Counterexamples to the Reiner-Shimozono conjecture and the failure of Schubert filtrations
We disprove the Reiner--Shimozono conjecture that products of key polynomials have nonnegative expansions in Demazure atoms. By relaxing the defining relations of Demazure modules, we obtain an exact coefficient-extraction formula that yields an explicit infinite family of counterexamples, including negative coefficients in twenty-eight variables. These examples answer van der Kallen's long-standing open question on relative Schubert filtrations negatively, already for tensor products of two dual Joseph modules. For individual atom coefficients, we give a sufficient criterion for positivity that is checkable in polynomial time in the binary input length, uniformly in rank. For each fixed rank $n\ge4$, this criterion recognizes a nonvanishing proportion of the positive atom coefficients as the bound on the composition entries tends to infinity.
Cauchy identities for skew Ferrers shapes via RSK and keys
Let $μ\subseteqλ\subseteq(m^n)$. We characterize the image under the ordinary Robinson--Schensted--Knuth correspondence of matrices supported on the skew Ferrers diagram $λ/μ$. The outer boundary determines an upper bound on the right key of the insertion tableau, while the inner boundary determines a lower bound on its left key; both bounds depend on the keys of the recording tableau. This yields tableau expansions of skew Ferrers Cauchy kernels using the standard basis polynomials of Lascoux and Schützenberger, indexed by intervals in Bruhat order.
The proof first treats ordinary Ferrers diagrams. Using the supremum characterization of right keys from earlier work, we follow the $λ$-dependent bounds through single RSK insertions. When $λ$ has repeated parts, these weak column bounds need not form a semistandard tableau. Strictification determines a set $\operatorname{Comp}(λ)$ of admissible weak compositions and, for each $α\in\operatorname{Comp}(λ)$, a composition $α^λ$. Ordinary RSK then gives a weight-preserving bijective realization of the expansion \[ \prod_{(i,j)\inλ}\frac{1}{1-x_i y_j} = \sum_{α\in\operatorname{Comp}(λ)} \hat K_α(x)K_{α^λ}(y), \] where $\hat K_α$ and $K_α$ denote Demazure atoms and key polynomials, respectively.
We also give a direct admissibility criterion and a parking procedure for computing $α^λ$. After translating conventions, these agree with the admissibility condition and half-bubble-sort construction of Feigin, Khoroshkin, and Makedonskyi. The staircase and truncated-staircase identities follow as special cases. Finally, we extend the weak-bound construction to an infinite alphabet, where strictification need not exist, and derive the infinite-variable Cauchy identity for the $m$-symmetric Schur functions.
A new characterization of right keys, and the $m$-symmetric Schur functions at $t=0$
The ring $R_m$ of $m$-symmetric functions consists of the formal power series that are symmetric in the variables $x_{m+1},x_{m+2},\dots$ but carry no symmetry in the first $m$ variables. We develop a combinatorial theory for the specialization at $t=0$ of the Schur functions of $R_m$. Our main tool is a new characterization of right key tableaux as suprema of the sets of decreasing subwords of the reading words of the subtableaux of $T$. Being invariant under elementary Knuth transformations, this characterization is compatible with the RSK correspondence. We obtain in this way a generating function over semistandard tableaux for the $m$-symmetric Schur functions at $t=0$, together with a combinatorial proof of a Cauchy identity in $R_m$. The $m$-symmetric Schur functions and their dual are then respectively identified with Demazure atoms and Demazure characters. Restricted to the last $m$ variables, our correspondence specializes to a proof, by ordinary RSK, of Lascoux's nonsymmetric Cauchy identity for Demazure characters and atoms. As further applications, we relate the $m$-symmetric Schur functions at $t=0$ to the almost symmetric Schur functions through a unitriangular change-of-basis matrix, obtain tableau generating functions and Cauchy identities for both families, and derive Jacobi-Trudi type determinantal formulas for three different bases.
Positive expansions of permuted basement and quasisymmetric Macdonald polynomials at $t=0$
It is well known that the $q$-Whittaker polynomials, which are $t=0$ specializations of the Macdonald polynomials $P_λ(X;q,t)$, expand positively as the sum of Schur polynomials. Macdonald polynomials have a quasisymmetric refinement: the quasisymmetric Macdonald polynomials $G_γ(X;q,t)$, and a nonsymmetric refinement: the ASEP polynomials $f_α(X;q,t)$. We study the $t=0$ specializations of both these families of polynomials and show analogous properties: the quasisymmetric Macdonald polynomials expand positively as a sum of quasisymmetric Schur functions, $\text{QS}_γ(X)$, and the ASEP polynomials expand positively as a sum of Demazure atoms, $\mathcal{A}_α(X)$. As a corollary of the latter, we prove more generally that any permuted basement Macdonald polynomial has a positive expansion in the Demazure atoms at $t=0$. We give a description of the structure coefficients of $G_γ(X;q,0)$ and $f_α(X;q,0)$ in both cases in terms of the charge statistic on a restricted set of semistandard tableaux.
A Local Characterization of Unions of Demazure Crystals
We characterize subsets of highest weight $\mathfrak{g}$-crystals that arise as unions of Demazure crystals, for any symmetrizable Kac-Moody Lie algebra $\mathfrak{g}$. We provide a local characterization for these subsets and prove they admit disjoint decompositions into Demazure atoms. As a consequence, we give a new characterization for when a subset of a highest weight crystal is a Demazure crystal as well as a crystal-theoretic proof that any Polo module admits a relative Schubert filtration.
$K$-analogues of Hivert's divided difference operators
Several families of polynomials of combinatorial and representation theoretic interest (notably the Schur polynomials $s_λ$, Demazure characters $\mathfrak{D}_a$, and Demazure atoms $\mathfrak{A}_a$) can be defined in terms of divided difference operators. Hivert (2000) defines "fundamental analogues" of these divided difference operators, and Hivert and Hicks-Niese show in arXiv:2406.02420 that the polynomials that arise from those fundamental operators in analogous ways to the three families of polynomials above are respectively the fundamental quasisymmetric functions $F_a$ from (1984), the fundamental slides $\mathfrak{F}_a$ of Assaf and Searles from arXiv:1603.09744, and the fundamental particles $\mathfrak{P}_a$ of Searles from arXiv:1707.01172. Lascoux (2001) defines $K$-analogues of the divided difference operators, and in arXiv:1908.07364, Buciumas, Scrimshaw, and Weber show that the polynomials arising in corresponding ways from the $K$-theoretic divided difference operators are respectively the Grothendieck polynomials $\overline{s}_λ$, the combinatorial Lascoux polynomials $\overline{\mathfrak{D}}_a$ from arXiv:1611.08777, and the combinatorial Lascoux atoms $\overline{\mathfrak{A}}_a$ from arXiv:1611.08777, as conjectured by Monical in arXiv:1611.08777. We define $K$-analogues of Hivert's fundamental divided difference operators and show that the polynomials arising in the corresponding ways from our new operators are respectively the multifundamentals $\overline{F}_a$ of Lam and Pylyavskyy from arXiv:0705.2189, the fundamental glides $\overline{\mathfrak{F}}_a$ from of Pechenik and Searles from arXiv:1611.02545, and the kaons $\overline{\mathfrak{P}}_a$ of Monical, Pechenik, and Searles from arXiv:1806.03802.
Flagged LLT polynomials, nonsymmetric plethysm, and nonsymmetric Macdonald polynomials
The plethystic transformation $f[X] \mapsto f[X/(1-t)]$ and LLT polynomials are central to the theory of symmetric Macdonald polynomials. In this work, we introduce and study nonsymmetric flagged LLT polynomials. We show that these admit both an algebraic and a combinatorial description, that they Weyl symmetrize to the usual symmetric LLT polynomials, and we conjecture that they expand positively in terms of Demazure atoms. Additionally, we construct a nonsymmetric plethysm operator $Π_{t,x}$ on $\mathfrak{K}[x_1,\ldots,x_n]$, which serves as an analogue of $f[X] \mapsto f[X/(1-t)]$. We prove that $Π_{t,x}$ remarkably maps flagged LLT polynomials defined over a signed alphabet to ones over an unsigned alphabet.
Our main application of this theory is to formulate a nonsymmetric version of Macdonald positivity, similar in spirit to conjectures of Knop and Lapointe, but with several new features. To do this, we recast the Haglund-Haiman-Loehr formula for nonsymmetric Macdonald polynomials $\mathcal{E}_{μ}(x;q,t)$ as a positive sum of signed flagged LLT polynomials. Then, after applying a suitable stable limit of $Π_{t,x}$ to a stable version of $\mathcal{E}_{μ}(x;q,t)$, we obtain modified nonsymmetric Macdonald polynomials which are positive sums of flagged LLT polynomials and thus are conjecturally atom positive, strengthening the Macdonald positivity conjecture.
The Schützenberger involution and colored lattice models
Colored lattice models can be used to describe many different types of special functions of interest in both algebraic combinatorics and representation theory, for example Schur polynomials, nonsymmetric Macdonald polynomials, and characters and Whittaker functions for representations of p-adic groups. A notable example is the metaplectic ice model of which there are actually two different variants: a Gamma and a Delta variant. These variants differ in key aspects but surprisingly produce equal partition functions, which are weighted sums over admissible configurations, and this equality is called the Gamma-Delta duality. The duality was used to prove the analytic continuation of certain multiple Dirichlet series and is highly non-trivial, especially since the number of configurations on each side of the equality can differ.
In this paper we construct a new family of solvable, colored lattice models and prove that they are dual to existing lattice models in the literature, including the above metaplectic case and the lattice model for (non-metaplectic) Iwahori Whittaker functions together with its crystal limit for Demazure atoms for Cartan type A. The equality of partition functions is shown using Yang-Baxter equations involving R-matrices mixing lattice model rows of types Gamma and Delta.
For the crystal Demazure lattice model we show that the duality refines to a weight-respecting bijection of states given by the Schützenberger involution on the associated Gelfand-Tsetlin patterns or semistandard Young tableaux. We also show how the individual steps exchanging two rows in the proof of the duality for the partition functions refines to Berenstein-Kirillov, or Bender-Knuth involutions.
Vertex models for the product of a permuted-basement Demazure atom and a Schur polynomial
We present the first positive combinatorial rule for expanding the product of a permuted-basement Demazure atom and a Schur polynomial. Special cases of permuted-basement Demazure atoms include Demazure atoms and characters. These cases have known tableau formulas for their expansions when multiplied by a Schur polynomial, due to Haglund, Luoto, Mason and van Willigenburg. We find a vertex model formula, giving a new rule even in these special cases, extending a technique introduced by Zinn-Justin for calculating Littlewood-Richardson coefficients.
We derive a coloured vertex model for permuted-basement Demazure atoms, inspired by Borodin and Wheeler's model for non-symmetric Macdonald polynomials. We make this model compatible with an uncoloured vertex model for Schur polynomials, putting them in a single framework. Unlike previous work on structure coefficients via vertex models, a remarkable feature of our construction is that it relies on a Yang-Baxter equation that only holds for certain boundary conditions. However, this restricted Yang-Baxter equation is sufficient to show our result.
Cauchy identities for staircase matrices

The celebrated Cauchy identity expresses the product of terms $(1 - x_i y_j)^{-1}$ for $(i,j)$ indexing entries of a rectangular $m\times n$-matrix as a sum over partitions $λ$ of products of Schur polynomials: $s_λ(x)s_λ(y)$. Algebraically, this identity comes from the decomposition of the symmetric algebra of the space of rectangular matrices, considered as a $\mathfrak{gl}_m$-$\mathfrak{gl}_n$-bi-module. We generalize the Cauchy decomposition by replacing rectangular matrices with arbitrary staircase-shaped matrices equipped with the left and right actions of the Borel upper-triangular subalgebras. For any given staircase shape $\mathsf{Y}$ we describe left and right "standard" filtrations on the symmetric algebra of the space of shape $\mathsf{Y}$ matrices. We show that the subquotients of these filtrations are tensor products of Demazure and opposite van der Kallen modules over the Borel subalgebras. On the level of characters, we derive three distinct expansions for the product $(1 - x_i y_j)^{-1}$ for $(i,j) \in \mathsf{Y}$. The first two expansions are sums of products of key polynomials $κ_λ(x)$ and (opposite) Demazure atoms $a^μ(y)$. The third expansion is an alternating sum of products of key polynomials $κ_λ(x)\,κ^μ(y)$.

As part of a program to develop $K$-theoretic analogues of combinatorially important polynomials, Monical, Pechenik, and Searles (2021) proved two expansion formulas $\overline{\mathfrak{A}}_a = \sum_b Q_b^a(β)\overline{\mathfrak{P}}_b$ and $\overline{\mathfrak{Q}}_a = \sum_b M_b^a(β)\overline{\mathfrak{F}}_b,$ where each of $\overline{\mathfrak{A}}_a$, $\overline{\mathfrak{P}}_a$, $\overline{\mathfrak{Q}}_a$ and $\overline{\mathfrak{F}}_a$ is a family of polynomials that forms a basis for $\mathbb{Z}[x_1,\dots,x_n][β]$ indexed by weak compositions $a,$ and $Q_b^a(β)$ and $M_b^a(β)$ are monomials in $β$ for each pair $(a,b)$ of weak compositions. The polynomials $\overline{\mathfrak{A}}_a$ are the Lascoux atoms, $\overline{\mathfrak{P}}_a$ are the kaons, $\overline{\mathfrak{Q}}_a$ are the quasiLascoux polynomials, and $\overline{\mathfrak{F}}_a$ are the glide polynomials; these are respectively the $K$-analogues of the Demazure atoms $\mathfrak{A}_a$, the fundamental particles $\mathfrak{P}_a$, the quasikey polynomials $\mathfrak{Q}_a$, and the fundamental slide polynomials $\mathfrak{F}_a$. Monical, Pechenik, and Searles conjectured that for any fixed $a,$ $\sum_b Q_b^a(-1), \sum_b M_b^a(-1) \in \{0,1\},$ where $b$ ranges over all weak compositions. We prove this conjecture using a sign-reversing involution.
Quasisymmetric divided difference operators and polynomial bases
The key polynomials, the Demazure atoms, the Schubert polynomials, and even the Schur functions can be defined using divided difference operator. In 2000, Hivert introduced a quasisymmetric analog of the divided difference operator. In particular, replacing it in a natural way in the definition of the Schur functions gives Gessel's fundamental basis. This paper is our attempt to apply the same methods to define the remaining bases and study the results. In particular, we show both the key polynomials and Demazure atoms have natural analogs using Hivert's operator and that the resulting bases occur independently and defined by other means in the work of Assaf and Searles, as the fundemental slide polynomials and the fundamental particle basis respectively. We further explore properties of these two bases, including giving the structure constants for the fundamental particle basis.
Extremal subsets and atom-positivity
Demazure crystals give a combinatorial framework in which to study Demazure modules. They are extremal, in that they satisfy Kashiwara's string property, and they are Demazure atom-positive, in that they decompose naturally into subsets called crystal Demazure atoms. The properties of extremality and atom-positivity are further linked by a conjecture of Polo, which concerns the structure of the tensor product of two Demazure modules. We study these two properties in isolation - first providing a recursive formula for generating crystal Demazure atoms which generalizes a result of Lascoux-Schützenberger, and then examining the structure of extremal subsets and their characters - before commenting on the connection (or lack thereof) between them.

We construct colored lattice models whose partition functions represent symplectic and odd orthogonal Demazure characters and atoms. We show that our lattice models are not solvable, but we are able to show the existence of sufficiently many solutions of the Yang--Baxter equation that allows us to compute functional equations for the corresponding partition functions. From these functional equations, we determine that the partition function of our models are the Demazure atoms and characters for the symplectic and odd orthogonal Lie groups. We coin our lattice models as quasi-solvable. We use the natural bijection of admissible states in our models with Proctor patterns to give a right key algorithm for reverse King tableaux and Sundaram tableaux.

We introduce two lifts of the dual immaculate quasisymmetric functions to the polynomial ring. We establish positive formulas for expansions of these dual immaculate slide polynomials into the fundamental slide and quasi-key bases for polynomials. These formulas mirror connections between dual immaculate quasisymmetric functions, fundamental quasisymmetric functions, and Young quasisymmetric Schur functions, extending these connections from the ring of quasisymmetric functions to the full polynomial ring. We also consider a reverse variant of the dual immaculate quasisymmetric functions, mirroring the dichotomy between the quasisymmetric Schur functions and the Young quasisymmetric Schur functions. We show this variant is obtained by taking stable limits of one of our lifts, and utilize these reverse dual immaculate quasisymmetric functions to establish a connection between the dual immaculate quasisymmetric functions and the Demazure atom basis for polynomials.
Symplectic keys and Demazure atoms in type C
We compute, mimicking the Lascoux-Schützenberger type A combinatorial procedure, left and right keys for a Kashiwara-Nakashima tableau in type C. These symplectic keys have a similar role as the keys for semistandard Young tableaux. More precisely, our symplectic keys give a tableau criterion for the Bruhat order on the hyperoctahedral group and cosets, and describe Demazure atoms and characters in type C. The right and the left symplectic keys are related through the Lusztig involution. A type C Schützenberger evacuation is defined to realize that involution.

Colored five-vertex models and Demazure atoms
Type A Demazure atoms are pieces of Schur functions, or sets of tableaux whose weights sum to such functions. Inspired by colored vertex models of Borodin and Wheeler, we will construct solvable lattice models whose partition functions are Demazure atoms; the proof of this makes use of a Yang-Baxter equation for a colored five-vertex model. As a biproduct, we construct Demazure atoms on Kashiwara's $\mathcal{B}_\infty$ crystal and give new algorithms for computing Lascoux-Schützenberger keys.

We establish a poset structure on combinatorial bases of multivariate polynomials defined by positive expansions, and study properties common to bases in this poset. Included are the well-studied bases of Schubert polynomials, Demazure characters and Demazure atoms; the quasi-key, fundamental and monomial slide bases introduced in 2017 by Assaf and the author; and a new basis we introduce completing this poset structure. We show the product of a Schur polynomial and an element of a basis in this poset expands positively in that basis; in particular, we give the first Littlewood-Richardson rule for the product of a Schur polynomial and a quasi-key polynomial. This rule simultaneously extends Haglund, Luoto, Mason and van Willigenburg's (2011) Littlewood-Richardson rule for quasi-Schur polynomials and refines their Littlewood-Richardson rule for Demazure characters. We also establish bijections connecting combinatorial models for these polynomials including semi-skyline fillings and quasi-key tableaux.

A polynomial has saturated Newton polytope (SNP) if every lattice point of the convex hull of its exponent vectors corresponds to a monomial. We compile instances of SNP in algebraic combinatorics (some with proofs, others conjecturally): skew Schur polynomials; symmetric polynomials associated to reduced words, Redfield--Polya theory, Witt vectors, and totally nonnegative matrices; resultants; discriminants (up to quartics); Macdonald polynomials; key polynomials; Demazure atoms; Schubert polynomials; and Grothendieck polynomials, among others.
Our principal construction is the Schubitope. For any subset of [n] x [n], we describe it by linear inequalities. This generalized permutahedron conjecturally has positive Ehrhart polynomial. We conjecture it describes the Newton polytope of Schubert and key polynomials. We also define dominance order on permutations and study its poset-theoretic properties.
