Using a result of Gessel and Reutenauer, we find a simple formula for the number of cyclic permutations with a given descent set, by expressing it in terms of ordinary descent numbers (i.e., those counting all permutations with a given descent set). We then use this formula to show that, for almost all sets $I \subseteq [n-1]$, the fraction of size-$n$ permutations with descent set $I$ which are $n$-cycles is asymptotically $1/n$. As a special case, we recover a result of Stanley for alternating cycles. We also use our formula to count the cycles that do not have two consecutive descents.

D. Grigoriev-G. Koshevoy recently proved that tropical Schur polynomials have (at worst) polynomial tropical semiring complexity. They also conjectured tropical skew Schur polynomials have at least exponential complexity; we establish a polynomial complexity upper bound. Our proof uses results about (stable) Schubert polynomials, due to R. P. Stanley and S. Billey-W. Jockusch-R. P. Stanley, together with a sufficient condition for polynomial complexity that is connected to the saturated Newton polytope property.
A New Proof for a Triple Product Formula for Plane Partitions
Stanley generalized MacMahon's classical theorem by proving a product formula for the norm-trace generating function for plane partition with unbounded parts. In his recent work on biothorgonal polynomials, Kamioka proved a finite analogue of Stanley's formula for plane partitions with bounded parts (arXiv:1508.01674). In this paper, we use techniques from the enumeration of tilings to give a new proof for Kamioka's formula.

There are a large number of theorems detailing the homological properties of the Stanley--Reisner ring of a simplicial complex. Here we attempt to generalize some of these results to the case of a simplicial poset. By investigating the combinatorics of certain modules associated with the face ring of a simplicial poset from a topological viewpoint, we extend some results of Miyazaki and Gräbe to a wider setting.

In this paper, we analyze the toggle group on the set of antichains of a poset. Toggle groups, generated by simple involutions, were first introduced by Cameron and Fon-Der-Flaass for order ideals of posets. Recently Striker has motivated the study of toggle groups on general families of subsets, including antichains. This paper expands on this work by examining the relationship between the toggle groups of antichains and order ideals, constructing an explicit isomorphism between the two groups. We also focus on the rowmotion action that has been well-studied in dynamical algebraic combinatorics, describing it as the composition of antichain toggles. We also describe a piecewise-linear analogue of toggling to Stanley's chain polytope. We examine the connections with the piecewise-linear toggling Einstein and Propp introduced for order polytopes and prove that almost all of our results for antichain toggles extend to the piecewise-linear setting.

Generalized permutahedra are a family of polytopes with a rich combinatorial structure and strong connections to optimization. We prove that they are the universal family of polyhedra with a certain Hopf algebraic structure. Their antipode is remarkably simple: the antipode of a polytope is the alternating sum of its faces. Our construction provides a unifying framework to organize numerous combinatorial structures, including graphs, matroids, posets, set partitions, linear graphs, hypergraphs, simplicial complexes, building sets, and simple graphs. We highlight three applications:
1. We obtain uniform proofs of numerous old and new results about the Hopf algebraic and combinatorial structures of these families. In particular, we give the optimal formula for the antipode of graphs, posets, matroids, hypergraphs, and building sets, and we answer questions of Humpert--Martin and Rota.
2. We show that the reciprocity theorems of Stanley and Billera--Jia--Reiner on chromatic polynomials of graphs, order polynomials of posets, and BJR-polynomials of matroids are instances of the same reciprocity theorem for generalized permutahedra.
3. We explain why the formulas for the multiplicative and compositional inverses of power series are governed by the face structure of permutahedra and associahedra, respectively, answering a question of Loday.
Along the way, we offer a combinatorial user's guide to Hopf monoids.

We define a subclass of Hessenberg varieties called abelian Hessenberg varieties, inspired by the theory of abelian ideals in a Lie algebra developed by Kostant and Peterson. We give an inductive formula for the $S_n$-representation on the cohomology of an abelian regular semisimple Hessenberg variety with respect to the action defined by Tymoczko. Our result implies that a graded version of the Stanley-Stembridge conjecture holds in the abelian case, and generalizes results obtained by Shareshian-Wachs and Teff. Our proof uses previous work of Stanley, Gasharov, Shareshian-Wachs, and Brosnan-Chow, as well as results of the second author on the geometry and combinatorics of Hessenberg varieties. As part of our arguments, we obtain inductive formulas for the Poincaré polynomials of regular abelian Hessenberg varieties.
Stanley-Reisner rings for quasi-arithmetic matroids
In this note we define a Stanley-Reisner ring for quasi-arithmetic matroids and more general structures. To this end, we define two types of CW complexes associated with a quasi-arithmetic matroid that generalize independence complexes of matroids. Then we use Stanley's construction of Stanley-Reisner rings for simplicial posets.

Let $G$ be a graph with $n$ vertices and let $S=\mathbb{K}[x_1,\dots,x_n]$ be the polynomial ring in $n$ variables over a field $\mathbb{K}$. Assume that $J(G)$ is the cover ideal of $G$ and $J(G)^{(k)}$ is its $k$-th symbolic power. We prove that the sequences $\{{\rm sdepth}(S/J(G)^{(k)})\}_{k=1}^\infty$ and $\{{\rm sdepth}(J(G)^{(k)})\}_{k=1}^\infty$ are non-increasing and hence convergent. Suppose that $ν_{o}(G)$ denotes the ordered matching number of $G$. We show that for every integer $k\geq 2ν_{o}(G)-1$, the modules $J(G)^{(k)}$ and $S/J(G)^{(k)}$ satisfy the Stanley's inequality. We also provide an alternative proof for \cite[Theorem 3.4]{hktt} which states that ${\rm depth}(S/J(G)^{(k)})=n-ν_{o}(G)-1$, for every integer $k\geq 2ν_{o}(G)-1$.
A directed graph generalization of chromatic quasisymmetric functions
Stanley defined the chromatic symmetric function of a graph, and Shareshian and Wachs introduced a refinement, namely the chromatic quasisymmetric function of a labeled graph. In this paper, we define the chromatic quasisymmetric function of a directed graph, which agrees with the Shareshian-Wachs definition in the acyclic case. We give an F-basis expansion for all digraphs in terms of a permutation statistic, which we call G-descents. We use this expansion to derive a p-positivity formula for all digraphs with symmetric chromatic quasisymmetric functions. We show that the chromatic quasisymmetric functions of a certain class of digraphs, called circular indifference digraphs, have symmetric coefficients. We present an e-positivity formula for the chromatic quasisymmetric function of the directed cycle, which is a t-analog of a result of Stanley. Lastly, we give a generalization of the Shareshian-Wachs e-positivity conjecture to a larger class of digraphs.
The cotype zeta function of $\mathbb{Z}^d$
We give an asymptotic formula for the number of sublattices $Λ\subseteq \mathbb{Z}^d$ of index at most $X$ for which $\mathbb{Z}^d/Λ$ has rank at most $m$, answering a question of Nguyen and Shparlinski. We compare this result to recent work of Stanley and Wang on Smith Normal Forms of random integral matrices and discuss connections to the Cohen-Lenstra heuristics. Our arguments are based on Petrogradsky's formulas for the cotype zeta function of $\mathbb{Z}^d$, a multivariable generalization of the subgroup growth zeta function of $\mathbb{Z}^d$.
Characters of Independent Stanley Sequences

Odlyzko and Stanley introduced a greedy algorithm for constructing infinite sequences with no 3-term arithmetic progressions when beginning with a finite set with no 3-term arithmetic progressions. The sequences constructed from this procedure are known as Stanley sequences and appear to have two distinct growth rates which dictate whether the sequences are structured or chaotic. A large subclass of sequences of the former type is independent sequences, which have a self-similar structure. An attribute of interest for independent sequences is the character. In this paper, building on recent progress, we prove that every nonnegative integer $λ\not\in\{1,3,5,9,11,15\}$ is attainable as the character of an independent Stanley sequence, thus resolving a conjecture of Rolnick.
Skew doubled shifted plane partitions: calculus and asymptotics

Plane partitions have been widely studied in Mathematics since MacMahon. See, for example, the works by Andrews, Macdonald, Stanley, Sagan and Krattenthaler. The Schur process approach, introduced by Okounkov and Reshetikhin, and further developed by Borodin, Corwin, Corteel, Savelief and Vuletić, has been proved to be a powerful tool in the study of various kinds of plane partitions. The exact enumerations of ordinary plane partitions, shifted plane partitions and cylindric partitions could be derived from two summation formulas for Schur processes, namely, the open summation formula and the cylindric summation formula.
In this paper, we establish a new summation formula for Schur processes, called the complete summation formula. As an application, we obtain the generating function and the asymptotic formula for the number of doubled shifted plane partitions, which can be viewed as plane partitions `shifted at the two sides'. We prove that the order of the asymptotic formula depends only on the diagonal width of the doubled shifted plane partition, not on the profile (the skew zone) itself. By using the same methods, the generating function and the asymptotic formula for the number of symmetric cylindric partitions are also derived.

Richard P. Stanley defined the chromatic symmetric function of a simple graph and has conjectured that every tree is determined by its chromatic symmetric function. Recently, Takahiro Hasebe and the author proved that the order quasisymmetric functions, which are analogs of the chromatic symmetric functions, distinguish rooted trees. In this paper, using a similar method, we prove that the chromatic symmetric functions distinguish trivially perfect graphs. Moreover, we also prove that claw-free cographs, that is, $ \{K_{1,3},P_{4}\} $-free graphs belong to a known class of $ e $-positive graphs.
Stanley sequences with odd character

Given a set of integers containing no 3-term arithmetic progressions, one constructs a Stanley sequence by choosing integers greedily without forming such a progression. Independent Stanley sequences are a "well-structured" class of Stanley sequences with two main parameters: the character $λ(A)$ and the repeat factor $ρ(A)$. Rolnick conjectured that for every $λ\in \mathbb{N}_0\backslash\{1, 3, 5, 9, 11, 15\}$, there exists an independent Stanley sequence $S(A)$ such that $λ(A) =λ$. This paper demonstrates that $λ(A) \not\in \{1, 3, 5, 9, 11, 15\}$ for any independent Stanley sequence $S(A)$.

A Weyl arrangement is the hyperplane arrangement defined by a root system. Arnold and Saito proved that every Weyl arrangement is free. The Weyl subarrangements of type $A_{\ell}$ are represented by simple graphs. Stanley gave a characterization of freeness for this type of arrangements in terms of thier graph. In addition, The Weyl subarrangements of type $B_{\ell}$ can be represented by signed graphs. A characterization of freeness for them is not known. However, characterizations of freeness for a few restricted classes are known. For instance, Edelman and Reiner characterized the freeness of the arrangements between type $ A_{\ell-1} $ and type $ B_{\ell} $. In this paper, we give a characterization of the freeness and supersolvability of the Weyl subarrangements of type $B_{\ell}$ under certain assumption.

We consider simplicial complexes admitting a free action by an abelian group. Specifically, we establish a refinement of the classic result of Hochster describing the local cohomology modules of the associated Stanley--Reisner ring, demonstrating that the topological structure of the free action extends to the algebraic setting. If the complex in question is also Buchsbaum, this new description allows for a specialization of Schenzel's calculation of the Hilbert series of some of the ring's Artinian reductions. In further application, we generalize to the Buchsbaum case the results of Stanley and Adin that provide a lower bound on the $h$-vector of a Cohen-Macaulay complex admitting a free action by a cyclic group of prime order.

The orbits of the symplectic group acting on the type A flag variety are indexed by the fixed-point-free involutions in a finite symmetric group. The cohomology classes of the closures of these orbits have polynomial representatives $\hat{\mathfrak{S}}^{\tt{FPF}}_z$ akin to Schubert polynomials. We show that the fixed-point-free involution Stanley symmetric functions $\hat{F}^{\tt{FPF}}_z$, which are stable limits of the polynomials $\hat{\mathfrak{S}}^{\tt{FPF}}_z$, are Schur $P$-positive. To do so, we construct an analogue of the Lascoux-Schützenberger tree, an algebraic recurrence that computes Schubert polynomials. As a byproduct of our proof, we obtain a Pfaffian formula of geometric interest for $\hat{\mathfrak{S}}^{\tt{FPF}}_z$ when $z$ is a fixed-point-free version of a Grassmannian permutation. We also classify the fixed-point-free involution Stanley symmetric functions that are single Schur $P$-functions, and show that the decomposition of $\hat{F}^{\tt{FPF}}_z$ into Schur $P$-functions is unitriangular with respect to dominance order on strict partitions. These results and proofs mirror previous work by the authors related to the orthogonal group action on the type A flag variety.
Character Values of Stanley Sequences
Stanley and Odlyzko proposed a method for greedily constructing sets with no 3-term arithmetic progressions. It is conjectured that there is a dichotomy between such sequences: those that have a periodic structure as the sequence satisfies certain recurrence relations while others appear to be chaotic. One large class of sequences that have these periodic behaviors are known as independent sequences that have two parameters, a character and a growth factor. It was conjectured by Rolnick that all but a finite set of integers can be achieved as characters of a independent sequences. Previously the only large class of integers known to be characters where those with base 3 representations consisting solely of the digits 0 and 2. This paper dramatically improves this result by demonstrating that all even integers not congruent to 244 mod 486 can be achieved as characters, therefore demonstrating that the set of all characters has a positive lower density.

Cylindric skew Schur functions, a generalization of skew Schur functions, are closely related to the famous problem finding a combinatorial formula for the 3-point Gromov-Witten invariants of Grassmannian. In this paper, we prove cylindric Schur positivity of the cylindric skew Schur functions, conjectured by McNamara. We also show that all coefficients appearing in the expansion are the same as $3$-point Gromov-Witten invariants. We start discussing properties of affine Stanley symmetric functions for general affine permutations and $321$-avoiding affine permutations, and explain how these functions are related to cylindric skew Schur functions. We also provide an effective algorithm to compute the expansion of the cylindric skew Schur functions in terms of the cylindric Schur functions, and the expansion of affine Stanley symmetric functions in terms of affine Schur functions.
