Diagonal Specht ideals and their varieties
We study the diagonal Specht ideals $I_λ\subseteq\mathcal{R}_{m,n}:=\mathbb{C}[\mathbf{x}_1,\dots,\mathbf{x}_m]$, $\mathbf{x}_r=(x_{r,1},\dots,x_{r,n})$, generated by the $λ$-isotypic component of $\mathcal{R}_{m,n}$ for the diagonal action of $S_n$. We characterize the set of zeros of $I_λ$ as $V_λ=\bigcup_{μ\not\trianglelefteqλ}H_μ$ and prove that $λ\mapsto V_λ$ is an isomorphism of posets from $(\mathcal{P}_n,\trianglelefteq)$ to $(\{V_λ:λ\in \mathcal{P}_n\},\supseteq)$ for all $m$, while $λ\mapsto I_λ$ is an isomorphism of posets from $(\mathcal{P}_n,\trianglelefteq)$ to $(\{I_λ:λ\in \mathcal{P}_n\},\subseteq)$ if and only if $m=1$ or $n\leq3$. Unlike the case $m=1$, where Specht ideals are always radical, radicality in the diagonal setting depends on $λ$ and $m$. We prove radicality for hook partitions of length at most three by providing explicit Gröbner bases, and we develop three criteria for non-radicality via content, multidegree, and total degree, showing in particular that $I_λ$ is not radical for any non-hook partition $λ$ when $m\geq\operatorname{len}(λ)$. Using the $\operatorname{GL}_m(\mathbb{C})$-action on $\mathcal{R}_{m,n}$, we show that $I_λ$ is radical for all $m$ if and only if it is radical for $m=n$. Finally, for $m\geq2$, we prove that $\mathcal{R}_{m,n}/I_λ$ is Cohen-Macaulay if and only if $λ=(n)$ or $λ=(n-1,1)$, and the same is true for $\mathcal{R}_{m,n}/\operatorname{rad}(I_λ)$.
Extending Symmetric Layer-Rainbow Latin Cubes
An $n\times n\times n$ array on $n^2$ symbols is a layer-rainbow Latin cube if every layer contains every symbol exactly once. We call it symmetric if $L_{ij\ell}=L_{j\ell i}=L_{\ell ij}$ for distinct $i,j,\ell$ and $L_{iij}=L_{jji}$, $L_{iji}=L_{jij}$, $L_{ijj}=L_{jii}$ for distinct $i,j$. We determine exactly when a symmetric layer-rainbow Latin cube of order $m$ embeds in one of order $n$, giving a three-dimensional analogue of Cruse's embedding theorem. Call a positive integer admissible if it is congruent to $0$ or $2$ modulo $3$, with $1$ admissible and $3$ excluded. For $n>m$, an embedding exists if and only if $m,n$ are admissible, $(m,n)\ne(2,5)$, and \[ \begin{cases}
n\geq2m,&n-m\not\equiv1\pmod3,\\[1mm]
\displaystyle n\geq m+\frac{\sqrt{48m^2+1}-1}{6},&n-m\equiv1\pmod3. \end{cases} \] Via the equivalent one-factorization problem for a non-uniform hypergraph, fair detachment reduces the proof to an exact integer allocation. We also determine the structure forced at both sharp boundaries and obtain infinitely many equality cases. At order eight, we construct a symmetric layer-rainbow Latin cube admitting the natural diagonal action of $\operatorname{PSL}(2,7)$, whose induced action on the $64$ symbols has orbit sizes $1,7,28,28$.
The Action of the Lie Algebra $\mathfrak{sl}_n$ on Colored Graphs and Multicolored Johnson Graphs
We consider the space of $(n-1)$-colored graphs on a fixed set of $N$ vertices. Each edge position of the complete graph $K_N$ has $n$ possible states: the absence of an edge and $n-1$ colors. This gives a natural identification of the space of such graphs with the tensor power $(\mathbb C^n)^{\otimes m}$, where $m=\binom N2$, and defines on it the diagonal action of the Lie algebra $\mathfrak{gl}_n$, and, after restriction, the action of $\mathfrak{sl}_n$. For a fixed profile $α=(α_0,\dots,α_{n-1})$, we consider the graph $J(m;α)$ whose vertices are colored graphs of this profile and whose adjacency is defined by a single exchange of states in two edge positions. This graph is the transposition graph on the set of words with fixed profile, also known as the \emph{multislice}. The main result is an expression of the adjacency operator in terms of the root operators of $\mathfrak{sl}_n$ and a derivation of its spectrum by means of the quadratic Casimir operator of $\mathfrak{gl}_n$ and the Schur--Weyl decomposition. It is proved that the adjacency operator belongs to the center of the algebra $\End_{S_m}(\mathcal C_α)$. The contribution of each spectral block to the multiplicity of the corresponding eigenvalue is described in terms of a Kostka number and the dimension of a Specht module. For $n=2$, one obtains the classical Johnson graph and its known spectrum. As applications, a formula for the valency is established, connectivity is proved, the Hoffman bound for independent sets is obtained, and the three-state case is considered in detail; in this case the natural symmetrized subspace realizes the module $\Sym^m(\mathbb C^3)$.
Total positivity in twisted flag varieties
Let $G$ be a Kac-Moody group, split over $\mathbb R$. The totally nonnegative part of $G$ and its (ordinary) flag variety $G/B^+$ was introduced by Lusztig. It is known that the totally nonnegative parts of $G$ and $G/B^+$ have remarkable combinatorial and topological properties.
In this paper, we consider the totally nonnegative part of the $J$-twisted flag variety $G/{}^J B^+$, where ${}^J B^+$ is the Borel subgroup opposite to $B^+$ in the standard parabolic subgroup $P_J^+$ of $G$. The $J$-twisted flag varieties include the ordinary flag variety $G/B^+$ as a special case. Our main result show that the totally nonnegative part of $G/{}^J B^+$ decomposes into cells, and the closure of each cell is a regular CW complex. This generalizes the work of Galashin-Karp-Lam \cite{GKL22} and the joint work of Bao with the first author \cite{BH24} for ordinary flag varieties.
As an application, we deduce that the totally nonnegative part of the double flag variety $G/B^+ \times G/B^-$ with respect to the diagonal $G$-action has similar nice properties. We also establish some connections between the totally nonnegative part of the double flag with the canonical basis of the tensor product of a lowest weight module with a highest weight module of $G$.
As another application, we show that the link of identity in a totally nonnegative reduced double Bruhat cell of $G$ is a regular CW complex. This generalizes the work of Hersh \cite{Her14} on the link of $U_{\geq0}^-$ and gives a positive answer to an open question of Fomin and Zelevinsky.
The nonsymmetric shuffle theorem
The shuffle conjecture of Haglund et al. expresses the symmetric function $\nabla e_n$ as a sum over labeled Dyck paths. Here $\nabla$ is an operator on symmetric functions defined in terms of its diagonal action on the basis of modified Macdonald polynomials. The shuffle conjecture was later refined by Haglund-Morse-Zabrocki to the compositional shuffle conjecture, expressing $\nabla C_α$ as a sum over labeled Dyck paths with touchpoints specified by $α$, where $C_α$ is a compositional Hall-Littlewood polynomial. Carlsson-Mellit settled both versions by developing the theory of a variant of the DAHA called the double Dyck path algebra.
In a recent paper, we discovered a notion of nonsymmetric plethsym which led us to a construction of modified nonsymmetric Macdonald polynomials $\mathsf{H}_{η|λ}(\mathbf{x};q,t)$. These polynomials Weyl symmetrize to their symmetric counterparts and are conjecturally atom positive. Here we introduce a nonsymmetric version $\boldsymbol{\nabla}$ of $\nabla$, now acting diagonally on the basis given by the functions $\mathsf{H}_{η|λ}(\mathbf{x};q,t)$. Weaving together our theory with results of Carlsson-Mellit and Mellit, we establish a nonsymmetric version of the compositional shuffle theorem, which equates $\boldsymbol{\nabla}^{-1}$ applied to a nonsymmetric version $\mathsf{C}_α$ of $C_α$ with a sum over flagged labeled Dyck paths with touchpoints given by $α$. This combinatorial sum is conjecturally atom positive, refining the known Schur positivity of its symmetric counterpart.

A MacMahon symmetric function is an invariant of the diagonal action of the symmetric group on power series in multiple alphabets of variables. We introduce an analogue of the chromatic symmetric function for vertex-weighted graphs, taking values in the MacMahon symmetric functions on two sets of variables, recording information about both cardinalities and weights of vertex sets. We prove that the chromatic symmetric MacMahon function of a tree determines the generating function for its vertex subsets by cardinality, weight, and the numbers of internal and external edges. This result generalizes the one for the unweighted case, first conjectured by Crew and proved independently by Aliste-Prieto--Martin--Wagner--Zamora and Liu--Tang.
Diagonal Supersymmetry for Coinvariant Rings
For finite groups $G$, we show that bosonic-fermionic coinvariant rings have a natural $U(\mathfrak{gl}(k|j)) \otimes \mathbb{C}[G]$-module structure. In particular, we show that their character series are a sum of super Schur functions $s_λ(\mathbf{q}/\mathbf{u})$ times irreducible characters of $G$ with universal coefficients, which do not depend on $k,j$. In the case where $G$ is the symmetric group with diagonal action, this proves the "Diagonal Supersymmetry" conjecture of Bergeron (2020).

Segre products of posets were defined by Björner and Welker (2005). We investigate the homology representations of the $t$-fold Segre power $B_n^{(t)}$ of the Boolean lattice $B_n$. The direct product $\sym_n^{\times t}$ of the symmetric group $\sym_n$ acts on the homology of rank-selected subposets of $B_n^{(t)}$. We give an explicit formula for the decomposition into $\sym_n^{\times t}$-irreducibles of the homology of the full poset, as well as formulas for the diagonal action of the symmetric group $\sym_n$. For the rank-selected homology, we show that the stable principal specialisation of the product Frobenius characteristic of the $\sym_n^{\times t}$-module coincides with the corresponding rank-selected invariant of the $t$-fold Segre power of the subspace lattice.

We introduce higher Specht polynomials - analogs of Specht polynomials in higher degrees - in two sets of variables $x_1,\ldots,x_n$ and $y_1,\ldots,y_n$ under the diagonal action of the symmetric group $S_n$. This generalizes the classical Specht polynomial construction in one set of variables, as well as the higher Specht basis for the coinvariant ring $R_n$ due to Ariki, Terasoma, and Yamada, which has the advantage of respecting the decomposition into irreducibles.
As our main application of the general theory, we provide a higher Specht basis for the hook shape Garsia--Haiman modules. In the process, we obtain a new formula for their doubly graded Frobenius series in terms of new generalized cocharge statistics on tableaux.

Let $Θ_n = (θ_1, \dots, θ_n)$ and $Ξ_n = (ξ_1, \dots, ξ_n)$ be two lists of $n$ variables and consider the diagonal action of $\mathfrak{S}_n$ on the exterior algebra $\wedge \{ Θ_n, Ξ_n \}$ generated by these variables. Jongwon Kim and Rhoades defined and studied the fermionic diagonal coinvariant ring $FDR_n$ obtained from $\wedge \{ Θ_n, Ξ_n \}$ by modding out by the $\mathfrak{S}_n$-invariants with vanishing constant term. In joint work with Rhoades we gave a basis for the maximal degree components of this ring where the action of $\mathfrak{S}_n$ could be interpreted combinatorially via noncrossing set partitions. This paper will do similarly for the entire ring, although the combinatorial interpretation will be limited to the action of $\mathfrak{S}_{n-1} \subset \mathfrak{S}_n$. The basis will be indexed by a certain class of noncrossing partitions.

Jongwon Kim and the second author defined and studied the fermionic diagonal coinvariant ring $FDR_n$ obtained from $\wedge \{ Θ_n, Ξ_n \}$ by modding out by the $\mathfrak{S}_n$-invariants with vanishing constant term. On the other hand, the second author described an action of $\mathfrak{S}_n$ on the vector space with basis given by noncrossing set partitions of $\{1,\dots,n\}$ using a novel family of skein relations which resolve crossings in set partitions. We give an isomorphism between a natural Catalan-dimensional submodule of $FDR_n$ and the skein representation. To do this, we show that set partition skein relations arise naturally in the context of exterior algebras. Our approach yields an $\mathfrak{S}_n$-equivariant way to resolve crossings in set partitions. We use fermions to clarify, sharpen, and extend the theory of set partition crossing resolution.
Stability theorems for multiplicities in graded $S_n$-modules
In this paper, we prove several stability theorems for multiplicities of naturally defined representations of symmetric groups. The first such theorem states that if we consider the diagonal action of the symmetric group $S_{m+r}$ on $k$ sets of $m+r$ variables, then the dimension of the invariants of degree $m$ is the same as the dimension of the invariants of degree $m$ for $S_{m}$ acting on $k$ sets of $m$ variables. Building on this stability, the last section looks at the Hilbert series of coinvariants of the polynomial ring in $k$ sets of $m$ variables. We address a conjecture that the Hilbert series, in degrees no more than $m$, can be computed by a truncated power series expression. Using some auxiliary results and manipulations of power series, we show that if this holds for $k$ and $m$, then the truncation gives the correct Hilbert series up to degree $m$ for $k$ sets of $n \geq m$ variables. This shows the validity of the conjecture up to certain degrees. We also provide a new equivalent conjecture regarding Gröbner bases.
The second type of stability result is for Weyl modules. We prove that the dimension of the $S_{m+r}$ invariants for a Weyl module ${}_{m+r}F^λ$ (the Schur-Weyl dual of the $S_{|λ|}$ module $V^λ$) with $\left\vert λ\right\vert \leq m$ is of the same dimension as the space of $S_{m}$ invariants for ${}_{m}F^λ$. Multigraded versions of the first type of result are given, as are multigraded generalizations to non-trivial modules of symmetric groups.

Given a symmetric pair $(G,K)=(\mathrm{GL}_{p+q}(\mathbb{C}),\mathrm{GL}_{p}(\mathbb{C})\times \mathrm{GL}_{q}(\mathbb{C}))$ of type AIII, we consider the diagonal action of $K$ on the double flag variety $\mathfrak{X}=\mathrm{Grass}(\mathbb{C}^{p+q},r)\times K/B_K$ whose first factor is a Grassmann variety for $G$ and whose second factor is a full flag variety of $K$. There is a finite number of orbits for this action, and our first result is a description of these orbits: parametrization, dimensions, closure relations, and cover relations. Specifically, the orbits are parametrized by certain pairs of partial permutations.
Each orbit in $\mathfrak{X}$ gives rise to a conormal bundle. As in the references [5] and [6], by using the moment map associated to the action, we define a so-called symmetrized Steinberg map, respectively an exotic Steinberg map, which assigns to each such conormal bundle (thus to each orbit) a nilpotent orbit in the Lie algebra of $K$, respectively in the Cartan complement of that Lie algebra. Our main result is an explicit description of these Steinberg maps in terms of combinatorial algorithms on partial permutations, extending the classical Robinson--Schensted procedure on permutations. This is a thorough generalization of the results in [5], where we supposed $p=q=r$ and considered orbits of special forms.

Let $G$ be a finite permutation group on $Ω$. An ordered sequence of elements of $Ω$, $(ω_1,\dots, ω_t)$, is an irredundant base for $G$ if the pointwise stabilizer $G_{(ω_1,\dots, ω_t)}$ is trivial and no point is fixed by the stabilizer of its predecessors. If all irredundant bases of $G$ have the same size we say that $G$ is an IBIS group. In this paper we show that if a primitive permutation group is IBIS, then it must be almost simple, of affine-type, or of diagonal type. Moreover we prove that a diagonal-type primitive permutation groups is IBIS if and only if it is isomorphic to $PSL(2,2^f)\times PSL(2,2^f)$ for some $f\geq 2,$ in its diagonal action of degree $2^f(2^{2f}-1).$
On the Positivity Conjecture for Finite Abelian p-Groups
For a partition $\underlineλ = (λ_{1}^{ρ_1}>λ_{2}^{ρ_2}>λ_{3}^{ρ_3}>\ldots>λ_{k}^{ρ_k})$ and its associated finite $\mathcal{R}$-module $\mathcal{A}_{\underlineλ}=\underset{i=1}{\overset{k}{\oplus}} (\mathcal{R}/π^{λ_i}\mathcal{R})^{ρ_i}$, where $\mathcal{R}$ is a discrete valuation ring, with maximal ideal generated by a uniformizing element $π$, having finite residue field ${\bf k}=\mathcal{R}/π\mathcal{R}\cong \mathbb{F}_q$, the number of orbits of pairs $n_{\underlineλ}(q)= \mid \mathcal{G}_{\underlineλ}\backslash \big(\mathcal{A}_{\underlineλ}\times \mathcal{A}_{\underlineλ}\big)\mid$ for the diagonal action of the automorphism group $\mathcal{G}_{\underlineλ}= Aut(\mathcal{A}_{\underlineλ})$, is a polynomial in $q$ with integer coefficients. Positivity conjecture states that these coefficients are in fact non-negative. In this article, we prove this conjecture.
Alternating super-polynomials and super-coinvariants of finite reflection groups
Motivated by a recent conjecture of Zabrocki, Wallach described the alternants in the super-coinvariant algebra of the symmetric group in one set of commuting and one set of anti-commuting variables under the diagonal action. We give a type-independent generalization of Wallach's result to all real reflection groups $G$. As an intermediate step, we explicitly describe the alternating super-polynomials in $k[V] \otimes Λ(V)$ for all complex reflection groups, providing an analogue of a classic result of Solomon which describes the invariant super-polynomials in $k[V] \otimes Λ(V^*)$. Using our construction, we explicitly describe the alternating harmonics and coinvariants for all real reflection groups.
Description of infinite orbits on multiple projective spaces
Let $G$ be the general linear group of the degree $n\geq 2$ over the field $\mathbb{K}=\mathbb{R}$ or $\mathbb{C}$. In this article, we give a description of orbit decomposition of the multiple projective space $G^m/P^m$ under the diagonal action of $G$ where $P$ is the maximal parabolic subgroup of $G$ such that $G/P\cong\mathbb{P}^{n-1}\mathbb{K}$. We also construct representatives of orbits. If $m\geq 4$, the number of orbits is infinite, and we give a description of those uncountably many orbits.

We continue our study of the inclusion posets of diagonal $SL(n)$-orbit closures in a product of two partial flag varieties. We prove that, if the diagonal action is of complexity one, then the poset is isomorphic to one of the 28 posets that we determine explicitly. Furthermore, our computations show that the number of diagonal $SL(n)$-orbits in any of these posets is at most 10 for any positive integer $n$. This is in contrast with the complexity 0 case, where, in some cases, the resulting posets attain arbitrary heights.

A countable poset is ultrahomogeneous if every isomorphism between its finite subposets can be extended to an automorphism. The groups $\operatorname{Aut}(A)$ of such posets $A$ have a natural topology in which $\operatorname{Aut}(A)$ are Polish topological groups. We consider the problem whether $\operatorname{Aut}(A)$ contains a dense free subgroup of two generators. We show that if $A$ is ultrahomogeneous, then $\operatorname{Aut}(A)$ contains such subgroup. Moreover, we characterize whose countable ultrahomogeneous posets $A$ such that for each natural $m$, the set of all cyclically dense elements $\bar{g}\in\operatorname{Aut}(A)^m$ for the diagonal action is comeager in $\operatorname{Aut}(A)^m$. In our considerations we strongly use the result of Schmerl which says that there are essentially four types of countably infinite ultrahomogeneous posets.
Higher dimensional Steinhaus and Slater problems via homogeneous dynamics
The three gap theorem, also known as the Steinhaus conjecture or three distance theorem, states that the gaps in the fractional parts of $α,2α,\ldots, Nα$ take at most three distinct values. Motivated by a question of Erdős, Geelen and Simpson, we explore a higher-dimensional variant, which asks for the number of gaps between the fractional parts of a linear form. Using the ergodic properties of the diagonal action on the space of lattices, we prove that for almost all parameter values the number of distinct gaps in the higher dimensional problem is unbounded. Our results in particular improve earlier work by Boshernitzan, Dyson and Bleher et al. We furthermore discuss a close link with the Littlewood conjecture in multiplicative Diophantine approximation. Finally, we also demonstrate how our methods can be adapted to obtain similar results for gaps between return times of translations to shrinking regions on higher dimensional tori.
