Reversing the Mostar line-graph inequality with long pendant paths
Let $K_t$ be obtained by attaching a pendant path of length $t$ to a fixed rooted graph $K$. We prove that $\mathrm{Mo}(L(K_t))-\mathrm{Mo}(K_t)$, the difference between its line-graph and original Mostar indices, is exactly affine on each parity class beyond a sharp uniform cutoff. The slope depends on distance-level neighbor counts and is positive for every non-bipartite core. Triangle chains give infinitely many graphs with $\mathrm{Mo}(L(G))>\mathrm{Mo}(G)$ at every positive cyclomatic number $c$, with maximum degree three, resolving Alex-Indulal Problem 3.3. At zero slope, a cactus branch-mass formula decides equality; identical vertex profiles need not give identical intercepts. Fixed cores giving equality for all sufficiently long attachments exist exactly when $c$ is odd. Maximum degree three suffices, and at every even $c$ a binary-tree construction gives equality on one eventual parity class.
Maximizing the signless Laplacian spectral radius of simplicial 2-complexes with a prescribed second Betti number
We study how a prescribed second Betti number constrains the largest eigenvalue of the signless Laplacian on edges of a pure two-dimensional simplicial complex. For each fixed positive second Betti number, we determine all maximizing complexes provided that the number of vertices is sufficiently large. Every maximizer consists of a full cone over a complete graph together with a family of triangles avoiding the apex, any two of which share an edge; the number of added triangles equals the prescribed Betti number. The maximizer is unique up to isomorphism except when this number is three or four, for which we describe all additional extremal complexes. The proof uses homological constraints and Perron vector estimates to establish the full cone structure, followed by an exact Schur complement comparison to classify the added triangles. We also obtain an asymptotic expansion of the maximum spectral radius and extend the extremal result to Betti numbers growing more slowly than the fourth root of the number of vertices. These results provide a two-dimensional counterpart of spectral extremal theorems for connected graphs with a prescribed cyclomatic number.
Multiplicity bounds for nonzero upper-Laplacian eigenvalues of simplicial complexes
Let $K$ be a finite pure ridge-connected $d$-dimensional simplicial complex with at least two facets, and let $m_K(λ)$ denote the multiplicity of a positive eigenvalue $λ$ of its upper Laplacian $L_{d-1}^{\mathrm{up}}(K)$. We obtain upper bounds for $m_K(λ)$ in terms of the basic combinatorial parameters $f_d(K)$ and $f_{d-1}(K)$, the numbers of facets and ridges, $p_d(K)$, the number of pendant facets, and $q_d(K)$, the number of quasi-pendant ridges. The quantity $θ_d(K)=d f_d(K)-f_{d-1}(K)+1$ arises as the cyclomatic number of a natural reduced facet--ridge incidence graph. We prove \[ m_K(λ)\le 2θ_d(K)+p_d(K), \qquad m_K(λ)\le 2θ_d(K)+q_d(K)\quad(λ\ne d). \] We also characterize the complexes for which equality is attained in these bounds. Finally, for every finite pure $d$-dimensional simplicial complex, we prove the sharp inequality $m_K(d)\ge p_d(K)-q_d(K)$, which is a higher-dimensional analogue of Faria's inequality. For $d=1$, our results reduce to the corresponding multiplicity bounds for graph Laplacians.
Graphs attaining an upper bound on the mixed metric dimension
Given a graph $G$, we show that the mixed metric dimension of $G$ is exactly $\ell(G)+2c(G)$ if and only if $G$ is either a cactus graph in which every cycle has precisely one vertex of degree at least $3$, or a balanced $Θ$-graph, where $\ell(G)$ and $c(G)$ denote the number of leaves and the cyclomatic number of $G$, respectively. This provides an affirmative answer to a conjecture proposed by Sedlar and Škrekovski (2021).
Diameter and Length of Metric Graphs
A metric graph is a metric space obtained from a finite collection of intervals whose endpoints are identified in groups. It can also be seen as a finite, edge-weighted graph where the continuum of points along the interior of each edge is taken into consideration, and each edge is locally isometric to an interval whose length is the edge-weight. The diameter of a metric graph $G$ is the maximum distance between all pairs of points of $G$. We show that the total length of a metric graph $G$ with $\ell(G)$ leaves, cyclomatic number $cyc(G)$, and diameter $diam(G)$ is at most $(cyc(G) + max\{1, \ell(G)/2\}) \cdot diam(G)$. Furthermore, we show that his bound is tight, and we characterize the metric graphs where equality holds. As an application, we provide tight bounds in certain cases for the diameter of metric graphs obtained from a cycle or a star by the identification of a fixed number of points (pairwise or in groups).
Mixed metric dimension of $2$-connected graphs
We show that for a $2$-connected graph $G$ which is not a cycle, the mixed metric dimension of $G$ is at most $2c(G)$, where $c(G)$ is cyclomatic number of $G$. As an immediate application, we prove a conjecture proposed by Sedlar and Škrekovski.
Graphs with zero as a main eigenvalue of the signless Laplacian
An eigenvalue of the signless Laplacian $Q(G)$ is $Q$-main if its eigenspace is not orthogonal to the all-ones vector. We characterize graphs with exactly $\ell\ge3$ $Q$-main eigenvalues, one of which is zero. The case $\ell=3$ reduces to non-semiregular bipartite graphs satisfying a vertexwise signed degree-sum identity. For each integer $k\ge0$, we construct infinitely many pairwise nonisomorphic graphs of cyclomatic number $k$ and unbounded diameter, all with exactly three $Q$-main eigenvalues including zero. These families provide counterexamples to the stated classifications of trees, unicyclic graphs, and bicyclic graphs of Javarsineh and Fath-Tabar.
Cyclomatic numbers and permutations
We show that the inversion graph of a permutation governs several apparently different aspects of the permutation: the gap between its Coxeter and reflection lengths, the number of repeated letters in its reduced words, and its cycle structure, and it also bounds the number of $321$ and $3412$ patterns. The mechanism is that a reduced word orders the edges of the inversion graph, with the edges from first-occurrence letters forming a spanning forest and the edges from repeated letters accounting for the rest. The case where the inversion graph is a forest unifies several classical characterizations of these permutations, due to Edelman, Tenner, and Petersen and Tenner. We also give a new proof that every connected acyclic inversion graph is a caterpillar.
Extremal Mostar Index of Graphs with Given Number of Cut Edges
The Mostar index of a connected graph \(G\) is defined as \[ Mo(G)=\sum_{uv\in E(G)}\bigl|n_u(uv)-n_v(uv)\bigr|, \] where for an edge \(e=uv\), \(n_u(e)\) denotes the number of vertices of \(G\) that are closer to \(u\) than to \(v\). In this paper, we determine the maximum possible Mostar index among all connected graphs of order \(n\) with exactly \(k\) cut edges, where \(1\le k\le n-1\). We prove that the maximum value is given by \(k(n-2)+(n-k-1)k\), and the unique extremal graph is \(K_{n-k}^k\) (a complete graph on \(n-k\) vertices with \(k\) pendant edges attached to a single vertex). We also establish a sharp lower bound and characterise the extremal graphs for the minimum value. Furthermore, we extend the results to graphs with a given cyclomatic number and a given number of cut edges. Our findings complete the extremal characterisation of the Mostar index for this fundamental graph class.

For a graph $G$ with edge set $E$, let $d(u)$ denote the degree of a vertex $u$ in $G$. The diminished Sombor (DSO) index of $G$ is defined as $DSO(G)=\sum_{uv\in E}\sqrt{(d(u))^2+(d(v))^2}(d(u)+d(v))^{-1}$. The cyclomatic number of a graph is the smallest number of edges whose removal makes the graph acyclic. A connected graph of maximum degree at most $4$ is known as a molecular graph. The primary motivation of the present study comes from a conjecture concerning the minimum DSO index of fixed-order connected graphs with cyclomatic number $3$, posed in the recent paper [F. Movahedi, I. Gutman, I. Redžepović, B. Furtula, Diminished Sombor index, MATCH Commun. Comput. Chem. 95 (2026) 141--162]. The present paper gives all graphs minimizing the DSO index among all molecular graphs of order $n$ with cyclomatic number $\ell$, provided that $n\ge 2(\ell-1)\ge4$.
Distance-based (and path-based) covering problems for graphs of given cyclomatic number

We study a large family of graph covering problems, whose definitions rely on distances, for graphs of bounded cyclomatic number (that is, the minimum number of edges that need to be removed from the graph to destroy all cycles). These problems include (but are not restricted to) three families of problems: (i) variants of metric dimension, where one wants to choose a small set $S$ of vertices of the graph such that every vertex is uniquely determined by its ordered vector of distances to the vertices of $S$; (ii) variants of geodetic sets, where one wants to select a small set $S$ of vertices such that any vertex lies on some shortest path between two vertices of $S$; (iii) variants of path covers, where one wants to select a small set of paths such that every vertex or edge belongs to one of the paths. We generalize and/or improve previous results in the area which show that the optimal values for these problems can be upper-bounded by a linear function of the cyclomatic number and the degree~1-vertices of the graph. To this end, we develop and enhance a technique recently introduced in [C. Lu, Q. Ye, C. Zhu. Algorithmic aspect on the minimum (weighted) doubly resolving set problem of graphs, Journal of Combinatorial Optimization 44:2029--2039, 2022] and give near-optimal bounds in several cases. This solves (in some cases fully, in some cases partially) some conjectures and open questions from the literature. The method, based on breadth-first search, is of algorithmic nature and thus, all the constructions can be computed in linear time. Our results also imply an algorithmic consequence for the computation of the optimal solutions: for some of the problems, they can be computed in polynomial time for graphs of bounded cyclomatic number.
Equiangular lines via nodal domains
For given $Δ>0$ and $0<λ<3/\sqrt{2}$, we show that the maximum multiplicity that $λ$ can appear as the second largest eigenvalue of a connected graph with maximum degree at most $Δ$ is $O_{Δ,λ}(1)$. This result answers a question due to Jiang, Tidor, Yao, Zhang and Zhao [Question 6.4, Ann. of Math. (2) 194 (2021), no. 3, 729-743] in the case of $0<λ<3/\sqrt{2}$, and consequently leads to improvements in their results on equiangular lines. Our proof is based on the concept of nodal domains of eigenfunctions. Indeed, we establish a multiplicity estimate in terms of maximum degree and cyclomatic number of the graph, via a novel construction of eigenfunctions with large number of nodal domains.

To investigate hyperbinary expansions of a nonnegative integer~$n$, an edge-labeled directed graph $A(n)$ has recently been introduced. After pointing out some new simple facts about its cyclomatic number, we give a relatively simple description of its structure and prove that if $m,n$ are even numbers for which $A(n)$ and $A(m)$ are isomorphic as edge-labeled graphs, then $m=n$. From the structure of $A(n)$ we also derive a formula related to Stern's diatomic sequence, and in the same vein discuss some algorithms that recently appeared in the literature.
Spectral bounds of multi-way Cheeger constants via cyclomatic number
As a non-trivial extension of the celebrated Cheeger inequality, the higher-order Cheeger inequalities for graphs due to Lee, Oveis Gharan and Trevisan provide for each $k$ an upper bound for the $k$-way Cheeger constant in forms of $C(k)\sqrt{λ_k(G)}$, where $λ_k(G)$ is the $k$-th eigenvalue of the graph Laplacian and $C(k)$ is a constant depending only on $k$. In this article, we prove some new bounds for multi-way Cheeger constants. By shifting the index of the eigenvalue via cyclomatic number, we establish upper bound estimates with an absolute constant instead of $C(k)$. This, in particular, gives a more direct proof of Miclo's higher order Cheeger inequalities on trees. We also show a new lower bound of the multi-way Cheeger constants in terms of the spectral radius of the graph. The proofs involve the concept of discrete nodal domains and a probability argument showing generic properties of eigenfunctions.
A relation between multiplicity of nonzero eigenvalues and the matching number of graph

Let $G$ be a graph with an adjacent matrix $A(G)$. The multiplicity of an arbitrary eigenvalue $λ$ of $A(G)$ is denoted by $m_λ(G)$. In \cite{Wong}, the author apply the Pater-Wiener Theorem to prove that if the diameter of $T$ at least $4$, then $m_λ(T)\leq β'(T)-1$ for any $λ\neq0$. Moreover, they characterized all trees with $m_λ(T)=β'(T)-1$, where $β'(G)$ is the induced matching number of $G$.
In this paper, we intend to extend this result from trees to any connected graph. Contrary to the technique used in \cite{Wong}, we prove the following result mainly by employing algebraic methods: For any non-zero eigenvalue $λ$ of the connected graph $G$, $m_λ(G)\leq β'(G)+c(G)$, where $c(G)$ is the cyclomatic number of $G$, and the equality holds if and only if $G\cong C_3(a,a,a)$ or $G\cong C_5$, or a tree with the diameter is at most $3$. Furthermore, if $β'(G)\geq3$, we characterize all connected graphs with $m_λ(G)=β'(G)+c(G)-1$.

Let $Γ= (G, σ)$ be a signed graph, where $G = (V(G),E(G))$ is an (unsigned) graph, called the underlying graph. The net Laplacian matrix of $Γ$ is defined as $L^{\pm}(Γ) = D^{\pm}(Γ) - A(Γ)$, where $D^{\pm}(Γ)$ and $A(Γ)$ are the diagonal matrix of net-degrees and the adjacency matrix of $Γ$, respectively.
The nullity of $L^{\pm}(Γ)$, written as $ η(L^{\pm} (Γ))$, is the multiplicity of 0 as an eigenvalue of $L^{\pm}(Γ)$. In this paper, we focus our attention on the nullity of the net Laplacian matrix of a connected signed graph $Γ$ and prove that $1 \leq η(L^{\pm} (Γ)) \leq min\{ β(Γ) + 1, |V(Γ)| - 1 \}$, where $β(Γ) = |E(Γ)| - |V(Γ)| + 1$ is the cyclomatic number of $Γ$. The connected signed graphs with nullity $|V(Γ)| - 1$ are completely determined. Moreover, we characterize the signed cactus graphs with nullity $1$ or $β(Γ) + 1$
The multiplicity of a Hermitian eigenvalue on graphs
For a graph $G$, let $\mathcal{S}(G)$ be the set consisting of Hermitian matrices whose graph is $G$. Denoted by $m_B(G,λ)$ the multiplicity of an eigenvalue $λ$ of $B(G)\in \mathcal{S}(G)$, we show that $m_B(G,λ)\le 2θ(G)+p(G)$ where $θ(G)$ and $p(G)$ are the cyclomatic number and the number of pendent vertices of $G$ respectively, and characterize the graphs attaining the equality. This is a generalization of a result on adjacency matrix by Wang et al.\cite{Wang1}. Moreover, they arose an open problem in \cite{Wang1}: \textit{characterize all graphs with $m_A(G,λ)=2θ(G)+p(G)-1$ for any eigenvalue $λ$ of its adjacency matrix.}
In this paper, we completely characterize the graphs with $m_B(G,λ)=2θ(G)+p(G)-1$ for any eigenvalue $λ$ of an arbitrary Hermitian matrix $B(G)\in \mathcal{S}(G)$. This result provides a stronger answer to the above problem, and encompasses some previous known works considering $λ=-1$ or $0$ on the problem.

A mixed graph $\widetilde{G}$ is obtained from a simple undirected graph $G$, the underlying graph of $\widetilde{G}$, by orienting some edges of $G$. Let $c(G)=|E(G)|-|V(G)|+ω(G)$ be the cyclomatic number of $G$ with $ω(G)$ the number of connected components of $G$, $m(G)$ be the matching number of $G$, and $η(\widetilde{G})$ be the nullity of $\widetilde{G}$. Chen et al. (2018)\cite{LSC} and Tian et al. (2018)\cite{TFL} proved independently that $|V(G)|-2m(G)-2c(G) \leq η(\widetilde{G}) \leq |V(G)|-2m(G)+2c(G)$, respectively, and they characterized the mixed graphs with nullity attaining the upper bound and the lower bound. In this paper, we prove that there is no mixed graph with nullity $η(\widetilde{G})=|V(G)|-2m(G)+2c(G)-1$. Moreover, for fixed $c(G)$, there are infinitely many connected mixed graphs with nullity $|V(G)|-2m(G)+2c(G)-s$ $( 0 \leq s \leq 3c(G), s\neq1 )$ is proved.
An upper bound on the nullity of signed graphs
In this paper, an upper bound on the nullity of signed graphs in terms of the cyclomatic number and the number of pendant vertices is proved, and the corresponding extremal signed graphs are completely characterized.

The vertex (resp. edge) metric dimension of a graph G is the size of a smallest vertex set in G which distinguishes all pairs of vertices (resp. edges) in G and it is denoted by dim(G) (resp. edim(G)). The upper bounds dim(G) <= 2c(G) - 1 and edim(G) <= 2c(G)-1; where c(G) denotes the cyclomatic number of G, were established to hold for cacti without leaves distinct from cycles, and moreover all leafless cacti which attain the bounds were characterized. It was further conjectured that the same bounds hold for general connected graphs without leaves and this conjecture was supported by showing that the problem reduces to 2-connected graphs. In this paper we focus on Theta graphs, as the most simple 2-connected graphs distinct from cycle, and show that the the upper bound 2c(G) - 1 holds for both metric dimensions of Theta graphs and we characterize all Theta graphs for which the bound is attained. We conclude by conjecturing that there are no other extremal graphs for the bound 2c(G) - 1 in the class of leafless graphs besides already known extremal cacti and extremal Theta graphs mentioned here.
