Grothendieck weights and K-theoretic positivity for matroids
We introduce a method for studying $K$-theoretic positivity on permutohedral toric varieties through the topology of spaces arising in tropical geometry. The key ingredient is the theory of Grothendieck weights developed by the author.
We prove two positivity results using this method. The first result is the positivity of the Euler characteristics of tautological bundles associated with an arbitrary matroid and twisted by a nef line bundle. This gives numerical evidence for a conjectural vanishing theorem.
The second result generalizes the external activity complex of Berget--Fink, originally defined for a pair of matroids, to the case of any tuple of matroids with no common loop. We deduce a formula for its graded $K$-polynomial in terms of exterior powers of the dual tautological quotient classes of the matroids. After a change of variables, its coefficients alternate in sign. We also prove the Cohen--Macaulayness of each such complex using the vanishing theorems for combinatorial geometries developed by Eur--Fink--Larson. This proof is new even in the case of a pair of matroids. As an application, we interpret certain Chern numbers of tautological quotient classes as counts of facets, partially answering a question of Berget--Eur--Spink--Tseng.
Shifted lower Bruhat intervals are EL-shellable
Let $W$ be an arbitrary Coxeter group. The shifted Bruhat interval $[w_1,w_2]\,x^{-1}$, the translate of the Bruhat interval $[w_1,w_2]$ by an element $x$, is partially ordered by the Bruhat order of $W$. These posets arise from affine pavings of Richardson varieties, and in general they are neither twisted intervals nor tilted Bruhat intervals. Our main result is that the shifted lower intervals $[e,w]\,x^{-1}$ are EL-shellable for every Coxeter group, via an explicit labeling of each cover by a reflection. Along the way we show that $[e,w]\,x^{-1}$ is a graded poset with a unique maximum given by the Demazure product and a unique minimum given by an opposite Demazure operator that we introduce.
Edge-Span Chern Algebras of Graphical Configuration Spaces
Place the vertices of a finite graph at projective points. Each edge defines a span map to $\mathrm{Gr}(2,n)$; the pulled-back Chern classes generate a graded algebra $A_G^{(n)}$. This assignment is a covariant graph functor, so the abstract graded-algebra type is a graph invariant. In ambient dimension four, the Hilbert series is incomparable with the chromatic and Tutte polynomials. On five vertices in dimension three, the $34$ graph classes yield $33$ algebra types, strictly refining both classical polynomials. For every tree $T$, we obtain a closed Hilbert-series formula depending only on $|V(T)|$ and $n$, while $A_T^{(3)}$ determines $T$ up to isomorphism. More precisely, its cubic relation data is a complete tree invariant of polynomial size. Finally, the graphical configuration space embeds as a dense open in the picture variety, and picture spaces with equal additive homology can have nonisomorphic edge-Chern algebras.
Derangement permutation matrices and orbit harmonics
Let $\mathbf{x}_{n \times n}$ be an $n \times n$ matrix of variables and let $S = \mathbb{F}[\mathbf{x}_{n \times n}]$ be the polynomial ring over these variables where $\mathbb{F}$ is a field of characteristic zero. Regard $S$ as the coordinate ring of the affine space $\mathbb{F}^{n \times n}$ of $n \times n$ $\mathbb{F}$-matrices. Let $\mathfrak{D}_n \subseteq \mathbb{F}^{n \times n}$ be the locus of derangement permutation matrices. We study the orbit harmonics quotient ring ${\bf R}(\mathfrak{D}_n) = S/\mathrm{gr} \, \mathbf{I}(\mathfrak{D}_n)$ where $\mathrm{gr} \, \mathbf{I}(\mathfrak{D}_n)$ is the associated graded ideal of the vanishing ideal $\mathbf{I}(\mathfrak{D}_n) \subseteq S$. We give an explicit generating set of $\mathrm{gr} \, \mathbf{I}(\mathfrak{D}_n),$ relate the Hilbert series of $\mathbf{R}(\mathfrak{D}_n)$ to the Foata transformation and the longest increasing subsequence statistic on $\mathfrak{S}_n$, and give an alternating sum formula for the graded $\mathfrak{S}_n$-character of $\mathbf{R}(\mathfrak{D}_n)$. Our proofs make heavy use of the mapping cone construction of homological algebra.
A Hopf algebra on permutations with a coupling product
We define a coupling product and a draw coproduct on permutations and show that they define a graded, connected, cocommutative, free Hopf algebra $\mathbb{KS}$. In characteristic zero,
this implies that $\mathbb{KS}$ is isomorphic to a certain cocommutative Hopf algebra associated with the dual of the coradical filtration of the Malvenuto--Reutenauer Hopf algebra on permutations.
The coupling product and draw coproduct are permutation analogues of the product and coproduct on the monomial basis of symmetric functions;
therefore, we can say that our presentation is a monomial basis for $\mathbb{KS}$.
Various Bialgebras Of Representative Functions On Free Monoids
Factorization and decomposition of representative functions on a free monoid X * (generated by an alphabet X ) and with values in a ring A containing Q are equivalent to factorization and decomposition of their graphs (within the A-algebra of rational noncommutative series over X ) admitting linear representations (thanks to the Kleene-Sch{ü}tzenberger theorem). To factorize and to decompose effectively these graphs, we examine various products of noncommutative series (as concatenation, shuffle and its $φ$deformations) and co-products such that, for A is a field K, their associated non graded commutative and co-noncommutative bialgebras of series are isomorphic to the Sweedler's dual of the graded noncommutative co-commutative bialgebras of polynomials having, for the concatenation, only Kleene stars of the planes as characters, or equivalently, only the planes are infinitesimal characters (thanks to a Ree's theorem like).
Beyond Mock Modularity: Elliptic Corrections for Higher Dyson Ranks
When $m = 1$, the Dyson rank generating function is a classical bridge between partition theory, Ramanujan's mock theta functions, and the theory of harmonic Maass forms and nonholomorphic Jacobi forms. The rank is a statistic on partitions, and the higher Dyson systems, for $m \geq 2$, are a natural multivariable refinement of it, combining $m$ graded rank contributions. Unlike the classical case, these higher systems are not expected to fit the mock-modular framework, which raises the question of what analytic structure governs them. We show that their root-of-unity specializations carry a hidden elliptic structure. A finite $q$-difference recurrence produces an explicit polynomial obstruction to the expected index $m$ elliptic transformation law, and because the obstruction is finite, its partial fractions canonically determine finitely many Appell--Lerch correction terms that remove it. The corrected functions satisfy a twisted index $m$ elliptic law; a natural translation removes the twist, and their holomorphic finite parts admit finite theta decompositions. Thus, the natural analogue of Dyson's mock-modular phenomenon at higher $m$ is not mock modularity but a finite theta decomposition governed by an index $m$ elliptic transformation law. These results grew out of a human--AI collaboration, and the key new formulas were formalized and machine-verified in Lean/Mathlib by AxiomProver.
Some Remarks on Hessians and Wronskians
The purpose of this note is to elaborate on the apparent connection between Wronskians and Hessians. More generally, to a given subspace of homogeneous bivariate forms over the complex numbers, we associate two determinantal polynomials called the $W$-polynomial and the $\hat{W}$-polynomial. We give expansion and factorization formulas for these polynomials, and study their behavior under change of coordinates and duality. As an application, we give another proof of Iarrobino's theorem on the strong Lefschetz property for standard graded Artinian Gorenstein algebras in codimension two.
FFLV bases for covariant representations of $\mathfrak{gl}(m|n)$
We study the PBW filtration on covariant representations for the Lie superalgebra $\mathfrak{gl}(m|n)$. We prove for all covariant weights of the form $(λ|μ,0^{n-1})$, that there exists a lattice polytope such that the lattice points of this polytope parametrize a basis of the corresponding associated graded space. As a consequence, we obtain degenerations of partial flag supervarieties for the supergroup $GL(m|n)$ into toric supervarieties.
Characteristic Independence of Betti Numbers of Monomial Ideals in Five Variables
Alesandroni proved that Betti numbers of monomial ideals in at most four variables are independent of the characteristic of the base field, while Peeva exhibited characteristic-dependent Betti numbers in six variables. We prove that the five-variable case is characteristic-independent. More precisely, if $S=k[x_1,\ldots,x_5]$ and $M\subseteq S$ is a monomial ideal, then the multigraded, graded, and total Betti numbers of $S/M$ are independent of $\operatorname{char}(k)$. The proof reduces arbitrary monomial ideals to squarefree twin ideals and then applies Hochster's formula. The topological input is that simplicial complexes on at most five vertices have torsion-free integral homology. Peeva's example arising from the six-vertex triangulation of $\mathbb{RP}^2$ shows that the bound is sharp. We also record a computation of the graded Betti tables of squarefree monomial ideals in five variables up to relabeling.
The Young Tableaux Hopf algebra and multiple Schur series
In this paper, we introduce multiple Schur series, which are defined by Schur-type sums over semi-standard Young tableaux and generalize both Schur multiple zeta values and multiple Eisenstein series. To study their algebraic structure, we construct a connected, commutative, graded Hopf algebra of Young tableaux and identify its linearized quotient with the quasi-shuffle algebra. Within this Hopf algebra and its quotient, we establish several relations, including a hook formula and the Jacobi--Trudi formula. Furthermore, we relate this Hopf algebra to the ring of symmetric functions, which yields polynomial reduction formulas for tableaux with constant entries. As applications, we recover Schur multiple zeta values, introduce Schur multiple Eisenstein series together with a $q$-analogue of Schur multiple zeta values, and discuss their (quasi)modularity.
Graded families of ideals and convex regions
We study the interplay between graded families of ideals in $\mathbb{K}$-domains and their associated convex regions. These regions, called Newton-Okounkov regions, arise naturally from graded families of ideals associated to a valuation with one-dimensional leaves. Our main focus is to compute asymptotic resurgence number of a pair of graded families of ideals. By combining techniques from Attouch--Wets topology and convex-geometric properties of Newton-Okounkov regions, we characterize the asymptotic resurgence number through containment relations between the pair of corresponding Newton-Okounkov regions.
Graded Betti numbers of generalized split--join graphs and applications
We determine the full graded Betti tables of graph families that subsume several classes studied recently in the literature, namely the generalized multiple complete split-like graphs and the generalized clique-star graphs with arbitrary clique block sizes. The method combines Hochster's formula with a precise decomposition of the associated independence complexes into disjoint unions of simplices and iterated joins of discrete complexes. This reduces every graded Betti number to an explicit coefficient extraction formula and yields closed expressions for the linear strand, higher strands, Hilbert series, regularity, projective dimension, and extremal Betti numbers. In particular, we prove a sharp criterion for $2$-linear resolution and identify the regularity corner in terms of the number of nontrivial clique blocks. As applications, we recover and extend earlier results on equal-block split-like graphs, obtain complete formulas for pineapple graphs, and derive consequences for power graphs of cyclic groups, elementary abelian groups, and prime-power dihedral groups.
A Littlewood-Richardson Rule for Forest Polynomials via the Schubert Bialgebra
The forest polynomials $\mathfrak{P}_a$ of Nadeau-Tewari form a $\mathbb{Z}$-basis of $\mathbb{Z}[x_1, x_2, \dots]$ whose role for the cohomology of the quasisymmetric flag variety parallels that of Schubert polynomials for the classical flag variety. Nonnegativity of the structure constants $β^c_{a,b}$ in $\mathfrak{P}_a \mathfrak{P}_b = \sum_c β^c_{a,b} \mathfrak{P}_c$ is known, but no Littlewood-Richardson-style enumerative rule has been available. We give such a rule: $β^c_{a,b}$ counts pairs of forest RC graphs of forest-codes $a$ and $b$ whose lift product lands on a forest RC graph of forest-code and weight both equal to $c$. The same rule descends to the cup product on $H^\bullet(QFl_n)$. The proof introduces a Schubert bialgebra $\mathcal{A}$ and lifts the multiplication on its graded dual $\mathcal{D}$ to a product on a free abelian group $\mathcal{B}RC$ of bounded RC graphs; the same machinery yields enumerative LR rules for the dual Schubert, dual key, dual forest, and dual slide bases of $\mathcal{D}$.
Betti Numbers of Sequentially Cohen-Macaulay Co-Chordal Graphs and Their Applications
We study sequentially Cohen-Macaulay co-chordal graphs through the glued clique complexes of their chordal complements. Using the characterization of these complements as $(d_1,\ldots,d_q)$-trees, we derive explicit formulas for the graded Betti numbers of the associated edge ideals, yielding a complete homological characterization of sequentially Cohen-Macaulay co-chordal graphs. As applications, we determine exact homological invariants for several important graph families, including split graphs, threshold graphs, and prime ideal graphs, and classify their Cohen-Macaulay cases. We further characterize the sequentially Cohen-Macaulay nilpotent graphs of finite direct products of Artinian chain rings and establish a closed formula for their graded Betti numbers in terms of local nilpotency indices and residue field cardinalities. Finally, we classify the zero-divisor graphs of $\mathbb{Z}_n$, proving that they are sequentially Cohen-Macaulay if and only if $n=2p$ or $n=p^a$, where $p$ is a prime.
On Ziegler pairs of line arrangements: from non-existence to abundance
We study Ziegler pairs of line arrangements from both numerical and homological perspectives. First, we show that for arrangements of $d<9$ lines the intersection lattice determines the exponent data considered here. Then we list six distinct Ziegler pair with $d=10$. In particular, we construct higher-degree examples with the same intersection lattice, the same minimal degree of a Jacobian relation, and the same Hilbert function of the Milnor algebra, but with different minimal graded free resolutions.
Perfect matchings, Fano planes, and orthogonal bases of type $E_8$
We use perfect matchings and labelled Fano planes to construct and study the $2025$ orthogonal bases of positive roots in the $E_8$ root system. The set of these bases forms a highly structured, Bruhat-like graded poset $(Ω, \leq_Q)$ whose rank function can be computed from the cardinalities of so-called generalized Rothe diagrams. We give combinatorial characterizations of these diagrams in terms of matchings and Fano planes, and we explain how to compute the ranks of the elements of $Ω$ using suitable combinatorial statistics such as the weights of perfect matchings. We establish simple formulas for the rank generating functions of $Ω$ and of its 50 congruence classes under a natural order congruence relation. Our derivation of the generating functions contains some intermediate results on general perfect matchings and labelled Fano planes that can be stated without mentioning root systems and may be of independent interest.
Higher cotangent cohomology for Stanley-Reisner rings
Inspired by work of Altmann and Christophersen, we study the graded pieces of the cotangent cohomology $T^i_{S_{\mathcal{K}}}$, $i\geq 3$ of the Stanley-Reisner ring $S_{\mathcal{K}}$ associated to a simplicial complex $\mathcal{K}$. We prove a localization formula allowing one to reduce to the case of negative weights. Our results give a complete description of $T^3$ and $T^4$ in terms of the topology of $\mathcal{K}$ whenever $\mathcal{K}$ is a flag complex. As an application, we give a sufficient criterion for the vanishing of $T^3$ for simplicial spheres, classify two-spheres that have vanishing $T^3$, and show that the boundary complex of the dual associahedron has vanishing $T^3$. Our results make use of the arborescent resolutions considered by Hancharuk, Laurent-Gengoux, and Strobl. We give an alternative and self-contained treatment of these resolutions that may be of independent interest.
Filtered order complexes and magnitude homology of finite graded posets
In this paper, we study the family of subcomplexes of the order complexes of finite graded posets, defined via its rank function. We address three main topics. (1) We describe the general topological properties of these subcomplexes in relation to magnitude homology of graded posets. (2) For posets whose order complexes are simplicial subdivisions of closed manifolds, we show that the homology groups of these subcomplexes agree with that of the undelying manifold except for the top dimension, where it is a nontrivial free abelian group. (3) For shellable graded posets, we prove that each of the subcomplexes are also shellable. Moreover, in the case of geometric semilattices, we show that each subcomplexes are homotopy equivalent to a nontrivial wedge sums of spheres of the same dimension.
A skew Murnaghan--Nakayama rule for Hopf dual pairs
We develop a uniform skew Murnaghan--Nakayama theory for graded Hopf dual pairs equipped with a nondegenerate Hopf pairing. Using the completed Cauchy element, its grouplike factorization, and the resulting partial contraction operators, we establish a general skew Cauchy identity together with an abstract skew Murnaghan--Nakayama rule. Specializing this framework recovers and extends the classical skew Murnaghan--Nakayama rule for symmetric functions, and yields new skew Murnaghan--Nakayama formulas in several settings, including the dual pairs $(\mathrm{NSym}, \mathrm{QSym}) $ and $(Λ^{(k)}, Λ_{(k)}) $ arising in $k$-Schur theory, as well as the type $C$ affine Grassmannian context.
As applications, we obtain generating functions for irreducible characters of Ariki--Koike algebras, including their type $A$ and type $B$ specializations, as well as Hecke--Clifford algebras and $\mathfrak q$-rook monoid algebras. We also give ribbon-tableau expansions for skew $(q,t)$-Kostka polynomials and for the entries of the inverse transition matrix, thereby answering a question of Carbonara (1998). Finally, by specializing the auxiliary alphabet $Y$ to sums of powers of primitive roots of unity, we derive a skew plethystic Murnaghan--Nakayama formula together with a Schur expansion for skew modular Schur functions; as a further consequence, we confirm Walker's conjecture (1994) by showing that if the transition from the modular Schur functions to the Schur basis is trivial in the row indexed by $λ$, then $λ$ must be a $k$-core.
