Generalized Foulkes modules and maximal and minimal constituents of plethysms of Schur functions
Published • View Publication • BIB
This paper proves a combinatorial rule giving all maximal and minimal partitions $λ$ such that the Schur function $s_λ$ appears in a plethysm of two arbitrary Schur functions. Determining the decomposition of these plethysms has been identified by Stanley as a key open problem in algebraic combinatorics. As corollaries we prove three conjectures of Agaoka on the partitions labelling the lexicographically greatest and least Schur functions appearing in an arbitrary plethysm. We also show that the multiplicity of the Schur function labelled by the lexicographically least constituent may be arbitrarily large. The proof is carried out in the symmetric group and gives an explicit non-zero homomorphism corresponding to each maximal or minimal partition.

Quasi-matroidal classes of ordered simplicial complexes
Published • View Publication • BIB
We introduce the notion of a quasi-matroidal class of ordered simplicial complexes: an approximation to the idea of a matroid cryptomorphism in the landscape of ordered simplicial complexes. A quasi-matroidal class contains pure shifted simplicial complexes and ordered matroid independence complexes. The essential property is that if a fixed simplicial complex belongs to this class for every ordering of its vertex set, then it is a matroid independence complex. Some examples of such classes appear implicitly in the matroid theory literature. We introduce various such classes that highlight different apsects of matroid theory and its similarities with the theory of shifted simplicial complexes. For example, we lift the study of objects like the Tutte polynomial and nbc complexes to a quasi-matroidal class that allows us to define such objects for shifted complexes. Furthermore, some of the quasi-matroidal classes are amenable to inductive techniques that can't be applied directly in the context of matroid theory. As an example, we provide a suitable setting to reformulate and extend conjecture of Stanley about $h$-vectors of matroids which is expected to be tractable with techniques that are out of reach for matroids alone. This new conjecture holds for pure shifted simplicial complexes and matroids of rank up to 4.

Special classes of $q$-bracket operators
Published in Ramanujan Journal 47.2 (2018): 309-316 • View Publication • BIB
We study the $q$-bracket operator of Bloch and Okounkov when applied to $f(λ)=\sum_{λ_i \in λ}g(λ_i)$ and $f(λ)=\sum_{\substack{λ_i \in λλ_i \text{distinct} }}g(λ_i)$. We use these expansions to derive convolution identities for the functions $f$ and link both classes of $q$-brackets through divisor sums. As a result, we generalize Euler's classic convolution identity for the partition function and obtain an analogous identity for the totient function. As corollaries, we generalize Stanley's theorem as well as provide several new combinatorial results.

Two double poset polytopes
Published • View Publication • BIB
To every poset P, Stanley (1986) associated two polytopes, the order polytope and the chain polytope, whose geometric properties reflect the combinatorial qualities of P. This construction allows for deep insights into combinatorics by way of geometry and vice versa. Malvenuto and Reutenauer (2011) introduced 'double posets', that is, (finite) sets equipped with two partial orders, as a generalization of Stanley's labelled posets. Many combinatorial constructions can be naturally phrased in terms of double posets. We introduce the 'double order polytope' and the 'double chain polytope' and we amply demonstrate that they geometrically capture double posets, i.e., the interaction between the two partial orders. We describe the facial structures, Ehrhart polynomials, and volumes of these polytopes in terms of the combinatorics of double posets. We also describe a curious connection to Geissinger's valuation polytopes and we characterize 2-level polytopes among our double poset polytopes. Fulkerson's 'anti-blocking' polytopes from combinatorial optimization subsume stable set polytopes of graphs and chain polytopes of posets. We determine the geometry of Minkowski- and Cayley sums of anti-blocking polytopes. In particular, we describe a canonical subdivision of Minkowski sums of anti-blocking polytopes that facilitates the computation of Ehrhart (quasi-)polynomials and volumes. This also yields canonical triangulations of double poset polytopes. Finally, we investigate the affine semigroup rings associated to double poset polytopes. We show that they have quadratic Groebner bases, which gives an algebraic description of the unimodular flag triangulations described in the first part.

The symmetric group action on rank-selected posets of injective words
Published • View Publication • BIB
The symmetric group $\mathfrak{S}_n$ acts naturally on the poset of injective words over the alphabet $\{1, 2,\dots,n\}$. The induced representation on the homology of this poset has been computed by Reiner and Webb. We generalize their result by computing the representation of $\mathfrak{S}_n$ on the homology of all rank-selected subposets, in the sense of Stanley. A further generalization to the poset of $r$-colored injective words is given.

Three conjectures in extremal spectral graph theory
Published • View Publication • BIB
We prove three conjectures regarding the maximization of spectral invariants over certain families of graphs. Our most difficult result is that the join of $P_2$ and $P_{n-2}$ is the unique graph of maximum spectral radius over all planar graphs. This was conjectured by Boots and Royle in 1991 and independently by Cao and Vince in 1993. Similarly, we prove a conjecture of Cvetković and Rowlinson from 1990 stating that the unique outerplanar graph of maximum spectral radius is the join of a vertex and $P_{n-1}$. Finally, we prove a conjecture of Aouchiche et al from 2008 stating that a pineapple graph is the unique connected graph maximizing the spectral radius minus the average degree. To prove our theorems, we use the leading eigenvector of a purported extremal graph to deduce structural properties about that graph. Using this setup, we give short proofs of several old results: Mantel's Theorem, Stanley's edge bound and extensions, the Kővari-Sós-Turán Theorem applied to $\mathrm{ex}\left(n, K_{2,t}\right)$, and a partial solution to an old problem of Erdős on making a triangle-free graph bipartite.
The Laurent coefficients of the Hilbert series of a Gorenstein algebra
Published in Experimental Mathematics 30 (2021), 56--75 • View Publication • BIB
By a theorem of R. Stanley, a graded Cohen-Macaulay domain $A$ is Gorenstein if and only if its Hilbert series satisfies the functional equation \[ \operatorname{Hilb}_A(t^{-1})=(-1)^d t^{-a}\operatorname{Hilb}_A(t), \] where $d$ is the Krull dimension and $a$ is the a-invariant of $A$. We reformulate this functional equation in terms of an infinite system of linear constraints on the Laurent coefficients of $\operatorname{Hilb}_A(t)$ at $t=1$. The main idea consists of examining the graded algebra $\mathcal F=\bigoplus_{r\in \mathbb{Z}}\mathcal F_r$ of formal power series in the variable $x$ that fulfill the condition $\varphi(x/(x-1))=(1-x)^r\varphi(x)$. As a byproduct, we derive quadratic and cubic relations for the Bernoulli numbers. The cubic relations have a natural interpretation in terms of coefficients of the Euler polynomials. For the special case of degree $r=-(a+d)=0$, these results have been investigated previously by the authors and involved merely even Euler polynomials. A link to the work of H. W. Gould and L. Carlitz on power sums of symmetric number triangles is established.

Generalized Whitney formulas for broken circuits in ambigraphs and matroids
We explore several generalizations of Whitney's theorem -- a classical formula for the chromatic polynomial of a graph. Following Stanley, we replace the chromatic polynomial by the chromatic symmetric function. Following Dohmen and Trinks, we exclude not all but only an (arbitrarily selected) set of broken circuits, or even weigh these broken circuits with weight monomials instead of excluding them. Following Crew and Spirkl, we put weights on the vertices of the graph. Following Gebhard and Sagan, we lift the chromatic symmetric function to noncommuting variables. In addition, we replace the graph by an "ambigraph", an apparently new concept that includes both hypergraphs and multigraphs as particular cases. We show that Whitney's formula endures all these generalizations, and a fairly simple sign-reversing involution can be used to prove it in each setting. Furthermore, if we restrict ourselves to the chromatic polynomial, then the graph can be replaced by a matroid. We discuss an application to transitive digraphs (i.e., posets), and reprove an alternating-sum identity by Dahlberg and van Willigenburg.

Depth, Stanley depth and regularity of ideals associated to graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $\mathbb{K}$ be a field and $S=\mathbb{K}[x_1,\dots,x_n]$ be the polynomial ring in $n$ variables over $\mathbb{K}$. Let $G$ be a graph with $n$ vertices. Assume that $I=I(G)$ is the edge ideal of $G$ and $J=J(G)$ is its cover ideal. We prove that ${\rm sdepth}(J)\geq n-ν_{o}(G)$ and ${\rm sdepth}(S/J)\geq n-ν_{o}(G)-1$, where $ν_{o}(G)$ is the ordered matching number of $G$. We also prove the inequalities ${\rm sdepth}(J^k)\geq {\rm depth}(J^k)$ and ${\rm sdepth}(S/J^k)\geq {\rm depth}(S/J^k)$, for every integer $k\gg 0$, when $G$ is a bipartite graph. Moreover, we provide an elementary proof for the known inequality ${\rm reg}(S/I)\leq ν_{o}(G)$.

Schubert polynomials, slide polynomials, Stanley symmetric functions and quasi-Yamanouchi pipe dreams
Published • View Publication • BIB
We introduce two new bases for polynomials that lift monomial and fundamental quasisymmetric functions to the full polynomial ring. By defining a new condition on pipe dreams, called quasi-Yamanouchi, we give a positive combinatorial rule for expanding Schubert polynomials into these new bases that parallels the expansion of Schur functions into fundamental quasisymmetric functions. As a result, we obtain a refinement of the stable limits of Schubert polynomials to Stanley symmetric functions. We also give combinatorial rules for the positive structure constants of these bases that generalize the quasi-shuffle product and shuffle product, respectively. We use this to give a Littlewood--Richardson rule for expanding a product of Schubert polynomials into fundamental slide polynomials and to give formulas for products of Stanley symmetric functions in terms of Schubert structure constants.

The unimodality of the Ehrhart $δ$-polynomial of the chain polytope of the zig-zag poset
We prove the unimodality of the Ehrhart $δ$-polynomial of the chain polytope of the zig-zag poset, which was conjectured by Kirillov. First, based on a result due to Stanley, we show that this polynomial coincides with the $W$-polynomial for the zig-zag poset with some natural labeling. Then, its unimodality immediately follows from a result of Gasharov, which states that the $W$-polynomials of naturally labeled graded posets of rank $1$ or $2$ are unimodal.

Elementary symmetric polynomials in Stanley--Reisner face ring
Let $P$ be a simple polytope of dimension $n$ with $m$ facets. In this paper we pay our attention on those elementary symmetric polynomials in the Stanley--Reisner face ring of $P$ and study how the decomposability of the $n$-th elementary symmetric polynomial influences on the combinatorics of $P$ and the topology and geometry of toric spaces over $P$. We give algebraic criterions of detecting the decomposability of $P$ and determining when $P$ is $n$-colorable in terms of the $n$-th elementary symmetric polynomial. In addition, we define the Stanley--Reisner {\em exterior} face ring $\mathcal{E}(K_P)$ of $P$, which is non-commutative in the case of ${\Bbb Z}$ coefficients, where $K_P$ is the boundary complex of dual of $P$. Then we obtain a criterion for the (real) Buchstaber invariant of $P$ to be $m-n$ in terms of the $n$-th elementary symmetric polynomial in $\mathcal{E}(K_P)$. Our results as above can directly associate with the topology and geometry of toric spaces over $P$. In particular, we show that the decomposability of the $n$-th elementary symmetric polynomial in $\mathcal{E}(K_P)$ with ${\Bbb Z}$ coefficients can detect the existence of the almost complex structures of quasitoric manifolds over $P$, and if the (real) Buchstaber invariant of $P$ is $m-n$, then there exists an essential relation between the $n$-th equivariant characteristic class of the (real) moment-angle manifold over $P$ in $\mathcal{E}(K_P)$ and the characteristic functions of $P$.

A Duality in Buchsbaum rings and triangulated manifolds
Published in Alg. Number Th. 11 (2017) 635-656 • View Publication • BIB
Let $Δ$ be a triangulated homology ball whose boundary complex is $\partialΔ$. A result of Hochster asserts that the canonical module of the Stanley--Reisner ring of $Δ$, $\mathbb F[Δ]$, is isomorphic to the Stanley--Reisner module of the pair $(Δ, \partialΔ)$, $\mathbb F[Δ,\partial Δ]$. This result implies that an Artinian reduction of $\mathbb F[Δ,\partial Δ]$ is (up to a shift in grading) isomorphic to the Matlis dual of the corresponding Artinian reduction of $\mathbb F[Δ]$. We establish a generalization of this duality to all triangulations of connected orientable homology manifolds with boundary. We also provide an explicit algebraic interpretation of the $h"$-numbers of Buchsbaum complexes and use it to prove the monotonicity of $h"$-numbers for pairs of Buchsbaum complexes as well as the unimodality of $h"$-vectors of barycentric subdivisions of Buchsbaum polyhedral complexes. We close with applications to the algebraic manifold $g$-conjecture.

Schubert polynomials and degeneracy locus formulas
Published • View Publication • BIB
In our previous work arXiv:1305.3543, we employed the approach to Schubert polynomials by Fomin, Stanley, and Kirillov to obtain simple, uniform proofs that the double Schubert polynomials of Lascoux and Schutzenberger and Ikeda, Mihalcea, and Naruse represent degeneracy loci for the classical groups in the sense of Fulton. Using this as our starting point, and purely combinatorial methods, we obtain a new proof of the general formulas of arXiv:0908.3628, which represent the degeneracy loci coming from any isotropic partial flag variety. Along the way, we also find several new formulas and elucidate the connections between some earlier ones.

Polynomiality of some hook-content summations for doubled distinct and self-conjugate partitions
Published • View Publication • BIB
In 2009, the first author proved the Nekrasov-Okounkov formula on hook lengths for integer partitions by using an identity of Macdonald in the framework of type $\widetilde A$ affine root systems, and conjectured that some summations over the set of all partitions of size $n$ are always polynomials in $n$. This conjecture was generalized and proved by Stanley. Recently, Pétréolle derived two Nekrasov-Okounkov type formulas for $\widetilde C$ and $\widetilde C\,\check{}$ which involve doubled distinct and self-conjugate partitions. Inspired by all those previous works, we establish the polynomiality of some hook-content summations for doubled distinct and self-conjugate partitions.
Euler characteristic reciprocity for chromatic, flow and order polynomials
Published in Journal of Singularities 16 (2017), 212-227 • View Publication • BIB
The Euler characteristic of a semialgebraic set can be considered as a generalization of the cardinality of a finite set. An advantage of semialgebraic sets is that we can define "negative sets" to be the sets with negative Euler characteristics. Applying this idea to posets, we introduce the notion of semialgebraic posets. Using "negative posets", we establish Stanley's reciprocity theorems for order polynomials at the level of Euler characteristics. We also formulate the Euler characteristic reciprocities for chromatic and flow polynomials.

Block Stanley decompositions I. Elementary and gnomon decompositions
Published in J. of Pure and Applied Algebra 219 (2015) 2189-2205 • View Publication • BIB
Stanley decompositions are used in invariant theory and the theory of normal forms for dynamical systems to provide a unique way of writing each invariant as a polynomial in the Hilbert basis elements. Since the required Stanley decompositions can be very long, we introduce a more concise notation called a block decomposition, along with three notions of shortness (incompressibility, minimality of Stanley spaces, and minimality of blocks) for block decompositions. We give two algorithms that generate different block decompositions, which we call elementary and gnomon decompositions, and give examples. Soleyman-Jahan's criterion for a Stanley decomposition to come from a prime filtration is reformulated to apply to block decompositions. We simplify his proof, and apply the theorem to show that elementary and gnomon decompositions come from "subprime" filtrations. In a sequel to this paper we will introduce two additional algorithms that generate block decompositions that may not always be subprime, but are always incompressible.

Stanley's nonunimodal Gorenstein h-vector is optimal
Published in Proc. AMS 145 (2017), no. 1, 1--9 • View Publication • BIB
We classify all possible $h$-vectors of graded artinian Gorenstein algebras in socle degree 4 and codimension $\leq 17$, and in socle degree 5 and codimension $\leq 25$. We obtain as a consequence that the least number of variables allowing the existence of a nonunimodal Gorenstein $h$-vector is 13 for socle degree 4, and 17 for socle degree 5. In particular, the smallest nonunimodal Gorenstein $h$-vector is $(1,13,12,13,1)$, which was constructed by Stanley in his 1978 seminal paper on level algebras. This solves a long-standing open question in this area. All of our results are characteristic free.

On the combinatorial local log-concavity conjecture and a result of Stanley
The purpose of this note is to explain that the combinatorial local log-concavity conjecture introduced by Gross, Mansour, Tucker and Wang (Eur. J. Comb. 52, 207-222, 2016) in fact follows from a result of Stanley (Eur. J. Comb. 32 (6), 937-943, 2011).
