Log-concavity and unimodality of cluster monomials in fan coordinates of type $A_n$
We prove that every cluster monomial of type $A_n$ is log-concave and unimodal with respect to its Laurent expansion in a fan initial cluster. We derive a coefficient formula for laminar interval products arising from compatible diagonals in the polygon model. In even rank, we reduce log-concavity in fan coordinates to log-concavity along integer lines. In odd rank, we use convolution to handle the coefficient sums arising from the fan substitution. This gives partial affirmative answers to the log-concavity conjecture of Chen-Huang-Sun and the unimodality conjecture of Chen. Our result also complements Shen's study on the supports of products of canonical basis elements for cluster X-varieties of type $A_n$.

Unimodality of Forest Independence Polynomials
For a finite forest $F$ let $i_k(F)$ be the number of independent sets of $F$ with $k$ vertices. Zhang and Li proved that the sequence $i_0(F),i_1(F),\dots,i_{α(F)}(F)$ is unimodal for every finite forest $F$, which answers Erdős Problem 993. We give a second proof. It starts from their decomposition relative to a fixed independent set and from the bounds of Zhang and Li and of Fang, Lu, Nevo, Yao and Zheng that confine a valley of the sequence to an explicit window of ranks. For a forest with at least $25$ vertices, one moment argument excludes a valley at every rank of the window: at the activity where the hard-core mean equals the rank, the size of a random independent set is a mixture of binomial laws over an independent set of maximum weight, a valley is a moment inequality for this mixture, and it is excluded by duality given three bounds that hold for every forest, on the variance of the number of free vertices and on its Laplace transforms, and on the variance ratio. The variance bound is proved by hand up to finitely many interval checks and the other two bounds are verified by computer on finite interval-arithmetic coverings; on the resulting parameter domain a valley is excluded by exact tests on finitely many rational boxes while the mean number of free vertices is below an explicit starting mean between $19$ and $50$, and above it by one inequality, with explicit constants, for the fibers of a weighted valley kernel, proved by hand up to a finite list of explicit checks and averaged over the mixture. Forests with at most $24$ vertices are treated by exact counting, by hand except for exact rational evaluations of two explicit formulas at $43$ parameter triples. No forest is enumerated. A formal proof of the theorem in Lean 4 accompanies the paper.

Ehrhart Properties under Operations on Lattice Polytopes
This paper investigates the preservation of three classes of Ehrhart properties under various operations on lattice polytopes. These operations include Cartesian products, lattice joins, lattice pyramids, free sums, Minkowski sums, Cayley sums, reflexive polarity, and integral dilations. Specifically, we consider the following properties frequently studied in Ehrhart theory: (i): Positivity of Ehrhart coefficients, including Ehrhart positivity and magic positivity. In particular, we present lattice point counting formulas for the polytopes generated by these operations. (ii): Coefficient properties of the $h^*$-polynomial, including symmetry, unimodality, log-concavity, ultra log-concavity, real-rootedness, and $γ$-positivity. (iii): Geometric properties, including the spanning property, the integer decomposition property, very ampleness, and the existence of unimodular triangulation, regular unimodular triangulation, and quadratic triangulation. We determine which properties are preserved under these eight operations, establishing preservation theorems or constructing explicit counterexamples. Furthermore, when a property is not preserved in general, we investigate sufficient or equivalent conditions for its preservation.

Two families of Hermite normal form simplices
We study Ehrhart coefficients, the integer decomposition property, and unimodular triangulations for two families of Hermite normal form simplices considered by Bruckamp, Caicedo, and Juhnke. The first family consists of simplices of the form $S_{\boldsymbol{a}}=\mathrm{conv}(0,e_1,\ldots,e_{d-1},\boldsymbol{a})$, where $\boldsymbol{a}=(a_1,\ldots,a_{d-1},N)$, and the second consists of the simplices $T_{d,N}=\mathrm{conv}\bigl(0,e_1,\ldots,e_{d-2},(d-2,\ldots,d-2,d-1,0),(1,\ldots,1,N)\bigr)$. For the family $T_{d,N}$, we prove unimodality of the Ehrhart coefficients in every dimension and determine the log-concave and real-rooted cases. For the subfamily $S_{\boldsymbol{a}}$ with $\boldsymbol{a}=(N-q,\ldots,N-q,N)$, we characterize both the integer decomposition property and the existence of a regular unimodular triangulation via a congruence condition on a negative continued fraction. We also give an arithmetic test for the integer decomposition property and finite triangulation tests for $S_{\boldsymbol{a}}$ with arbitrary $\boldsymbol{a}$. These results address three open questions of Bruckamp, Caicedo, and Juhnke.
Envelopes of upper bounds for nonbinary constant-weight and constant-composition codes
Deriving upper bounds on code size from existing bounds is a classical approach in coding theory, dating back to the seminal results of Elias, Bassalygo, and Levenshtein. We study a framework encompassing the Bassalygo--Elias and Levenshtein inequalities for binary and nonbinary (constant-weight) codes and provides certain generalizations. The asymptotic cost of transferring a bound between different symbol compositions is expressed in terms of mutual information, yielding an information-theoretic optimal transport formulation. We determine the optimal permutation-transport cost between arbitrary compositions in terms of their least common majorant in the majorization order. Specializing to symmetric constant-weight compositions yields explicit transport profiles. As a byproduct, we establish unimodality of the asymptotic constant-weight rate as a function of the relative weight. We prove that the resulting closure operators are idempotent and that applying transport before outer Bassalygo--Elias averaging leaves the unrestricted bound obtained from the same input unchanged. We also establish necessary and sufficient conditions for an upper bound to be a fixed point of the closure operator. Since the asymptotic rate function is an upper bound for itself and it is a fixed point, we conclude the Schur concavity of the constant-composition rate function. Finally, we survey existing upper bounds for binary and nonbinary constant-weight and constant-composition codes, combine them into optimized envelopes within the transport framework, and obtain improved theoretical and numerical bounds.

Unimodality of Kazhdan--Lusztig polynomials of sparse paving matroids
We prove that the Kazhdan--Lusztig polynomial of a loopless sparse paving matroid is unimodal. When the rank is at least five and the corank is positive, we show that the coefficient sequence is strictly unimodal except for three explicitly determined parameter triples, each giving two equal maximal coefficients. We also determine the modes and classify the degenerate loopless sparse paving matroids of positive rank and corank.

Real-rootedness and ultra log-concavity of rank-two matroid Ehrhart $h^*$-polynomials
We prove that the Ehrhart $h^*$-polynomial of a rank-two matroid with exactly three parallel classes is real-rooted whenever its smallest parallel class has size at most three. This bound is sharp: the rank-two matroids with parallel-class sizes $(4,561,600)$ and $(4,a,a+29)$, for all sufficiently large integers $a$, have $h^*$-polynomials that are not real-rooted. These counterexamples disprove Ferroni's real-rootedness conjecture. Their duals are cycle matroids of theta graphs and have the same $h^*$-polynomials. Nevertheless, every matroid of rank two or corank two has a positive $h^*$-coefficient sequence that is ultra log-concave of order equal to the polynomial's degree. In particular, the unimodality conjecture holds in both cases.

Ooms spectra of Frobenius maximal parabolics: strict unimodality and Euclidean log-concavity
We study the Ooms multiplicities of Frobenius maximal parabolics $W(a,b)$ of type~$A$. For $a=mb+r$ with $1\le r<b$, the Euclidean algorithm relates their potential histograms to those of the smaller algebra $W(r,b-r)$. We prove strict unimodality for every positive coprime pair: the multiplicities increase strictly to the equal central values at eigenvalues $0$ and $1$, then decrease strictly. This strengthens the recent maximal-parabolic unimodality theorem of Giaquinto, Irving, Lauve, and Mastnak. We also prove log-concavity for the unbounded families $W(mb\pm t,b)$, where $t\in\{1,2,3\}$, $b>t$, $\gcd(b,t)=1$, and $m\ge1$. These results cover every Frobenius case with smaller block at most $8$, and also smaller block $10$. For each fixed residue class, we then prove that log-concavity of the whole family is determined by finitely many initial spectra. The finite cutoff is obtained symbolically. Exact integer verification of the resulting finite lists proves strict internal log-concavity whenever the smaller block is at most $128$, with no bound on the larger block. The unrestricted log-concavity conjecture is not proved here.

Proof of Almkvist's conjecture on the unimodality of partition polynomials
For integers $r\ge2$ and $n\ge1$, let $$ F_{r,n}(q)=\prod_{k=1}^{n}\frac{1-q^{rk}}{1-q^k}. $$ The coefficient of $q^j$ in \(F_{r,n}(q)\) counts partitions of $j$ into parts at most $n$, each occurring at most $r-1$ times. Hughes proved that $F_{2,n}(q)=\prod_{k=1}^{n}(1+q^k)$ is unimodal for every $n\ge 1$. This result was reproved by Stanley using an algebraic approach and Odlyzko and Richmond using an analytic approach. Almkvist conjectured that $F_{r,n}(q)$ is unimodal in the following two cases: every even $r$ and every $n\ge 1$; every odd $r$ and every $n\ge 11$. He proved that this conjecture is true for $3\le r \le 20$ and $r=100,101$. In this paper, we completely settle the conjecture.

Latin Eulerian Numbers
We introduce \emph{Latin Eulerian numbers} $\LE{n\atop k_1,\dots,k_n}$, a multivariate refinement of classical Eulerian numbers counting order-$n$ Latin squares by column ascents. We establish their fundamental symmetries, univariate marginals, and an exact multiplicity divisibility property. For the total ascent statistic $Σ(L)=\sum_i k_i(L)$, we prove the sharp, isolated bounds $n-1 \le Σ(L) \le (n-1)^2$, demonstrating that the adjacent values $n$ and $(n-1)^2-1$ are strictly unattainable. To analyze intermediate values, we show that symbol permutations typically ignored in classical enumeration directly govern $Σ$ via an exact formula. This insight yields explicit constructions for the interior range, motivates a unimodality conjecture for the total ascent distribution.
Unimodality of Independence Polynomials for Sufficiently Large Forests
We prove that the independence sequence of every sufficiently large forest is unimodal. The result follows from establishing log-concavity on a central interval of the sequence, along with monotonicity of the initial and final segments. The main analytic step is a central limit theorem for the size of a random independent set sampled with the hard-core model, uniform over all forests and over an interval of positive fugacities.

Unimodality for IDP Lattice Simplices of Prime Normalized Volume
Recently, Ferroni constructed a family of counterexamples to the well-known conjecture in Ehrhart theory stating that the $h^*$-polynomial of a lattice polytope with the integer decomposition property is unimodal. This raises the question of whether the $h^*$-polynomial of a lattice simplex with the integer decomposition property remains unimodal. In this note, we prove that every lattice simplex with the integer decomposition property and prime normalized volume has a unimodal $h^*$-polynomial. Furthermore, we establish several sufficient conditions for the unimodality of the $h^*$-polynomial of such simplices.
An Orthogonal View of Gaußian Polynomials
We establish an alternative, ``perpendicular" collection of generating functions for the coefficients of Gaussian polynomials, $\begin{bmatrix}N+m\\m\end{bmatrix}_q$. We provide a general characterization of these perpendicular generating functions. For small values of $m$, unimodality of the coefficients of Gaussian polynomials is easily proved from these generating functions. Additionally, we uncover new and surprising identities for the differences of Gaussian polynomial coefficients, including a very unexpected infinite family of congruences for coefficients of $\begin{bmatrix}N+4\\4\end{bmatrix}_q$.
Independence polynomials and the weak Lefschetz property for tadpole graphs
Let $T_{m,n}$ be the tadpole graph obtained by joining a cycle $C_m$ to a path $P_n$ by a bridge. We prove that the independence polynomial of every tadpole graph is unimodal and establish sharp bounds for its mode. The unimodality result follows from a general criterion for graphs obtained by attaching a path to a fixed vertex. Over a field of characteristic zero, we also give a complete classification of the pairs $(m,n)$ for which the Artinian algebra defined by the edge ideal of $T_{m,n}$ together with the squares of all variables has the weak Lefschetz property.

Quantum entropy and the Bannai--Ito multiplicity conjecture
We prove that the multiplicities of every symmetric $Q$-polynomial association scheme form a log-concave sequence. This resolves the 1984 unimodality conjecture of Bannai and Ito and establishes both related inequalities conjectured by Stanton. Our proof is a novel application of strong subadditivity and weak monotonicity inequalities for quantum entropy.
Fence Posets, Good Gradings and Frobenius Maximal Parabolics
Let $\mathfrak L$ be a Frobenius maximal parabolic subalgebra of $\mathfrak{sl}_n$. For any $F\in\mathfrak L^*$ for which the Kirillov form $B_F(x,y)=F([x,y])$ is non-degenerate, let $\widehat F$ denote the associated principal element. We prove that the multiplicities of the eigenvalues of $\operatorname{ad}_{\widehat F}$ on $\mathfrak L$ form a unimodal sequence symmetric about $\frac12$. We also prove that the multiplicities of the eigenvalues of $\operatorname{ad}_{\widehat F}$ on $\mathfrak{gl}_n$ form a unimodal sequence symmetric about $0$. The proof relates the ranked meander associated to $\mathfrak L$ to the order ideals of a related fence poset through Panyushev reduction. The known unimodality of the rank polynomial of the fence poset implies that of the meander, which in turn determines a good grading of $\mathfrak{gl}_n$ in the sense of Elashvili and Kac. We prove that this grading coincides with that induced by the principal element and that the pyramid associated to this grading may be filled in such a way that its good element $e$ lies in $\mathfrak L$. The two unimodality results then follow from the injectivity properties of $\operatorname{ad}_e$ coming from the good grading and the duality induced by the bilinear form $B_F$.

Unimodality shenanigans in Ehrhart theory
We show the existence of counterexamples to a four-decade-old conjecture attributed to Stanley concerning the unimodality of $h^*$-polynomials of IDP polytopes. As additional applications of our main constructions, we also disprove a conjecture by Brenti on the log-concavity of $h^*$-polynomials of Gorenstein IDP polytopes, and a conjecture by Ferroni and Higashitani concerning the log-concavity of the Ehrhart series of IDP polytopes. We also answer their question about the existence of very ample polytopes with non-log-concave interior Ehrhart series. Our class of examples arises by taking Cayley sums of rectangular prisms, and hence they possess regular unimodular flag triangulations by a result of Haase, Paffenholz, Piechnik and Santos. For the unimodality conjecture, we can even find smooth counterexamples.

Log-concavity and unimodality of Hodge numbers of Hilbert schemes of points over a surface
Let \(S\) be a smooth projective complex surface with irregularity \(q=h^{1,0}(S)\) and geometric genus \(g=h^{2,0}(S)\), and let \(S^{[n]}\) denote its Hilbert scheme of \(n\) points. We prove that, for every \(n\ge0\), the sequence \[ \left(h^{p,0}\bigl(S^{[n]}\bigr)\right)_{p=0}^{2n} \] is log-concave if and only if \(g\le\binom{q+1}{2}\). Moreover, log-concavity of all these sequences is already equivalent to log-concavity of the sequence for \(n=2\). We also prove that these sequences are unimodal for every \(n\ge0\) if and only if \(q\ge1\) or \(g=0\), and that this condition is already detected by the sequence for \(n=1\).

$p$-numerical semigroup of the sequence of consecutive odd integers
We prove the $p$-Frobenius problems proposed as Conjectures 7.1 and 7.5 developed by T. Komatsu and R. Pandey (Bull. Korean Math. Soc. 2025;62:1397--1409.) for two families of consecutive odd integers. For integers $r,L,n\ge0$, the bounded restricted partition function $p_{\le r}^{(\le L)}(\le n)$ counts partitions of $n$ into at most $r$ parts, each at most $L$. Thus the bounded restricted partition functions $p_{\le 3}^{(\le a)}(\le s)$and $p_{\le 3}^{(\le a+1)}(\le s)$ play central roles in the proofs. Their generating functions are Gaussian polynomials, whose symmetry and unimodality provide a common tool for treating both families.

On the Asymptotic Normality and Unimodality of Genus Distributions of Wheels
The genus polynomial of a graph is the generating polynomial for the number of nonequivalent embeddings of the graph on each orientable surface. In this paper, we address three questions on genus polynomials for wheel graphs: the computation of genus polynomials, the unimodality and the asymptotic normality of their coefficients. We derive an explicit formula for the genus polynomial of wheel graphs by combining methods of the joint tree model and characters theory, and then prove its real-rootedness. This stronger result implies the log-concavity, unimodality, and asymptotic normality of its coefficients. Thus, we confirm the unimodality conjecture for the genus distribution of wheel graphs and provide a positive answer to the asymptotic normality question posed by Zhang, Peng, and Chen (\emph{Adv. in Appl. Math.} \textbf{127} (2021), 102175).
