Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of skew-symmetric matrix Schubert varieties
Skew-symmetric matrix Schubert varieties are determinantal varieties obtained by intersecting matrix Schubert varieties with the space of skew-symmetric matrices. They are closely related to the orbit closures of the symplectic group action on the flag variety, and their torus-equivariant K-classes are the symplectic Grothendieck polynomials. We compute the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of skew-symmetric matrix Schubert varieties by giving a combinatorial formula for the degree of symplectic Grothendieck polynomials. In addition, we characterize the highest-degree homogeneous component of a symplectic Grothendieck polynomial and compute the maximal Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of skew-symmetric matrix Schubert varieties.
Decomposing Determinantal Varieties from Statistics via Matroid Theory
We study determinantal varieties from conditional independence models with hidden variables, focusing on their irreducible decompositions, dimensions, degrees, and Gröbner bases. Each variety encodes a collection of matroids, whose flats capture algebraic dependencies among variables. Using this approach, we provide a systematic description of the components, their dimensions, and defining equations, and introduce a combinatorial framework for computing the degree of the determinantal variety. Our approach highlights the central role of matroidal structures in the study of determinantal varieties and extends beyond the reach of current computational techniques.

On stationary real matrix Schubert varieties
In this paper, we study when a real matrix Schubert variety is stationary with respect to the first variation. We first show that a necessary condition for its open dense regular part to be a minimal submanifold is that the corresponding partial permutation is vexillary. Among vexillary partial permutations, we establish minimality by a geometric argument when the Rothe diagram is of Grassmannian type and has at most two connected components. We further obtain, as a corollary, the minimality of those varieties that decompose as products of this type. These varieties include all determinantal varieties as well as some new minimal cones.

Decomposing Conditional Independence Ideals with Hidden Variables: A Matroid-Theoretic Approach
We study a class of determinantal ideals arising from conditional independence (CI) statements with hidden variables. Such CI statements translate into determinantal conditions on a matrix whose entries represent the probabilities of events involving the observed random variables. Our main objective is to determine the irreducible components of the corresponding varieties and to provide a combinatorial or geometric interpretation of each. We achieve this by introducing a new approach rooted in matroid theory. In particular, we introduce a new class of matroids, which we term quasi-paving matroids, and show that the components of these determinantal varieties are precisely matroid varieties of quasi-paving matroids. Moreover, we derive generating functions that encode the number of irreducible components of these CI ideals.
Torus Actions on Matrix Schubert and Kazhdan-Lusztig Varieties, and their Links to Statistical Models
We investigate the toric geometry of two families of generalised determinantal varieties arising from permutations: Matrix Schubert varieties ($\overline{X_w}$) and Kazhdan-Lusztig varieties ($\mathcal{N}_{v,w}$). Matrix Schubert varieties can be written as $\overline{X_w} = Y_w \times \mathbb C^d$, where $d$ is maximal. We are especially interested in the structure and complexity of these varieties $Y_w$ and $\mathcal{N}_{v,w}$ under the so-called usual torus actions. In the case when $Y_w$ is toric, we provide a full characterisation of the simple reflections $s_i$ that render ${Y_{w \cdot s_i}}$ toric, as well as the corresponding changes to the weight cone. For Kazhdan-Lusztig varieties, we consider how moving one of the two permutations $v,w$ along a chain in the Bruhat poset affects their complexity. Additionally, we study the complexity of these varieties, for permutations $v$ and $w$ of a specific structure. Finally, we consider the links between these determinantal varieties and two classes of statistical models; namely conditional independence and quasi-independence models.

Efficient Algorithms for Maximal Matroid Degenerations and Irreducible Decompositions of Circuit Varieties
Published • View Publication • BIB
Matroid theory provides a unifying framework for studying dependence across combinatorics, geometry, and applications ranging from rigidity to statistics. In this work, we study circuit varieties of matroids, defined by their minimal dependencies, which play a central role in modeling determinantal varieties, rigidity problems, and conditional independence relations. We introduce an efficient computational strategy for decomposing the circuit variety of a given matroid $M$, based on an algorithm that identifies its maximal degenerations. These degenerations correspond to the largest matroids lying below $M$ in the weak order. Our framework yields explicit and computable decompositions of circuit varieties that were previously out of reach for symbolic or numerical algebra systems. We apply our strategy to several classical configurations, including the Vámos matroid, the unique Steiner quadruple system $S(3,4,8)$, projective and affine planes, the dual of the Fano matroid, and the dual of the graphic matroid of $K_{3,3}$. In each case, we successfully compute the minimal irreducible decomposition of their circuit varieties.

Points on Rational Normal Curves and the ABCT Variety
Published in Special volume on Positive Geometry, Le Matematiche 80 (1) (2025), 103-122 • Search Publication
The ABCT variety is defined as the closure of the image of $G(2,n)$ under the Veronese map. We realize the ABCT variety $V(3,n)$ as the determinantal variety of a vector bundle morphism. We use this to give a recursive formula for the fundamental class of $V(3,n)$. As an application, we show that special Schubert coefficients of this class are given by Eulerian numbers, matching a formula by Cachazo-He-Yuan. On the way to this, we prove that the variety of configuration of points on a common divisor on a smooth variety is reduced and irreducible, generalizing a result of Caminata-Moon-Schaffler.

Real and Positive Tropicalizations of Symmetric Determinantal Varieties
Published • View Publication • BIB
We study real and positive tropicalizations of the varieties of low rank symmetric matrices over real or complex Puiseux series. We show that real tropicalization coincides with complex tropicalization for rank two and corank one cases. We also show that the two notions of positive tropicalization introduced by Speyer and Williams coincide for symmetric rank two matrices, but they differ for symmetric corank one matrices.

Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity for $321$-avoiding Kazhdan-Lusztig varieties
We prove the Castelnuovo--Mumford regularity of 321-avoiding Kazhdan--Lusztig varieties can be computed combinatorially in terms of $K$-theoretic skew excited Young diagrams. We present an algorithm which gives a lower bound for this regularity and describe a setting in which this algorithm provides precise regularity computations. This algorithm specializes to compute the regularity of all two-sided mixed ladder determinantal varieties.
Ladder determinantal varieties and their symbolic blowups

In this article we show that the symbolic Rees algebra of a mixed ladder determinantal ideal is strongly $F$-regular. Furthermore, we prove that the symbolic associated graded algebra of a mixed ladder determinantal ideal is $F$-pure. The latter implies that mixed ladder determinantal rings are $F$-pure. We also show that ideals of the poset of minors of a generic matrix give rise to $F$-pure algebras with straightening law.

Realizations of multiassociahedra via bipartite rigidity
Let $Ass_k(n)$ denote the simplicial complex of $(k+1)$-crossing-free subsets of edges in $\binom{n}{2}$. Here $k,n\in \mathbb{N}$ and $n\ge 2k+1$. It is conjectured that this simplicial complex is polytopal (Jonsson 2005). However, despite several recent advances, this is still an open problem. In this paper we attack this problem using as a vector configuration the rows of a rigidity matrix, namely, hyperconnectivity restricted to bipartite graphs. We see that in this way $Ass_k(n)$ can be realized as a polytope for $k=2$ and $n\le 10$, and as a fan for $k=2$ and $n\le 13$, and for $k=3$ and $n\le 11$. However, we also prove that the cases with $k\ge 3$ and $n\ge \max\{12,2k+4\}$ are not realizable in this way. We also give an algebraic interpretation of the rigidity matroid, relating it to a projection of determinantal varieties with implications in matrix completion, and prove the presence of a fan isomorphic to $Ass_{k-1}(n-2)$ in the tropicalization of that variety.

Jacobi-Trudi formulas and determinantal varieties
Published in Algebraic Combinatorics 6 (2023) no. 5, 1163-1175 • View Publication • BIB
Gessel gave a determinantal expression for certain sums of Schur functions which visually looks like the classical Jacobi-Trudi formula. We explain the commonality of these formulas using a construction of Zelevinsky involving BGG complexes and use this explanation to generalize this formula in a few different directions.
Tropical Positivity and Determinantal Varieties
Published • View Publication • BIB
We initiate the study of positive-tropical generators as positive analogues of the concept of tropical bases. Applying this to the tropicalization of determinantal varieties, we develop criteria for characterizing their positive part. We focus on the study of low-rank matrices, in particular matrices of rank 2 and 3. Moreover, in the case square-matrices of corank 1, we fully classify the signed tropicalization of the determinantal variety, even beyond the positive part.

Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of ladder determinantal varieties and patches of Grassmannian Schubert varieties
Published • View Publication • BIB
We give degree formulas for Grothendieck polynomials indexed by vexillary permutations and $1432$-avoiding permutations via tableau combinatorics. These formulas generalize a formula for degrees of symmetric Grothendieck polynomials which appeared in previous joint work of the authors with Y. Ren and A. St. Dizier. We apply our formulas to compute Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of classes of generalized determinantal ideals. In particular, we give combinatorial formulas for the regularities of all one-sided mixed ladder determinantal ideals. We also derive formulas for the regularities of certain Kazhdan-Lusztig ideals, including those coming from open patches of Schubert varieties in Grassmannians. This provides a correction to a conjecture of Kummini-Lakshmibai-Sastry-Seshadri (2015).

Dimension computations for tropical determinantal varieties and prevarieties
This paper proves that when the $r \times r$ minors of an $m \times n$ matrix of indeterminates are not a tropical basis then the tropical prevariety has greater dimension than the tropical variety. It proves the same for the $r \times r$ minors of an $n \times n$ symmetric matrix of indeterminates when r > 4.

Gröbner bases and the Cohen-Macaulay property of Li's double determinantal varieties
Published in Proc. Amer. Math. Soc. Ser. B 7 (2020), 142--158 • View Publication • BIB
We consider double determinantal varieties, a special case of Nakajima quiver varieties. Li conjectured that double determinantal varieties are normal, irreducible, Cohen-Macaulay varieties whose defining ideals have a Gröbner basis given by their natural generators. We use liaison theory to prove this conjecture in a manner that generalizes results for mixed ladder determinantal varieties. We also give a formula for the dimension of a double determinantal variety.

In this article we consider linear codes coming from skew-symmetric determinantal varieties, which are defined by the vanishing of minors of a certain fixed size in the space of skew-symmetric matrices. In odd characteristic, the minimum distances of these codes are determined and a recursive formula for the weight of a general codeword in these codes is given.

Hyperplane Sections of Determinantal Varieties over Finite Fields and Linear Codes
Published • View Publication • BIB
We determine the number of ${\mathbb{F}}_q$-rational points of hyperplane sections of classical determinantal varieties defined by the vanishing of minors of a fixed size of a generic matrix, and identify sections giving the maximum number of ${\mathbb{F}}_q$-rational points. Further we consider similar questions for sections by linear subvarieties of a fixed codimension in the ambient projective space. This is closely related to the study of linear codes associated to determinantal varieties, and the determination of their weight distribution, minimum distance and generalized Hamming weights. The previously known results about these are generalized and expanded significantly

Lovasz-Saks-Schrijver ideals and coordinate sections of determinantal varieties
Published in Alg. Number Th. 13 (2019) 455-484 • View Publication • BIB
Motivated by questions in algebra and combinatorics we study two ideals associated to a simple graph G: --> the Lovasz-Saks-Schrijver ideal defining the d-dimensional orthogonal representations of the graph complementary to G and --> the determinantal ideal of the (d+1)-minors of a generic symmetric with 0s in positions prescribed by the graph G. In characteristic 0 these two ideals turns out to be closely related and algebraic properties such as being radical, prime or a complete intersection transfer from the Lovasz-Saks-Schrijver ideal to the determinantal ideal. For Lovasz-Saks-Schrijver ideals we link these properties to combinatorial properties of G and show that they always hold for d large enough. For specific classes of graph, such a forests, we can give a complete picture and classify the radical, prime and complete intersection Lovasz-Saks-Schrijver ideals.
Linear Codes associated to Determinantal Varieties
Published in Discrete Mathematics, Volume 338, Issue 8, 6 August 2015, Pages 1493-1500 • View Publication • BIB
We consider a class of linear codes associated to projective algebraic varieties defined by the vanishing of minors of a fixed size of a generic matrix. It is seen that the resulting code has only a small number of distinct weights. The case of varieties defined by the vanishing of 2 x 2 minors is considered in some detail. Here we obtain the complete weight distribution. Moreover, several generalized Hamming weights are determined explicitly and it is shown that the first few of them coincide with the distinct nonzero weights. One of the tools used is to determine the maximum possible number of matrices of rank 1 in a linear space of matrices of a given dimension over a finite field. In particular, we determine the structure and the maximum possible dimension of linear spaces of matrices in which every nonzero matrix has rank 1.
