Composition Tableaux basis for Schur functors and the Plücker algebra
We show that combinatorial objects called row-strict composition tableaux, introduced by Mason and Remmel in 2014 and closely related to the quasi-symmetric Schur functions of Haglund-Luoto-Mason-van Willigenburg, form a basis for Schur functors of finite free modules over arbitrary commutative rings. When the ring is the complex numbers, this produces a new basis for the irreducible polynomial representations of $\operatorname{GL}_n(\mathbb{C})$. Moreover, in this case it also produces new basis for the Plücker algebra, a subalgebra of the polynomial ring over $\mathbb{C}$ in $n^2$ variables, which is of independent combinatorial and geometric interests. As an aside we also show that these results hold for other combinatorial objects called reverse row strict tableau.

Restricting Schubert classes to symplectic Grassmannians using self-dual puzzles
Given a Schubert class on $Gr(k,V)$ where $V$ is a symplectic vector space of dimension $2n$, we consider its restriction to the symplectic Grassmannian $SpGr(k,V)$ of isotropic subspaces. Pragacz gave tableau formulae for positively computing the expansion of these $H^*(Gr(k,V))$ classes into Schubert classes of the target when $k=n$, which corresponds to expanding Schur polynomials into $Q$-Schur polynomials. Coskun described an algorithm for their expansion when $k\leq n$. We give a puzzle-based formula for these expansions, while extending them to equivariant cohomology. We make use of a new observation that usual Grassmannian puzzle pieces are already enough to do some $2$-step Schubert calculus, and apply techniques from quantum integrable systems (``scattering diagrams'').
Cyclic quasi-symmetric functions
Published • View Publication • BIB
The ring of cyclic quasi-symmetric functions and its non-Escher subring are introduced in this paper. A natural basis consists of fundamental cyclic quasi-symmetric functions; for the non-Escher subring they arise as toric $P$-partition enumerators, for toric posets $P$ with a total cyclic order. The associated structure constants are determined by cyclic shuffles of permutations. We then prove the following positivity phenomenon: for every non-hook shape $λ$, the coefficients in the expansion of the Schur function $s_λ$ in terms of fundamental cyclic quasi-symmetric functions are nonnegative. The proof relies on the existence of a cyclic descent map on the standard Young tableaux (SYT) of shape $λ$. The theory has applications to the enumeration of cyclic shuffles and SYT by cyclic descents.
$k$-Schur expansions of Catalan functions
Published • View Publication • BIB
We make a broad conjecture about the $k$-Schur positivity of Catalan functions, symmetric functions which generalize the (parabolic) Hall-Littlewood polynomials. We resolve the conjecture with positive combinatorial formulas in cases which address the $k$-Schur expansion of (1) Hall-Littlewood polynomials, proving the $q=0$ case of the strengthened Macdonald positivity conjecture of Lapointe, Lascoux, and Morse; (2) the product of a Schur function and a $k$-Schur function when the indexing partitions concatenate to a partition, describing a class of Gromov-Witten invariants for the quantum cohomology of complete flag varieties; (3) $k$-split polynomials, proving a substantial case of a problem of Broer and Shimozono-Weyman on parabolic Hall-Littlewood polynomials. In addition, we prove the conjecture that $k$-Schur functions defined in terms of $k$-split polynomials agree with strong tableau $k$-Schur functions.

Bumpless Pipedreams, Reduced Word Tableaux and Stanley Symmetric Functions
Lam, Lee and Shimozono introduced the structure of bumpless pipedreams in their study of back stable Schubert calculus. They found that a specific family of bumpless pipedreams, called EG-pipedreams, can be used to interpret the Edelman-Greene coefficients appearing in the expansion of a Stanley symmetric function in the basis of Schur functions. It is well known that the Edelman-Greene coefficients can also be interpreted in terms of reduced word tableaux for permutations. Lam, Lee and Shimozono proposed the problem of finding a shape preserving bijection between reduced word tableaux for a permutation $w$ and EG-pipedreams of $w$. In this paper, we construct such a bijection. The key ingredients are two new developed isomorphic tree structures associated to $w$: the modified Lascoux-Schützenberger tree of $w$ and the Edelman-Greene tree of $w$. Using the Little map, we show that the leaves in the modified Lascoux-Schützenberger of $w$ are in bijection with the reduced word tableaux for $w$. On the other hand, applying the droop operation on bumpless pipedreams also introduced by Lam, Lee and Shimozono, we show that the leaves in the Edelman-Greene tree of $w$ are in bijection with the EG-pipedreams of $w$. This allows us to establish a shape preserving one-to-one correspondence between reduced word tableaux for $w$ and EG-pipedreams of $w$.

The genomic Schur function is fundamental-positive
Published in Annals of Combinatorics 24, no. 1, 2020, 95-108 • View Publication • BIB
In work with A. Yong, the author introduced genomic tableaux to prove the first positive combinatorial rule for the Littlewood-Richardson coefficients in torus-equivariant $K$-theory of Grassmannians. We then studied the genomic Schur function $U_λ$, a generating function for such tableaux, showing that it is non-trivially a symmetric function, although generally not Schur-positive. Here we show that $U_λ$ is, however, positive in the basis of fundamental quasisymmetric functions. We give a positive combinatorial formula for this expansion in terms of gapless increasing tableaux; this is, moreover, the first finite expression for $U_λ$. Combined with work of A. Garsia and J. Remmel, this yields a compact combinatorial (but necessarily non-positive) formula for the Schur expansion of $U_λ$.

Plethysms of symmetric functions and highest weight representations
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $s_ν\circ s_μ$ denote the plethystic product of the Schur functions $s_ν$ and $s_μ$. In this article we define an explicit polynomial representation corresponding to $s_ν\circ s_μ$ with basis indexed by certain `plethystic' semistandard tableaux. Using these representations we prove generalizations of four results on plethysms due to Bruns--Conca--Varbaro, Brion, Ikenmeyer and the authors. In particular, we give a sufficient condition for the multiplicity $\langle s_ν\circ s_μ, s_λ\rangle$ to be stable under insertion of new parts into $μ$ and $λ$. We also characterize all maximal and minimal partitions $λ$ in the dominance order such that $s_λ$ appears in $s_ν\circ s_μ$ and determine the corresponding multiplicities using plethystic semistandard tableaux.

Random polymers via orthogonal Whittaker and symplectic Schur functions
This thesis deals with some $(1+1)$-dimensional lattice path models from the KPZ universality class: the directed random polymer with inverse-gamma weights (known as log-gamma polymer) and its zero temperature degeneration, i.e. the last passage percolation model, with geometric or exponential waiting times. We consider three path geometries: point-to-line, point-to-half-line, and point-to-line with paths restricted to stay in a half-plane. Through exact formulas, we establish new connections between integrable probabilistic models and the ubiquitous Whittaker and Schur functions. More in detail, via the use of A. N. Kirillov's geometric Robinson-Schensted-Knuth (RSK) correspondence, we compute the Laplace transform of the polymer partition functions in the above geometries in terms of orthogonal Whittaker functions. In the case of the first two geometries we also provide multiple contour integral formulas. For the corresponding last passage percolation problems, we obtain new formulas in terms of symplectic Schur functions, both directly via RSK on polygonal arrays and via zero temperature limit from the log-gamma polymer formulas. As scaling limits of the point-to-line and point-to-half-line models with exponential waiting times, we derive Sasamoto's Fredholm determinant formula for the GOE Tracy-Widom distribution, as well as the one-point marginal distribution of the ${\rm Airy}_{2\to1}$ process.

Classifying the near-equality of ribbon Schur functions
Published in European J. of Combin. 90 (2020) • View Publication • BIB
We consider the problem of determining when the difference of two ribbon Schur functions is a single Schur function. We fully classify the five infinite families of pairs of ribbon Schur functions whose difference is a single Schur function with corresponding partition having at most two parts at least $2$. We also prove an identity for differences of ribbon Schur functions and we determine some necessary conditions for such a difference to be Schur-positive, depending on the distribution of $1$'s and the end row lengths.

What is Schur positivity and how common is it?
Published • View Publication • BIB
This is a short note about Schur positivity. We introduce Schur polynomials and explain how they appear in the representation theory of the general linear group. We end with a new result of the author with F. Bergeron and V. Reiner that gives the probability that a homogeneous symmetric polynomial with positive coefficients is Schur positive.

Generalized Staircase Tableaux: Symmetry and Applications
We define a number of related combinatorial objects, each of which possesses a surprising symmetry. We include several applications such as a combinatorial explanation for certain fixed points of the involution $ω$ on the ring of symmetric functions, as well as a relationship between certain skew Schur functions and skew $Q$-Schur functions. We give a $t$-deformation of these $Q$-Schur functions, and show that it is Schur positive, including a combinatorial description of the Schur coefficients. A corollary of our results is the equality of skew $Q$-Schur functions: $Q_{λ+δ/μ+ δ}=Q_{λ'+δ/μ' + δ}$ for $μ\subseteq λ$ and $δ=(n,\ldots,1)$ for some $n > l(λ)$.

Smooth entrywise positivity preservers, a Horn-Loewner master theorem, and symmetric function identities
Published in Transactions of the American Mathematical Society 375 (2022), no. 3, 2217-2236 • View Publication • BIB
A special case of a fundamental result of Loewner and Horn [Trans. Amer. Math. Soc. 1969] says that given an integer $n \geq 1$, if the entrywise application of a smooth function $f : (0,\infty) \to \mathbb{R}$ preserves the set of $n \times n$ positive semidefinite matrices with positive entries, then $f$ and its first $n-1$ derivatives are non-negative on $(0,\infty)$. In a recent joint work with Belton-Guillot-Putinar [J. Eur. Math. Soc., in press], we proved a stronger version, and used it to strengthen the Schoenberg-Rudin characterization of dimension-free positivity preservers [Duke Math. J. 1942, 1959]. In recent works with Belton-Guillot-Putinar [Adv. Math. 2016] and with Tao [Amer. J. Math., in press] we used local, real-analytic versions at the origin of the Horn-Loewner condition, and discovered unexpected connections between entrywise polynomials preserving positivity and Schur polynomials. In this paper, we unify these two stories via a Master Theorem (Theorem A) which (i) simultaneously unifies and extends all of the aforementioned variants; and (ii) proves the positivity of the first $n$ nonzero Taylor coefficients at individual points rather than on all of $(0,\infty)$. A key step in the proof is a new determinantal / symmetric function calculation (Theorem B), which shows that Schur polynomials arise naturally from considering arbitrary entrywise maps that are sufficiently differentiable. Of independent interest may be the following application to symmetric function theory: we extend the Schur function expansion of Cauchy's (1841) determinant (whose matrix entries are geometric series $1 / (1 - u_j v_k)$), as well as of a determinant of Frobenius [J. reine angew. Math. 1882] (whose matrix entries are a sum of two geometric series), to arbitrary power series, and over all commutative rings.

Large deviations and one-sided scaling limit of randomized multicolor box-ball system
Published • View Publication • BIB
The basic $κ$-color box-ball (BBS) system is an integrable cellular automaton on one dimensional lattice whose local states take $\{0,1,\cdots,κ\}$ with $0$ regarded as an empty box. The time evolution is defined by a combinatorial rule of quantum group theoretical origin, and the complete set of conserved quantities is given by a $κ$-tuple of Young diagrams. In the randomized BBS, a probability distribution on $\{0,1,\cdots,κ\}$ to independently fill the consecutive $n$ sites in the initial state induces a highly nontrivial probability measure on the $κ$-tuple of those invariant Young diagrams. In a recent work \cite{kuniba2018randomized}, their large $n$ `equilibrium shape' has been determined in terms of Schur polynomials by a Markov chain method and also by a very different approach of Thermodynamic Bethe Ansatz (TBA). In this paper, we establish a large deviations principle for the row lengths of the invariant Young diagrams. As a corollary, they are shown to converge almost surely to the equilibrium shape at an exponential rate. We also refine the TBA analysis and obtain the exact scaling form of the vacancy, the row length and the column multiplicity, which exhibit nontrivial factorization in a one-parameter specialization.

An orthosymplectic Pieri rule
Published in Electron. J. Comb. Vol 25, Issue 3 (2018), Paper #P3.37 • View Publication • BIB
The classical Pieri formula gives a combinatorial rule for decomposing the product of a Schur function and a complete homogeneous symmetric polynomial as a linear combination of Schur functions with integer coefficients. We give a Pieri rule for describing the product of an orthosymplectic character and an orthosymplectic character arising from a one-row partition. We establish that the orthosymplectic Pieri rule coincides with Sundaram's Pieri rule for symplectic characters and that orthosymplectic characters and symplectic characters obey the same product rule.

Families of major index distributions: closed forms and unimodality
Published • View Publication • BIB
Closed forms for $f_{λ,i} (q) := \sum_{τ\in SYT(λ) : des(τ) = i} q^{maj(τ)}$, the distribution of the major index over standard Young tableaux of given shapes and specified number of descents, are established for a large collection of $λ$ and $i$. Of particular interest is the family that gives a positive answer to a question of Sagan and collaborators. All formulas established in the paper are unimodal, most by a result of Kirillov and Reshetikhin. Many can be identified as specializations of Schur functions via the Jacobi-Trudi identities. If the number of arguments is sufficiently large, it is shown that any finite principal specialization of any Schur function $s_λ(1,q,q^2,\dots,q^{n-1})$ has a combinatorial realization as the distribution of the major index over a given set of tableaux.

Theta and eta polynomials in geometry, Lie theory, and combinatorics
Published • View Publication • BIB
The classical Schur polynomials form a natural basis for the ring of symmetric polynomials, and have geometric significance since they represent the Schubert classes in the cohomology ring of Grassmannians. Moreover, these polynomials enjoy rich combinatorial properties. In the last decade, an exact analogue of this picture has emerged in the symplectic and orthogonal Lie types, with the Schur polynomials replaced by the theta and eta polynomials of Buch, Kresch, and the author. This expository paper gives an overview of what is known to date about this correspondence, with examples.

A cornucopia of quasi-Yamanouchi tableaux
Published • View Publication • BIB
Quasi-Yamanouchi tableaux are a subset of semistandard Young tableaux and refine standard Young tableaux. They are closely tied to the descent set of standard Young tableaux and were introduced by Assaf and Searles to tighten Gessel's fundamental quasisymmetric expansion of Schur functions. The descent set and descent statistic of standard Young tableaux repeatedly prove themselves useful to consider, and as a result, quasi-Yamanouchi tableaux make appearances in many ways outside of their original purpose. Some examples, which we present in this paper, include the Schur expansion of Jack polynomials, the decomposition of Foulkes characters, and the bigraded Frobenius image of the coinvariant algebra. While it would be nice to have a product formula enumeration of quasi-Yamanouchi tableaux in the way that semistandard and standard Young tableaux do, it has previously been shown by the author that there is little hope on that front. The goal of this paper is to address a handful of the numerous alternative enumerative approaches. In particular, we present enumerations of quasi-Yamanouchi tableaux using $q$-hit numbers, semistandard Young tableaux, weighted lattice paths, and symmetric polynomials, as well as the fundamental quasisymmetric and monomial quasisymmetric expansions of their Schur generating function.

Noncommutative Shifted Symmetric Functions
Published in Moscow Mathematical Journal, Volume 20, Issue 1, January--March 2020 pp. 93--126 • View Publication • BIB
We introduce a ring of noncommutative shifted symmetric functions based on an integer-indexed sequence of shift parameters. Using generating series and quasideterminants, this multiparameter approach produces deformations of the ring of noncommutative symmetric functions. Shifted versions of ribbon Schur functions are defined and form a basis for the ring. Further, we produce analogues of Jacobi-Trudi and Nägelsbach-Kostka formulas, a duality anti-algebra isomorphism, shifted quasi-Schur functions, and Giambelli's formula in this setup. In addition, an analogue of power sums is provided, satisfying versions of Wronski and Newton formulas. Finally, a realization of these noncommutative shifted symmetric functions as rational functions in noncommuting variables is given. These realizations have a shifted symmetry under exchange of the variables and are well-behaved under extension of the list of variables.

Linear relations on LLT polynomials and their k-Schur positivity for k=2
Published • View Publication • BIB
LLT polynomials are $q$-analogues of product of Schur functions that are known to be Schur-positive by Grojnowski and Haiman. However, there is no known combinatorial formula for the coefficients in the Schur expansion. Finding such a formula also provides Schur positivity of Macdonald polynomials. On the other hand, Haiman and Hugland conjectured that LLT polynomials for skew partitions lying on $k$ adjacent diagonals are $k$-Schur positive, which is much stronger than Schur positivity. In this paper, we prove the conjecture for $k=2$ by analyzing unicellular LLT polynomials. We first present a linearity theorem for unicellular LLT polynomials for $k=2$. By analyzing linear relations between LLT polynomials with known results on LLT polynomials for rectangles, we provide the $2$-Schur positivity of the unicellular LLT polynomials as well as LLT polynomials appearing in Haiman-Hugland conjecture for $k=2$.

Crystal structures for symmetric Grothendieck polynomials
Published in Transform. Groups 26(3):1025-1075, 2021 • View Publication • BIB
The symmetric Grothendieck polynomials representing Schubert classes in the $K$-theory of Grassmannians are generating functions for semistandard set-valued tableaux. We construct a type $A_n$ crystal structure on these tableaux. This crystal yields a new combinatorial formula for decomposing symmetric Grothendieck polynomials into Schur polynomials. For single-columns and single-rows, we give a new combinatorial interpretation of Lascoux polynomials (K-analogs of Demazure characters) by constructing a K-theoretic analog of crystals with an appropriate analog of a Demazure crystal. We relate our crystal structure to combinatorial models using excited Young diagrams, Gelfand-Tsetlin patterns via the $5$-vertex model, and biwords via Hecke insertion to compute symmetric Grothendieck polynomials.
