Nonvanishing higher Specht polynomials and a construction for three row and hook shape Garsia--Procesi modules
Given a polynomial ring quotient $R=\mathbb{C}[x_1,\ldots,x_n]/I$ with an action of the symmetric group induced by permuting the variables, a higher Specht basis is a collection of bases for each irreducible $\mathfrak{S}_n$-module in its decomposition that mimics the behavior of the classical Specht polynomial construction in the lowest degrees. Higher Specht bases have now been constructed for the coinvariant ring, the full polynomial ring, the rings $R_{n,k}$ appearing in the $t=0$ Delta conjecture, the hook shape Garsia-Haiman modules, and the two-row Garsia-Procesi modules, and more. We establish a general theory for determining when a higher Specht polynomial is nonzero, and give a proof of a conjectural higher Specht basis for all Garsia-Procesi modules in the cases of three row shapes and hook shapes.

Posets for Specht ideals of essential real reflection groups
Specht ideals are symmetric ideals in the polynomial ring generated by Specht polynomials associated with group representations. These ideals were previously studied for reflection groups of types $A$ and $B$, where their inclusion relations and their varieties reflect rich combinatorial structures. In this paper, we extend this theory to type $D$ and the dihedral groups. Our results complete the combinatorial study of Specht ideals across all infinite families of essential real reflection groups.

Compatibility of Higher Specht Polynomials and Decompositions of Representations
%We show how to normalize the higher Specht polynomials of Ariki, Terasoma, and Yamada in a compatible way in order to define a stable version of these polynomials. We also decompose the non-transitive actions of Haglund, Rhoades, and Shimozono into orbits, and show how the associated basis of higher Specht polynomials of Gillespie and Rhoades respects that decomposition. For a given $n$, the orbits of the action of $S_{n}$ are associated with subsets of the set of positive integers that are smaller than $n$, and we relate the representation associated with a set $I$ to the ones of $S_{n+1}$ associated with $I$ and with its union with $n$, the latter being a lifting of the Branching Rule.

Generalized Higher Specht Polynomials and Homogeneous Representations of Symmetric Groups
We consider actions, similar to those of Haglund, Rhoades, and Shimozono on ordered partitions, and their basis in terms of the higher Specht polynomials of Ariki, Terasoma, and Yamada, as carried out by Gillespie and Rhoades. By allowing empty sets and working with multi-sets and weak partitions as indices, we obtain a decomposition of the action of $S_{n}$ on homogeneous polynomials of degree $d$ into irreducible representations, in a way that lifts a formula of Stanley. By considering generalized higher Specht polynomials, we obtain yet another such decomposition, lifting another formula involving Kostka numbers. We also investigate several operations on both types of representations, which are based on normalizations of the generalized higher Specht polynomials that allow for defining their stable versions.
Total trades, intersection matrices and Specht modules
Published • View Publication • BIB
Trades are important objects in combinatorial design theory that may be realized as certain elements of kernels of inclusion matrices. Total trades were introduced recently by Ghorbani, Kamali and Khosravshahi, who showed that over a field of characteristic zero the vector space of trades decomposes into a direct sum of spaces of total trades. In this paper, we show that the vector space spanned by the permutations of a total trade is an irreducible representation of the symmetric group. As a corollary, the previous decomposition theorem is recovered. Also, a basis is obtained for the module of total trades in the spirit of Specht polynomials. More generally, in the second part of the paper we consider intersection matrices and determine the irreducible decompositions of their images. This generalizes previously known results concerning ranks of special cases.

Symmetric Ideals and Invariant Hilbert Schemes
Published • View Publication • BIB
A symmetric ideal is an ideal in a polynomial ring which is stable under all permutations of the variables. In this paper we initiate a global study of zero-dimensional symmetric ideals. By this we mean a geometric study of the invariant Hilbert schemes $\mathrm{Hilb}_ρ^{S_n}(\mathbb{C}^n)$ parametrizing symmetric subschemes of $\mathbb{C}^n$ whose coordinate rings, as $S_n$-modules, are isomorphic to a given representation $ρ$. In the case that $ρ= M^λ$ is a permutation module corresponding to certain special types of partitions $λ$ of $n$, we prove that $\mathrm{Hilb}_ρ^{S_n}(\mathbb{C}^n)$ is irreducible or even smooth. We also prove irreducibility whenever $\dim ρ\leq 2n$ and the invariant Hilbert scheme is non-empty. In this same range, we classify all homogeneous symmetric ideals and decide which of these define singular points of $\mathrm{Hilb}_ρ^{S_n}(\mathbb{C}^n)$. A central tool is the combinatorial theory of higher Specht polynomials.

Higher Specht polynomials under the diagonal action
Published • View Publication • BIB
We introduce higher Specht polynomials - analogs of Specht polynomials in higher degrees - in two sets of variables $x_1,\ldots,x_n$ and $y_1,\ldots,y_n$ under the diagonal action of the symmetric group $S_n$. This generalizes the classical Specht polynomial construction in one set of variables, as well as the higher Specht basis for the coinvariant ring $R_n$ due to Ariki, Terasoma, and Yamada, which has the advantage of respecting the decomposition into irreducibles. As our main application of the general theory, we provide a higher Specht basis for the hook shape Garsia--Haiman modules. In the process, we obtain a new formula for their doubly graded Frobenius series in terms of new generalized cocharge statistics on tableaux.

From Young's Lattice to Coinvariants
Inspired by Vershik and Okounkov's inductive and Lie-theoretic approach to the representation theory of the symmetric group, we extend their point of view to reducible $S_n$-modules. Using induced representations along Young's lattice, we define an orthonormal weight basis for the regular representation of $S_n$ and use its rigidity to exhibit dualities between the left and right actions of $S_n$ and between restriction and induction of representations. We also show our weight basis is equivalent to the basis of matrix units corresponding to Young's seminormal form. We then realize $\mathbb{C}[S_n]$ in a subspace of the polynomial ring $R[z_1, \ldots , z_n]$. The induced weight decomposition allows us to map this subspace of polynomials to the ring of coinvariants, similar to the work of Ariki, Terasoma, and Yamada on higher Specht polynomials but perhaps a bit more intrinsic as we work in terms of an orthonormal basis. Our construction makes explicit the connection between the charge statistic on standard tableaux (which corresponds to degree in the coinvariant ring) and the action of adjacent transpositions on weight vectors in the seminormal representation of $S_n$. It also exposes the inductive structure of $S_n$ hidden in the coinvariant ring. All our constructions are elementary, and we are curious about their geometric meaning.
The poset of Specht ideals for hyperoctahedral groups
Published • View Publication • BIB
Specht polynomials classically realize the irreducible representations of the symmetric group. The ideals defined by these polynomials provide a strong connection with the combinatorics of Young tableaux and have been intensively studied by several authors. We initiate similar investigations for the ideals defined by the Specht polynomials associated to the hyperoctahedral group $B_n$. We introduce a bidominance order on bipartitions which describes the poset of inclusions of these ideals and study algebraic consequences on general $B_n$-invariant ideals and varieties, which can lead to computational simplifications.

Higher Specht bases for generalizations of the coinvariant ring
Published • View Publication • BIB
The classical coinvariant ring $R_n$ is defined as the quotient of a polynomial ring in $n$ variables by the positive-degree $S_n$-invariants. It has a known basis that respects the decomposition of $R_n$ into irreducible $S_n$-modules, consisting of the higher specht polynomials due to Ariki, Terasoma, and Yamada. We provide an extension of the higher Specht basis to the generalized coinvariant rings $R_{n,k}$. We also give a conjectured higher Specht basis for the Garsia-Procesi modules $R_μ$, and provide a proof of the conjecture in the case of two-row partition shapes $μ$. We then combine these results to give a higher Specht basis for an infinite subfamily of the modules $R_{n,k,μ}$ recently defined by Griffin, which are a common generalization of $R_{n,k}$ and $R_μ$.
