$e$-positivity of chromatic quasisymmetric functions of bounce number three via the inverse Kostka matrix
Let $G$ be the incomparability graph of a natural unit interval order $P$ on $[n]$ with the associated Dyck path $\mathbf{d}$. Let $X_G(\mathbf{x},q)$ be its chromatic quasisymmetric function. Shareshian and Wachs conjectured that $X_G(\mathbf{x},q)$ is $e$-positive. At $q=1$, this is the Stanley--Stembridge conjecture, which was proved by Hikita in 2024. Using the combinatorial interpretation of the inverse Kostka matrix by Eğecioğlu and Remmel, we expand $X_G(\mathbf{x},q)$ in the elementary basis when $\mathbf{d}$ has bounce number three. In our expansion, every coefficient is an alternating sum of at most seven generating functions of $P$-tableaux in terms of the number of inversions. We then construct sign reversing injections between sets of $P$-tableaux preserving inversions. We prove that the coefficient of $e_λ$ lies in $\mathbb{N}[q]$ for every partition $λ=(λ_1,λ_2,λ_3)$ with $λ_2-λ_3\leq1$, and that $X_G(\mathbf{x},q)$ is $e$-positive whenever $P$ contains an antichain with $n-3$ elements, which extends the hook shape case of Cho and Huh.

A new proof of an Eğecioğlu--Remmel inverse Kostka matrix problem via a Garsia--Milne involution involving Sym and NSym
Eğecioğlu and Remmel provide a combinatorial proof (using special rim hook tableaux) that the product of the Kostka matrix $K$ and its inverse $K^{-1}$ equals the identity matrix $I$. They then pose the problem of proving the reverse identity $K^{-1}K =I$ combinatorially. Sagan and Lee prove a special case of this identity using overlapping special rim hook tableaux. Loehr and Mendes provide a full proof using bijective matrix algebra that relies on the Eğecioğlu--Remmel map. In this article, we solve the problem in full generality independent of the Eğecioğlu--Remmel bijection. To do this, we start by proving NSym versions of both Kostka matrix identities using sign-reversing involutions involving the tunnel hook coverings recently introduced by the first and third authors. Then we modify our sign-reversing involutions to reduce to Sym. Finally, we show that our bijection is different than the Loehr and Mendes result by constructing an injective map between special rim tableaux and the symmetric group $S_n.$

On a conjecture on 2-reduced Schur functions and Schur's Q-functions
Motivated by Sato and Mori's work on the Korteweg-de Vries (KdV) equation and the modified KdV equation, Mizukawa, Nakajima, and Yamada made a conjecture on 2-reduced Schur functions and Schur's Q-functions. The conjecture claims that certain sums of products of a Littlewood-Richardson coefficient and two 2-reduced Schur functions are equal to Schur's Q-functions up to a scalar multiple. In this paper we give a proof of the conjecture in cases which have not been proved yet. We introduce a new expression of Schur's Q-functions and use it to prove the conjecture. Combinatorics of the inverse Kostka matrix is also used. We also provide consideration of the conjecture in general case.

A combinatorial interpretation of the noncommutative inverse Kostka matrix
Published • View Publication • BIB
We provide a combinatorial formula for the expansion of immaculate noncommutative symmetric functions into complete homogeneous noncommutative symmetric functions. To do this, we introduce generalizations of Ferrers diagrams which we call GBPR diagrams. We define tunnel hooks, which play a role similar to that of the special rim hooks appearing in the Eğecioğlu-Remmel formula for the symmetric inverse Kostka matrix. We extend this interpretation to skew shapes and fully generalize to define immaculate functions indexed by integer sequences skewed by integer sequences. Finally, as an application of our combinatorial formula, we extend Campbell's results on ribbon decompositions of immaculate functions to a larger class of shapes.

On the Schur function expansion of a symmetric quasi-symmetric function
Published in Electronic J. Combinatorics 26 (4) (2019), #P4.50 • View Publication • BIB
Egge, Loehr, and Warrington proved a formula for the Schur function expansion of a symmetric function in terms of its expansion in fundamental quasi-symmetric functions. Their formula involves the coefficients of a modified inverse Kostka matrix. Recently Garsia and Remmel gave a simpler reformulation of Egge, Loehr, and Warrington's result, with a new proof. We give here a simple proof of Garsia and Remmel's version, using a sign-reversing involution.

Nested quantum Dyck paths and nabla(s_lambda)
Published • View Publication • BIB
We conjecture a combinatorial formula for the monomial expansion of the image of any Schur function under the Bergeron-Garsia nabla operator. The formula involves nested labeled Dyck paths weighted by area and a suitable "diagonal inversion" statistic. Our model includes as special cases many previous conjectures connecting the nabla operator to quantum lattice paths. The combinatorics of the inverse Kostka matrix leads to an elementary proof of our proposed formula when q=1. We also outline a possible approach for proving all the extant nabla conjectures that reduces everything to the construction of sign-reversing involutions on explicit collections of signed, weighted objects.

We present both a combinatorial characterization and a recurrent formula for the entries of the inverse Kostka matrix. An application to the topology of the classifying space BU(n) is obtained.

A sign-reversing involution for rooted special rim-hook tableaux
Published • View Publication • BIB
Egecioglu and Remmel gave an interpretation for the entries of the inverse Kostka matrix K^{-1} in terms of special rim-hook tableaux. They were able to use this interpretation to give a combinatorial proof that KK^{-1}=I but were unable to do the same for the equation K^{-1}K=I. We define a sign-reversing involution on rooted special rim-hook tableaux which can be used to prove that the last column of this second product is correct. In addition, following a suggestion of Chow we combine our involution with a result of Gasharov to give a combinatorial proof of a special case of the (3+1)-free Conjecture of Stanley and Stembridge.

A note on a combinatorial interpretation of the e-coefficients of the chromatic symmetric function
Stanley has studied a symmetric function generalization X_G of the chromatic polynomial of a graph G. The innocent-looking Stanley-Stembridge Poset Chain Conjecture states that the expansion of X_G in terms of elementary symmetric functions has nonnegative coefficients if G is a clawfree incomparability graph. Here we give a combinatorial interpretation of these coefficients by combining Gasharov's work on the conjecture with Egecioglu and Remmel's combinatorial interpretation of the inverse Kostka matrix. This gives a new proof of a partial nonnegativity result of Stanley. As an interesting byproduct we derive a previously unnoticed result relating acyclic orientations to P-tableaux.
