We present a proof of a Littlewood-Richardson rule for the K-theory of odd orthogonal Grassmannians OG(n,2n+1), as conjectured in [Thomas-Yong '09]. Specifically, we prove that rectification using the jeu de taquin for increasing shifted tableaux introduced there, is well-defined and gives rise to an associative product. Recently, [Buch-Ravikumar '09] proved a Pieri rule for OG(n,2n+1) that [Feigenbaum-Sergel '09] showed confirms a special case of the conjecture. Together, these results imply the aforementioned conjecture.

We study Hilbert-Samuel multiplicity for points of Schubert varieties in the complete flag variety, by Groebner degenerations of the Kazhdan-Lusztig ideal. In the covexillary case, we give a positive combinatorial rule for multiplicity by establishing (with a Groebner basis) a reduced and equidimensional limit whose Stanley-Reisner simplicial complex is homeomorphic to a shellable ball or sphere. We show that multiplicity counts the number of facets of this complex. We also obtain a formula for the Hilbert series of the local ring. In particular, our work gives a multiplicity rule for Grassmannian Schubert varieties, providing alternative statements and proofs to formulae of [Lakshmibai-Weyman '90], [Rosenthal-Zelevinsky '01], [Krattenthaler '01], [Kreiman-Lakshmibai '04] and [Woo-Yong '09]. We suggest extensions of our methodology to the general case.
The Brauer loop scheme and orbital varieties

A. Joseph invented multidegrees in [Jo84] to study orbital varieties, which are the components of an orbital scheme, itself constructed by intersecting a nilpotent orbit with a Borel subalgebra. Their multidegrees, known as Joseph polynomials, give a basis of a (Springer) representation of the Weyl group. In the case of the nilpotent orbit $\{ M^2=0 \}$, the orbital varieties can be indexed by noncrossing chord diagrams in the disc. In this paper we study the normal cone to the orbital scheme inside this nilpotent orbit $\{ M^2 = 0 \}$. This gives a better-motivated construction of the Brauer loop scheme we introduced in [KZJ07], whose components are indexed by all chord diagrams (now possibly with crossings) in the disc. The multidegrees of its components, the Brauer loop varieties, were shown to reproduce the ground state of the Brauer loop model in statistical mechanics [DFZJ06]. Here, we reformulate and slightly generalize these multidegrees in order to express them as solutions of the rational quantum Knizhnik--Zamolodchikov equation associated to the Brauer algebra. In particular, the vector of the multidegrees satisfies two sets of equations, corresponding to the $e_i$ and $f_i$ generators of the Brauer algebra. We describe here the geometric meaning of both $e_i$ and $f_i$ equations in our slightly extended setting. We also describe the corresponding actions at the level of orbital varieties: while only the $e_i$ equations make sense directly on the Joseph polynomials, the $f_i$ equations also appear if one introduces a broader class of varieties. We explain the connection of the latter with matrix Schubert varieties.
Divided difference operators for partial flag varieties
Divided difference operators are degree-reducing operators on the cohomology of flag varieties that are used to compute algebraic invariants of the ring (for instance, structure constants). We identify divided difference operators on the equivariant cohomology of G/P for arbitrary partial flag varieties of arbitrary Lie type, and show how to use them in the ordinary cohomology of G/P. We provide three applications. The first shows that all Schubert classes of partial flag varieties can be generated from a sequence of divided difference operators on the highest-degree Schubert class. The second is a generalization of Billey's formula for the localizations of equivariant Schubert classes of flag varieties to arbitrary partial flag varieties. The third gives a choice of Schubert polynomials for partial flag varieties as well as an explicit formula for each. We focus on the example of maximal Grassmannians, including Grassmannians of k-planes in a complex n-dimensional vector space.
Tableaux in the Whitney Module of a Matroid

The Whitney module of a matroid is a natural analogue of the tensor algebra of the exterior algebra of a vector space that takes into account the dependencies of a matroid. In this paper we indicate the role that tableaux can play in describing the Whitney module. We will use our results to describe a basis of the Whitney module of a certain class of matroids known as freedom matroids (also known as Schubert, or shifted matroids). The doubly multilinear submodule of the Whitney module is a representation of the symmetric group. We will describe a formula for the multiplicity of hook shapes in this representation in terms of no broken circuit sets.

In this paper we prove that a deformed tensor product of two Lefschetz algebras is a Lefschetz algebra. We then use this result in conjunction with some basic Schubert calculus to prove that the coinvariant ring of a finite reflection has the strong Lefschetz property.

A Richardson variety $X_\ga^\gc$ in the Orthogonal Grassmannian is defined to be the intersection of a Schubert variety $X^\gc$ in the Orthogonal Grassmannian and a opposite Schubert variety $X_\ga$ therein. We give an explicit description of the initial ideal (with respect to certain conveniently chosen term order) for the ideal of the tangent cone at any $T$-fixed point of $X_\ga^\gc$, thus generalizing a result of Raghavan-Upadhyay \cite{Ra-Up2}. Our proof is based on a generalization of the Robinson-Schensted-Knuth (RSK) correspondence, which we call the Orthogonal bounded RSK (OBRSK). The OBRSK correspondence will give a degree-preserving bijection between a set of monomials defined by the initial ideal of the ideal of the tangent cone (as mentioned above) and a `standard monomial basis'. A similar work for Richardson varieties in the ordinary Grassmannian was done by Kreiman in \cite{Kr-bkrs}.

We produce a family of reductions for Schubert intersection problems whose applicability is checked by calculating a linear combination of the dimensions involved. These reductions do not alter the Littlewood-Richardson coefficient, and they lead to an explicit solution of the intersection problem when this coefficient is 1.

Kazhdan-Lusztig ideals, a family of generalized determinantal ideals investigated in [Woo-Yong '08], provide an explicit choice of coordinates and equations encoding a neighbourhood of a torus-fixed point of a Schubert variety on a type A flag variety. Our main result is a Grobner basis for these ideals. This provides a single geometric setting to transparently explain the naturality of pipe dreams on the Rothe diagram of a permutation, and their appearance in:
* combinatorial formulas [Fomin-Kirillov '94] for Schubert and Grothendieck polynomials of [Lascoux-Schutzenberger '82];
* the equivariant K-theory specialization formula of [Buch-Rimanyi '04]; and
* a positive combinatorial formula for multiplicities of Schubert varieties in good cases, including those for which the associated Kazhdan-Lusztig ideal is homogeneous under the standard grading.
Our results generalize (with alternate proofs) [Knutson-Miller '05]'s Grobner basis theorem for Schubert determinantal ideals and their geometric interpretation of the monomial positivity of Schubert polynomials. We also complement recent work of [Knutson '08,'09] on degenerations of Kazhdan-Lusztig varieties in general Lie type, as well as work of [Goldin '01] on equivariant localization and of [Lakshmibai-Weyman '90], [Rosenthal-Zelevinsky '01], and [Krattenthaler '01] on Grassmannian multiplicity formulas.

Peterson varieties are a special class of Hessenberg varieties that have been extensively studied e.g. by Peterson, Kostant, and Rietsch, in connection with the quantum cohomology of the flag variety. In this manuscript, we develop a generalized Schubert calculus, and in particular a positive Chevalley-Monk formula, for the ordinary and Borel-equivariant cohomology of the Peterson variety $Y$ in type $A_{n-1}$, with respect to a natural $S^1$-action arising from the standard action of the maximal torus on flag varieties. As far as we know, this is the first example of positive Schubert calculus beyond the realm of Kac-Moody flag varieties $G/P$.
Our main results are as follows. First, we identify a computationally convenient basis of $H^*_{S^1}(Y)$, which we call the basis of Peterson Schubert classes. Second, we derive a manifestly positive, integral Chevalley-Monk formula for the product of a cohomology-degree-2 Peterson Schubert class with an arbitrary Peterson Schubert class. Both $H^*_{S^1}(Y)$ and $H^*(Y)$ are generated in degree 2. Finally, by using our Chevalley-Monk formula we give explicit descriptions (via generators and relations) of both the $S^1$-equivariant cohomology ring $H^*_{S^1}(Y)$ and the ordinary cohomology ring $H^*(Y)$ of the type $A_{n-1}$ Peterson variety. Our methods are both directly from and inspired by those of GKM (Goresky-Kottwitz-MacPherson) theory and classical Schubert calculus. We discuss several open questions and directions for future work.

Let $G$ be a classical complex Lie group, $P$ any parabolic subgroup of $G$, and $G/P$ the corresponding partial flag variety. We prove an explicit combinatorial Giambelli formula which expresses an arbitrary Schubert class in the cohomology ring of $G/P$ as a polynomial in certain special Schubert class generators. Our formula extends to one that applies to the torus-equivariant cohomology ring of $G/P$ and to the setting of symplectic and orthogonal degeneracy loci.

We propose a theory of combinatorially explicit Schubert polynomials which represent the Schubert classes in the Borel presentation of the cohomology ring of orthogonal flag varieties. We use these polynomials to describe the arithmetic Schubert calculus on these spaces. We also give a method to compute the natural arithmetic intersection numbers which arise, and prove that they are all rational numbers.
Criteria for rational smoothness of some symmetric orbit closures

Let $G$ be a connected reductive linear algebraic group over $\C$ with an involution $θ$. Denote by $K$ the subgroup of fixed points. In certain cases, the $K$-orbits in the flag variety $G/B$ are indexed by the twisted identities $\iot = \{θ(w^{-1})w\mid w\in W\}$ in the Weyl group $W$. Under this assumption, we establish a criterion for rational smoothness of orbit closures which generalises classical results of Carrell and Peterson for Schubert varieties. That is, whether an orbit closure is rationally smooth at a given point can be determined by examining the degrees in a ``Bruhat graph'' whose vertices form a subset of $\iot$. Moreover, an orbit closure is rationally smooth everywhere if and only if its corresponding interval in the Bruhat order on $\iot$ is rank symmetric.
In the special case $K=\Sp_{2n}(\C)$, $G=\SL_{2n}(\C)$, we strengthen our criterion by showing that only the degree of a single vertex, the ``bottom one'', needs to be examined. This generalises a result of Deodhar for type $A$ Schubert varieties.

We introduce a family of tableaux that simultaneously generalizes the tableaux used to characterize Grothendieck polynomials and k-Schur functions. We prove that the polynomials drawn from these tableaux are the affine Grothendieck polynomials and k-K-Schur functions -- Schubert representatives for the K-theory of affine Grassmannians and their dual in the nil Hecke ring. We prove a number of combinatorial properties including Pieri rules.
A $q$-analogue of the FKG inequality and some applications
Let $L$ be a finite distributive lattice and $μ: L \to {\mathbb R}^{+}$ a log-supermodular function. For functions $k: L \to {\mathbb R}^{+}$ let $$E_μ (k; q) \defeq \sum_{x\in L} k(x) μ(x) q^{{\mathrm rank}(x)} \in {\mathbb R}^{+}[q].$$ We prove for any pair $g,h: L\to {\mathbb R}^{+}$ of monotonely increasing functions, that $$E_μ (g; q)\cdot E_μ (h; q) \ll
E_μ (1; q)\cdot E_μ (gh; q), $$ where ``$ \ll $'' denotes coefficientwise inequality of real polynomials. The FKG inequality of Fortuin, Kasteleyn and Ginibre (1971) is the real number inequality obtained by specializing to $q=1$.
The polynomial FKG inequality has applications to $f$-vectors of joins and intersections of simplicial complexes, to Betti numbers of intersections of certain Schubert varieties, and to the following kind of correlation inequality for power series weighted by Young tableaux. Let $Y$ be the set of all integer partitions. Given functions $k, μ: Y \rarr \R^+$, and parameters $0\le s\le t$, define the formal power series $$F_μ(k ; z) \defeq \sum_{\la\in Y} k(\la) μ(\la) (f_{\la})^t \frac{z^{|\la|}}{(|\la| !)^s} \in \R^+ [[z]], $$ %\sum_{\la\in Y} k(\la) μ(\la) (f_{\la})^t \frac{z^{|\la|}}{|\la| !} \in \R^+ [[z]],$$ where $f_{\la}$ is the number of standard Young tableaux of shape $\la$. Assume that $μ: Y\rarr \R^+$ is log-supermodular, and that $g, h: Y \rarr \R^+$ are monotonely increasing with respect to containment order of partition shapes. Then $$F_μ(g;z) \cdot F_μ(h;z) \ll F_μ(1;z) \cdot F_μ(gh;z). $$

We suggest the point of view that the Schubert classes of the affine Grassmannian of a simple algebraic group should be considered as Schur-positive symmetric functions. In particular, we give a geometric explanation of the Schur positivity of k-Schur functions (at t = 1). We also put this in the context of the theory of combinatorial Hopf algebras.
Positivity of Equivariant Schubert Classes Through Moment Map Degeneration

For a flag manifold $M=G/B$ with the canonical torus action, the $T-$equivariant cohomology is generated by equivariant Schubert classes, with one class $τ_u$ for every element $u$ of the Weyl group $W$. These classes are determined by their restrictions to the fixed point set $M^T \simeq W$, and the restrictions are polynomials with nonnegative integer coefficients in the simple roots.
The main result of this article is a positive formula for computing $τ_u(v)$ in types A, B, and C. To obtain this formula we identify $G/B$ with a generic co-adjoint orbit and use a result of Goldin and Tolman to compute $τ_u(v)$ in terms of the induced moment map. Our formula, given as a sum of contributions of certain maximal ascending chains from $u$ to $v$, follows from a systematic degeneration of the moment map, corresponding to degenerating the co-adjoint orbit. In type A we prove that our formula is manifestly equivalent to the formula announced by Billey in \cite{Bi}, but in type C, the two formulas are not equivalent.
Positroid varieties I: juggling and geometry
While the intersection of the Grassmannian Bruhat decompositions for all coordinate flags is an intractable mess, the intersection of only the {\em cyclic shifts} of one Bruhat decomposition turns out to have many of the good properties of the Bruhat and Richardson decompositions. This decomposition coincides with the projection of the Richardson stratification of the flag manifold, studied by Lusztig, Rietsch, and Brown-Goodearl-Yakimov. However, its cyclic-invariance is hidden in this description. Postnikov gave many cyclic-invariant ways to index the strata, and we give a new one, by a subset of the affine Weyl group we call {\em bounded juggling patterns}. We adopt his terminology and call the strata {\em positroid varieties.} We show that positroid varieties are normal and Cohen-Macaulay, and are defined as schemes by the vanishing of Plucker coordinates. We compute their T-equivariant Hilbert series, and show that their associated cohomology classes are represented by affine Stanley functions. This latter fact lets us connect Postnikov's and Buch-Kresch-Tamvakis' approaches to quantum Schubert calculus. Our principal tools are the Frobenius splitting results for Richardson varieties as developed by Brion, Lakshmibai, and Littelmann, and the Hodge-Grobner degeneration of the Grassmannian. We show that each positroid variety degenerates to the projective Stanley-Reisner scheme of a shellable ball.

The main purpose of this paper is to give a survey of recent development on a classification of soliton solutions of the KP equation. The paper is self-contained, and we give a complete proof for the theorems needed for the classification. The classification is based on the Schubert decomposition of the real Grassmann manifold, Gr$(N,M)$, the set of $N$-dimensional subspaces in $\mathbb{R}^M$. Each soliton solution defined on Gr$(N,M)$ asymptotically consists of the $N$ number of line-solitons for $y\gg 0$ and the $M-N$ number of line-solitons for $y\ll 0$. In particular, we give the detailed description of those soliton solutions associated with Gr$(2,4)$, which play a fundamental role of multi-soliton solutions. We then consider a physical application of some of those solutions related to the Mach reflection discussed by J. Miles in 1977.
Towards a Littlewood-Richardson rule for Kac-Moody homogeneous spaces
We prove a general combinatorial formula yielding the intersection number $c_{u,v}^w$ of three particular $Λ$-minuscule Schubert classes in any Kac-Moody homogeneous space, generalising the Littlewood-Richardson rule. The combinatorics are based on jeu de taquin rectification in a poset defined by the heap of $w$.
