Inverse Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials of matroids under deletion
We provide a deletion formula for the inverse Kazhdan--Lusztig polynomial and the inverse $Z$-polynomial of a matroid. Our formulas provide analogues to the deletion formulas of Braden--Vysogorets for Kazhdan--Lusztig and $Z$-polynomials. We discuss several consequences, which include closed formulas and recursions for these invariants on uniform matroids, projective geometries, glued cycles, and arbitrary matroids of corank $2$. As a relevant application of our deletion formula, we show the existence of a matroid of rank $19$ which disproves a conjecture of Xie and Zhang concerning a real-rootedness property of inverse Kazhdan--Lusztig polynomials.
Matchings in Matroids over Abelian Groups, III
In an abelian group $G$, a \emph{matching} is a bijection $f\colon A\to B$ between finite subsets $A,B\subseteq G$ such that $a+f(a)\notin A$ for all $a\in A$. We say that $G$ has the \emph{matching property} if every pair of finite subsets $A,B\subseteq G$ with $|A|=|B|$ and $0\notin B$ admits such a matching. This paper develops matroidal analogues of classical results on group matchings. By embedding matroid ground sets in $G$, we introduce base matchings between matroid bases, recovering the group-theoretic setting in the uniform case, and derive structural and combinatorial criteria for their existence. Our methods blend techniques from matroid theory, group theory, and additive number theory. Our main focus is on paving matroids, a class conjectured to constitute asymptotically almost all matroids. We prove symmetric self-matchability for all paving matroids, extend asymmetric results via the hyperplane-nullity parameter, and connect stressed hyperplanes to matchability through relaxation, bridging paving and uniform matroids. This paper continues a line of research initiated in [3,4], yet is written to be self-contained and may be read independently.
Chow polynomials of simplicial posets with positive $h$-vector are real-rooted
We prove that a finite graded simplicial poset with a top element added has real-rooted Chow and augmented Chow polynomials whenever it has a positive $h$-vector. This class of posets include Cohen-Macaulay simplicial posets and in particular lattices of flats of uniform matroids.

Luis Ferroni and Alex Fink recently introduced a polytope of all unlabeled matroids of rank $r$ on $n$ elements, and they showed that the vertices of this polytope come from matroids that can be characterized by maximizing a sequence of valuative invariants. We prove that a number of the matroids that they conjectured to yield vertices indeed do (these include cycle matroids of complete graphs, projective geometries, and Dowling geometries), and we give additional examples (including truncations of cycle matroids of complete graphs, Bose-Burton geometries, and binary and free spikes with tips). We prove a special case of a conjecture of Ferroni and Fink by showing that direct sums of uniform matroids yield vertices of their polytope, and we prove a similar result for direct sums whose components are in certain restricted classes of extremal matroids.

Motivated by the $Z$-polynomials of matroids, Ferroni, Matherne, Stevens, and Vecchi introduced the inverse $Z$-polynomial of a matroid. In this paper, we prove several fundamental properties of the inverse $Z$-polynomial, including non-negativity and multiplicativity, and show that it is a valuative invariant. We also provide explicit formulas for the inverse $Z$-polynomials of uniform matroids and a broader class of matroids, namely sparse paving matroids, which include uniform matroids as a special case. Furthermore, we establish the unimodality and log-concavity of these polynomials in the case of sparse paving matroids. Based on the properties of the $Z$-polynomial, we conjecture that the coefficients of the inverse $Z$-polynomial are unimodal and log-concave.
The polytope of all $q$-rank functions
A $q$-rank function is a real-valued function defined on the subspace lattice that is non-negative, upper bounded by the dimension function, non-drecreasing, and satisfies the submodularity law. Each such function corresponds to the rank function of a $q$-polymatroid. In this paper, we identify these functions with points in a polytope. We show that this polytope contains no interior lattice points, implying that the points corresponding to $q$-matroids are among its vertices. We investigate several properties of convex combinations of two lattice points in this polytope, particularly in terms of independence, flats, and cyclic flats. Special attention is given to the convex combinations of paving and uniform $q$-matroids.
Wild generalised truncation of infinite matroids
For ${n \in \mathbb{N}}$, the $n$-truncation of a matroid $M$ of rank at least $n$ is the matroid whose bases are the $n$-element independent sets of $M$. One can extend this definition to negative integers by letting the $(-n)$-truncation be the matroid whose bases are all the sets that can be obtained by deleting $n$ elements of a base of $M$. If $M$ has infinite rank, then for distinct ${m,n \in \mathbb{Z}}$ the $m$-truncation and the $n$-truncation are distinct matroids.
Inspired by the work of Bowler and Geschke on infinite uniform matroids, we provide a natural definition of generalised truncations that encompasses the notions mentioned above. We call a generalised truncation wild if it is not an $n$-truncation for any ${n \in \mathbb{Z}}$ and we prove that, under Martin's Axiom, any finitary matroid of infinite rank and size of less than continuum admits ${2^{2^{\aleph_0}}}$ wild generalised truncations.

We decompose the indicator function of each $(a, b)$-Catalan matroid polytope as a weighted sum of indicator function of matroid polytopes that correspond to direct sums of uniform matroids. Catalan matroids lie in the interior of the convex hull of direct sums of uniform matroids in the polytope of all matroids introduced by Ferroni and Fink. Moreover, we describe combinatorially the coefficients of the convex combination of direct sums of uniform matroid corresponding to an $(a,b)$-Catalan matroid. In particular, this allows us to derive explicit formulas for arbitrary valuative invariants of $(a, b)$-Catalan matroids. Among other applications, we prove that $(a,b)$-Catalan matroids are Ehrhart positive, and we find formulas for the Kazhdan--Lusztig invariants of these matroids.
Symmetric Tensor Matroids, Dual Rigidity Matroids, and the Maximality Conjecture
Inspired by a recent result of Brakensiek et al. that symmetric tensor matroids and rigidity matroids are linked by matroid duality, we define abstract symmetric tensor matroids as a dual concept to abstract rigidity matroids and establish their basic properties. We then exploit this duality to obtain an alternative characterisation of the generic $d$-dimensional rigidity on $K_n$ for $n-d\leq 6$ to that given by Grasseger et al. Our results imply that Graver's maximality conjecture holds for these matroids. We also consider the related family of $K_{1,t+1}$-matroids on $K_n$ and show that this family has a unique maximal element only when $t\leq 3$. This implies that the family of second quasi symmetric powers of the uniform matroid $U_{t,n}$ does not have a unique maximal matroid if $t\geq 4$ and $n$ is sufficiently large.
Tensor Product of Polymatroids and Common Information
A new connection between two different necessary conditions for a polymatroid to be linearly representable is presented. Specifically, we prove that the existence of a tensor product with the uniform matroid of rank two on three elements implies the existence of a common information extension for every pair of subsets of the ground set.
Turán densities for matroid basis hypergraphs
Let $U$ be a uniform matroid. For all positive integers $n$ and $r$ with $n \ge r$, what is the maximum number of bases of an $n$-element, rank-$r$ matroid without $U$ as a minor? We show that this question arises by restricting the problem of determining the Turán number of a daisy hypergraph to the family of matroid basis hypergraphs. We then answer this question for several interesting choices of $U$.
Chow polynomials of uniform matroids are real-rooted
June Huh and Matthew Stevens conjectured that the Hilbert-Poincaré series of the Chow ring of any matroid is a polynomial with only real zeros. We prove this conjecture for the class of uniform matroids. We also prove that the Chow polynomial and the augmented Chow polynomial of any maximally ranked poset has only real zeros.

We introduce the notion of the free product of $q$-matroids, which is the $q$-analogue of the free product of matroids. We study the properties of this noncommutative binary operation, making an extensive use of the theory of cyclic flats. We show that the free product of two $q$-matroids $M_1$ and $M_2$ is maximal with respect to the weak order on $q$-matroids having $M_1$ as a restriction and $M_2$ as the complementary contraction. We characterise $q$-matroids that are irreducible with respect to the free product and we prove that the factorization of a $q$-matroid into a free product of irreducibles is unique up to isomorphism. We discuss the representability of the free product, with a particular focus on rank one uniform $q$-matroids and show that such a product is represented by clubs on the projective line.
Tor Groups of the Stanley-Reisner Ring of a Matroid
We introduce the Tor groups $ \mathop{Tor}_{\bullet}^{S_{\mathrm{M}}^{\circ}} \left( \mathbb{C}[Σ_{\mathrm{M}}], \mathbb{C} \right)_{\bullet} $ for a loopless matroid $\mathrm{M}$ as a way to study the extra relations occurring in the linear ideal of the Feichtner-Yuzvinsky presentation of the Chow ring $ A^{\bullet}(\mathrm{M}) $. This extends the definition of the Chow ring of a matroid since $ \mathop{Tor}_{0}^{S_{\mathrm{M}}^{\circ}} \left( \mathbb{C}[Σ_{\mathrm{M}}], \mathbb{C} \right)_{\bullet} \cong A^{\bullet}(\mathrm{M}) $. Our main tool in studying these groups is to recognize them as cohomology of the toric variety associated to the Bergman fan of the matroid. With this geometric approach, we show that these Tor groups fit into a long exact sequence arising from the matroidal flips of Adiprasito, Huh, and Katz, extending the short exact sequence in the case of Chow rings. Using this long exact sequence we give a recursive formula for the Hilbert series of the Tor algebra of a uniform matroid.

We provide explicit combinatorial formulas for the Chow polynomial and for the augmented Chow polynomial of uniform matroids, thereby proving a conjecture by Ferroni. These formulas refine existing formulas by Hampe and by Eur, Huh, and Larson, offering a combinatorial interpretation of the coefficients based on Schubert matroids. As a byproduct, we count Schubert matroids by rank, number of loops, and cogirth.
An algebraic interpretation of Eulerian polynomials, derangement polynomials, and beyond, via Gröbner methods
Motivated by the question of whether Chow polynomials of matroids have only real roots, this article revisits the known relationship between Eulerian polynomials and the Hilbert series of Chow rings of permutohedral varieties. This is done using a quadratic Gröbner basis associated to a new presentation of those rings, which is obtained by iterating the semi-small decomposition of Chow rings of matroids. This Gröbner basis can also be applied to compute certain principal ideals in these rings, and ultimately reestablish the known connection between derangement polynomials and the Hilbert series of Chow rings for corank 1 uniform matroids. More broadly, this approach enables us to express the Hilbert series of Chow rings for any uniform matroid as polynomials related to the ascent statistics on particular sets of inversion sequences.
Infinite log-concavity and higher order Turán inequality for the sequences of Speyer's $g$-polynomial of uniform matroids
Let $U_{n,d}$ be the uniform matroid of rank $d$ on $n$ elements. Denote by $g_{U_{n,d}}(t)$ the Speyer's $g$-polynomial of $U_{n,d}$. The Turán inequality and higher order Turán inequality are related to the Laguerre-Pólya ($\mathcal{L}$-$\mathcal{P}$) class of real entire functions, and the $\mathcal{L}$-$\mathcal{P}$ class has close relation with the Riemann hypothesis. The Turán type inequalities have received much attention. Infinite log-concavity is also a deep generalization of Turán inequality with different direction. In this paper, we mainly obtain the infinite log-concavity and the higher order Turán inequality of the sequence $\{g_{U_{n,d}}(t)\}_{d=1}^{n-1}$ for any $t>0$. In order to prove these results, we show that the generating function of $g_{U_{n,d}}(t)$, denoted $h_n(x;t)$, has only real zeros for $t>0$. Consequently, for $t>0$, we also obtain the $γ$-positivity of the polynomial $h_n(x;t)$, the asymptotical normality of $g_{U_{n,d}}(t)$, and the Laguerre inequalities for $g_{U_{n,d}}(t)$ and $h_n(x;t)$.

Let $U_{n,d}$ denote the uniform matroid of rank $d$ on $n$ elements. We obtain some recurrence relations satisfied by Speyer's $g$-polynomials $g_{U_{n,d}}(t)$ of $U_{n,d}$. Based on these recurrence relations, we prove that the polynomial $g_{U_{n,d}}(t)$ has only real zeros for any $n-1\geq d\geq 1$. Furthermore, we show that the coefficient of $g_{U_{n,[n/2]}}(t)$ is asymptotically normal by local and central limit theorems.
Bounds on the number of cells and the dimension of the Dressian
The {\em Dressian} of a matroid $M$ is the set of all valuations of $M$. This Dressian is the support of a polyhedral complex $\mathcal{Dr}(M)$ whose open cells correspond 1-1 with matroid subdivisions of the matroid polytope of $M$. We present upper bounds on the number of cells and the dimension of $\mathcal{Dr}(M)$. For matroids $M$ of rank $r\geq 3$ on $n$ elements we show that $$ \ln\#\mathcal{Dr}(M)\leq {\binom{n}{r}} O\left(\frac{\ln(n)^2}{n}\right)\text{ as }n\rightarrow\infty,\qquad\text{and}\qquad\dim \mathcal{Dr}(M)\leq {\binom{n}{r}}\frac{3}{n-r+3},$$ as well as some more detailed bounds that incorporate structural properties of such $M$. For uniform matroids $M=U(r,n)$, these upper bounds are comparable to lower bounds derived from valuations that are constructed from sparse paving matroids.
Representability of the direct sum of uniform q-matroids

There are many similarities between the theories of matroids and $q$-matroids. However, when dealing with the direct sum of $q$-matroids many differences arise. Most notably, it has recently been shown that the direct sum of representable $q$-matroids is not necessarily representable. In this work, we focus on the direct sum of uniform $q$-matroids. Using algebraic and geometric tools, together with the notion of cyclic flats of $q$-matroids, we show that this is always representable, by providing a representation over a sufficiently large field.
