part of the subgroup lattice of \(G/Φ(G)\). For a finite \(p\)-group this quotient is an elementary abelian vector space, and the core becomes the non-spanning complex of a uniform parallel extension of \(\mathrm{PG}(r-1,p)\), where \(r=d(G)\) and \(q=|Φ(G)|\). We use this geometry to determine the exact simplicial isomorphism data and full simplicial automorphism group, identify top homology equivariantly with the appropriate restriction of the Steinberg module, and derive modular consequences. We also give an explicit supportwise formula for every multigraded Betti number and compare it with a closed single-sum formula for the \(\mathbb Z\)-graded Betti numbers. Known matroidal and building-theoretic inputs are stated separately from the group-specific consequences. The resulting framework also yields the homotopy type, depth, regularity, projective dimension, face enumeration, and the complete Cohen--Macaulay classification.

Combinatorial flats and Schubert varieties of subspace arrangements
Published • View Publication • BIB
The lattice of flats $\mathcal L_M$ of a matroid $M$ is combinatorially well-behaved and, when $M$ is realizable, admits a geometric model in the form of a "Schubert variety of hyperplane arrangement". In contrast, the lattice of flats of a polymatroid exhibits many combinatorial pathologies and admits no similar geometric model. We address this situation by defining the lattice $\mathcal L_P$ of "combinatorial flats" of a polymatroid $P$. Combinatorially, $\mathcal L_P$ exhibits good behavior analogous to that of $\mathcal L_M$: it is graded, determines $P$ when $P$ is simple, and is top-heavy. When $P$ is realizable over a field of characteristic 0, we show that $\mathcal L_P$ is modeled by "the Schubert variety of a subspace arrangement". Our work generalizes a number of results of Ardila-Boocher and Huh-Wang on Schubert varieties of hyperplane arrangements; however, the geometry of Schubert varieties of subspace arrangements is noticeably more complicated than that of Schubert varieties of hyperplane arrangements. Many natural questions remain open.

Combinatorial twisted bialgebras and combinatorial twisted double bialgebras
We provide in this text a new framework for a family of combinatorial Hopf algebras. We adopt for this the language of species and twisted bialgebras (also known as Hopf monoids). We define the category of combinatorial twisted bialgebras (briefly, CTBs), a class of twisted bialgebras satisfying strong combinatorial conditions of compatibilities of the product and the coproduct with the underlying combinatorial structure. The considered morphisms also have to respect the combinatorial structure, in some sense. Many classical examples fit into this framework, including Hopf algebras of graphs, rooted trees, posets, hypergraphs, symmetric functions, boolean maps, etc. Most of known combinatorial Hopf algebras can be obtained from a CTB by application of a Fock functor, or by duality. A central result is the introduction of a universal CTB denoted by $\mathbf{Exch}$, built from collections of compositions satisfying a certain exchange condition. It has a special character $ε$, such that the pair $(\mathbf{Exch},ε)$ plays a role analogous to that of quasi-symmetric functions for graded and connected Hopf algebras: it is the terminal object in the category of CTBs equipped with combinatorial characters. This leads to universal morphisms that encode important information about the combinatorial structure of coproducts. The natural order on the set of compositions on a fixed set is used to define three important sub-objects $\mathbf{Exch}\_-$, $\mathbf{Exch}\_+$ and $\mathbf{Exch}\_{+\hspace{-2mm}+}$ of $\mathbf{Exch}$. We also studies polynomial invariants associated with CTBs. It establishes a correspondence between characters and polynomial invariants. Well-known invariants such as the chromatic polynomial of graphs and the Ehrhart polynomials of posets arise naturally within this framework. We show that, for a given degree, only finitely many polynomial invariants can occur. We show that these universal polynomial invariants can be used to give cancellation-free formulas for the antipode or the Eulerian idempotent, under conditions on the CTB, and use this for an example based on rooted trees, coming from a Hopf algebra used in linguistics. Results are also obtained for families of polynomial invariants with the alternating sign condition, or satisfying a reciprocity principle. We also extend the theory to combinatorial twisted double bialgebras (briefly, CTDBs), which involve two interacting coproduct structures. These generalize previously known examples arising from graphs, posets, hypergraphs, and rooted trees. The twisted approach preserves the combinatorial richness of these structures while providing a unified algebraic framework. We show that not any CTB can be made a CTDB, leading to the introduction of the notion of quasi-cocommutativity. In particular, we show that $\mathbf{Exch}\_+$ is not a CTDB, and construct a sub-object which is, in a unique way, and maximal for the inclusion. In the cocommutative case, simplifications naturally occur, and we show that in this case, a CTB of hypergraphs plays a central role, especially two sub-objects based on connectedness systems and antichain covers. We also show that, in the cocommutative case, the universal polynomial invariants are always chromatic polynomials of hypergraphs, no matter which CTB is considered. Finally, forgetting the combinatorial underlying structure, we study the algebraic structure of $\mathrm{Exch}$, with the help of a twisted version of Loday and Ronco's rigidity theorem for infinitesimal bialgebras.

Signed seeds and G-gradings on cluster algebras
The theory of cluster algebras is closely connected to the theory of total positivity; indeed, the desire to better understand total positivity was one of the main motivations for Fomin and Zelevinsky's introduction of cluster algebras [arXiv:math/0104151]. In particular, any cluster variety whose coordinate ring has a cluster structure has a natural notion of positive part: the subset of the variety where all cluster variables are positive. In this paper, we explain that there are other signed cells contained in cluster varieties that are equally natural from a cluster-theoretic point of view. These come from signed seeds, which can be thought of as a $\mathbb{Z}/2\mathbb{Z}$-grading on cluster variables, and which were introduced in [arXiv:2310.17727] in the context of the amplituhedron. More generally, given any abelian group $G$, we introduce the notion of a $G$-graded seed for a cluster algebra, which is a way of assigning elements of $G$ to each cluster variable which is compatible with the cluster structure. When $G$ is the multiplicative group $\{-1, 1\}$, this recovers the above notion of signed seed; when $G = \mathbb{C}^*$, this recovers the notion of cluster automorphism group [GSV10] or cluster dilation group [arXiv:2603.17890]; and when $G = \mathbb{Z}^d$, this recovers the notion of graded cluster algebra studied by Grabowski-Launois [arXiv:1301.2133], Grabowski [arXiv:1309.6170] and Gekhtman-Shapiro-Vainshtein [GSV10, Section 5.2] (which had previously appeared in special cases in work of Fomin-Zelevinsky [arXiv:math/0602259]). The examples we study include the space of square matrices, symmetric matrices, skew-symmetric matrices, positroid varieties, and amplituhedron tiles. We also connect this notion to tropical mutation when $G = \mathbb{R}$ or $\mathbb{Z}$.

Matching algebras and their Dunkl subalgebras
For a finite simple graph $G = (V, E)$, we consider the quotient algebra $\mathcal M(G)$ of the polynomial ring in the variables $u_e$ (for $e \in E$) by the ideal generated by all products $u_e u_f$ for non-disjoint edges $e$ and $f$ (including all squares $u_e^2$). This quotient is called the matching algebra of $G$, since it has a basis indexed by the matchings of $G$. In this quotient, we define a subalgebra $\mathcal D(G)$ generated by the signed incidence sums $θ_v=\sum_{e=(v,w)}u_e-\sum_{e=(w,v)}u_e$ for all $v \in V$ (where all edges of $G$ are oriented arbitrarily); we call this the Dunkl matching algebra. We show that, as a graded vector space, $\mathcal D(G)$ is dual to the span of all polynomials $p_M = \prod_{(i,j) \in M} (x_i - x_j)$, where $M$ ranges over all matchings of $G$. For the complete graph $K_n$, the latter span is a direct sum of two-row Specht modules (one in each degree); thus its Hilbert series is that of the Catalan triangle, and, in characteristic zero, the Dunkl matching algebra can be presented by linear and quadratic relations. For arbitrary graphs, we formulate the saturation problem of deciding when the selected matching Specht generators $p_M$ in a given degree $k$ span the full two-row Specht module $S^{(n-k,k)}$. We show that saturation in degree $k$ forces $k$-connectivity, that saturation in degree $2$ is equivalent to $2$-connectivity, and that $k$-linked graphs are saturated in degree $k$. We also prove saturation in every possible degree whenever the complement of $G$ is a matching. We show that the Dunkl matching algebra equals the full matching algebra exactly for forests, and give an explicit Hilbert series formula for unicyclic graphs.

A generalized Terao Conjecture for line arrangements
For a line arrangement $\mathcal{A} \colon f=0$ in $\mathbb{P}^2$, let $ν(\mathcal{A})$ be the maximal dimension of a graded piece of the Jacobian module of $f$. We study the conjecture that $ν(\mathcal{A})$ depends only on the intersection lattice of $\mathcal{A}$. It is known that $\mathcal{A}$ is free if and only if $ν(\mathcal{A})=0$, and hence this conjecture is a strengthening of Terao's conjecture for line arrangements. We show that the conjecture holds for arrangements of at most $13$ lines, except possibly for arrangements of exactly $13$ lines whose intersection points have maximal multiplicity $5$.

The Orlik--Solomon algebra of a locally geometric poset and cohomology of complex abelian arrangements
We construct an Orlik--Solomon algebra for any locally geometric poset as a natural generalization of the one for geometric lattices. This algebra has several interesting features, including a combinatorial no-broken-circuit basis that we obtain through Gröbner basis theory. When the poset captures the intersection data of an arrangement of certain subgroups in a complex abelian Lie group, we infuse the Orlik--Solomon algebra with topological information to compute the cohomology of the arrangement complement. In particular, when the Lie group is compact, we present an explicit differential graded algebra whose cohomology is the rational cohomology of the arrangement complement. We further exhibit a family of abelian arrangements whose integer cohomology has torsion.

Open problems on relations of numerical semigroups
Published in Recent Progress in Ring and Factorization Theory. Rings and Factorizations 2023. Springer Proceedings in Mathematics & Statistics, vol 477 (2025) • View Publication • BIB
We collect some open problems about minimal presentations of numerical semigroups and, more generally, about defining ideals and free resolutions of their semigroup rings and associated graded rings. We emphasize both long-standing problems and more recent questions and developments.
DG Algebra Structures on Mapping Cones with an Application to Edge Ideals
We generalize a construction of Herzog and Takayama pertaining to differential graded algebra structures on mapping cones. Via this generalization, we provide the minimal free resolution of the edge ideal of a new graph built from suspension over a vertex cover of an old graph, and we discuss when this process preserves differential graded algebra structure on the respective resolutions.

Füredi's Conjecture and a Sharp Strengthening
We prove a strengthening of Füredi's conjecture on strong Bollobás $t$-systems. For nonnegative integers $t$ and $s$, a family of $m\ge2$ pairs of finite sets $(A_i,B_i)$ satisfying $|A_i\cap B_i|\le t$ and $|A_i\cap B_j|>t+s$ for all $i\ne j$ satisfies \[ \sum_{i=1}^{m} \frac{\binom{|B_i|-t+s}{s}} {\binom{|A_i|+|B_i|-2t}{|A_i|-t}}\le1. \] When $s=0$, this is precisely Füredi's conjectured weighted inequality. The proof is based on a local growth inequality for graded exterior ideals, a basis-exchange construction, and a common-section reduction. The same method gives the corresponding inequality for subspaces over arbitrary fields. We also determine a best possible upper bound for the Füredi weight sum, construct equality examples with an arbitrary prescribed number of pairs, and derive further inequalities from two-sided basis exchanges.

Binomial edge ideals of bipartite complements of even cycles
Let $G_n$ be the bipartite complement of the even cycle $C_{2n}$, and let $J_{G_n}$ be its binomial edge ideal. For $n\geq5$, we study the interaction between the combinatorial structure of $G_n$ and the algebraic invariants of $S_{G_n}/J_{G_n}$. Our main combinatorial ingredient is a classification of the subsets of $V(G_n)$ having the cut point property, obtained through an analysis of disconnected induced subgraphs of $G_n$. We use this classification to describe the minimal primes and to study dimension and degree-theoretic invariants of $J_{G_n}$ and $S_{G_n}/J_{G_n}$. We also study local Vasconcelos numbers, graded Betti numbers and the Hilbert series, and obtain information on projective dimension and depth. Finally, we analyze induced paths in $G_n$ and derive corresponding bounds for the Castelnuovo--Mumford regularity.

Combinatorial aspects of the Delannoy Lattice
The Delannoy numbers $d(n,k)$ count lattice paths from $(0,0)$ to $(n-k,k)$ using steps $(1,0),(0,1)$ and $(1,1)$. This paper introduces a graded poset $\mathcal{D}_n$ on the Delannoy paths ending on the line $x+y=n$, whose rank-generating function is the Delannoy polynomial $d_n(x)=\sum_{k=0}^n d(n,k)x^k$. We prove that $\\mathcal{D}_n$ is a self-dual lattice, which is call the Delannoy lattice. By establishing an explicit symmetric Boolean decomposition, we show that $\mathcal{D}_n$ is a symmetric Boolean order, thereby recovering the $γ$-positivity of $d_n(x)$. Such a decomposition is refined to a symmetric chain decomposition with the chain cover property, and is applied to determine all maximum antichains. We also investigate other combinatorial aspects of $\mathcal{D}_n$, including supersolvability, the Möbius number, characteristic polynomials, and zeta polynomials.

Moulds, Bimoulds, and some Lie algebras
The Lie algebra of multiple zeta values is realized as the space $\operatorname{ARI}^{\operatorname{pol}}_{\underline{al}\ast \underline{il}}$ of alternal moulds whose swap is alternil up to a constant mould, equipped with the $ari$ bracket. In this paper, we study the larger space $\operatorname{BARI}_{\underline{il},swap}^{\operatorname{pol}}$ of alternil, swap-invariant bimoulds, which is conjecturally the Lie algebra for multiple $q$-zeta values. We propose an explicit formula for a Lie bracket $uri$ on this space. Moreover, we prove that the Lie algebra $\operatorname{ARI}^{\operatorname{pol}}_{\underline{al}\ast \underline{il}}$ embeds into $\operatorname{BARI}_{\underline{il},swap}^{\operatorname{pol}}$, with the $ari$ bracket translating directly into the $uri$ bracket. Finally, we examine the associated-depth graded of $\operatorname{BARI}_{\underline{il},swap}^{\operatorname{pol}}$, extending the known depth-graded setup for $\operatorname{ARI}_{\underline{al}\ast \underline{il}}^{\operatorname{pol}}$.

Positive formulas for q-Zeta numerators of Ferrers-cell posets
We give explicit positive formulas for Chapoton's $q$-Zeta numerators of the Ferrers-cell posets $F_{\mathbf b}=\{(i,c):1\leq i\leq r, i\leq c\leq b_i\}$, where $b_1\geq\cdots\geq b_r\geq r$, and for every interval of their minimum-augmented lattices. A constructive signed EL-labelling expresses the numerator as a descent enumerator over boundary-admissible path words. A finite transfer-matrix recursion recovers the full multivariate descent-set polynomial. For trapezoidal boundaries, Gaussian-binomial formulas describe every interval and every $t$-slice. At $q=1$, a Jacobi-polynomial transform gives simple negative zeros, strict fixed-offset interlacing, and an explicit arcsine push-forward limit. We also obtain algebraic fixed-offset generating functions and the growth rate $(1+\sqrt t)^2$ for $t\geq0$. The standard positive-root posets of types $A_r$, $B_r$, and $C_r$ are specializations, graded by root height minus one with Chapoton's fixed denominator. For types $B_r$ and $C_r$, this yields all-rank coefficientwise positivity, the reversed-ballot formula, the specialization $[t^k]\mathbb{H}_{P_r,\operatorname{rk}}(1,t)=\binom{r-1}{k}^2$, and sharp slice degrees with unique leading monomials. The main results of this paper were obtained through a generative-AI workflow using OpenAI GPT-5.6 Sol, Anthropic Claude Fable 5, and Grok 4.6. OpenAI GPT-6 Astra was used for subsequent proof and citation review and manuscript revision. Further details appear in the disclosure at the end of the paper.

Kostant $ρ$-decomposition of homology I. Finite-dimensional representations
We give explicit, uniform formulas for the graded characters and total ranks of the Lie algebra homology of finite-dimensional representations in all classical types. In many cases, these compute the Tor groups of finite length modules over polynomial rings, and this is the first in a series of papers to investigate total rank conjectures from this perspective. These formulas refine and generalize the classical $ρ$-decomposition of Kostant, and in particular we prove that the characters involved exhibit three structural phenomena: divisibility (by a large power of 2), equidistribution, and uniform factorization formulas.

Hilbert functions over the exterior algebra and f-vectors in higher rank I: Amata-Crupi monomial modules, Kozlov polytopes, and r-vectors of simplicial complexes
Let $E$ be the exterior algebra on $n$ generators over a field, and let $F$ be a graded free $E$-module with $r$ generators, of degrees $d_1 \le \dots \le d_r$. We determine the convex hull of the set of Hilbert functions of the quotients $F/M$, where $M$ runs over the monomial submodules of Amata and Crupi. The hull is the Minkowski sum of $r$ shifted copies of one and the same simplex: the Kozlov simplex, which Kozlov proved in 1997 to be the convex hull of the $f$-vectors of simplicial complexes on $n$ vertices. For $r=1$ the statement is Kozlov's theorem, so this is a rank-$r$ generalization of it. We give a self-contained proof, including a short proof of Kozlov's theorem from the local Lubell-Yamamoto-Meshalkin inequality, and an explicit facet description of the Kozlov simplex that appears not to be recorded in the literature. Along the way we isolate the class of submodules for which the argument works, the ideal-direct-sum modules, and show by example that the Hilbert function of a graded submodule outside that class need not be a shifted sum of $f$-vectors at all. The combinatorial content is stated separately, in language that uses no algebra, as a result on $r$-vectors of simplicial complexes and their $ff$-vectors. Finally we describe the vertex structure of the Minkowski sum -- which sums of vertices of the summands survive as vertices -- proving the answer for the all-ones leg vector at every rank and for the Kozlov leg vector at rank two.

The Theta Conjecture
We define a diagonal-inversion statistic on labeled Dyck paths carrying both decorated rises and decorated contractible valleys. This gives an explicit candidate for a bivariate refinement of the univariate Theta conjecture of D'Adderio, Iraci, and Vanden Wyngaerd, recently proved by D'Adderio, Pagaria, and the authors of this work. The univariate conjecture can be recovered from our bivariate version by setting $q=1$. The new conjecture recovers the rise and valley versions of the Delta conjecture when either decoration parameter vanishes, and provides a combinatorial interpretation of the symmetric function $Θ_{e_l} Θ_{e_k}\nabla e_{n-k-l}$, which is also conjectured to be the Frobenius characteristic of a certain graded module of diagonal coinvariants with two sets of commuting variables and two sets of anticommuting variables. In support of the Theta conjecture and its touching refinement, we prove its Schröder case, that is, the scalar product of the symmetric function side with $e_{n-d} h_d$ matches the combinatorial side restricted to Schröder paths. The proof uses a finer combinatorial argument than the previously known cases, leveraging two Gaussian product identities.

Homological invariants of Edge Ideals associated to powers of cycles
Let $G_{n,m}=\overline{\C_n^{[m]}}$, where $\C_n^{[m]}$ denotes the closed $m$th power of the $n$-cycle. We study the graded Betti numbers and homological invariants of the edge ring of $G_{n,m}$ in the range $n\geq 3m+1$. These graphs form a natural family for the study of edge rings whose regularity can be compared explicitly with the induced matching number. In particular, for $n\geq4m+1$, the graph $G_{n,m}$ has induced matching number one, whereas its edge ring has regularity two. Our approach is based on a characterization of the homology of the induced subcomplexes of the independence complex $Δ(G_{n,m})$. We introduce a family $\mathcal{S}_V(k,m)$ of vertex subsets characterized by their successive gaps around the cycle and show that, for $W\in\mathcal{S}_V(k,m)$, the induced subcomplex $Δ[W]$ has the homotopy type of $\mathbb{S}^1$, whereas for $W\notin\mathcal{S}_V(k,m)$ all its positive-dimensional reduced homology groups vanish. Combining this characterization with Hochster's formula and an explicit enumeration of $\mathcal{S}_V(k,m)$, we obtain a closed formula for the graded Betti numbers in the second strand. We further determine the extremal Betti number, regularity, and projective dimension of the edge ring of $G_{n,m}$. Finally, we compute the $f$- and $h$-vectors of the independence complex and use the Hilbert series to determine the graded Betti numbers in the linear strand. The case $m=2$ recovers the corresponding results for complements of squares of cycles obtained in~\cite{RatherSquare}.

Asymptotic $\mathrm{v}$-number of graded families of ideals and the Newton-Okounkov region
In this paper, we prove that for Noetherian graded families $\mathcal{I} = \{I_k\}_{k \ge 0}$ of homogeneous ideals in a Noetherian $\mathbb{N}$-graded Noetherian domain, $\lim\limits_{k \to \infty} \frac{\mathrm{v}(I_k)}{k}$ exists, and is given by $\frac{α(I_r)}{r}$ for some $r \ge 1$, where $α(I)$ denotes the initial degree. Extending these results to integral closures, we show that $ \lim\limits_{k\to\infty}\frac{\mathrm{v}(\overline{I_k})}{k} = \lim\limits_{k\to\infty}\frac{α(\overline{I_k})}{k}=\lim\limits_{k\to\infty}\frac{\mathrm{v}(I_k)}{k}=\lim\limits_{k\to\infty}\frac{α(I_k)}{k} $. For a graded family of monomial ideals in a polynomial ring, we provide a combinatorial interpretation of these limits via Newton--Okounkov regions $Δ(\mathcal{I})$. This connection is further generalized to arbitrary homogeneous ideals using good valuations. We also establish that both $\operatorname{reg}(I_k)$ and $\mathrm{v}(I_k)$ are eventually quasi-linear functions of $k$ for any Noetherian graded family. For a stable monomial ideal $I$ we show that $\mathrm{v}(I) < \operatorname{reg}(I)$. Finally, for a zero-dimensional homogeneous ideal $I$ in a polynomial ring $S$, we prove that $\mathrm{v}(I) < e(S/I)$, where $e(S/I)$ denotes the multiplicity.

Categorification of $k$-Schur functions and refined Macdonald positivity
We establish a substantial part of the categorification framework for $k$-Schur functions proposed in Chen's Ph.D.\ thesis, written under the supervision of Mark Haiman. More precisely, we realize $k$-Schur functions as the graded characters of a distinguished family of objects in a certain module category and establish module-theoretic analogues of several foundational properties of $k$-Schur functions. A final part of Chen's framework predicts a homological characterization of modules admitting filtrations by these distinguished objects; we establish this characterization under an additional combinatorial hypothesis. In addition, we unconditionally prove that modules arising in this framework admit filtrations whose subquotients are affine Demazure modules of level $k$. As a consequence, modified Macdonald polynomials expand positively in the characters of affine Demazure modules. This may be viewed as a homological refinement of Macdonald positivity, arising from an intrinsic $\mathrm{ext}$-orthogonality condition on the corresponding Garsia--Haiman modules. We also prove the combinatorial hypothesis for $m \le 2k$ in the appendix and verify it computationally for $m\leq 19$, yielding $k$-Schur positivity of modified Macdonald polynomials in these cases. Our approach builds on our previous work on the algebraic and geometric realization of Catalan symmetric functions, a class encompassing both $k$-Schur and Hall--Littlewood functions.
