The concept of matchings originated in group theory to address a linear algebra problem related to canonical forms for symmetric tensors. In an abelian group $(G,+)$, a matching is a bijection $f: A \to B$ between two finite subsets $A$ and $B$ of $G$ such that $a + f(a) \notin A$ for all $a \in A$. A group $G$ has the matching property if, for every two finite subsets $A, B \subset G$ of the same size with $0 \notin B$, there exists a matching from $A$ to $B$. In prior work [5], matroid analogues of results concerning matchings in groups were introduced and established. This paper serves as a sequel, extending that line of inquiry by investigating sparse paving, panhandle, and Schubert matroids through the lens of matchability. While some proofs draw upon earlier findings on the matchability of sparse paving matroids, the paper is designed to be self-contained and accessible without reference to the preceding sequel. Our approach combines tools from both matroid theory and additive number theory.

This paper investigates the number of supports of the Schubert polynomial $\mathfrak{S}_w(x)$ indexed by a permutation $w$. This number also equals the number of lattice points in the Newton polytope of $\mathfrak{S}_w(x)$. We establish a lower bound for this number in terms of the occurrences of patterns in $w$. The analysis is carried out in the general framework of dual characters of flagged Weyl modules. Our result considerably improves the bounds for principal specializations of Schubert polynomials or dual flagged Weyl characters previously obtained by Weigandt, Gao, and M{é}sz{á}ros--St. Dizier--Tanjaya. Some problems and conjectures are discussed.
Postnikov--Stanley polynomials are Lorentzian
Postnikov--Stanley polynomials $D_u^w$ are a generalization of skew dual Schubert polynomials to the setting of arbitrary Weyl groups. We prove that Postnikov--Stanley polynomials are Lorentzian by showing that they are degree polynomials of Richardson varieties. Our result yields an interesting class of Lorentzian polynomials related to the geometry of Richardson varieties, generalizes the result that dual Schubert polynomials are Lorentzian (Huh--Matherne--Mészáros--St. Dizier 2022), and resolves the conjecture that Postnikov--Stanley polynomials have M-convex support (An--Tung--Zhang 2024).

Schubert coefficients are nonnegative integers $c^w_{u,v}$ that arise in Algebraic Geometry and play a central role in Algebraic Combinatorics. It is a major open problem whether they have a combinatorial interpretation, i.e, whether $c^w_{u,v} \in \#{\sf P}$. We study the closely related vanishing problem of Schubert coefficients: $\{c^w_{u,v}=^? 0\}$. Until this work it was open whether this problem is in the polynomial hierarchy ${\sf PH}$. We prove that $\{c^w_{u,v}=^? 0\}$ in ${\sf coAM}$ assuming the GRH. In particular, the vanishing problem is in ${Σ_2^{\text{p}}}$. Our approach is based on constructions lifted formulations, which give polynomial systems of equations for the problem. The result follows from a reduction to Parametric Hilbert's Nullstellensatz, recently studied in arXiv:2408.13027. We extend our results to all classical types. Type $D$ is resolved in the appendix (joint with David Speyer).
On the Classification of Schubert Varieties in Partial Flag Varieties
We generalize the classification of isomorphism classes of Schubert varieties in complete flag varieties G/B to a class of partial flag varieties G/P. In particular, we classify all Schubert varieties in G/P where P is a minimal parabolic subgroup and all Schubert surfaces. We also obtain several pairs of isomorphisms of Schubert varieties from folding the root system. This allows us to find an upper bound of the cardinality of isomorphism classes of Schubert three-folds.

We study the set of linear subspaces of a fixed dimension intersecting a given polytope. To describe this set as a semialgebraic subset of a Grassmannian, we introduce a Schubert arrangement of the polytope, defined by the Chow forms of the polytope's faces of complementary dimension. We show that the set of subspaces intersecting a specified family of faces is defined by fixing the sign of the Chow forms of their boundaries. We give inequalities defining the set of stabbing subspaces in terms of sign conditions on the Chow form.
Bounds On Schubert Coefficients in the Two-Row Case
Weprovide an upper bound for generalized Littlewood-Richardson coefficients $c^w_{uv}$, where $u$ is a two-row Young diagram corresponding to a Grassmannian permutation. We end with a conjecture on the upper bounds for all such structure constants.

Let $\mathfrak h$ be a Cartan subalgebra of a complex semisimple Lie algebra $\mathfrak g.$ We define a compactification $\bar {\mathfrak h}$ of $\mathfrak h$, which is analogous to the closure $\bar H$ of the corresponding maximal torus $H$ in the adjoint group of $\mathfrak g$ in its wonderful compactification, which was introduced and studied by De Concini and Procesi \cite{DCP}. We observe that $\bar {\mathfrak h}$ is a matroid Schubert variety and prove that the irreducible components of the boundary $\bar {\mathfrak h} - \mathfrak h$ of $\mathfrak h$ are divisors indexed by root system data. We prove that $\bar {\mathfrak h}$ is a normal variety and find an affine paving of $\bar {\mathfrak h},$ where the strata are given by the orbits of $\mathfrak h.$ We show that the strata of $\bar {\mathfrak h}$ correspond bijectively to subspaces of the corresponding Coxeter hyperplane arrangement studied by Orlik and Solomon, and prove that the associated posets are isomorphic. As a consequence, we express the Betti numbers of $\bar {\mathfrak h}$ in terms of well-known combinatorial invariants in the classical cases. We show that the Weyl group $W$ acts on $\bar {\mathfrak h}$, and describe $H^{\bullet}(\bar {\mathfrak h}, \mathbb C)$ as a representation of $W$, and compute the cup product for $H^{\bullet}(\bar {\mathfrak h}, \mathbb Z)$.
BiSC: An algorithm for discovering generalized permutation patterns
Theorems relating permutations with objects in other fields of mathematics are often stated in terms of avoided patterns. Examples include various classes of Schubert varieties from algebraic geometry (Billey and Abe 2013), commuting functions in analysis (Baxter 1964), beta-shifts in dynamical systems (Elizalde 2011) and homology of representations (Sundaram 1994). We present a new algorithm, BiSC, that, given any set of permutations, outputs a conjecture for describing the set in terms of avoided patterns. The algorithm automatically conjectures the statements of known theorems such as the descriptions of smooth (Lakshmibai and Sandhya 1990) and forest-like permutations (Bousquet-M{é}lou and Butler 2007), Baxter permutations (Chung et al. 1978), stack-sortable (Knuth 1975) and West-2-stack-sortable permutations (West 1990). The algorithm has also been used to discover new theorems and conjectures related to the dihedral and alternating subgroups of the symmetric group, Young tableaux, Wilf-equivalences, and sorting devices.
Newton polytopes of dual Schubert polynomials
The M-convexity of dual Schubert polynomials was first proven by Huh, Matherne, Mészáros, and St. Dizier in 2022. We give a full characterization of the supports of dual Schubert polynomials, which yields an elementary alternative proof of the M-convexity result, and furthermore strengthens it by explicitly characterizing the vertices of their Newton polytopes combinatorially.

We prove a criterion of when the dual character $χ_{D}(x)$ of the flagged Weyl module associated to a diagram $D$ in the grid $[n]\times [n]$ is zero-one, that is, the coefficients of monomials in $χ_{D}(x)$ are either 0 or 1. This settles a conjecture proposed by M{é}sz{á}ros--St. Dizier--Tanjaya. Since Schubert polynomials and key polynomials occur as special cases of dual flagged Weyl characters, our approach provides a new and unified proof of known criteria for zero-one Schubert/key polynomials due to Fink--M{é}sz{á}ros--St. Dizier and Hodges--Yong, respectively.
Generic pipe dreams, lower-upper varieties, and Schwartz-MacPherson classes
We recall the lower-upper varieties from [Knutson '05] and give a formula for their equivariant cohomology classes, as a sum over generic pipe dreams. We recover as limits the classic and bumpless pipe dream formulae for double Schubert polynomials. As a byproduct, we obtain a formula for the degree of the $n$th commuting variety as a sum of powers of 2. Generic pipe dreams also appear in the Segre-Schwarz-MacPherson analogue of the AJS/Billey formula, and when computing the Chern-Schwarz-MacPherson class of the orbit $B_- w B_+ \subseteq Mat_{k\times n}$ or of a double Bruhat cell $B_-u B_+ \cap B_+ v B_-$.
Enumeration of crossings in two-step puzzles
We prove a formula which gives the number of occurrences of certain labels and local configurations inside two-step puzzles introduced by Buch, Kresch, Purbhoo and Tamvakis from the work of Knutson. Puzzles are tilings of the triangular lattice by edge labeled tiles and are known to compute the Schubert structure constants of the cohomology of two-step flag varieties. The formula that we obtain depends only on the boundary conditions of the puzzle. The proof is based on the study of color maps which are tilings of the triangular lattice by edge labeled tiles obtained from puzzles.
Generating Series of Key Polynomials and Bounded Ascending Sequences of Integers
The fact that Schubert polynomials are the weighted counting functions for reduced RC-graphs, also known as reduced pipe dreams, was established using their generating functions inside an appropriate Demazure algebra. Here we investigate the generating functions of another family of polynomials, the key polynomials, also known as Demazure characters. Each component in that function is a rational function, whose denominator is an explicit product whose definition is based on bounded ascending sequences of integers. We determine the first terms of the polynomial numerator, and pose conjectures about these terms in general as well as some of the next ones. The form of our generating functions suggests relations between the coefficients in key polynomials and signed sums of numbers of integral points on polytopes.

We provide explicit combinatorial formulas for the Chow polynomial and for the augmented Chow polynomial of uniform matroids, thereby proving a conjecture by Ferroni. These formulas refine existing formulas by Hampe and by Eur, Huh, and Larson, offering a combinatorial interpretation of the coefficients based on Schubert matroids. As a byproduct, we count Schubert matroids by rank, number of loops, and cogirth.
Action of free fermions on Symmetric Functions

The Clifford algebra of the endomorphisms of the exterior algebra of a countably dimensional vector space induces natural bosonic shadows, i.e. families of linear maps between the cohomologies of complex grassmannians. The main result of this paper is to provide a determinantal formula expressing generating functions of such endomorphisms unifying several classical special cases. For example the action over a point recovers the Jacobi-Trudy formula in the theory of symmetric functions or the Giambelli's one in classical Schubert calculus, whereas the action of degree preserving endomorphisms take into account the finite type version of the Date-Jimbo-Kashiwara-Miwa bosonic vertex operator representation of the Lie algebra $gl(\infty)$. The fermionic actions on (finite type) bosonic spaces is described in terms of the classical theory of symmetric functions. The main guiding principle is the fact that the exterior algebra is a (non irreducible) representation of the ring of symmetric functions, which is the way we use to spell the ``finite type'' Boson-Fermion correspondence.
The geometry of quasisymmetric coinvariants
We develop a quasisymmetric analogue of the theory of Schubert cycles, building off of our previous work on a quasisymmetric analogue of Schubert polynomials and divided differences. Our constructions result in a natural geometric interpretation for the ring of quasisymmetric coinvariants.

We use algebraic methods in statistical mechanics to represent a multi-parameter class of polynomials in severable variables as partition functions of a new family of solvable lattice models. The class of polynomials, defined by A.N. Kirillov, is derived from the largest class of divided difference operators satisfying the braid relations of Cartan type $A$. It includes as specializations Schubert, Grothendieck, and dual-Grothendieck polynomials among others. In particular, our results prove positivity conjectures of Kirillov for the subfamily of Hecke--Grothendieck polynomials, while the larger family is shown to exhibit rare instances of negative coefficients.
Double orthodontia formulas and Lascoux positivity

We give a new formula for double Grothendieck polynomials based on Magyar's orthodontia algorithm for diagrams. Our formula implies a similar formula for double Schubert polynomials $\mathfrak S_w(\mathbf x;\mathbf y)$. We also prove a curious positivity result: for vexillary permutations $w\in S_n$, the polynomial $x_1^n\dots x_n^n \mathfrak S_w(x_n^{-1}, \dots, x_1^{-1}; 1,\dots,1)$ is a graded nonnegative sum of Lascoux polynomials. We conjecture that this positivity result holds for all $w\in S_n$. This conjecture would follow from a problem of independent interest regarding Lascoux positivity of certain products of Lascoux polynomials.
