Stability of plethysm coefficients and modified polynomial induction
The plethysm coefficient $\langle h_n[h_m], s_λ\rangle$ is the multiplicity of the Weyl module $W_λ(\mathbb{C}^N)$ in the representation $\mathrm{Sym}^n(\mathrm{Sym}^m(\mathbb{C}^N))$ of $GL_N(\mathbb{C})$. We give short proofs of two stability results: the theorem of Bowman and Paget that $\langle h_n[h_m], s_{λ[mn]} \rangle$ is constant for $m, n \geq |λ|$, and Brion's theorem that $\langle h_n[h_{m+d}],\allowbreak s_{λ+(nd)} \rangle$ stabilizes as $d \to \infty$. A key step is the stability of vector partition functions. We show that the stable value in the theorem of Bowman and Paget equals $\langle h_{\lfloor|λ|/2\rfloor}[H-h_1], s_λ\rangle$. Our main new result connects this stable value to the multiplicity of the Weyl module in a representation of $GL_{|λ|}(\C)$. We give a formula for the stable Foulkes' coefficient in terms of a certain vector-partition function.

On fusion product and N!/k-conjecture
We formulate a version of Schur--Weyl duality for the current Lie algebra $\mathfrak{gl}_V[x,y]=\mathfrak{gl}_V\otimes\mathbb{C}[x,y]$. Under this duality, the Garsia--Haiman modules of the $N!$-conjecture become cyclic and cocyclic $\mathfrak{gl}_V[x,y]$-modules, and we describe them as iterated fusion and cofusion products of tautological $\mathfrak{gl}_V$-modules. We show that Haiman's $N!$-theorem for a diagram is equivalent to the coincidence of the fusion and the cofusion filtrations on the tensor product of the local Weyl modules attached to its rows, and that the fusion and cofusion products of Garsia--Haiman modules are associative. Let $λ$ and $μ$ be Young diagrams obtained by removing two different corners from the same diagram. We construct an iterated fusion product of $S^2V$ with local Weyl modules, which is a quotient of the common quotient of the Garsia--Haiman modules of $λ$ and $μ$, fits into short exact sequences with each of them, and has Butler's intersection polynomial as its character. This gives a representation-theoretic proof of Butler's conjecture. The same construction gives lower bounds for the dimensions in the $N!/k$-conjecture.
Lower and upper bounds of Schur characters
Characterizations of lower and upper bounds for dual characters of flagged Weyl modules have attracted considerable interest. In this paper, we establish explicit pattern avoidance characterizations for lower and upper bounds of Schur characters, namely, the dual characters of Weyl modules associated with arbitrary diagrams. This setting extends the corresponding extremal problems for dual characters of flagged Weyl modules and includes skew Schur polynomials and, through Rothe diagrams, Stanley symmetric functions. Specifically, for a permutation $w$, we show that the Stanley symmetric function $F_w$ attains the lower bound if and only if $w$ avoids $321,2143,2413,3142$, and $3412$, and attains the upper bound if and only if $w$ avoids $312$ and $321$.
A field-independent filtration of plethystic modules for $\mathrm{SL}_2(\mathbb{F})$ that categorifies a product rule for the Cartan subalgebra of $\mathcal{U}_q(\mathfrak{sl}_2)$
We lift a product rule in the Cartan subalgebra of quantum $\mathfrak{sl}_2$ to a filtration of the plethystic representation $Δ^{(n,m)}\mathrm{Sym}^d E$ of the affine group scheme of the algebraic group $\mathrm{SL}_2$, where $E$ is the natural representation and $Δ^{(n,m)}$ the Weyl functor. This is a significant step towards a categorification of quantum $\mathfrak{sl}_2$. Our filtration is an addition to a growing family of field-independent isomorphisms of $\mathrm{SL}_2$ representations that include Hermite reciprocity and the Wronskian isomorphism. It is the first such field-independent result requiring multiple filtration layers. It is proved by combinatorial techniques using the authors' symmetric functions model for Weyl modules.
Modular isomorphisms of $\mathrm{SL}_2(\mathbb{F})$-plethysms for Weyl modules labelled by hook partitions
Let $Δ^λ$ be the Weyl functor for the partition $λ$ and let $E$ be the natural $2$-dimensional representation of $\mathrm{SL}_2(\mathbb{F})$, where $\mathbb{F}$ is an arbitrary field. We give an explicit isomorphism showing that any $\mathrm{SL}_2(\mathbb{F})$-plethysm $Δ^{(M,1^N)}\mathrm{Sym}^d E$ factors as a tensor product of two simpler $\mathrm{SL}_2(\mathbb{F})$-plethysms, each defined using only symmetric powers. This result categorifies Stanley's Hook Content Formula for hook-shaped partitions and proves a conjecture of Martínez--Wildon (2024). In a similar spirit we categorify the classical binomial identity $\binom{a}{b}\binom{b}{c}=\binom{a}{c}\binom{a-c}{b-c}$, obtaining a new family of $\mathrm{SL}_2(\mathbb{F})$-isomorphisms between tensor products of plethysms. Our methods are characteristic independent and provide a framework that is broadly applicable to the study of isomorphisms between plethystic representations of $\mathrm{SL}_2(\mathbb{F})$.

Schubert polynomials and patterns in permutations
Published • View Publication • BIB
This paper investigates the number of supports of the Schubert polynomial $\mathfrak{S}_w(x)$ indexed by a permutation $w$. This number also equals the number of lattice points in the Newton polytope of $\mathfrak{S}_w(x)$. We establish a lower bound for this number in terms of the occurrences of patterns in $w$. The analysis is carried out in the general framework of dual characters of flagged Weyl modules. Our result considerably improves the bounds for principal specializations of Schubert polynomials or dual flagged Weyl characters previously obtained by Weigandt, Gao, and M{é}sz{á}ros--St. Dizier--Tanjaya. Some problems and conjectures are discussed.
$q$-Whittaker polynomials: bases, branching and direct limits
Published • View Publication • BIB
We study $q$-Whittaker polynomials and their monomial expansions given by the fermionic formula, the inv statistic of Haglund-Haiman-Loehr and the quinv statistic of Ayyer-Mandelshtam-Martin. The combinatorial models underlying these expansions are partition overlaid patterns and column strict fillings. The former model is closely tied to representations of the affine Lie algebra $\widehat{\mathfrak{sl}_n}$ and admits projections, branching maps and direct limits that mirror these structures in the Chari-Loktev basis of local Weyl modules. We formulate novel versions of these notions in the column strict fillings model and establish their main properties. We construct weight-preserving bijections between the models which are compatible with projection, branching and direct limits. We also establish connections to the coloured lattice paths formalism for $q$-Whittaker polynomials due to Wheeler and collaborators.

Zero-one dual characters of flagged Weyl modules
Published • View Publication • BIB
We prove a criterion of when the dual character $χ_{D}(x)$ of the flagged Weyl module associated to a diagram $D$ in the grid $[n]\times [n]$ is zero-one, that is, the coefficients of monomials in $χ_{D}(x)$ are either 0 or 1. This settles a conjecture proposed by M{é}sz{á}ros--St. Dizier--Tanjaya. Since Schubert polynomials and key polynomials occur as special cases of dual flagged Weyl characters, our approach provides a new and unified proof of known criteria for zero-one Schubert/key polynomials due to Fink--M{é}sz{á}ros--St. Dizier and Hodges--Yong, respectively.

On components of the tensor square of a Weyl module
Published • View Publication • BIB
For a simple Lie algebra $\mathfrak{g}$ of type $A_n,B_n,C_n$ or $D_n$, we give a characterization of the set of dominant integral weights $λ$ such that for any rational point $μ$ in the fundamental Weyl chamber, $2λ-μ$ is a non-negative rational combination of the simple roots if and only if $V_{mμ}\subseteq V_{mλ}\otimes V_{mλ}$ for some positive integer $m$.
Monomial expansions for $q$-Whittaker and modified Hall-Littlewood polynomials
We consider the monomial expansion of the $q$-Whittaker polynomials given by the fermionic formula and via the inv and quinv statistics. We construct bijections between the parametrizing sets of these three models which preserve the $x$- and $q$-weights, and which are compatible with natural projection and branching maps. We apply this to the limit construction of local Weyl modules and obtain a new character formula for the basic representation of $\widehat{\mathfrak{sl}_n}$. Finally, we indicate how our main results generalize to the modified Hall-Littlewood case.
Upper bounds of dual flagged Weyl characters
Published • View Publication • BIB
For a subset $D$ of boxes in an $n\times n$ square grid, let $χ_{D}(x)$ denote the dual character of the flagged Weyl module associated to $D$. It is known that $χ_{D}(x)$ specifies to a Schubert polynomial (resp., a key polynomial) in the case when $D$ is the Rothe diagram of a permutation (resp., the skyline diagram of a composition). One can naturally define a lower and an upper bound of $χ_{D}(x)$. M{é}sz{á}ros, St. Dizier and Tanjaya conjectured that $χ_{D}(x)$ attains the upper bound if and only if $D$ avoids a certain subdiagram. We provide a proof of this conjecture.
Peter-Weyl theorem for Iwahori groups and highest weight categories
Published • View Publication • BIB
We study the algebra of functions on the Iwahori group via the category of graded bounded representations of its Lie algebra. In particular, we identify the standard and costandard objects in this category with certain generalized Weyl modules. Using this identification we express the characters of the standard and costandard objects in terms of specialized nonsymmetric Macdonald polynomials. We also prove that our category of interest admits a generalized highest weight structure (known as stratified structure). We show, more generally, that such a structure on a category of representations of a Lie algebra implies the Peter-Weyl type theorem for the corresponding algebraic group. In the Iwahori case, standard filtrations of indecomposable projective objects correspond to new ``reciprocal'' Macdonald-type identities.
M-convexity of Grothendieck polynomials via bubbling
Published • View Publication • BIB
We introduce bubbling diagrams and show that they compute the support of the Grothendieck polynomial of any vexillary permutation. Using these diagrams, we show that the support of the top homogeneous component of such a Grothendieck polynomial coincides with the support of the dual character of an explicit flagged Weyl module. We also show that the homogenized Grothendieck polynomial of a vexillary permutation has M-convex support.

Restricted Partitions and $SL_2$ Cohomology
Published • View Publication • BIB
The aim of this paper is twofold. First, we study the number of partitions of a positive integer $m$ into at most $n$ parts in a given set $A$. We prove that such a number is bounded by the $n$-th Fibonacci number $F(n)$ for any $m$ and some family of sets $A$ including sets of powers of an integer. Then, in the second part of the paper, we provide new results in bounding the cohomology of the simple algebraic group $SL_2$ with coefficients in Weyl modules.

Nonsymmetric $q$-Cauchy identity and representations of the Iwahori algebra
Published • View Publication • BIB
The $t=0$ specialization of the Mimachi-Noumi Cauchy-type identity rewrites certain infinite product in terms of specialized nonsymmetric Macdonald polynomials of type $GL_n$. We interpret the infinite product as a character of the space of functions on a certain matrix space. We show that the space of functions admits a filtration such that the graded pieces are isomorphic to the tensor products of certain generalized global Weyl modules of the Iwahori algebra. We identify the characters of the graded pieces with the terms of the specialized Mimachi-Noumi formula. We conjecture the existence of an analogous filtration on the space of functions on the Iwahori group for all simple Lie algebras and prove the conjecture for $SL_n$. Our construction can be seen as a current algebra extension of the van der Kallen filtration on functions on a Borel subgroup.

Stability theorems for multiplicities in graded $S_n$-modules
In this paper, we prove several stability theorems for multiplicities of naturally defined representations of symmetric groups. The first such theorem states that if we consider the diagonal action of the symmetric group $S_{m+r}$ on $k$ sets of $m+r$ variables, then the dimension of the invariants of degree $m$ is the same as the dimension of the invariants of degree $m$ for $S_{m}$ acting on $k$ sets of $m$ variables. Building on this stability, the last section looks at the Hilbert series of coinvariants of the polynomial ring in $k$ sets of $m$ variables. We address a conjecture that the Hilbert series, in degrees no more than $m$, can be computed by a truncated power series expression. Using some auxiliary results and manipulations of power series, we show that if this holds for $k$ and $m$, then the truncation gives the correct Hilbert series up to degree $m$ for $k$ sets of $n \geq m$ variables. This shows the validity of the conjecture up to certain degrees. We also provide a new equivalent conjecture regarding Gröbner bases. The second type of stability result is for Weyl modules. We prove that the dimension of the $S_{m+r}$ invariants for a Weyl module ${}_{m+r}F^λ$ (the Schur-Weyl dual of the $S_{|λ|}$ module $V^λ$) with $\left\vert λ\right\vert \leq m$ is of the same dimension as the space of $S_{m}$ invariants for ${}_{m}F^λ$. Multigraded versions of the first type of result are given, as are multigraded generalizations to non-trivial modules of symmetric groups.
Newell-Littlewood numbers III: eigencones and GIT-semigroups
Published • View Publication • BIB
The Newell-Littlewood numbers are tensor product multiplicities of Weyl modules for the classical groups in the stable range. Littlewood-Richardson coefficients form a special case. Klyachko connected eigenvalues of sums of Hermitian matrices to the saturated LR-cone and established defining linear inequalities. We prove analogues for the saturated NL-cone: an eigenvalue interpretation; a minimal list of defining linear inequalities; a description by Extended Horn inequalities, as conjectured in part II of this series; and a factorization of NL-numbers, on the boundary.
Principal specialization of dual characters of flagged Weyl modules
Schur polynomials are special cases of Schubert polynomials, which in turn are special cases of dual characters of flagged Weyl modules. The principal specialization of Schur and Schubert polynomials has a long history, with Macdonald famously expressing the principal specialization of any Schubert polynomial in terms of reduced words. We study the principal specialization of dual characters of flagged Weyl~modules. Our result yields an alternative proof of a conjecture of Stanley about the principal specialization of Schubert polynomials, originally proved by Weigandt.

Newell-Littlewood numbers II: extended Horn inequalities
Published in Algebr. Comb. 5 (2022), no. 6, 1287-1297 • View Publication • BIB
The Newell-Littlewood numbers $N_{μ,ν,λ}$ are tensor product multiplicities of Weyl modules for classical Lie groups, in the stable limit. For which triples of partitions $(μ,ν,λ)$ does $N_{μ,ν,λ}>0$ hold? The Littlewood-Richardson coefficient case is solved by the Horn inequalities (in work of A. Klyachko and A. Knutson-T. Tao). We extend these celebrated linear inequalities to a much larger family, suggesting a general solution.

Newell-Littlewood numbers
Published in Trans. Amer. Math. Soc. 374 (2021), 6331-6366 • View Publication • BIB
The Newell-Littlewood numbers are defined in terms of their celebrated cousins, the Littlewood-Richardson coefficients. Both arise as tensor product multiplicities for a classical Lie group. They are the structure coefficients of the K. Koike-I. Terada basis of the ring of symmetric functions. Recent work of H. Hahn studies them, motivated by R. Langlands' beyond endoscopy proposal; we address her work with a simple characterization of detection of Weyl modules. This motivates further study of the combinatorics of the numbers. We consider analogues of ideas of J. De Loera-T. McAllister, H. Derksen-J. Weyman, S. Fomin-W. Fulton-C.-K. Li-Y.-T. Poon, W. Fulton, R. King-C. Tollu-F. Toumazet, M. Kleber, A. Klyachko, A.
