The lattice of flats $\mathcal L_M$ of a matroid $M$ is combinatorially well-behaved and, when $M$ is realizable, admits a geometric model in the form of a "Schubert variety of hyperplane arrangement". In contrast, the lattice of flats of a polymatroid exhibits many combinatorial pathologies and admits no similar geometric model.
We address this situation by defining the lattice $\mathcal L_P$ of "combinatorial flats" of a polymatroid $P$. Combinatorially, $\mathcal L_P$ exhibits good behavior analogous to that of $\mathcal L_M$: it is graded, determines $P$ when $P$ is simple, and is top-heavy. When $P$ is realizable over a field of characteristic 0, we show that $\mathcal L_P$ is modeled by "the Schubert variety of a subspace arrangement".
Our work generalizes a number of results of Ardila-Boocher and Huh-Wang on Schubert varieties of hyperplane arrangements; however, the geometry of Schubert varieties of subspace arrangements is noticeably more complicated than that of Schubert varieties of hyperplane arrangements. Many natural questions remain open.
Euclidean Distance Optimization Within the Grassmannian
Given a subvariety of the Grassmannian and a data point, we seek to find a point on the subvariety minimizing the Euclidean distance to the data point. The number of complex critical points of this optimization problem is the Euclidean distance (ED) degree. We show that the ED discriminant of the whole Grassmannian, that is, the set of data points with a number of critical points different than the ED degree, is the discriminant of the characteristic polynomial of the data as a projection matrix. Another closely connected algebraic complexity measure for a subvariety in the Grassmannian is the Grassmann distance (GD) degree, which is the number of complex critical points of the distance optimization problem when the data point itself is in the Grassmannian. We give formulae for ED and GD degrees of geometrically meaningful subvarieties of the Grassmannian, namely, products of smaller Grassmannians, matroid realization varieties, and Schubert varieties.
Staircase diagrams, pattern avoidance, and smooth permutations
A well known result due to Lakshmibai and Sandhya states that smooth Schubert varieties of type A correspond to permutations that avoid the patterns 3412 and 4231. It was later shown by the second author and Slofstra that staircase diagrams over a simply-laced Dynkin diagram are in bijection with smooth Schubert varieties of the corresponding type. We explore how the poset structure of staircase diagrams is connected with pattern avoidance on smooth permutations. As an application, we enumerate several subclasses of smooth permutations which are characterized by pattern avoidance. These subclasses include the class of polished permutations which were studied by Gaetz and Gao.
The Lehmer complex of a Bruhat interval
We introduce Lehmer codes for several finite Coxeter groups, including all classical Weyl groups. These codes correspond to embed products of chains in the Bruhat order, which allow us to associate to each lower Bruhat interval of these groups a multicomplex whose $f$-polynomial is the Poincaré polynomial of the interval. Via a general construction, we prove that these polynomials are $h$-polynomials of vertex-decomposable simplicial complexes, which we call Lehmer complexes. Moreover we provide a classification, in terms of unimodal permutations, of Poincaré polynomials of smooth Schubert varieties in flag manifolds.
Torsion proliferation
This paper considers the generic behaviour of sheaves supported on Schubert varieties in finite flag varieties. Our main results are that, for any fixed prime $p$, as the rank of the associated algebraic group grows, almost every intersection cohomology sheaf admits $p$-torsion in its stalks or costalks, and almost every indecomposable parity sheaf is not perverse. For certain families of partial flag varieties we also determine explicit asymptotics for this growth.
A quasisymmetric analog of Grassmannian Schubert varieties
We show that the cohomology rings of toric Richardson varieties in the Grassmannian are finite truncations of the ring of quasisymmetric functions. We exhibit an affine paving of each such variety whose cell closures give rise to the basis of fundamental quasisymmetric functions. We similarly interpret the homology of these varieties in terms of the ring of noncommutative symmetric functions and show that the expansion of the homological class of any torus-invariant subvariety into the affine paving basis agrees with the expansion of a corresponding generalized noncommutative ribbon function into the ribbon basis. By taking the direct limit of all toric Richardson varieties, we obtain an ind-variety equipped with a weak $H$-group structure whose cohomology is the Hopf algebra of quasisymmetric functions. We conjecture that it is isomorphic to a similar $H$-group constructed by Baker--Richter.
As a byproduct, we deduce that the $f$-vectors of shard polytopes are log-concave, making the first progress on a question of Ferroni--Schröter for matroid base polytopes.
Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of skew-symmetric matrix Schubert varieties
Skew-symmetric matrix Schubert varieties are determinantal varieties obtained by intersecting matrix Schubert varieties with the space of skew-symmetric matrices. They are closely related to the orbit closures of the symplectic group action on the flag variety, and their torus-equivariant K-classes are the symplectic Grothendieck polynomials. We compute the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of skew-symmetric matrix Schubert varieties by giving a combinatorial formula for the degree of symplectic Grothendieck polynomials. In addition, we characterize the highest-degree homogeneous component of a symplectic Grothendieck polynomial and compute the maximal Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of skew-symmetric matrix Schubert varieties.
Contact Rigidity and Comparison Kernels for Type A lci Schubert Varieties
Let $X_w$ be a Type A local complete intersection Schubert variety. We prove Contact Rigidity: the existence of two smooth singular components forces some pair of singular components to contain a common Schubert subvariety of codimension one in each. If the singular locus is a single smooth component $X_z$, the rational comparison kernel is $IC_z$, and $P_{u,w}(q)=1+q^{(\ell(w)-\ell(z)-1)/2}$ for every $u\leq z$. The first proof combines pattern avoidance with a computer-assisted finite overlap classification, rectangle inheritance, and extremal repairs. The second establishes the hypotheses of Woo's theorem and uses Euler characteristics and Bruhat triangularity to identify the entire perverse kernel.
Fence Complexes and Toric Degenerations of Positroid Varieties
We associate to each positroid variety in the Grassmannian $\mathrm{Gr}(k,n)$ a polyhedral complex, which we call a fence complex. Fence complexes consist of unions of faces of the Gelfand-Tsetlin polytope $P_{k,n}$ associated to a fundamental weight $ω_k$. We show that these fence complexes are homeomorphic to closed balls. Furthermore, they endow the Gelfand-Tsetlin polytope with the structure of a regular CW complex, giving a polyhedral complex presentation of the regular CW complex structure on $\mathrm{Gr}(k,n)_{\geq 0}$. We also show that the Ehrhart polynomial of a fence complex equals the Hilbert polynomial of the associated positroid variety. We prove that under the Sturmfels-Gonciulea-Lakshmibai degeneration of $\mathrm{Gr}(k,n)$ to the toric variety of the Gelfand-Tsetlin polytope, positroid varieties degenerate to the reduced union of toric varieties corresponding to their fence complexes. As an application, we classify when positroid varieties contained inside hook Schubert varieties are arithmetically Gorenstein. We also derive a recursive character formula for cyclic Demazure modules, which we show is equivalent to a formula of Almousa, Gao and Huang.
Polyhedral models for K-theory of toric and flag varieties
In 1992, Pukhlikov and Khovanskii provided a description of the cohomology ring of toric variety as a quotient of the ring of differential operators on spaces of virtual polytopes. Later Kaveh generalized this construction to the case of cohomology rings for full flag varieties. In this paper we extend Pukhlikov-Khovanskii type presentation to the case of K-theory of toric and flag varieties. First, we study the Frobenius algebras obtained as quotients of the group algebra of free abelian group (possibly of infinite rank). Then we apply this construction to define a K-ring associated to a linear family of (virtual) polytopes. We study in detail two examples of such families: the family of integer (virtual) polytopes with a fixed normal fan and the family of (virtual) Gelfand-Zetlin polytopes. We show that the K-theory of toric and flag varieties can be realized as K-rings of the above families and use this to get natural set of relations in the above K-rings. Further, we describe the classes of structure sheaves of toric orbit closures and Schubert varieties in type A flag varieties. Finally, we show that our results also hold true in T-equivariant setting.
Ideals defining components of two-row Springer fibers
Springer fibers are subvarieties of the flag variety parameterized by nilpotent matrices. They are central objects of study in geometry representation theory. This paper focuses on two-row Springer fibers, those corresponding to nilpotent matrices with two Jordan blocks. Irreducible components of two-row Springer fibers are in bijection with two-row standard Young tableaux and also with noncrossing matchings.
Inspired by the combinatorial commutative algebra of matrix Schubert varieties, we define a polynomial ideal for each noncrossing matching and prove that these ideals define the corresponding components of the Springer fiber. Our proofs leverage geometric descriptions of Springer fibers established by Fung, Stroppel--Webster, Fresse, and Goldwasser--Nadeem--Sun--Tymoczko. Using these ideals to compute examples, we give two conjectural formulas for the cohomology class of each component of a two-row Springer fiber. We apply commutative algebra techniques to prove these conjectures for a specific family of two-row tableaux.
Constructing Maximal Bumpless Pipedreams for Double Grothendieck Polynomials
Pipedreams and bumpless pipedreams are two combinatorial models that compute double Grothendieck polynomials. While studying matrix Schubert varieties, Pechenik, Speyer, and Weigandt defined a permutation statistic$\mathsf{rajcode}(\cdot)$ that captures the leading monomial of the top-degree components of a Grothendieck polynomial. Combinatorially, their result implies that there exists a unique pipedream (or bumpless pipedream) with row weight $\mathsf{rajcode}(w)$ and column weight $\mathsf{rajcode}(w^{-1})$. A construction of such a pipedream was subsequently given by Chou and Yu. In this paper, we resolve the bumpless pipedream version of this problem by providing an explicit algorithm.
Toric Schubert Varieties in Partial Flag Varieties
In this article, we investigate the toric Schubert varieties in partial flag varieties $G/P$ for a connected semisimple algebraic group $G$. Using Deodhar's decomposition of Richardson varieties and the work of Pasquier, we give an explicit description of the fan of a toric Schubert variety, leading to a combinatorial model for its cones. As an application, we obtain necessary and sufficient conditions for smoothness of toric Schubert varieties in terms of the Cartan integers associated to a reduced expression. Furthermore, we prove that for a Coxeter-type element $w \in W^P$, the interval $[e,w]_{W^P}$ is a supersolvable join-distributive lattice. Finally, we apply these results to the study of spherical and horospherical Schubert varieties, providing a combinatorial method for checking the smoothness via the associated toric Schubert varieties.
Tropical matroid Schubert varieties and the graded Möbius algebra
We introduce tropical matroid Schubert varieties, a tropical analogue of arrangement Schubert varieties associated with realisable matroids. We prove that the tropical cohomology ring of the tropical matroid Schubert variety associated to any matroid $M$ is isomorphic to the graded Möbius algebra $\operatorname{B}^\bullet(M)$. This yields a geometric model for $\operatorname{B}^\bullet(M)$, extending the geometric setting of arrangement Schubert varieties to arbitrary matroids, including non-realisable ones.
Towards the characterization of minimum weight codewords of Schubert codes
A conjectural formula for the minimum weight of Schubert codes was conjectured by Ghorpade in 2000. This was established by Xiang in 2008. In 2018, Ghorpade and Singh provided a new proof of this conjecture. Moreover, they also conjectured that the minimum weight codewords of the Schubert codes $C_\a (\ell, m)$ are given by the so-called \emph{Schubert decomposable codewords}. We prove the validity of the conjecture for all Schubert varieties $Ω_{\a}(\ell, V_m)$ for all but finitely many values of $q$.
Graded Ehrhart Theory of Unimodular Zonotopes
Graded Ehrhart theory is a new $q$-analogue of Ehrhart theory based on the orbit harmonics method. We study the graded Ehrhart theory of unimodular zonotopes from a matroid-theoretic perspective. Generalizing a result of Stanley (1991), we prove that the graded lattice point count of a unimodular zonotope is a $q$-evaluation of its Tutte polynomial. We conclude that the graded Ehrhart series of a unimodular zonotope is rational and obeys graded Ehrhart--Macdonald reciprocity. In an algebraic direction, we prove that the harmonic algebra of a unimodular zonotope is a coordinate ring of its associated arrangement Schubert variety. Using the geometry of arrangement Schubert varieties, we prove that the harmonic algebra of a unimodular zonotope is finitely generated and Cohen--Macaulay. We also give an explicit presentation of the harmonic algebra of a unimodular zonotope in terms of generators and relations. We conclude by classifying which unimodular zonotopes have Gorenstein harmonic algebras. Our work answers, in the special case of unimodular zonotopes, two conjectures of Reiner and Rhoades (2024).
Antidiagonal Initial Complexes of Infinite Matrix Schubert Varieties are Cohen-Macaulay
We show that, under certain constraints, the Stanley-Reisner ring of an infinite simplicial complex is Cohen-Macaulay in the sense of ideals and weak Bourbaki unmixed. We apply this result to prove the wanted claim -- that initial complexes of matrix Schubert varieties corresponding to infinite permutations in $S_{\infty}$ with respect to an antidiagonal term order are Cohen-Macaulay (in the same sense), giving rise to new examples of non-Noetherian Cohen-Macaulay rings.
Classical double Grothendieck transitions
Kirillov and Naruse have constructed double Grothendieck polynomials to represent the equivariant K-theory classes of Schubert varieties in the complete flag manifolds of types B, C, and D. We derive a recursive formula for these polynomials, extending certain K-theoretic transition equations known in type A to all classical types. As an application, we obtain an identity that expands the K-Stanley symmetric functions in types B, C, and D into positive linear combinations of K-theoretic Schur P- and Q-functions. We also resolve several positivity conjectures related to the skew generalizations of the latter functions.
Billey-Postnikov posets, rationally smooth Schubert varieties, and Poincaré duality
Billey-Postnikov (BP) decompositions govern when Schubert varieties $X(w)$ decompose as bundles of smaller Schubert varieties. We further develop the theory of BP decompositions and show that, in finite type, they can be recognized by pattern conditions and are indexed by the order ideals of a poset $\mathsf{bp}(w)$ that we introduce; we conjecture that this holds in any Coxeter group. We then apply BP decompositions to show that, when $X(w)$ is rationally smooth and $W$ simply laced, the Schubert structure constants $c_{uv}^w$ satisfy a triangularity property, yielding a canonical involution on the Schubert cells of $X(w)$ respecting Poincaré duality. We also classify the rationally smooth Bruhat intervals in finite type (other than $E$) which admit generalized Lehmer codes, answering questions and conjectures of Billey-Fan-Losonczy, Bolognini-Sentinelli, and Bishop-Milićević-Thomas. Finally, we show that rationally smooth Schubert varieties in infinite type need not have Grassmannian BP decompositions, disproving conjectures of Richmond-Slofstra and Oh-Richmond.

Let $G_{\mathbb{R}}$ be a Lie group of Hermitian type, and $L(λ)$ a highest weight Harish-Chandra module of $G_{\mathbb{R}}$ with highest weight $λ$. In this article, we exhibit a bijection between the set of connected Dynkin subdiagrams containing the noncompact simple root and the set of unitary highest weight modules $L(-wρ-ρ)$, where $ρ$ is half the sum of positive roots. We find that $L(-wρ-ρ)$ is unitary if and only if the Schubert variety $X(w)$ is smooth. We also give the cardinality of the set of unitary highest weight modules $L(-wρ-ρ)$ for each Kazhdan-Lusztig right cell.
