Comparison of stability indices of powers of graded ideals
In this paper, we compare the index of ass-stability $\text{astab}(I)$ and the index of $\text{v}$-stability $\text{vstab}(I)$ of powers of a graded ideal $I$. We prove that $\text{astab}(I)=1\le\text{vstab}(I)$ for any graded ideal $I$ in a 2-dimensional polynomial ring, and that $\text{vstab}(I)$ can be any positive integer in this situation. Moreover, given any integers $a,b\ge1$, we construct a graded ideal $I$ in a $3(a+1)$-dimensional polynomial ring such that $(\text{astab}(I),\text{vstab}(I))=(a,b)$.

Properties of LCM Lattices of Monomial Ideals
LCM lattices were introduced by Gasharov, Peeva, and Welker as a way to study minimal free resolutions of monomial ideals. All LCM lattices are atomic and all atomic lattices arise as the LCM lattice of some monomial ideal. We systematically study other lattice properties of LCM lattices. For lattices associated to the edge ideal of a graph, we completely characterize the many standard lattice properties in terms of the associated graphs: Boolean, modular, upper semimodular, lower semimodular, supersolvable, coatomic, and complemented; edge ideals with graded LCM lattices were previously characterized by Nevo and Peeva as those associated to gap-free graphs. Such a characterization for arbitrary monomial ideals appears to be out of reach. However, we prove the Cohen-Macaulayness of minimal monomial ideals associated to modular lattices. We also prove separate necessary and sufficient lattice conditions for when the projective dimension of a monomial ideal matches the height of its LCM lattice.

Order polytopes of graded posets are gamma-effective
Order polytopes of posets have been a very rich topic at the crossroads between combinatorics and discrete geometry since their definition by Stanley in 1986. Among other notable results, order polytopes of graded posets are known to be $γ$-nonnegative by work of Brändén, who introduced the concept of sign-graded poset in the process. In the present paper we are interested in proving an equivariant version of Brändén's result, using the tools of equivariant Ehrhart theory (introduced by Stapledon in 2011). Namely, we prove that order polytopes of graded posets are always $γ$-effective, i.e., that the $γ$-polynomial associated with the equivariant $h^*$-polynomial of the order polytope of any graded poset has coefficients consisting of actual characters. To reach this goal, we develop a theory of order polytopes of sign-graded posets, and find a formula to express the numerator of the equivariant Ehrhart series of such an object in terms of the saturations (à la Brändén) of the given sign-graded poset.
When are Hopf algebras determined by integer sequences?
Published • View Publication • BIB
We study the category of graded Hopf algebras that are free noncommutative, cocommutative, graded and connected from the perspective of the sequences of dimensions of the graded pieces. We show that a Hopf algebra exists with a given sequence of graded dimensions if and only if the ``INVERTi'' transformation of the sequence is nonnegative. We give conditions on the sequences of graded dimensions for two Hopf algebras $H$ and $K$ in this category under which there exists a surjective homomorphism from $H$ to $K$. We also give conditions such that an isomorphic copy of $H$ occurs as a Hopf subalgebra of $K$.
The partial derivative of ratios of Schur polynomials and applications to symplectic quotients
Published in European Journal of Combinatorics Volume 134 (2026), 104351 • View Publication • BIB
We show that a ratio of Schur polynomials $s_λ/s_ρ$ associated to partitions $λ$ and $ρ$ such that $λ\subsetneqρ$ has a negative partial derivative at any point where all variables are positive. This is accomplished by establishing an injective map between sets of pairs of skew semistandard Young tableaux that preserves the product of the corresponding monomials. We use this result and the description of the first Laurent coefficient of the Hilbert series of the graded algebra of regular functions on a linear symplectic quotient by the circle to demonstrate that many such symplectic quotients are not graded regularly diffeomorphic. In addition, we give an upper bound for this Laurent coefficient in terms of the largest two weights of the circle representation and demonstrate that all but finitely many circle symplectic quotients of each dimension are not graded regularly diffeomorphic to linear symplectic quotients by $\operatorname{SU}_2$.

An Intersection Product for the Polytope Algebra
We introduce a new multiplication for the polytope algebra, defined via the intersection of polytopes. After establishing the foundational properties of this intersection product, we investigate finite-dimensional subalgebras that arise naturally from this construction. These subalgebras can be regarded as volumetric analogues of the graded Möbius algebra, which appears in the context of the Dowling-Wilson conjecture. We conjecture that they also satisfy the injective hard Lefschetz property and the Hodge-Riemann relations, and we prove these in degree one.

Geometry of regular semisimple Lusztig varieties
Lusztig varieties are subvarieties in flag manifolds $G/B$ associated to an element $w$ in the Weyl group $W$ and an element $x$ in $G$, introduced in Lusztig's papers on character sheaves. We study the geometry of these varieties when $x$ is regular semisimple. In the first part, we establish that they are normal, Cohen-Macaulay, of pure expected dimension and have rational singularities. We then show that the cohomology of ample line bundles vanishes in positive degrees, in arbitrary characteristic. This extends to nef line bundles when the base field has characteristic zero or sufficiently large characteristic. Along the way, we prove that Lusztig varieties are Frobenius split in positive characteristic and that their open cells are affine. We also prove that the open cells in Deligne-Lusztig varieties are affine, settling a question that has been open since the foundational paper of Deligne and Lusztig. In the second part, we explore their relationship with regular semisimple Hessenberg varieties. Both varieties admit Tymoczko's dot action of $W$ on their (intersection) cohomology. We associate to each element $w$ in $W$ a Hessenberg space using the tangent cone of the Schubert variety associated with $w$, and show that the cohomology of the associated regular semisimple Lusztig varieties and Hessenberg varieties is isomorphic as graded $W$-representations when they are smooth. This relationship extends to the level of varieties: we construct a flat degeneration of regular semisimple Lusztig varieties to regular semisimple Hessenberg varieties. In particular, this proves a conjecture of Abreu and Nigro on the homeomorphism types of regular semisimple Lusztig varieties in type $A$, and generalizes it to arbitrary Lie types.

Abstract simplicial complexes in {\tt Macaulay2}
Published • View Publication • BIB
{\tt AbstractSimplicialComplexes.m2} is a computer algebra package written for the computer algebra system {\tt Macaulay2} \cite{M2}. It provides new infrastructure to work with abstract simplicial complexes and related homological constructions. Its key novel feature is to implement each given abstract simplicial complex as a certain graded list in the form of a hash table with integer keys. Among other features, this allows for a direct implementation of the associated reduced and non-reduced simplicial chain complexes. Further, it facilitates construction of random simplicial complexes. The approach that we employ here builds on the {\tt Macaulay2} package {\tt Complexes.m2} \cite{Stillman:Smith:Complexes.m2}. It complements and is entirely different from the existing {\tt Macaulay2} simplicial complexes framework that is made possible by the package {\tt SimplicialComplexes.m2} \cite{Smith:et:al:SimplicialComplexes.m2:jsag}.
Shellability of the quotient order on lattice path matroids
The concept of a matroid quotient has connections to fundamental questions in the geometry of flag varieties. In previous work, Benedetti and Knauer characterized quotients in the class of lattice path matroids (LPMs) in terms of a simple combinatorial condition. As a consequence, they showed that the quotient order on LPMs yields a graded poset whose rank polynomial relates to a refinement of the Catalan numbers. In this work we show that this poset admits an EL-labeling, implying that the order complex is shellable and hence enjoys several combinatorial and topological properties. We use this to establish bounds on the Möbius function of the poset, interpreting falling chains in the EL-labeling in terms of properties of underlying permutations. Furthermore, we show that this EL-labeling is in fact a Whitney labeling, in the sense of the recent notion introduced by González D'León and Hallam.
A spanning tree model for chromatic homology
After the discovery of Khovanov homology, which categorifies the Jones polynomial, an analogous categorification of the chromatic polynomial, known as chromatic homology, was introduced. Its graded Euler characteristic recovers the chromatic polynomial. In this paper, we present a spanning tree model for the chromatic complex, i.e., we describe a chain complex generated by certain spanning trees of the graph that is chain homotopy equivalent to the chromatic complex. We employ the spanning tree model over $\mathcal{A}_m:= \frac{\mathbb{Z}[x]}{<x^m>}$ algebra to answer two open questions. First, we establish the conjecture posed by Sazdanovic and Scofield regarding the homological span of chromatic homology over $\\mathcal{A}_m$ algebra, demonstrating that for any graph $G$ with $v$ vertices and $b$ blocks, the homological span is $v - b$. Additionally, we prove a conjecture of Helme-Guizon, Przytycki, and Rong concerning the existence of torsion of order dividing $m$ in chromatic homology over $\mathcal{A}_m$ algebra.

Equivalences and Distinctions in Lexicographic Shellability of Posets
We present two perhaps surprisingly small posets, one graded and one non-graded, that are CC-shellable in the sense of Kozlov and TCL-shellable in the sense of Hersh, but not CL-shellable in the sense of Björner and Wachs. In the spirit of Björner and Wachs' recursive atom orderings (RAO) and Hersh and Stadnyk's generalized recursive atom orderings (GRAO), we also introduce a notion called recursive first atom sets (RFAS). An RFAS is a set of conditions on the atoms of each interval in a finite bounded poset $P$ that are necessary for CC-shellability of $P$ and sufficient for shellability of $P$. We also prove that under an extra condition, $P$ is CC-shellable if and only if it admits an RFAS, in the same way that RAOs provide a reformulation of CL-shellability.

Invariant theory for wreath products acting on superpolynomials
This paper considers a finite group $G$ acting linearly on the variables $V$ of a polynomial algebra, or an exterior algebra, or superpolynomial algebra with both commuting and anticommuting variables. In this setting, the Hilbert series for the $G$-invariant subalgebra turns out to determine the analogous Hilbert series for the wreath product $P[G]$ acting on $V^n$ for any permutation group $P$ inside the symmetric group $S_n$ on $n$ letters. This leads to a structural result: one can collate the direct sum for all $n$ of the $S_n[G]$-invariant subalgebras to form a graded ring via an external shuffle product, whose structure turns out to be a superpolynomial algebra generated by the $G$-invariants. A parallel statement holds for the direct sum of all $S_n[G]$-antiinvariants, which forms a graded ring via an external signed shuffle product, isomorphic to the superexterior algebra generated by the $G$-invariants.

Zigzags, contingency tables, and quotient rings
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $\mathbf{x}_{k \times p}$ be a $k \times p$ matrix of variables and let $\mathbb{F}[\mathbf{x}_{k \times p}]$ be the polynomial ring in these variables. Given two weak compositions $α,β\models_0 n$ of lengths $\ell(α) = k$ and $\ell(β) = p$, we study the ideal $I_{α,β} \subseteq \mathbb{F}[\mathbf{x}_{k \times \ell}]$ generated by row sums, column sums, monomials in row $i$ of degree $> α_i$, and monomials in column $j$ of degree $> β_j$. We prove results connecting algebraic properties of the quotient ring $R_{α,β} := \mathbb{F}[\mathbf{x}_{k \times \ell}]/I_{α,β}$ with the set $C_{α,β}$ of $α,β$-contingency tables. The standard monomial basis of $R_{α,β}$ with respect to a diagonal term order is encoded by the matrix-ball avatar of the RSK correspondence. We describe the Hilbert series of $R_{α,β}$ in terms of a zigzag statistic on contingency tables. The ring $R_{α,β}$ carries a graded action of the product $\mathrm{Stab}(α) \times \mathrm{Stab}(β)$ of symmetry groups of the sequences $α= (α_1,\dots,α_k)$ and $β= (β_1,\dots,β_p)$; we describe how to calculate the isomorphism type of this graded action. Our analysis regards the set $C_{α,β}$ as a locus in the affine space $\mathrm{Mat}_{k \times p}(\mathbb{F})$ and applies orbit harmonics to this locus.

On the module of derivations of a line arrangement
To each multiple point $p$ in a line arrangement $ \mathcal A$ in the complex projective plane we associate a local derivation $\tilde D_p \in D_0( \mathcal A)$. We show first that these derivations span the graded module of derivations $D_0( \mathcal A)$ in all degrees $\geq d -3$, where $d$ is the number of lines in $ \mathcal A$, see Theorem 1.4 and Theorem 1.6. Then, to each local derivation $\tilde D_p \in D_0( \mathcal A)$ we associate a polynomial $g_p$ which seems to play a key role in the characterization of the freeness of $ \mathcal A$, see Theorem 1.10, as well as in the study of the position of the multiple points of $ \mathcal A$ with respect to unions of lines, see Corollary 1.13 and Conjecture 1.14. Corollary 1.9 gives a result of an independent interest, namely a lower bound for the maximal exponent of a plane curve having a line as an irreducible component.

Square-free powers of Cohen-Macaulay simplicial forests
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $I(Δ)^{[k]}$ denote the $k^{\text{th}}$ square-free power of the facet ideal of a simplicial complex $Δ$ in a polynomial ring $R$. Square-free powers are intimately related to the `Matching Theory' and `Ordinary Powers'. In this article, we show that if $Δ$ is a Cohen-Macaulay simplicial forest, then $R/I(Δ)^{[k]}$ is Cohen-Macaulay for all $k\ge 1$. This result is quite interesting since all ordinary powers of a graded radical ideal can never be Cohen-Macaulay unless it is a complete intersection. To prove the result, we introduce a new combinatorial notion called special leaf, and using this, we provide an explicit combinatorial formula of $\mathrm{depth}(R/I(Δ)^{[k]})$ for all $k\ge 1$, where $Δ$ is a Cohen-Macaulay simplicial forest. As an application, we show that the normalized depth function of a Cohen-Macaulay simplicial forest is nonincreasing.
The geometry of zonotopal algebras I: cohomology of graphical configuration spaces
Zonotopal algebras of vector arrangements are combinatorially-defined algebras with connections to approximation theory, introduced by Holtz and Ron and independently by Ardila and Postnikov. We show that the internal zonotopal algebra of a cographical vector arrangement is isomorphic to the cohomology ring of a certain configuration space introduced by Moseley, Proudfoot, and Young. We also study an integral form of this algebra, which in the cographical case is isomorphic to the integral cohomology ring. Our results rely on interpreting the internal zonotopal algebra of a totally unimodular arrangement as an orbit harmonics ring, that is, as the associated graded of the ring of functions on a finite set of lattice points.

CW-complexes and minimal Hilbert vector of graded Artinian Gorenstein algebras
I introduce a geometric interpretation of the set of standard graded Artinian Gorenstein algebras of codimension $n$ and degree $d$: the standard locus, which is a subset of the projective space of degree $d$ polynomials in $n$ variables, and I characterize it. Under opportune hypothesis, I prove that the locus of full Perazzo polynomials is the union of the minimal dimensional irreducible components of the standard locus and it is pure dimensional subset. On the other hand, I associate to any homogeneous polynomial a topological space, which is a CW-complex. Using all these sets, I prove that the Hilbert function restricted to the standard locus has minimal values on any irreducible component of the domain. I apply all this to the Full Perazzo Conjecture and I prove it.
Probabilistic intersection theory in Riemannian homogeneous spaces
Let $M=G/H$ be a Riemannian homogeneous space, where $G$ is a compact Lie group with closed subgroup $H$. Classical intersection theory states that the de Rham cohomology ring of $M$ describes the signed count of intersection points of submanifolds $Y_1, \ldots, Y_s$ of $M$ in general position, when the codimensions add up to $\dim M$. We introduce the probabilistic intersection ring $\mathrm{H}_{\mathbb E}(M)$, whose multiplication describes the unsigned count of intersection points, when the $Y_i$ are randomly moved by independent uniformly random elements of $G$. The probabilistic intersection ring $\mathrm{H}_{\mathbb E}(M)$ has the structure of a graded commutative and associative real Banach algebra. It is defined as a quotient of the ring of Grassmann zonoids of a fixed cotangent space $V$ of $M$. The latter was introduced by the authors in [Adv. Math. 402, 2022]. There is a close connection to valuations of convex bodies: $\mathrm{H}_{\mathbb E}(M)$ can be interpreted as a subspace of the space of translation invariant, even, continuous valuations on $V$, whose multiplication coincides with Alesker's multiplication for smooth valuations. We describe the ring structure of the probabilistic intersection ring for spheres, real projective space and complex projective space, relying on Fu [J. Diff. Geo. 72(3), 2006] for the latter case. From this, we derive an interesting probabilistic intersection formula in complex projective space. Finally, we initiate the investigation of the probabilistic intersection ring for real Grassmannians, outlining the construction of a probabilistic version of Schubert Calculus.

The free and parking quasi-symmetrizing actions
We define two actions of the infinite symmetric group on the set of words on positive integers, called the free and parking quasi-symmetrizing actions, whose invariants are respectively the elements of the Hopf algebras $\textbf{FQSym}^*$ and $\textbf{PQSym}^*$. We study in depth the parking quasi-symmetrizing action by generalizing it to actions with a parameter $r\in(\mathbb{N}\setminus \{0\} )\bigcup\{\infty\}$. We prove that the spaces of the invariants under these $r$-actions form an infinite chain of nested graded Hopf subalgebras of $\textbf{PQSym}^*$. We give some properties of these Hopf algebras including their Hilbert series, a basis, and formulas for their product and coproduct. Finally we look more closely at the case $r=\infty$, obtaining enumerative results related to trees with maximal decreasing subtrees of given sizes.

DG-Sensitive Pruning & a Complete Classification of DG Trees and Cycles
Published • View Publication • BIB
Given a squarefree monomial ideal $I$ of a polynomial ring $Q$, we show that if the minimal free resolution $\mathbb{F}$ of $Q/I$ admits the structure of a differential graded (dg) algebra, then so does any "pruning" of $\mathbb{F}$. As an application, we show that if $Q/\mathcal{F}(Δ)$, the quotient of the ambient polynomial ring by the facet ideal $\mathcal{F}(Δ)$ of a simplicial complex $Δ$, is minimally resolved by a dg algebra, then so is the quotient by the facet ideal of each facet-induced subcomplex of $Δ$ (over the smaller polynomial ring). Along with techniques from discrete Morse theory and homological algebra, this allows us to give complete classifications of the trees and cycles $G$ with $Q/I_G$ minimally resolved by a dg algebra in terms of the diameter of $G$, where $I_G$ is the edge ideal of $G$.
