Stellahedral geometry of partially ordered sets
We introduce a transformation on partially ordered sets, termed the \emph{stellahedral transform}, with notable features. It preserves the properties of being Eulerian, Cohen--Macaulay, and of being the face poset of a polytope. Furthermore, it admits an explicit geometric realization for convex polytopes and specializes to the construction that takes a simplex to the stellahedron. One motivation for this definition comes from the theory of toric $h$-polynomials and (augmented) Chow polynomials of Eulerian posets. We show that the right augmented Chow polynomial of an Eulerian poset $P$ agrees with the toric $h$-polynomial of the stellahedral transform of $P$. We use this perspective, together with $\mathbf{cd}$-index results due to Ehrenborg (2005) and Karu (2006), to prove two positivity results for augmented Chow polynomials: for Gorenstein* posets they are unimodal, and for face posets of polytopes they are $γ$-positive.
Along the way we provide negative answers to two open questions concerning Eulerian and Gorenstein* posets. First, the question on the nonnegativity of Eulerian Chow polynomials, posed by Ferroni, Matherne, and Vecchi (2024). Second, the question posed by Athanasiadis and Kalampogia-Evangelinou (2023) on the real-rootedness of chain and Chow polynomials of Gorenstein* posets: these examples provide a novel application of a technique introduced by Murai and Nevo (2014).
Real-rootedness and interlacing for parking functions and Chow polynomials
We prove real-rootedness for the Chow polynomials of the noncrossing partition lattices by transferring tieless parking functions to finite-alphabet Smirnov words and applying an interlacing-preserving transition of M.~Leander. We also derive a triangular recurrence for peaks and ties and identify the peakless-tieless descent polynomial as the Narayana polynomial. For the toric $g$-contributions of Ehrenborg--Hetyei--Readdy, we exhibit a fixed-row common interlacer and establish real-rootedness of all nonnegative row sums. Individual real-rootedness follows in particular; Q.~Xiao also proved it by a different differential recurrence. We also give a second proof of the individual statement, by finite Schur--Szegő convolution, that does not use the common interlacer. These results prove Conjecture~4.2 of Xiao and Conjecture~11.2 of Ehrenborg--Hetyei--Readdy, with consequences for weakly 123-avoiding parking functions. We also prove real-rootedness for the image-size polynomial on all parking functions and for the ascent and descent polynomials of four two-pattern-avoiding classes.
Augmented singular cohomology, uniform matroids, and real-rootedness
We study the singular cohomology rings of toric varieties associated with several fans arising from uniform matroids. These rings generalize the Chow and augmented Chow rings of matroids. For the singular cohomology ring arising from the augmented Bergman fan of a uniform matroid, we construct an explicit basis derived from the retral basis for the singular cohomology ring of a uniform matroid introduced by the first author. We prove that the augmented Bergman fan does not yield a singular cohomology ring that satisfies the quasi-projective Strong Lefschetz property, whereas a suitable modification of the fan does. We then investigate the zeros of the corresponding refined Hodge--Poincaré polynomials. For uniform matroids, we prove that the refined Hodge--Poincaré polynomials associated with both the singular cohomology ring and the modified augmented singular cohomology ring are real-rooted. The former result resolves a conjecture of the first author. These results extend the real-rootedness theorem of Brändén and the second author for the Chow polynomials of uniform matroids. Finally, we relate the failure of real-rootedness for the augmented singular cohomology ring to the failure of Lefschetz properties.
The Chow Polynomial of the Noncrossing Partition Lattice
We prove that the Chow polynomial of the noncrossing partition lattice is equal to the descent generating function of tieless parking functions. As a consequence, we obtain new results on the descent statistic for parking functions.
Tangent classes for matroid building sets
Let \(M\) be a loopless matroid on a finite ground set \(E\), and let \(\G\) be a building set containing the top flat \(E\). We define a tangent class \(T_{M,\G}\) in the \(K\)-ring \(K(M,\G)\), which extends the tangent bundle class of the de Concini--Procesi wonderful model from realizable matroids to arbitrary matroids with building sets.
The class \(T_{M,\G}\) satisfies a matroidal Hirzebruch--Riemann--Roch package. More precisely, its Hirzebruch class \[ \operatorname{ch}(λ_y T_{M,\G}^{\vee})\operatorname{td}(T_{M,\G}) \] specializes to the Todd class and computes the Chow polynomial of \((M,\G)\). In the realizable case, these identities agree with the usual tangent-bundle computations on the corresponding wonderful model.
As an application, we prove Chern-number inequalities for \(T_{M,\G}\), including a Miyaoka--Yau type inequality with respect to the hyperplane class.
The singular cohomology ring of a uniform matroid: combinatorics and Lefschetz properties
The singular cohomology ring of a matroid is an algebraic invariant which generalizes the Chow ring of a matroid. We study combinatorial and Lefschetz properties of the singular cohomology ring of a uniform matroid. Combinatorially, we construct an explicit basis for the singular cohomology ring in terms of Koszul homology. From this basis we derive multiple formulas for the Hodge numbers of the cohomology ring that recover and extend known formulas for the Chow polynomial of a uniform matroid. We also use this basis to show that the singular cohomology ring of a uniform matroid satisfies the "quasi-projective strong Lefschetz property" -- a slight weakening of the Hard Lefschetz property found in the Chow ring of a matroid.
Dual Chow polynomials of matroids and posets
We introduce and study dual Chow functions associated to kernels in incidence algebras of weakly ranked posets. Given a kernel, its dual Chow function is defined as the Chow function associated to the sign-twisted reverse kernel. For kernels satisfying a natural skew-symmetry condition, such as the Eulerian kernel of an Eulerian poset or the kernel given by R-polynomials on Bruhat intervals, this construction recovers the ordinary Chow function. In contrast, when this skew-symmetry fails, the dual Chow function gives a genuinely different invariant.
The main example considered in this paper is the dual Chow function associated to the characteristic function. We develop the basic theory of these dual Chow functions, with particular emphasis on posets arising from matroids. We prove chain formulas, unimodality and gamma-positivity results, formulas under standard poset operations, and deletion formulas for matroids. Along the way, we also obtain a general deletion formula for the ab-index of matroids, which leads to new formulas for extended ab-indices and, in turn, specializes to several deletion formulas appearing in the literature.
Vertex Posets, Monotone Path Polytopes, and Chow Polynomials
Let $P\subset\mathbb R^n$ be a convex polytope and let $\ell$ be a linear functional which is nonconstant on every edge of $P$. The induced acyclic orientation determines positive and negative Białynicki-Birula type partitions of $P$ into unions of relative interiors of faces. Our first result establishes a duality: the positive partition is a stratification if and only if the negative one is a stratification. Our second result connects poset invariants with monotone path polytopes. Assuming the induced vertex relation admits the structure of a graded poset, we prove that the Chow polynomial of the resulting vertex poset agrees with the $h$-polynomial of a (dual) monotone path polytope.
Matroid analogues of Gal's conjecture
Well-known conjectures of Charney--Davis, Gal, and Nevo--Petersen predict increasingly strong positivity phenomena for the h-vectors of flag simplicial spheres. In this paper, we formulate and prove matroid analogues of these conjectures in the setting of Chow polynomials of matroids with building sets. Our proofs rely on toric geometry and make crucial use of tropical intersection theory.
We begin by introducing complete building sets, a class encompassing all maximal building sets and other important families such as minimal building sets of braid matroids. For matroids with complete building sets, we analyze the Chow rings of the associated toric varieties, and prove that their Hilbert--Poincaré polynomials are gamma-positive. From this analysis, we derive a combinatorial formula for the coefficients of the gamma-expansion, and use it to explicitly construct a simplicial complex $Γ$, whose f-vector coincides with the gamma-vector. This establishes a matroid analogue of the Nevo--Petersen conjecture. When the building set is maximal, we further prove that $Γ$ is balanced, confirming the strongest such analogue in this case. As an application, we obtain a new combinatorial formula for the gamma-expansion of the Poincaré polynomial of the Deligne--Mumford--Knudsen compactification $\overline{\mathcal{M}}_{0,n}$, and derive several novel numerical inequalities for its coefficients.
We also study the toric varieties of matroids with flag building sets, another class containing maximal building sets as well as several other prominent families. We prove that the Hilbert--Poincaré polynomials of these toric varieties are gamma-positive. This result establishes matroid analogues of the Charney--Davis and Gal conjectures, and simultaneously extends several recent gamma-positivity results for Chow polynomials.
Moment inequalities for Chow polynomials of matroids and bounds on Chern numbers
The Chow polynomial of a matroid is a fundamental invariant whose coefficients exhibit strong positivity properties, including $γ$-positivity. We interpret the normalized Chow coefficients as a probability distribution and establish new inequalities for its central moments. As consequences, we obtain bounds on the number of flags of flats and inequalities on the roots of the Chow polynomial.
We further relate these moment inequalities to algebraic geometry via the Hirzebruch $χ_y$-genus. This yields new inequalities for matroidal Chern numbers. In particular, for any matroid of rank $d+1$, we prove that $c_1c_{d-1}\le c_d$, with equality if and only if $d=1$ or the simplification of the matroid is Boolean.
Existence of Kähler algebras with Chow polynomials as Hilbert series
In this article, we study Chow polynomials of weakly ranked posets and prove the existence of Gorenstein algebras with the Kähler package such that their Hilbert--Poincaré series agrees with the Chow polynomial. Our statement provides evidence in support of a conjecture by Ferroni, Matherne and the second author about the existence of an algebra for every weakly ranked poset that generalizes the Feichtner--Yuzvinsky Chow ring for matroids. This allows us to prove strong inequalities for the coefficients of Chow polynomials; we prove log-concavity for all posets of weak rank at most six and provide counterexamples to log-concavity for any higher rank. For ranked posets we recover an even stronger condition, showing that the differences between consecutive coefficients constitute a pure O-sequence.
Chow polynomials of rank-uniform labeled posets
We introduce and develop the theory of UMEL-shellable posets. These are posets equipped with an edge-lexicographical labeling satisfying certain uniformity and monotonicity properties. This framework encompasses classical families of combinatorial geometries, including uniform matroids, projective and affine geometries, braid matroids of type A and B, and all Dowling geometries. It also comprises all rank-uniform supersolvable lattices, and therefore also all rank-uniform distributive lattices. Our main result establishes real-rootedness phenomena for the Chow polynomials, the augmented Chow polynomials, and the chain polynomials associated with those posets, thus making simultaneous progress towards conjectures by Ferroni--Schröter, Huh--Stevens, and Athanasiadis--Kalampogia-Evangelinou. In the special case of lattices of flats of matroids, the (augmented) Chow polynomials coincide with the Hilbert--Poincaré series of the Chow ring associated to the smooth and generally noncompact toric varieties of the (augmented) Bergman fan of the matroid, whereas the chain polynomial encodes the Hilbert--Poincaré series of the Stanley--Reisner ring of the Bergman complex of the matroid. Therefore, these real-rootedness results are tightly linked to the study of these algebro-geometric structures in matroid theory.
On gamma-vectors and Chow polynomials of restrictions of reflection arrangements
Simplicial arrangements are a special class of hyperplane arrangements, having the property that every chamber is a simplicial cone. It is known that the simpliciality property is preserved under taking restrictions. In this article we focus on the class of reflection arrangements and investigate two different polynomial invariants associated to them and their restrictions, the $h$-polynomial with its $γ$-vector and the Chow polynomial. We prove that all restrictions of reflection arrangements are $γ$-positive and give an explicit combinatorial formula of the Chow polynomial in type $B$. Furthermore we prove that for a special class of restrictions of arrangements of type $D$, called intermediate arrangements, both the $h$-polynomial as well as the Chow polynomial behave arithmetically, that is they interpolate linearly between the respective invariants for type $B$ and $D$.
Decompositions of Chow rings of direct sums of matroids
We prove two dual recursive decompositions as a graded $\underline{\mathrm{CH}}(M)\otimes \underline{\mathrm{CH}}(N)$-module of the Chow ring $\underline{\mathrm{CH}}(M\oplus N)$ of the direct sum of matroids. We use this to obtain a decomposition of $\underline{\mathrm{CH}}(M\oplus N)$ into irreducible $\underline{\mathrm{CH}}(M) \otimes \underline{\mathrm{CH}}(N)$-modules. The result implies a new recursive formula for the Eulerian numbers. Similarly, we find a recursive decomposition of the augmented Chow ring $\mathrm{CH}(M \oplus N)$ into $\mathrm{CH}(M)\otimes \mathrm{CH}(N)$-modules, generalizing some of the results of arXiv:2002.03341. We prove analogous decompositions of (augmented) Chow polynomials of weakly ranked posets in the sense of arXiv:2411.04070.
Eulerian posets and $Z$-polynomials
Let $P$ be a finite partially ordered set. In a recent series of works, Proudfoot introduced the notion of $Z$-polynomials associated with $P$-kernels, providing a unified framework for various intersection cohomology Poincaré polynomials arising in diverse areas of mathematics. One of the problems posed by Proudfoot was to interpret the $Z$-polynomial in a fundamental setting -- namely, when $P$ is the lattice of faces of a convex polytope (or, more generally, an Eulerian poset). We resolve this problem by proving that the $Z$-polynomial of any Eulerian poset coincides with the toric $h$-polynomial of the poset of all (possibly empty) closed intervals of $P$, ordered by reverse inclusion. Under suitable polyhedral conditions, this result identifies the $Z$-polynomial of a polytope with the Poincaré polynomial of the intersection cohomology of an associated auxiliary polytope. We prove some results about the Chow polynomials of the poset of intervals of an Eulerian poset and relate them with the Veronese transforms on polynomials.
Extending the ab-index
We prove for finite, graded, bounded posets, that the Poincaré-extended ab-index is obtained from the ab-index via the omega-transformation. This proves a conjecture by Dorpalen-Barry, Maglione, and the second author, and provides a more conceptual approach to ab-indices and Chow polynomials beyond R-labeled posets.
Chow polynomials of totally nonnegative matrices and posets
Huh-Stevens and Ferroni-Schröter independently conjectured that Hilbert-Poincaré series of Chow rings of geometric lattices have only real zeros. Ferroni, Matherne and the second author extended this conjecture to Chow polynomials of Cohen-Macaulay poset. In this paper we address the above conjectures by providing new defining relations and properties of Chow functions of posets and matrices. These are used, in conjunction with new techniques on interlacing sequences of polynomials, to prove that Chow polynomials of totally nonnegative matrices have only real zeros, which, in turn, proves the above conjectures for a class of posets that contains projective and affine geometries, face lattices of cubical polytopes, partition lattices and Dowling lattices, perfect matroid designs, and lattices of flats of paving matroids. We also study Chow polynomials of Toeplitz matrices in greater detail, and show how these are related the combinatorics of binomial and Sheffer posets, as well as to a family of generalized Eulerian polynomials with coefficients in the ring of symmetric polynomials that have been studied by e.g. Stanley, Brenti, Stembridge and Shareshian-Wachs.
Chow polynomials of simplicial posets with positive $h$-vector are real-rooted
We prove that a finite graded simplicial poset with a top element added has real-rooted Chow and augmented Chow polynomials whenever it has a positive $h$-vector. This class of posets include Cohen-Macaulay simplicial posets and in particular lattices of flats of uniform matroids.
The $\mathbb{S}_n$-equivariant Chow polynomial of the Braid matroid
We determine the generating function for the $\mathbb{S}_n$-equivariant Chow polynomials of the braid matroid $B_n$, using a modular interpretation of this polynomial recently given by Devkota, Robotis, and Zahariuc. We also give a new modular interpretation of the numerical Chow polynomial of $B_n$ in terms of a certain moduli space of genus-zero relative stable maps to $\mathbb{P}^1$.
Chow polynomials of uniform matroids are real-rooted
June Huh and Matthew Stevens conjectured that the Hilbert-Poincaré series of the Chow ring of any matroid is a polynomial with only real zeros. We prove this conjecture for the class of uniform matroids. We also prove that the Chow polynomial and the augmented Chow polynomial of any maximally ranked poset has only real zeros.
