Minimal Submanifolds and Waists of Locally Symmetric Spaces
We show that compact locally symmetric manifolds $M$ with universal cover the symmetric space $X$ for $SL(n,\mathbb{R})$ form a topological higher $d$-expander family for $d\leq n/8$. We prove the same statement for $SL(n,\mathbb{R})$ replaced by a split simple non-compact real Lie group $G$ and for $d$ linear in the rank of $G$. We accomplish this by showing that minimal submanifolds of low codimension in such $M$ must have volume comparable to the volume of $M$. Our proof is based on a new monotonicity formula for minimal submanifolds of $X$, together with bounds on the decay of matrix coefficients for unitary representations of higher rank Lie groups. We also give the first locally symmetric example of power-law systolic freedom. This paper partially supersedes \cite{fl24}.
The Orlik--Solomon algebra of a locally geometric poset and cohomology of complex abelian arrangements
We construct an Orlik--Solomon algebra for any locally geometric poset as a natural generalization of the one for geometric lattices. This algebra has several interesting features, including a combinatorial no-broken-circuit basis that we obtain through Gröbner basis theory. When the poset captures the intersection data of an arrangement of certain subgroups in a complex abelian Lie group, we infuse the Orlik--Solomon algebra with topological information to compute the cohomology of the arrangement complement. In particular, when the Lie group is compact, we present an explicit differential graded algebra whose cohomology is the rational cohomology of the arrangement complement. We further exhibit a family of abelian arrangements whose integer cohomology has torsion.
Methods of free probability
This is an introduction to free probability, with all the needed preliminaries included. We first discuss the most basic noncommuting variables, namely the usual matrices, followed by the basic random matrices, and with a look into Lie groups too. Then we present, following Voiculescu, the main concepts and tools of free probability, notably with the various limiting theorems that can be obtained. We then go on a more technical discussion, featuring cumulants, functional transforms and group theory, on the correspondence between classical and free. Finally, we discuss matrix modeling questions for the various more specialized free laws and objects that can be imagined.
Parabolic Homotopy Colimits and Coxeter Descents
Let $G$ be a compact, connected, simply connected semisimple Lie group with Weyl group $W$ and simple reflections $S$. For a simplicial complex $\mathcal K$ on $S$, form the homotopy colimit $X_{\mathcal K}(G)=\operatorname*{hocolim}_{I\in\mathcal K}G/G_I$ of standard partial flag manifolds. We compute its integral homology. If $\operatorname{Des}_R(w)$ is the right descent set of $w\in W$ and $\ell(w)$ its Coxeter length, then $$ H_n(X_{\mathcal K}(G);\mathbb Z)\cong \bigoplus_{w\in W}\widetilde H_{n-2\ell(w)-1}(\mathcal K_{\operatorname{Des}_R(w)};\mathbb Z). $$ Thus the induced subcomplexes of $\mathcal K$ supply the topological data, while the Weyl group determines which subcomplex occurs and the Schubert-degree shift. The proof gives a chain-level splitting and an integral Morse reduction. We derive homotopy detection, duality and rigidity results, and recover polyhedral products, matroid--Tutte formulas, and the adjoint sphere as special cases.
Combinatorics of hyperplane arrangements and Witten zeta function at the origin
We introduce a new method that brings the combinatorics of hyperplane arrangements into the study of representation zeta functions of compact Lie groups. For the Witten zeta function $ζ_Φ(s)$ associated with a root system $Φ$, our method yields elegant formulas for $ζ_Φ(0)$ and $ζ_Φ'(0)$ in terms of the exponents of various parabolic subsystems of $Φ$. Such formulas do not appear to be readily accessible through the conventional analytic techniques in the literature. More generally, the method applies to a broad family of conical zeta functions, expressing these two special values through the Möbius function of the intersection poset of the associated hyperplane arrangement.
Torus actions on compactified braid varieties and polytopality of subword complexes
Every cluster variety admits an action of its cluster dilation group. We prove that, in the case of braid varieties for simple Lie groups, this action always extends to a regular action on each of the brick compactifications. We explore two applications of this result. First, we show that any closed Richardson variety admits a faithful action of a torus of rank the Kazhdan-Lusztig $d$-invariant, answering affirmatively a recent question of E. Gorsky--S. Kim--M. Sherman-Bennett. The same result holds for projected Richardson varieties. Second, we show that the braid variety is a torus if and only if for each of its brick compactifications, the polar dual of the moment polytope for this action realizes the corresponding subword complex. The braid words satisfying this property turn out to be precisely the double root free words of V. Pilaud and C. Stump. This provides a novel approach to the longstanding open question of the polytopality of spherical subword complexes asked by A. Knutson and E. Miller, and in particular gives infinite families of subword complexes admitting polytopal realizations in dimension higher than the rank of the corresponding Coxeter group. As a common consequence of these two applications, we classify all Bruhat intervals in finite crystallographic Coxeter groups which are isomorphic to face lattices of convex polytopes via certain double root free words.
Nilpotent Lie algebras obtained by ordered sets and Ricci solitons
Nilpotent Lie groups with left-invariant metrics provide nontrivial examples of Ricci solitons. Some typical examples are given by the class of two-step nilpotent Lie algebras obtained from simple directed graphs and the class of nilpotent Lie algebras obtained from finite acyclic quivers. In this paper, we generalize the construction of nilpotent Lie algebras that are algebraic Ricci solitons obtained from finite acyclic quivers. We use some special ordered sets to construct nilpotent Lie algebras, which can also be obtained from some special quivers with relations.
A transitively and antisymmetrically ordered set (or TAOS, for short) is a set together with a binary relation that is transitive and antisymmetric. Utilizing the concept of incidence algebras of TAOSs, we construct nilpotent Lie algebras. We modify the method introduced by Mizoguchi and Tamaru \cite{MR4941781} and use it to show that the nilpotent Lie algebras with arbitrarily high degrees of nilpotency obtained from some special finite transitively and antisymmetrically ordered sets, called array TAOSs, are algebraic Ricci solitons. We also give some generalizations of this result, which yield more nilpotent Lie algebras that are algebraic Ricci solitons. Moreover, the corresponding simply-connected nilpotent Lie groups admit left-invariant Ricci solitons.
The Rectangular Finite Free Heat Flow
We define and study the rectangular finite free heat flow, a dynamical system on polynomials that plays the role of the heat equation in the setting of rectangular finite free probability. We show several equivalent characterizations of the evolution (including PDE and gradient flow formulations), establish basic properties of the dynamics, and determine the asymptotic distributions of the polynomial roots in the long-time and high-degree limits. We also discuss connections with Calogero-Moser systems and Dunkl processes, and we show that the rectangular finite free heat flow describes the mean curvature expansion of a family of compact Lie group orbits.
${\mathrm{ASL}_n}(\mathbb Z)$ invariant random subsets of $\mathbb Z^n$
We classify measures on $\{0,1\}^{\mathbb{Z}^d}$, $d \geq 3$, the space of subsets of $\mathbb{Z}^d$, which are invariant under all affine special linear transformations. In other words, we classify simple point processes on $\mathbb{Z}^d$ whose law is invariant under affine special linear transformations.
We show that every such process is built from a random equivariant polynomial together with independent random sampling, a higher-order generalisation of the cut-and-project method: a random polynomial map is drawn from a distribution invariant under a natural action of $\mathrm{SL}_d(\mathbb{Z})$, each site is then retained independently with a probability determined by a measurable function of the polynomial's value, and the classical cut-and-project construction is recovered in the degree-one case. As a corollary, when the underlying $\mathbb{Z}^d$-action is weakly mixing the measure must be a convex combination of Bernoulli shifts, in the spirit of de Finetti's theorem on exchangeable processes. Our theorem also makes precise how the Howe--Moore theorem fails for the pair $(\mathrm{ASL}_d(\mathbb{Z}), \mathrm{SL}_d(\mathbb{Z}))$.
Motivated by this classification, we formulate a conjecture for $\mathrm{ASL}_d(\mathbb{R})$-invariant point processes on $\mathbb{R}^d$, predicting that any such set decomposes into a Poisson part and a quasicrystal part. The proofs rely on the interaction between the Host--Kra theory of characteristic factors, Zimmer's theory of dynamical cocycles of simple Lie groups, and the dynamics of $\mathrm{SL}_d(\mathbb{Z})$-actions on homogeneous spaces.
Large products of double cosets for symmetric subgroups
We consider the problem of classifying pairs $x,y \in G$ such that $K x K y K = G$ where $G$ is a simple compact connected Lie group and $K$ is a symmetric subgroup. We give a necessary condition on $x,y$ for all simply connected $G$, and a complete classification when $G = \operatorname{SU}(n)$ and any symmetric $K \subseteq G$ except the type AIII case $K \simeq \operatorname{S}(\operatorname{U}(p) \times \operatorname{U}(n-p))$ with $p \neq n/2$. We also present some applications of these results to gate decompositions in quantum computing.
Ramanujan Complexes from Unitary Groups over Number Fields
In this article, we construct new families of Ramanujan complexes with local structure distinct from all previously known examples. Our approach is based on unitary groups over number fields, more specifically on what we call super-definite unitary groups, that is definite unitary groups that are anisotropic modulo their center at a finite place. These arise naturally as groups of units in central division algebras with involution of the second kind.
Our first main result gives a general construction of infinite families of Ramanujan complexes associated with a super-definite unitary group $G$ over a totally real number field and a finite place $v_0$. The structure of the resulting complex is governed by the type of the Bruhat-Tits building at $v_0$. It includes new examples of type $A_n$ when $v_0$ is split, and novel families of type ${}^2\!A'_n$, ${}^2 \! A''_n$ (with $n$ even), $B$-$C_n$, ${}^2 \! B$-$C_n$ and $C$-$BC_n$ in the non-split case. This construction works uniformly across all ranks.
Since much of the motivation for constructing expander complexes comes from computer science, we investigate the algorithmic explicitness of our construction in the latter part of the paper, and provide an example in rank 5 where it becomes fully explicit. In particular, this example yields golden gates for the real Lie group $PU(5)$.

Let $G_{\mathbb{R}}$ be a Lie group of Hermitian type, and $L(λ)$ a highest weight Harish-Chandra module of $G_{\mathbb{R}}$ with highest weight $λ$. In this article, we exhibit a bijection between the set of connected Dynkin subdiagrams containing the noncompact simple root and the set of unitary highest weight modules $L(-wρ-ρ)$, where $ρ$ is half the sum of positive roots. We find that $L(-wρ-ρ)$ is unitary if and only if the Schubert variety $X(w)$ is smooth. We also give the cardinality of the set of unitary highest weight modules $L(-wρ-ρ)$ for each Kazhdan-Lusztig right cell.
Counting Homogeneous Einstein Metrics
We present an explicit upper bound on the number of isolated homogeneous Einstein metrics on compact homogeneous spaces whose isotropy representations consist of pairwise inequivalent irreducibles. This is the BKK bound of the corresponding system of Laurent polynomials and is found combinatorially by computing the volume of a polytope. Inspired by a connection with algebraic statistics, we describe this system's BKK discriminant in terms of the principal $A$-determinant of scalar curvature. As a consequence, we confirm the Finiteness Conjecture of Böhm--Wang--Ziller in special cases. In particular, we give a unified proof that it holds on all generalized Wallach spaces. Finally, using numerical algebraic geometry, we compute $G$-invariant Einstein metrics on low-dimensional full flag manifolds $G/T$, where $G$ is a compact simple Lie group and $T$ is a maximal torus.
A Higgs category for the cluster variety of triples of flags
The cluster variety of triples of flags (associated with a split simple Lie group of Dynkin type Delta) plays a key role in higher Teichmuller theory as developed by Fock-Goncharov, Jiarui Fei, Ian Le, ... and Goncharov-Shen. We refer to it as the basic triangle associated with Delta. In this paper, for simply laced Delta, we construct and study a Higgs category (in the sense of Yilin Wu) which we expect to categorify the basic triangle. This category is a certain exact dg category (in the sense of Xiaofa Chen) which is Frobenius and stably 2-Calabi-Yau. We show that it has indeed the expected cyclic group symmetry and that its derived category has the expected braid group symmetry. A key ingredient in our construction is a conjecture by Merlin Christ, whose proof occupies most of this paper. The proof is based on a new description of the Higgs category in terms of Gorenstein projective dg modules. Our techniques are in the spirit of Orlov in his work on triangulated categories of graded B-branes.
Maximal transitivity of the cactus group on standard Young tableaux
The action of the cactus group $C_n$ on Young tableaux of a given shape $λ$ goes back to Berenstein and Kirillov and arises naturally in the study of crystal bases and quantum integrable systems. We show that this action is $2$-transitive on standard Young tableaux of the shape $λ$ if and only if $λ$ is not self-transpose and not a single hook. Moreover, we show that in these cases, the image of the cactus group in the permutation group of standard Young tableaux is either the whole permutation group or the alternating group, and prove that both cases are possible for infinitely many $λ$ (though the alternating group is more frequent). As an application, this implies that the Galois group of solutions to the Bethe ansatz in the Gaudin model attached to the Lie group $GL_d$ is, in many cases, at least the alternating group. This also extends the results of Sottile and White on the multiple transitivity of the Galois group of Schubert calculus problems in Grassmannians to many new cases.

For any set $A$ of natural numbers with positive upper Banach density and any $k\geq 1$, we show the existence of an infinite set $B\subset{\mathbb N}$ and a shift $t\geq0$ such that $A-t$ contains all sums of $m$ distinct elements from $B$ for all $m\in\{1,\ldots,k\}$. This can be viewed as a density analog of Hindman's finite sums theorem. Our proof reveals the natural relationships among infinite sumsets, the dynamics underpinning arithmetic progressions, and homogeneous spaces of nilpotent Lie groups.

There has been some work in the literature on limit theorems for the trace of commutators for compact Lie groups. We revisit this from the perspective of combinatorial representation theory.
Probabilistic intersection theory in Riemannian homogeneous spaces
Let $M=G/H$ be a Riemannian homogeneous space, where $G$ is a compact Lie group with closed subgroup $H$. Classical intersection theory states that the de Rham cohomology ring of $M$ describes the signed count of intersection points of submanifolds $Y_1, \ldots, Y_s$ of $M$ in general position, when the codimensions add up to $\dim M$.
We introduce the probabilistic intersection ring $\mathrm{H}_{\mathbb E}(M)$, whose multiplication describes the unsigned count of intersection points, when the $Y_i$ are randomly moved by independent uniformly random elements of $G$. The probabilistic intersection ring $\mathrm{H}_{\mathbb E}(M)$ has the structure of a graded commutative and associative real Banach algebra. It is defined as a quotient of the ring of Grassmann zonoids of a fixed cotangent space $V$ of $M$. The latter was introduced by the authors in [Adv. Math. 402, 2022]. There is a close connection to valuations of convex bodies: $\mathrm{H}_{\mathbb E}(M)$ can be interpreted as a subspace of the space of translation invariant, even, continuous valuations on $V$, whose multiplication coincides with Alesker's multiplication for smooth valuations.
We describe the ring structure of the probabilistic intersection ring for spheres, real projective space and complex projective space, relying on Fu [J. Diff. Geo. 72(3), 2006] for the latter case. From this, we derive an interesting probabilistic intersection formula in complex projective space. Finally, we initiate the investigation of the probabilistic intersection ring for real Grassmannians, outlining the construction of a probabilistic version of Schubert Calculus.
Generalized Bäcklund-Darboux transformations for Coxeter-Toda systems on simple Lie groups
We derive the cluster structure on the conjugation quotient Coxeter double Bruhat cells of a simple Lie group from that on the double Bruhat cells of the corresponding adjoint Lie group given by Fock and Goncharov using the notion of amalgamation given by Fock and Goncharov, and Williams, thereby generalizing the construction developed by Gekhtman \emph{et al}. We will then use this cluster structure on the conjugation quotient Coxeter double Bruhat cells to construct generalized Bäcklund-Darboux transformations between two Coxeter-Toda systems on simple Lie groups in terms of cluster mutations, thereby generalizing the construction developed by Gekhtman \emph{et al}. We show that these generalized Bäcklund-Darboux transformations preserve Hamiltonian flows generated by the restriction of the trace function of any representation of the simple Lie group, from which we deduce that the family of Coxeter-Toda systems on a simple Lie group forms a single cluster integrable system. Finally, we also develop network formulations of the Coxeter-Toda Hamiltonians for the classical Lie groups, and use these network formulations to obtain combinatorial formulas for these Coxeter-Toda Hamiltonians.
Bialgebras, and Lie monoid actions in Morse and Floer theory, I
We introduce a new family of oriented manifolds with boundaries called the forest biassociahedra and forest bimultiplihedra, generalizing the standard biassociahedra. They are defined as moduli spaces of ascending-descending biforests and are expected to act as parameter spaces for operations defined on Morse and Floer chains in the context of compact Lie group actions.
We study the structure of their boundary, and derive some algebraic notions of ``$f$-bialgebras'', as well as related notions of bimodules, morphisms and categories. This allows us to state some conjectures describing compact Lie group actions on Morse and Floer chains, and on Fukaya categories.
