We examine the non-symmetric Macdonald polynomials $E_λ(x;q,t)$ at $q=1$, as well as the more general permuted-basement Macdonald polynomials. When $q=1$, we show that $E_λ(x;1,t)$ is symmetric and independent of $t$ whenever $λ$ is a partition. Furthermore, we show that for general $λ$, this expression factors into a symmetric and a non-symmetric part, where the symmetric part is independent of $t$, while the non-symmetric part only depends on the relative order of the entries in $λ$.
We also examine the case $q=0$, which give rise to so called permuted-basement $t$-atoms. We prove expansion-properties of these, and as a corollary, prove that Demazure characters (key polynomials) expand positively into permuted-basement atoms. This complements the result that permuted-basement atoms are atom-positive. Finally, we show that a product of a permuted-basement atom and a Schur polynomial is again positive in the same permuted-basement atom basis, and thus interpolates between two results by Haglund, Luoto, Mason and van Willigenburg.
The common theme in this project is the application of basement-permuting operators as well as combinatorics on fillings, by applying results in a previous article by the first author.
The center of the twisted Heisenberg category, factorial Schur $Q$-functions, and transition functions on the Schur graph
We establish an isomorphism between the center of the twisted Heisenberg category and the subalgebra of the symmetric functions $Γ$ generated by odd power sums. We give a graphical description of the factorial Schur $Q$-functions as closed diagrams in the twisted Heisenberg category and show that the bubble generators of the center correspond to two sets of generators of $Γ$ which encode data related to up/down transition functions on the Schur graph. Finally, we describe an action of the trace of the twisted Heisenberg category, the $W$-algebra $W^-\subset W_{1+\infty}$, on $Γ$.
Kohnert polynomials

We associate a polynomial to any diagram of unit cells in the first quadrant of the plane using Kohnert's algorithm for moving cells down. In this way, for every weak composition one can choose a cell diagram with corresponding row-counts, with each choice giving rise to a combinatorially-defined basis of polynomials. These Kohnert bases provide a simultaneous generalization of Schubert polynomials and Demazure characters for the general linear group. Using the monomial and fundamental slide bases defined earlier by the authors, we show that Kohnert polynomials stabilize to quasisymmetric functions that are nonnegative on the fundamental basis for quasisymmetric functions. For initial applications, we define and study two new Kohnert bases. The elements of one basis are conjecturally Schubert-positive and stabilize to the skew-Schur functions; the elements of the other basis stabilize to a new basis of quasisymmetric functions that contains the Schur functions.

Symmetric Grothendieck polynomials are analogues of Schur polynomials in the K-theory of Grassmannians. We build dual families of symmetric Grothendieck polynomials using Schur operators. With this approach we prove skew Cauchy identity and then derive various applications: skew Pieri rules, dual filtrations of Young's lattice, generating series and enumerative identities. We also give a new explanation of the finite expansion property for products of Grothendieck polynomials.

Recently Tewari and van Willigenburg constructed modules of the 0-Hecke algebra that are mapped to the quasisymmetric Schur functions by the quasisymmetric characteristic and decomposed them into a direct sum of certain submodules. We show that these submodules are indecomposable by determining their endomorphism rings.
Shifted tableaux crystals
We introduce coplactic raising and lowering operators $E'_i$, $F'_i$, $E_i$, and $F_i$ on shifted skew semistandard tableaux. We show that the primed operators and unprimed operators each independently form type A Kashiwara crystals (but not Stembridge crystals) on the same underlying set and with the same weight functions. When taken together, the result is a new kind of `doubled crystal' structure that recovers the combinatorics of type B Schubert calculus: the highest-weight elements of our crystals are precisely the shifted Littlewood-Richardson tableaux, and their generating functions are the (skew) Schur $Q$-functions. We give local axioms for these crystals, which closely resemble the Stembridge axioms for type A. Finally, we give a new criterion for such tableaux to be ballot.
On cyclic descents for tableaux

The notion of descent set, for permutations as well as for standard Young tableaux (SYT), is classical. Cellini introduced a natural notion of {\em cyclic descent set} for permutations, and Rhoades introduced such a notion for SYT --- but only for rectangular shapes. In this work we define {\em cyclic extensions} of descent sets in a general context, and prove existence and essential uniqueness for SYT of almost all shapes. The proof applies nonnegativity properties of Postnikov's toric Schur polynomials, providing a new interpretation of certain Gromov-Witten invariants.

D. Grigoriev-G. Koshevoy recently proved that tropical Schur polynomials have (at worst) polynomial tropical semiring complexity. They also conjectured tropical skew Schur polynomials have at least exponential complexity; we establish a polynomial complexity upper bound. Our proof uses results about (stable) Schubert polynomials, due to R. P. Stanley and S. Billey-W. Jockusch-R. P. Stanley, together with a sufficient condition for polynomial complexity that is connected to the saturated Newton polytope property.

Let $\mathbb{N}$ denote the set of non-negative integers. Haglund, Wilson, and the second author have conjectured that the coefficient of any Schur function $s_λ[X]$ in $Δ_{e_k} e_n[X]$ is a polynomial in $\mathbb{N}[q,t]$. We present four proofs of a stronger statement in the case $k=2$; We show that the coefficient of any Schur function $s_λ[X]$ in $Δ_{e_2} e_n[X]$ has a positive expansion in terms of $q,t$-analogs.
Factorial characters of classical Lie groups and their combinatorial realisations
Just as the definition of factorial Schur functions as a ratio of determinants allows one to show that they satisfy a Jacobi-Trudi-type identity and have an explicit combinatorial realisation in terms of semistandard tableaux, so we offer here definitions of factorial irreducible characters of the classical Lie groups as ratios of determinants that share these two features. These factorial characters are each specified by a partition, $λ=(λ_1,λ_2,\ldots,λ_n)$, and in each case a flagged Jacobi-Trudi identity is derived that expresses the factorial character as a determinant of corresponding factorial characters specified by one-part partitions, $(m)$, for which we supply generating functions. These identities are established by manipulating determinants through the use of certain recurrence relations derived from these generating functions. The transitions to combinatorial realisations of the factorial characters in terms of tableaux are then established by means of non-intersecting lattice path models. The results apply to $gl(n)$, $so(2n+1)$, $sp(2n)$ and $o(2n)$, and are extended to the case of $so(2n)$ by making use of newly defined factorial difference characters.
Support Equalities Among Ribbon Schur Functions

In 2007, McNamara proved that two skew shapes can have the same Schur support only if they have the same number of $k\times \ell$ rectangles as subdiagrams. This implies that two ribbons can have the same Schur support only if one is obtained by permuting row lengths of the other. We present substantial progress towards classifying when a permutation $π\in S_m$ of row lengths of a ribbon $α$ produces a ribbon $α_π$ with the same Schur support as $α$; when this occurs for all $π\in S_m$, we say that $α$ has "full equivalence class." Our main results include a sufficient condition for a ribbon $α$ to have full equivalence class. Additionally, we prove a separate necessary condition, which we conjecture to be sufficient.
Prism tableaux for alternating sign matrix varieties
A prism tableau is a set of reverse semistandard tableaux, each positioned within an ambient grid. Prism tableaux were introduced to provide a formula for the Schubert polynomials of A. Lascoux and M.P. Schützenberger. This formula directly generalizes the well known expression for Schur polynomials as a sum over semistandard tableaux. Alternating sign matrix varieties generalize the matrix Schubert varieties of W. Fulton. We use prism tableaux to give a formula for the multidegree of an alternating sign matrix variety.
On the sign patterns of entrywise positivity preservers in fixed dimension

Given $I\subset\mathbb{C}$ and an integer $N>0$, a function $f:I\to\mathbb{C}$ is entrywise positivity preserving on positive semidefinite (p.s.d.) matrices $A=(a_{jk})\in I^{N\times N}$, if the entrywise application $f[A]=(f(a_{jk}))$ of $f$ to $A$ is p.s.d. for all such $A$. Such preservers in all dimensions have been classified by Schoenberg and Rudin as being absolutely monotonic [Duke Math. J. 1942, 1959]. In fixed dimension $N$, results akin to work of Horn and Loewner [Trans. AMS 1969] show the first $N$ nonzero Maclaurin coefficients of a positivity preserver $f$ are positive; and the last $N$ coefficients are also positive if $I$ is unbounded. However, little was known about the other coefficients: the only examples to date for unbounded domains $I$ were absolutely monotonic, so work in all dimensions; and for bounded $I$ examples of non-absolutely monotonic preservers were very few (and recent).
In this paper, we completely characterize the sign patterns of the Maclaurin coefficients of positivity preservers in fixed dimension $N$, over bounded and unbounded domains $I$. In particular, the above Horn-type conditions cannot be improved upon. This also yields the first polynomials which preserve positivity on p.s.d. matrices in $I^{N\times N}$ but not in $I^{(N+1)\times (N+1)}$. We obtain analogous results for real exponents using the Harish-Chandra-Itzykson-Zuber formula.
We then go from qualitative bounds, which suffice to understand all possible sign patterns, to exact quantitative bounds. As an application, we extend our previous qualitative and quantitative results to understand preservers of total non-negativity in fixed dimension - including their sign patterns. We deduce several further applications, including extending a Schur polynomial conjecture by Cuttler-Greene-Skandera to obtain a novel characterization of weak majorization for real tuples.

Let $V$ be a finite-dimensional representation of the complex circle $\mathbb{C}^\times$ determined by a weight vector $\mathbf{a}\in\mathbb{Z}^n$. We study the Hilbert series $\operatorname{Hilb}_{\mathbf{a}}(t)$ of the graded algebra $\mathbb{C}[V]^{\mathbb{C}_{\mathbf{a}}^\times}$ of polynomial $\mathbb{C}^\times$-invariants in terms of the weight vector $\mathbf{a}$ of the $\mathbb{C}^\times$-action. In particular, we give explicit formulas for $\operatorname{Hilb}_{\mathbf{a}}(t)$ as well as the first four coefficients of the Laurent expansion of $\operatorname{Hilb}_{\mathbf{a}}(t)$ at $t=1$. The naive formulas for these coefficients have removable singularities when weights pairwise coincide. Identifying these cancelations, the Laurent coefficients are expressed using partial Schur polynomial that are independently symmetric in two sets of variables. We similarly give an explicit formula for the $a$-invariant of $\mathbb{C}[V]^{\mathbb{C}_{\mathbf{a}}^\times}$ in the case that this algebra is Gorenstein. As an application, we give methods to identify weight vectors with Gorenstein and non-Gorenstein invariant algebras.

We give a new characterization of Littlewood-Richardson-Stembridge tableaux for Schur $P$-functions by using the theory of $\mf{q}(n)$-crystals. We also give alternate proofs of the Schur $P$-expansion of a skew Schur function due to Ardila and Serrano, and the Schur expansion of a Schur $P$-function due to Stembridge using the associated crystal structures.

We prove a combinatorial formula for Macdonald cumulants which generalizes the celebrated formula of Haglund for Macdonald polynomials. We provide several applications of our formula. Firstly, it gives a new, constructive proof of a strong factorization property of Macdonald polynomials proven recently by the author of this paper. Moreover it proves that Macdonald cumulants are $q,t$--positive in the monomial and in the fundamental quasisymmetric bases. Furthermore, we use our formula to prove the recent higher-order Macdonald positivity conjecture for the coefficients of the Schur polynomials indexed by hooks. Our combinatorial formula relates Macdonald cumulants to the generating function of $G$-parking functions, or equivalently to a certain specialization of the Tutte polynomials.

We give new product formulas for the number of standard Young tableaux of certain skew shapes and for the principal evaluation of the certain Schubert polynomials. These are proved by utilizing symmetries for evaluations of factorial Schur functions, extensively studied in the first two papers in the series "Hook formulas for skew shapes" [arxiv:1512.08348, arxiv:1610.04744]. We also apply our technology to obtain determinantal and product formulas for the partition function of certain weighted lozenge tilings, and give various probabilistic and asymptotic applications.

We establish a poset structure on combinatorial bases of multivariate polynomials defined by positive expansions, and study properties common to bases in this poset. Included are the well-studied bases of Schubert polynomials, Demazure characters and Demazure atoms; the quasi-key, fundamental and monomial slide bases introduced in 2017 by Assaf and the author; and a new basis we introduce completing this poset structure. We show the product of a Schur polynomial and an element of a basis in this poset expands positively in that basis; in particular, we give the first Littlewood-Richardson rule for the product of a Schur polynomial and a quasi-key polynomial. This rule simultaneously extends Haglund, Luoto, Mason and van Willigenburg's (2011) Littlewood-Richardson rule for quasi-Schur polynomials and refines their Littlewood-Richardson rule for Demazure characters. We also establish bijections connecting combinatorial models for these polynomials including semi-skyline fillings and quasi-key tableaux.

The orbits of the symplectic group acting on the type A flag variety are indexed by the fixed-point-free involutions in a finite symmetric group. The cohomology classes of the closures of these orbits have polynomial representatives $\hat{\mathfrak{S}}^{\tt{FPF}}_z$ akin to Schubert polynomials. We show that the fixed-point-free involution Stanley symmetric functions $\hat{F}^{\tt{FPF}}_z$, which are stable limits of the polynomials $\hat{\mathfrak{S}}^{\tt{FPF}}_z$, are Schur $P$-positive. To do so, we construct an analogue of the Lascoux-Schützenberger tree, an algebraic recurrence that computes Schubert polynomials. As a byproduct of our proof, we obtain a Pfaffian formula of geometric interest for $\hat{\mathfrak{S}}^{\tt{FPF}}_z$ when $z$ is a fixed-point-free version of a Grassmannian permutation. We also classify the fixed-point-free involution Stanley symmetric functions that are single Schur $P$-functions, and show that the decomposition of $\hat{F}^{\tt{FPF}}_z$ into Schur $P$-functions is unitriangular with respect to dominance order on strict partitions. These results and proofs mirror previous work by the authors related to the orthogonal group action on the type A flag variety.

Cylindric skew Schur functions, a generalization of skew Schur functions, are closely related to the famous problem finding a combinatorial formula for the 3-point Gromov-Witten invariants of Grassmannian. In this paper, we prove cylindric Schur positivity of the cylindric skew Schur functions, conjectured by McNamara. We also show that all coefficients appearing in the expansion are the same as $3$-point Gromov-Witten invariants. We start discussing properties of affine Stanley symmetric functions for general affine permutations and $321$-avoiding affine permutations, and explain how these functions are related to cylindric skew Schur functions. We also provide an effective algorithm to compute the expansion of the cylindric skew Schur functions in terms of the cylindric Schur functions, and the expansion of affine Stanley symmetric functions in terms of affine Schur functions.
