Local algorithms for coplactic switching and evacuation of Young tableaux
Tableau switching is a well studied bijection on pairs of skew Young tableaux which swaps their relative positions. This is achieved by successively sliding the entries of the inner tableaux through the outer one via jeu de taquin (JDT) slides. Tableau coswitching is a similar but coplactic operation, meaning it commutes with any sequence of JDT slides. Coswitching is defined by first performing JDT rectification on the union of the tableaux, switching the resulting pair, then unrectifying the union. This definition requires us to perform large scale modifications to the skew shapes during the rectification and unrectification steps, which is both computationally taxing and obscures the effect of coswitching on the pair of skew tableaux. In previous work, Gillespie and Levinson define an algorithm which computes coswitching as a sequence of local moves, which do not alter the skew shapes of the tableaux, when one of the tableaux is a single box. In this paper, we extend the results of Gillespie and Levinson (and Gillespie, Levinson, and Purbhoo for type B) to the case the two skew tableaux are of arbitrary size. We also describe multiple bijections on tableaux, each descending to the evacuation shuffling (esh) operation on pairs of dual equivalence classes. We show how special cases of our local algorithm compute the Schützenberger involution on skew tableaux, as well as the wall-crossing and monodromy of certain covering spaces of the moduli space $\overline{M}_{0, r}(\mathbb{R})$.

Crystal Chute Moves on Pipe Dreams
Published • View Publication • BIB
Schubert polynomials represent a basis for the cohomology of the complete flag variety and thus play a central role in geometry and combinatorics. In this context, Schubert polynomials are generating functions over various combinatorial objects, such as rc-graphs or reduced pipe dreams. By restricting Bergeron and Billey's chute moves on rc-graphs, we define a Demazure crystal structure on the monomials of a Schubert polynomial. As a consequence, we provide a method for decomposing Schubert polynomials as sums of key polynomials, complementing related work of Assaf and Schilling via reduced factorizations with cutoff, as well as Lenart's coplactic operators on biwords.

Shifted tableaux crystals
We introduce coplactic raising and lowering operators $E'_i$, $F'_i$, $E_i$, and $F_i$ on shifted skew semistandard tableaux. We show that the primed operators and unprimed operators each independently form type A Kashiwara crystals (but not Stembridge crystals) on the same underlying set and with the same weight functions. When taken together, the result is a new kind of `doubled crystal' structure that recovers the combinatorics of type B Schubert calculus: the highest-weight elements of our crystals are precisely the shifted Littlewood-Richardson tableaux, and their generating functions are the (skew) Schur $Q$-functions. We give local axioms for these crystals, which closely resemble the Stembridge axioms for type A. Finally, we give a new criterion for such tableaux to be ballot.

Richard Stanley through a crystal lens and from a random angle
Published in in: The Mathematical Legacy of Richard P. Stanley, AMS 2016, edited by P. Hersh, T. Lam, P. Pylyavskyy, V. Reiner, pp. 287-299 • View Publication • BIB
We review Stanley's seminal work on the number of reduced words of the longest element of the symmetric group and his Stanley symmetric functions. We shed new light on this by giving a crystal theoretic interpretation in terms of decreasing factorizations of permutations. Whereas crystal operators on tableaux are coplactic operators, the crystal operators on decreasing factorization intertwine with the Edelman-Greene insertion. We also view this from a random perspective and study a Markov chain on reduced words of the longest element in a finite Coxeter group, in particular the symmetric group, and mention a generalization to a poset setting.

A Unified Approach to Combinatorial Formulas for Schubert Polynomials
Published • View Publication • BIB
Schubert polynomials were introduced in the context of the geometry of flag varieties. This paper investigates some of the connections not yet understood between several combinatorial structures for the construction of Schubert polynomials; we also present simplifications in some of the existing approaches to this area. We designate certain line diagrams known as rc-graphs as the main structure. The other structures in the literature we study include: semistandard Young tableaux, Kohnert diagrams, and balanced labelings of the diagram of a permutation. The main tools in our investigation are certain operations on rc-graphs, which correspond to the coplactic operations on tableaux, and thus define a crystal graph structure on rc-graphs; a new definition of these operations is presented. One application of these operations is a straightforward, purely combinatorial proof of a recent formula (due to Buch, Kresch, Tamvakis, and Yong), which expresses Schubert polynomials in terms of products of Schur polynomials. In spite of the fact that it refers to many objects and results related to them, the paper is mostly self-contained.

Lie Elements and Knuth Relations
Published in Canadian J. Math. 56 (2004), No. 4, 871-882 • View Publication • BIB
A coplactic class in the symmetric group S_n consists of all permutations in S_n with a given Schensted Q-symbol, and may be described in terms of local relations introduced by Knuth. Any Lie element in the group algebra of S_n which is constant on coplactic classes is already constant on descent classes. As a consequence, the intersection of the Lie convolution algebra introduced by Patras and Reutenauer and the coplactic algebra introduced by Poirier and Reutenauer is the Solomon descent algebra.

Some bijective correspondences involving domino tableaux
Published • View Publication • BIB
We define a number of new combinatorial operations on skew semistandard domino tableaux, which together with constructions introduced earlier by C. Carre and B. Leclerc, define an elegant structure on the set of these tableaux, that closely parallels the structure defined in [math.CO/9908099] for ordinary skew semistandard tableaux, that is related to the Littlewood-Richardson rule. These operations are: (1) a bijection between semistandard domino tableaux and certain pairs of ordinary tableaux of the same weight that together fill the same shape; (2) a weight preserving transformation of domino tableaux to ordinary tableaux of a related shape (the correspondence involves 2-quotients) with the property that Yamanouchi domino tableaux correspond precisely to Littlewood-Richardson tableaux; (3) a correspondence between Yamanouchi domino tableaux of shape $λ$ and weight $μ$ and Yamanouchi domino tableaux of shape $μ'$ and weight $λ$, where $μ'$ is $μ$ scaled by a factor 2. The property at the heart of the structure so defined is that operations (1) and (2) commute with the coplactic operations (implicitly) defined by Carre and Leclerc. (1) elucidates their bijection analogous to that of Robinson (a.k.a. the Robinson-Schensted correspondence), while the operation of moving chains in domino tableaux underlying (2) is very similar to jeu de taquin.

The Littlewood-Richardson rule, and related combinatorics
An introduction is given to the Littlewood-Richardson rule, and various combinatorial constructions related to it. We present a proof based on tableau switching, dual equivalence, and coplactic operations. We conclude with a section relating these fairly modern techniques to earlier work on the Littlewood-Richardson rule.
