An involution in a Coxeter group has an associated set of involution words, a variation on reduced words. These words are saturated chains in a partial order first considered by Richardson and Springer in their study of symmetric varieties. In the symmetric group, involution words can be enumerated in terms of tableaux using appropriate analogues of the symmetric functions introduced by Stanley to accomplish the same task for reduced words. We adapt this approach to the group of signed permutations. We show that involution words for the longest element in the Coxeter group $C_n$ are in bijection with reduced words for the longest element in $A_n = S_{n+1}$, which are known to be in bijection with standard tableaux of shape $(n, n-1, \ldots, 2, 1)$.

We say a polytope is Ehrhart positive if all the coefficients in its Ehrhart polynomial are positive. Answering an Ehrhart positivity question posed on Mathoverflow, Stanley provided an example of a non-Ehrhart-positive order polytope of dimension $21$. Stanley's example comes from a certain family of order polytopes. In this paper, we study the Ehrhart positivity question on this family of polytopes. By giving explicit formulas for the coefficients of the Ehrhart polynomials of these polytopes in terms of Bernolli numbers, we determine the sign of each Ehrhart coefficient of each polytope in the family.
As a consequence of our result, we conclude that for any positive integer $d \ge 21,$ there exists an order polytope of dimension $d$ that is not Ehrhart positive, and for any positive integer $\ell$, there exists an order polytope whose Ehrhart polynomial has precisely $\ell$ negative coefficients, which answers a question posed by Hibi. We finish this article by discussing the existence of lower-dimensional order polytopes whose Ehrhart polynomials have a negative coefficient.

We study the gaps $Δp_n$ between consecutive rank sizes in $r$-differential posets by introducing a projection operator whose matrix entries can be expressed in terms of the number of certain paths in the Hasse diagram. We strengthen Miller's result that $Δp_n \geq 1$, which resolved a longstanding conjecture of Stanley, by showing that $Δp_n \geq 2r$. We also obtain stronger bounds in the case that the poset has many substructures called threads.
On power ideals of transversal matroids and their "parking functions"

To a vector configuration one can associate a polynomial ideal generated by powers of linear forms, known as a power ideal, which exhibits many combinatorial features of the matroid underlying the configuration.
In this note we observe that certain power ideals associated to transversal matroids are, somewhat unexpectedly, monomial. Moreover, the (monomial) basis elements of the quotient ring defined by such a power ideal can be naturally identified with the lattice points of a remarkable convex polytope: a polymatroid, also known as generalized permutohedron. We dub the exponent vectors of these monomial basis elements "parking functions" of the corresponding transversal matroid.
We highlight the connection between our investigation and Stanley-Reisner theory, and relate our findings to Stanley's conjectured necessary condition on matroid $h$-vectors.

Denote by $u(n)$ the largest principal specialization of the Schubert polynomial: $
u(n) := \max_{w \in S_n} \mathfrak{S}_w(1,\ldots,1) $ Stanley conjectured in [arXiv:1704.00851] that there is a limit $\lim_{n\to \infty} \, \frac{1}{n^2} \log u(n), $ and asked for a limiting description of permutations achieving the maximum $u(n)$. Merzon and Smirnov conjectured in [arXiv:1410.6857] that this maximum is achieved on layered permutations. We resolve both Stanley's problems restricted to layered permutations.
Asymptotic results for Representation Theory
Representation theory of finite groups portrays a marvelous crossroad of group theory, algebraic combinatorics, and probability. In particular the Plancherel measure is a probability that arises naturally from representation theory, and in this thesis we consider three ramifications of asymptotic questions for random Plancherel distributed representations. First we recall irreducible characters of the symmetric group, which are indexed by integer partitions. We focus on the so called 'dual approach', in which the partition indexing a character is now considered to be the variable. We extend a famous result of Kerov on the asymptotic of Plancherel distributed characters by studying partial trace and partial sum of a representation matrix. We decompose each of these objects into a main term and a remainder, and in each case we prove a central limit theorem for the main term. We apply these results to prove a law of large numbers for the partial sum. In the second part we consider projective representations of the symmetric group by converting a multirectangular approach developed by Stanley for the classical case. In particular, we present a positivity conjecture for the coefficients of the renormalized projective character, written as a polynomial in a new set of coordinates. We prove the positivity for the leading term of the polynomial. In the last part of the thesis we recall the theory of supercharacters, which is an alternative tool to representation theory when the classical approach proves to be intractable. We show that a generalization of the Plancherel measure, called the superplancherel measure, arises naturally. We focus on a particular supercharacter theory for the upper unitriangular group in which supercharacters are indexed by set partitions. We prove a limit shape result for a random set partition according to this distribution.
Levelness of Order Polytopes

Since their introduction by Stanley~\cite{StanleyOrderPoly} order polytopes have been intriguing mathematicians as their geometry can be used to examine (algebraic) properties of finite posets. In this paper, we follow this route to examine the levelness property of order polytopes. The levelness property was also introduced by Stanley~\cite{Stanley-CM-complexes} and it generalizes the Gorenstein property. This property has been recently characterized by Miyazaki~\cite{Miyazaki} for the case of order polytopes. We provide an alternative characterization using weighted digraphs. Using this characterization, we give a new infinite family of level posets and show that determining levelness is in $\operatorname{co-NP}$. This family can be used to create infinitely many examples illustrating that the levelness property can not be characterized by the $h^{\ast}$-vector. We then turn to the more general family of alcoved polytopes. We give a characterization for levelness of alcoved polytopes using the Minkowski sum. Then we study several cases when the product of two polytopes is level. In particular, we provide an example where the product of two level polytopes is not level.

We give new bounds and asymptotic estimates for Kronecker and Littlewood--Richardson coefficients. Notably, we resolve Stanley's questions on the shape of partitions attaining the largest Kronecker and Littlewood--Richardson coefficients. We apply the results to asymptotics of the number of standard Young tableaux of skew shapes.

We introduce several classes of polytopes contained in $[0,1]^n$ and cut out by inequalities involving sums of consecutive coordinates. We show that the normalized volumes of these polytopes enumerate circular extensions of certain partial cyclic orders. Among other things this gives a new point of view on a question popularized by Stanley. We also provide a combinatorial interpretation of the Ehrhart $h^*$-polynomials of some of these polytopes in terms of descents of total cyclic orders. The Euler numbers, the Eulerian numbers and the Narayana numbers appear as special cases.

Consider these two distinct combinatorial objects: (1) the necklaces of length $n$ with at most $q$ colors, and (2) the multisets of integers modulo $n$ with subset sum divisible by $n$ and with the multiplicity of each element being strictly less than $q$. We show that these two objects have the same cardinality when $q$ and $n$ are mutually coprime. Additionally, when $q$ is a prime power, we construct a bijection between these two objects by viewing necklaces as cyclic polynomials over the finite field of size $q$. Specializing to $q=2$ answers a bijective problem posed by Richard Stanley.

We prove some new rank selection theorems for balanced simplicial complexes. Specifically, we prove that rank selected subcomplexes of balanced simplicial complexes satisfying Serre's condition $(S_{\ell})$ retain $(S_{\ell})$. We also provide a formula for the depth of a balanced simplicial complex in terms of reduced homologies of its rank selected subcomplexes. By passing to a barycentric subdivision, our results give information about Serre's condition and the depth of any simplicial compex. Our results extend rank selection theorems for depth proved by Stanley, Munkres, and Hibi.
Some results on counting linearizations of posets
In section 1 we consider a 3-tuple $S=(|S|,\preccurlyeq,E)$ where $|S|$ is a finite set, $\preccurlyeq$ a partial ordering on $|S|,$ and $E$ a set of unordered pairs of distinct members of $|S|,$ and study, as a function of $n\geq 0,$ the number of maps $\varphi:|S|\to\{1,\dots,n\}$ which are both isotone with respect to the ordering $\preccurlyeq,$ and have the property that $\varphi(x)\neq \varphi(y)$ whenever $\{x,y\}\in E.$ We prove a number-theoretic result about this function, and use it in section 7 to recover a ring-theoretic identity of G. P. Hochschild.
In section 2 we generalize a result of R. Stanley on the sign-imbalance of posets in which the lengths of all maximal chains have the same parity.
In sections 3-6 we study the linearization-count and sign-imbalance of a lexicographic sum of $n$ finite posets $P_i$ $(1\leq i\leq n)$ over an $n$-element poset $P_0.$ We note how to compute these values from the corresponding counts for the given posets $P_i,$ and for a lexicographic sum over $P_0$ of chains of lengths $\mathrm{card}(P_i).$ This makes the behavior of lexicographic sums of chains over a finite poset $P_0$ of interest, and we obtain some general results on the linearization-count and sign-imbalance of these objects.
On an Algorithm for Comparing the Chromatic Symmetric Functions of Trees
It is a long-standing question of Stanley whether or not the chromatic symmetric function (CSF) distinguishes unrooted trees. Previously, the best computational result, due to Russell, proved that it distinguishes all trees with at most $25$ vertices. In this paper, we present a novel probabilistic algorithm which may be used to check more efficiently that the CSF distinguishes a set of trees. Applying it, we verify that the CSF distinguishes all trees with up to $29$ vertices.

The $q$-analogue of the binomial coefficient, known as a $q$-binomial coefficient, is typically denoted $\left[{n \atop k}\right]_q$. These polynomials are important combinatorial objects, often appearing in generating functions related to permutations and in representation theory. Stanley conjectured that the function $f_{k,R}(n) = \#\left\{i : [q^{i}] \left[{n \atop k}\right]_q \equiv R \pmod{N}\right\}$ is quasipolynomial for $N=2$. We generalize, showing that this is in fact true for any integer $N\in \mathbb{N}$ and determine a quasi-period $π'_N(k)$ derived from the minimal period $π_N(k)$ of partitions with at most $k$ parts modulo $N$.
Spanning Lattice Polytopes and the Uniform Position Principle
A lattice polytope $P$ is called IDP if any lattice point in its $k$th dilate is a sum of $k$ lattice points in $P$. In 1991 Stanley proved a strong inequality in Ehrhart theory for IDP lattice polytopes. We show that his conclusion holds under much milder assumptions, namely if the lattice polytope $P$ is spanning, i.e., any lattice point of the ambient lattice is an integer affine combination of lattice points in $P$. As an application, we get a generalization of Hibi's Lower Bound Theorem. Our proof relies on generalizing Bertini's theorem to the semistandard situation and Harris' Uniform Position Principle to certain curves in weighted projective space.

The $e$-positivity conjecture and the $e$-unimodality conjecture of chromatic quasisymmetric functions are proved for some classes of natural unit interval orders. Recently, J. Shareshian and M. Wachs introduced chromatic quasisymmetric functions as a refinement of Stanley's chromatic symmetric functions and conjectured the $e$-positivity and the $e$-unimodality of these functions. The $e$-positivity of chromatic quasisymmetric functions implies the $e$-positivity of corresponding chromatic symmetric functions, and our work resolves Stanley's conjecture on chromatic symmetric functions of $(3+1)$-free posets for two classes of natural unit interval orders.

In a recent paper, Duval, Goeckner, Klivans and Martin disproved the longstanding conjecture by Stanley, that every Cohen-Macaulay simplicial complex is partitionable. We construct counterexamples to this conjecture that are even \emph{balanced}, i.e., their underlying graph has a minimal coloring. This answers a question by Duval et al. in the negative.

Recently, motivated by Stanley sequences, Kiss, S\' andor and Yang introduced a new type sequence: a sequence $A$ of nonnegative integers is called an $AP_k$ - covering sequence if there exists an integer $n_0$ such that if $n > n_0$, then there exist $a_1\in A, \dots , a_{k-1}\in A$, $a_1<a_2<\cdots <a_{k-1}<n$ such that $a_1, \dots , a_{k-1}, n$ form a $k$-term arithmetic progression. They prove that there exists an $AP_3$ - covering sequence $A$ such that $\limsup\limits_{n\to\infty}{A(n)}/{\sqrt n}\le 34$. In this note, we prove that there exists an $AP_3$ - covering sequence $A$ such that $\limsup\limits_{n\to\infty}{A(n)}/{\sqrt n}=\sqrt{15}$.
Doppelgangers: the Ur-Operation and Posets of Bounded Height
In the early 1970's, Richard Stanley and Kenneth Johnson introduced and laid the groundwork for studying the order polynomial of partially ordered sets (posets). Decades later, Hamaker, Patrias, Pechenik, and Williams introduced the term "doppelgangers": equivalence classes of posets under the equivalence relation given by equality of the order polynomial. We provide necessary and sufficient conditions on doppelgangers through application of both old and novel tools, including new recurrences and the Ur-operation: a new generalized poset operation. In addition, we prove that the doppelgangers of posets P of bounded height $|P|-k$ may be classified up to systems of $k$ diophantine equations in $2^{O(k^2)}$ time, and similarly that the order polynomial of such posets may be computed in $O(|P|)$ time.

A new algorithm for inserting rim-hooks into reverse plane partitions is presented. The insertion is used to define a bijection between reverse plane partitions of a fixed shape and multi-sets of rim-hooks. In turn this yields a bijective proof of the fact that the generating function for reverse plane partitions of a fixed shape, which was first obtained by R. Stanley, factors into a product featuring the hook-lengths of this shape. Our bijection turns out to be equivalent to a map defined by I. Pak by different means, and can be related to the Hillman-Grassl correspondence and the Robinson-Schensted-Knuth correspondence.
