A characterization of idempotent Schur multipliers
We prove that every idempotent Schur multiplier is a finite signed sum of contractive idempotent Schur multipliers. This was conjectured by Katavolos and Paulsen in 2003 and previously known only for translation-invariant Schur multipliers, by the Cohen-Host idempotent theorem. Concretely, we show that any boolean matrix $A$ with Schur multiplier norm at most $γ$ (or equivalently $\lVert A\rVert_{γ_2} \le γ$) can be written as \[ A=\sum_{i=1}^{L}σ_i B_i,\] where $L\leq 2^{Cγ^6}$ for an absolute constant $C$, $σ_i\in\{-1,1\}$ are signs, and each $B_i$ is a contractive idempotent Schur multiplier, that is, a boolean matrix whose $1$-entries form a union of all-one rectangular blocks, with no two blocks sharing a row or a column. As observed by Carenini, a key lemma in our work yields a new proof of the Cohen-Host theorem and gives a simple proof of the quantitative refinements of Green-Sanders and Sanders, with improved bounds. We include a self-contained exposition of these results in the case of finite groups.
Entropy lower bounds and sum-product phenomena
Various lower bounds are established for the entropy of sums, products and their combinations. First, we derive a prime-field analogue of a version of the entropy power inequality established by Tao over torsion-free groups. Next, we prove an entropy sum-product statement: For independent and identically distributed random variables $X,X'$, the maximum of ${\bf H}(X+X')$ and ${\bf H}(XX')$ is bounded below by a linear combination of the entropy and the min-entropy (Rényi entropy of order~$\infty$) of $X$. This result, obtained by bounding entropies of the form ${\bf H}\bigl( X(Y+Z)\bigr)$ from above and below, is valid over arbitrary fields $F$. Over $F={\bf R}$, a slightly stronger inequality is derived. Finally, a weak version of a purely Shannon-entropic sum-product result is developed: If the entropic additive doubling of a random variable $X$ over an arbitrary field is $O(1)$, then its multiplicative doubling is at least proportional to ${\bf H}(X)$.

A note on plane trees with decreasing labels
Published • View Publication • BIB
This note derives asymptotic upper and lower bounds for the number of planted plane trees on $n$ nodes assigned labels from the set $\{1,2,\ldots, k\}$ with the restriction that on any path from the root to a leaf, the labels must strictly decrease. We illustrate an application to calculating the largest eigenvalue of the adjacency matrix of a tree.

On an entropic analogue of additive energy
Published • View Publication • BIB
Recent advances have linked various statements involving sumsets and cardinalities with corresponding statements involving sums of random variables and entropies. In this vein, this paper shows that the quantity $2{\bf H}\{X, Y\} - {\bf H}\{X+Y\}$ is a natural entropic analogue of the additive energy $E(A,B)$ between two sets. We develop some basic theory surrounding this quantity, and demonstrate its role in the proof of Tao's entropy variant of the Balog--Szemerédi--Gowers theorem. We examine the regime where entropic additive energy is small, and discuss a family of random variables related to Sidon sets. In finite fields, one can define an entropic multiplicative energy as well, and we formulate sum-product-type conjectures relating these two entropic energies.

An uncertainty principle for Möbius inversion on posets
Published • View Publication • BIB
We give conditions for a locally finite poset $P$ to have the property that for any functions $f:P\to {\bf C}$ and $g:P\to {\bf C}$ not identically zero and linked by the Möbius inversion formula, the support of at least one of $f$ and $g$ is infinite. This generalises and gives an entirely poset-theoretic proof of a result of Pollack. Various examples and non-examples are discussed.

On the homology of several number-theoretic set families
Published in Enumerative Combinatorics and Applications 4,2 (2024), #S2R12, 11 pp • View Publication • BIB
This paper describes the homology of various simplicial complexes associated to set families from combinatorial number theory, including primitive sets, pairwise coprime sets, product-free sets, and coprime-free sets. We present a condition on a set family that results in easy computation of the homology groups, and show that the first three examples, among many others, admit such a structure. We then extend our techniques to address the complexes associated to coprime-free sets and a generalization of primitive sets.

The lattice of arithmetic progressions
Published in Australasian Journal of Combinatorics 84,3 (2022), 357-374 • Search Publication
This paper concerns the lattice $L_n$ of subsets of $\{1,\ldots,n\}$ that are arithmetic progressions, under the inclusion order. For $n\geq 4$, this poset is not graded and thus not semimodular. We give three independent proofs of the fact that for $n\geq 2$, $μ_n(L_n) = μ(n-1)$, where $μ_n$ is the Möbius function of $L_n$ and $μ$ is the classical (number-theoretic) Möbius function. We also show that $L_n$ is comodernistic, which implies that $L_n$ is EL-labelable. Comodernism is then used to prove that the order complex $Δ_n$ of the lattice is either contractible or homotopy equivalent to a sphere.

Arithmetic subsequences in a random ordering of an additive set
Published in Integers: Electronic Journal of Combinatorial Number Theory 21 (2021), #A89, 19 pp • Search Publication
For a finite set $A$ of size $n$, an ordering is an injection from $\{1,2,\ldots,n\}$ to $A$. We present results concerning the asymptotic properties of the length $L_n$ of the longest arithmetic subsequence in a random ordering of an additive set $A$. In the torsion-free case where $A = [1,n]^d\subseteq {\bf Z}^d$, we prove that $L_n\sim 2d\log n/\log\log n$. We show that the case $A = {\bf Z}/n{\bf Z}$ behaves asymptotically like the torsion-free case with $d=1$, and then use this fact to compute the expected length of the longest arithmetic subsequence in a random ordering of an arbitrary finite abelian group. We also prove that the number of orderings of ${\bf Z}/n{\bf Z}$ without any arithmetic subsequence of length $3$ is $2^{n-1}$ when $n\geq 2$ is a power of $2$, and zero otherwise. We conclude with a concrete application to elementary $p$-groups and a discussion of possible noncommutative generalisations.
