Complex generalised weighing matrices in centraliser algebras of monomial representations
An $n \times n$ matrix $W$ with exactly $w$ non-zero entries taken from the set of $k^{\rm th}$ complex roots of unity in each row and column satisfying $WW^{\ast} = wI_n$ is a complex generalised weighing matrix $CGW(n,w;k)$. We study such matrices through the centraliser algebras of monomial representations of finite groups. Using an exhaustive search over the linear characters of Schur covers, we classify, up to monomial equivalence, the complex generalised weighing matrices admitting a primitive group of rank at most five and degree at most $80$ acting by strong automorphisms, for coefficient orders $k \leq 6$, with partial results for larger degrees $100$. The census recovers known infinite families related to projective and affine finite geometries, describes infinite families related to Hamming schemes and settles the existence of some small open cases enumerated in the literature. We construct quantum error-correcting codes from the these matrices and determine their minimum distances exactly in all cases.
Shifted S-templates and improved lower bounds for Schur numbers
We present an extension of the template-based approach for Schur numbers developed by Rowley. This new form of template construction, which we call shifted S-templates, was discovered during a conversation with ChatGPT 5.5 Pro, then refined, verified, and extended to multiple shifted S-templates. These new templates generalize the first ones by giving more flexibility in the coloring. Using this added flexibility with the new way to color the special label cells of the template, we exhibit a template which yields the recurrence $S(k+2) \geq 10S(k)+2$, improving on the classical Abbott-Hanson recurrence $S(k+2) \geq 9S(k)+4$ for the same step. Combined with the known bounds $S(6) \geq 536$ and $S(11) \geq 203\,828$, this implies $S(8) \geq 5\,362$ and $S(13) \geq 2\,038\,282$, improving the previously listed lower bounds $5\,286$ and $2\,011\,290$.
The Action of the Lie Algebra $\mathfrak{sl}_n$ on Colored Graphs and Multicolored Johnson Graphs
We consider the space of $(n-1)$-colored graphs on a fixed set of $N$ vertices. Each edge position of the complete graph $K_N$ has $n$ possible states: the absence of an edge and $n-1$ colors. This gives a natural identification of the space of such graphs with the tensor power $(\mathbb C^n)^{\otimes m}$, where $m=\binom N2$, and defines on it the diagonal action of the Lie algebra $\mathfrak{gl}_n$, and, after restriction, the action of $\mathfrak{sl}_n$. For a fixed profile $α=(α_0,\dots,α_{n-1})$, we consider the graph $J(m;α)$ whose vertices are colored graphs of this profile and whose adjacency is defined by a single exchange of states in two edge positions. This graph is the transposition graph on the set of words with fixed profile, also known as the \emph{multislice}. The main result is an expression of the adjacency operator in terms of the root operators of $\mathfrak{sl}_n$ and a derivation of its spectrum by means of the quadratic Casimir operator of $\mathfrak{gl}_n$ and the Schur--Weyl decomposition. It is proved that the adjacency operator belongs to the center of the algebra $\End_{S_m}(\mathcal C_α)$. The contribution of each spectral block to the multiplicity of the corresponding eigenvalue is described in terms of a Kostka number and the dimension of a Specht module. For $n=2$, one obtains the classical Johnson graph and its known spectrum. As applications, a formula for the valency is established, connectivity is proved, the Hoffman bound for independent sets is obtained, and the three-state case is considered in detail; in this case the natural symmetrized subspace realizes the module $\Sym^m(\mathbb C^3)$.
Contractions and applications of crystal skeletons: Young quasisymmetric and Stanley symmetric functions
The character of a connected $\mathfrak{sl}_n$-crystal is a Schur polynomial; the crystal can be further decomposed into quasicrystals, whose characters are the Gessel quasisymmetric functions. Crystal skeletons are obtained by contracting quasicrystals within crystal graphs. They generalize dual equivalence graphs, and can be used to prove the Schur expansion of a symmetric function when the quasisymmetric expansion is known. In this paper, we show that the crystal skeleton can be tiled further into components which we call quasicrystal skeletons, whose characters are Young quasisymmetric Schur functions. We characterize which edges in the crystal skeleton move between quasicrystal skeleton components. Contracting the quasicrystal skeleton components yields Bruhat order. We illustrate how these tools can be applied to symmetric functions by analyzing the Stanley symmetric functions.
A Proof of Sundaram's Bounded-Interval Higher Lie Positivity Conjecture
For positive integers $n$ and $M$, Sundaram defined $
F_{n,M}=\sum_{\substack{d\mid n\\d\le M}} Lie_{n/d}[p_d] $ and conjectured that every coefficient in its Schur expansion is a nonnegative integer. We prove the conjecture. The power-sum expansion isolates the contribution of the identity class, and the proof divides Young diagrams at the intrinsic majority threshold. If the first row or first column contains more than half of the boxes, the Bernstein creation formula separates each rectangular-cycle character value into a hook constant and a remainder supported only on short cycles. The restrictions of the trivial and sign characters to the cyclic subgroup evaluate the constants exactly, whereas a uniform binomial contraction controls every distance from the boundary at once. If neither a row nor a column has a majority, Swanson's opposite-hook estimate gives a Catalan-scale lower bound for the dimension. The Fomin--Lulov rectangular-character estimate, together with uniform bounds for the truncated Möbius weights, then shows that the identity class dominates. Sundaram's plethystic identity consequently implies that $\prod_{r=1}^M(1-p_r)^{-1}$ is Schur-positive for every fixed $M$. We also record a degree-$12$ counterexample to a separate congruence-class product conjecture attributed to Richard Stanley.
Kleber's conjecture and complementary products of symmetric functions
We prove Kleber's rectangular-complement conjecture for Schur functions over an arbitrary commutative ring $R$, showing that, for a fixed rectangle, the products $s_λs_{λ^\vee}$, indexed by unordered complementary pairs, are linearly independent in $Λ_R$. The proof rests on a general independence theorem for componentwise splittings, which asserts that for every partition $θ$, the products $s_αs_β$ are linearly independent as $\{α,β\}$ ranges over unordered pairs of partitions satisfying $α+β=θ$. The independence of the products $s_λs_{λ^\vee}$ also yields linear independence of the Koike--Terada universal-character products over any field, answering a question of Gao--Orelowitz--Yong. We also prove the analogous result for monomial symmetric functions over fields of characteristic zero, as well as integral linear independence over $\mathbb{Z}$.
Quantum Latin Squares of Order Six with Cardinalities Nineteen, Twenty-One, and Twenty-Three
We give three explicit quantum Latin squares of order $6$ with cardinalities $19$, $21$, and $23$, where vectors differing only by a global phase are counted as identical. The first two examples arise from normalized Schur products of columns of complex Hadamard matrices. For cardinality $19$, a Butson-type matrix over eighth roots of unity has the unique nontrivial coincidence $v_{01}=v_{25}=v_{34}$. For cardinality $21$, an explicit member of Karlsson's three-parameter family has $21$ pairwise inequivalent unordered Schur products. To exceed the symmetric Schur-product bound, we give a third, direct-sum construction based on the decomposition $\C^6=\C^4\oplusC^2$. It uses nineteen distinct rays in the four-dimensional summand and four rays in the two-dimensional summand, arranged so that every row and column is an orthonormal basis, yielding cardinality $23$. Together with our earlier constructions of cardinalities $13$, $15$, and $17$ and previously known order-six examples, these results determine every cardinality in the interval $6\leq c\leq24$, with the sole exception of the impossible value $c=7$.
The Young Tableaux Hopf algebra and multiple Schur series
In this paper, we introduce multiple Schur series, which are defined by Schur-type sums over semi-standard Young tableaux and generalize both Schur multiple zeta values and multiple Eisenstein series. To study their algebraic structure, we construct a connected, commutative, graded Hopf algebra of Young tableaux and identify its linearized quotient with the quasi-shuffle algebra. Within this Hopf algebra and its quotient, we establish several relations, including a hook formula and the Jacobi--Trudi formula. Furthermore, we relate this Hopf algebra to the ring of symmetric functions, which yields polynomial reduction formulas for tableaux with constant entries. As applications, we recover Schur multiple zeta values, introduce Schur multiple Eisenstein series together with a $q$-analogue of Schur multiple zeta values, and discuss their (quasi)modularity.
On Two Algebraic Realizations of Schubert Calculus
Schubert calculus on complex Grassmannians can be played by means of differential operators acting on Schur polynomials or Vertex Operators acting on exterior algebras. In this paper we develop this point of view systematically and complement it with a parallel exterior-algebra formalism, leading to what we call, respectively, the \emph{bosonic} and the \emph{fermionic} Schubert calculus. The two alluded realizations are related by (a finite type version of) the boson--fermion correspondence, thereby providing a unified framework connecting Schubert calculus and integrals on the Grassmannian, symmetric functions, exterior algebras and the representation theory of symmetric groups.
Equality conditions for correlation inequalities
We prove equality conditions for the Ahlswede--Daykin (AD) inequality and the Fortuin--Kasteleyn--Ginibre (FKG) inequality. We then present a number of applications and special cases of these equality conditions. These include Björner's and Fishburn's inequalities for linear extensions of finite posets, the Lam--Postnikov--Pylyavskyy (LPP) and the Okounkov inequalities for Schur positivity of products of Schur functions. We conclude with equality conditions for the Ahlswede--Daykin--Schur (ADS) inequality recently introduced in Chan--Chen--Pak--Soskin (2026), which is an AD type extension of the LPP inequality.
Schur positivity of nabla on Petrie symmetric functions
The Petrie symmetric function $G(k,n)$, introduced by Grinberg, is defined as the sum of monomial symmetric functions $m_λ$ indexed by partitions $λ\vdash n$ satisfying $λ_1<k$. This article demonstrates that the Schur positivity pattern of $\nabla^r G(k,n)$ for all $r\geq 1$ depends exclusively on whether $k$ divides $n$, thus answering an open problem of Bergeron noted in Grinberg's work.
A Shifted $t$-Schur Weight from the Modified Odd Operator
We study the one-time weight on strict partitions obtained from the modified odd Greaves--Jing--Zhu operator. The shifted $t$-Schur functions generated by this operator are obtained from the classical Schur $Q$-functions by the plethystic substitution $X\mapsto X-tX$. Thus the corresponding weight \[
λ\longmapsto \mathcal Q_λ(X;t)P_λ(Y) \] is a shifted Schur weight with a virtual first alphabet. We give its normalization, its Pfaffian correlation kernel, its Fredholm Pfaffian for the largest part, and its size cumulants. For $t=-q$ with $q\geq 0$ the virtual alphabet becomes the positive alphabet $X+qX$, giving a genuine probability measure. This positive specialization is the one-time marginal of the two-color lift considered in a companion note.
The Schur positivity of $\nabla m_μ$
Bergeron, Garsia, Haiman and Tesler conjectured in 1999 that, for all partitions $μ,λ\vdash n$, the polynomial $(-1)^{|μ|-\ell(μ)}\langle \nabla m_μ, s_λ\rangle$ has nonnegative integer coefficients, where $\nabla$ is the Bergeron--Garsia nabla operator, which acts diagonally on the modified Macdonald basis, and $m_μ$ is the monomial symmetric function. In this article, we prove this conjecture, and more generally that $(-1)^{|μ|-\ell(μ)}\langle\nabla^r m_μ,s_λ\rangle\in\mathbb{N}[q,t]$ for all $r\geq 1$. We establish a recursion showing that $(-1)^{|μ|-\ell(μ)}m_μ$ has an expansion with coefficients in $\mathbb{Q}_{\geq 0}[q]$ in the symmetric functions $C_α(1)$, where $C_a$ denotes the operator introduced by Haglund, Morse and Zabrocki. Combining this expansion with the compositional shuffle theorems of Carlsson--Mellit and Mellit, and with the Schur positivity of LLT polynomials, completes the proof. The same method, using the $e$-positivity of column LLT polynomials after the substitution $q\mapsto q+1$, also gives an $e$-positive analogue.
The Graph Algebra I: Representation-Theoretic Structure
The paper studies the graph algebra whose monomial basis is naturally indexed by simple graphs on a fixed set of vertices. This algebra is at the same time the algebra of pseudo-Boolean functions on the Boolean cube and a natural object of algebraic combinatorics, related to the Boolean lattice of subsets of the edge set of the complete graph.
The main aim of the paper is to study two compatible representation-theoretic structures on this algebra: the action of the Lie algebra $\mathfrak{sl}_2$, arising from the operators of adding and deleting one edge, and the action of the pair group $S_n^{(2)}$, induced by the renumbering of vertices. It is proved that the graph algebra with this $\mathfrak{sl}_2$-action is isomorphic to a tensor power of the standard two-dimensional $\mathfrak{sl}_2$-module, and on this basis its decomposition into irreducible $\mathfrak{sl}_2$-modules is obtained. Primitive spaces, that is, the kernels of the edge-deletion operator on rank components, are also described, and it is shown that they have a natural interpretation in terms of two-row Specht modules.
It is then established that the $\mathfrak{sl}_2$-action commutes with the action of the pair group. It follows that the space of graph invariants also inherits the structure of an $\mathfrak{sl}_2$-module. Using Schur--Weyl duality, primitive invariants are described through the fixed parts of the restrictions of two-row Specht modules from the full symmetric group on the edge set to the pair group. As a consequence, the classical enumeration of non-isomorphic graphs by the number of edges receives a representation-theoretic refinement: the orbital components entering the Burnside--Polya formula decompose into natural primitive contributions associated with the $\mathfrak{sl}_2$-structure and two-row Specht modules.
Transition Matrices between Shifted $t$-Schur Bases and Cyclotomic Schur $Q$-Positivity
For a strict partition $λ$, let $\mathcal Q_λ(X;t)=Q_λ[X-tX]$ be the shifted $t$-Schur function arising from the modified Greaves--Jing--Zhu operator on the odd power-sum ring. We study transition matrices between the shifted bases with parameters $t$ and $s$. The relative scaling operator is diagonal in the odd power-sum basis, leading to explicit spectral data, determinant and trace formulas, weighted symmetry, a spin-character formula, and a transition Cauchy identity.
For the cyclotomic specialization $C_{λμ}^{[M]}(t)=C_{λμ}(t^M,t)$, the relative operator becomes plethystic substitution by $1+t+\cdots+t^{M-1}$. We prove Schur $Q$-positivity and reciprocity, derive factorization and root-of-unity rank formulas, and give an exact computation method. For $M=2$, all one-row transitions are computed explicitly, and the nonzero coefficients are unimodal.
Mixed Products of Modified Greaves--Jing--Zhu Operators
Let $\mathcal Y(z;t)$ be the modified Greaves--Jing--Zhu operator on the odd power-sum ring. We first point out that this operator can be obtained from the classical neutral operator by a simple diagonal change of variables. We then study products in which the two deformation parameters are not necessarily the same. For two parameters $t$ and $s$, we compute the scalar factor that appears in the mixed product. This factor has an explicit exponential form and, in a completed setting, can also be written as a quotient of infinite $t$-Pochhammer products. We also give a recurrence for its coefficients, a product formula for several mixed operators, and formulas for the coefficients obtained after applying the operators to $\mathbf 1$.
A particularly simple case occurs when $s=t^M$. In this case the scalar factor becomes the finite quotient $(u;t)_M/(-u;t)_M$. Its coefficients are signed principal specializations of one-row Schur $Q$-functions. As a result, after removing the signs, these coefficients are nonnegative palindromic polynomials. We also give a Gaussian-binomial formula and a finite-order recurrence.
Coordinate projections of $c$-vectors of cluster algebras from the annulus
For an acyclic cluster algebra, the $c$-vectors are, up to sign, the real
Schur roots of the associated root system. We study the two-coordinate
projections $(c_v, c_w)$ of this configuration: when the difference
$c_v - c_w$ is bounded the image lies in a band of lattice lines, and we ask
when the projection fills that band. A band-existence dichotomy, valid in
every acyclic type, shows the difference is bounded if and only if the null
root satisfies $δ_v = δ_w$. For affine type $\widetilde{A}_n$ (the
annulus), in the source-sink orientation, we resolve the filling question
completely: every coordinate projection fills its band except along the
source-sink diagonal, which carries only the finite regular part. The
obstruction is the Auslander--Reiten defect, which a projection sees on its
diagonal exactly when the defect is a coordinate difference; the only such
pair is the source-sink pair of $\widetilde{A}_n$, so the pattern depends on
the chosen seed. More generally, every banded pair of null-root coefficient
one fills, except these diagonals. Off the diagonal a banded pair in
$\widetilde{E}_7$ fails to fill, so non-filling is not confined to type
$\widetilde{A}_n$; a computation classifies the pairs of coefficient at least
two over a range of affine types, where this $\widetilde{E}_7$ pair is the
only further failure, and the general classification remains open.
Sharp bounds for minimal dependencies of linear-form powers
Motivated by the dimension-bound part of a problem of Bukh, we study Veronese circuits: how large can the span of $t$ linear forms be if their $m$-th powers are minimally linearly dependent? We prove the sharp finite dimension bound \[
\dim L\leq \frac{t+m-2}{m}. \] Here $\ell_1,\ldots,\ell_t$ are nonzero homogeneous linear forms over a field of characteristic zero, the powers $\ell_1^m,\ldots,\ell_t^m$ form a circuit, and $L=\Span\{\ell_1,\ldots,\ell_t\}$. Rational-normal-curve configurations attain equality for infinitely many pairs $(t,\dim L)$; in particular, the affine bound itself is sharp and the optimal leading constant in Bukh's question is $1/m$.
The proof uses a coding-theoretic translation: the coefficient row space of the powers is the $m$-th Schur power of the coefficient code, and the minimality hypothesis makes this Schur power a full-support hyperplane to which the Schur-product Kneser theorem of Mirandola and Zémor applies. The same method yields flat-concentration and interpolation criteria, a Cayley--Bacharach lower bound, Segre--Veronese and positive-characteristic variants, and Hilbert-function constraints for equality and near-equality in Veronese circuits.
A Modified Greaves--Jing--Zhu Operator and a Shifted $t$-Gessel Formula
The recent work of Greaves, Jing, and Zhu gives an operator construction for the $t$-Schur functions and the $t$-Schur measure. Motivated by their construction, we consider the same type of vertex operator on the odd power-sum ring. Its Fourier modes generate a family of symmetric functions indexed by strict partitions, which we call shifted $t$-Schur functions. These functions specialize to Schur $Q$-functions at $t=0$. We derive a two-row formula, a Pfaffian Giambelli formula, a Cauchy identity, and a finite shifted Gessel-type formula. This note is intended as a first step toward further study of the odd-operator analogue of the Greaves--Jing--Zhu construction.
Hall-Littlewood functions in noncommuting variables
In 2022 Aliniaeifard, Li, and van Willigenburg defined Schur functions in the algebra of symmetric functions in noncommuting variables (NCSym), answering an open question posed by Rosas and Sagan in 2004. These Schur functions are not monomial positive, since they are defined via a noncommutative analogue of the Jacobi-Trudi determinant.
We introduce Hall-Littlewood functions ${\bf P}_π({\bf x};t)$ indexed by set partitions $π$ in noncommuting variables ${\bf x}=({\bf x}_1,{\bf x}_2,\ldots)$, and define Schur functions in noncommuting variables to be ${\bf s}_π({\bf x})={\bf P}_π({\bf x};0)$. We prove that the set of Hall-Littlewood functions $\{{\bf P}_π({\bf x};t)\}$ for all set partitions $π$ of $[n]$ forms a $\mathbb{Q}[t]$-basis of NCSym of homogeneous degree $n$, and that this basis is invariant under any permutation acting on set partitions. These Hall-Littlewood functions in NCSym map to classical Hall-Littlewood functions under commutation, up to a scalar factor.
We also show that the Hall-Littlewood functions ${\bf P}_π({\bf x};t)$ naturally refine the lifted Hall-Littlewood functions in NCSym. Specifically, the Schur functions ${\bf s}_π({\bf x})$ are monomial positive and refine the lifted Schur function introduced by Rosas and Sagan. Moreover, we introduce a star product of two polynomials in NCSym and develop the star-multiplication rule for a lifted and a non-lifted Hall-Littlewood functions in NCSym. This rule is a noncommutative analogue of the product rule for two Hall-Littlewood functions and, in particular, of the Littlewood-Richardson rule. Finally, our approach extends to the algebra of quasisymmetric functions in noncommuting variables (NCQSym) indexed by set compositions.
