Counting curves via lattice paths in polygons

This note presents a formula for the enumerative invariants of arbitrary genus in toric surfaces. The formula computes the number of curves of a given genus through a collection of generic points in the surface. The answer is given in terms of certain lattice paths in the relevant Newton polygon.
If the toric surface is the projective plane or the product of two projective lines then the invariants under consideration coincide with the Gromov-Witten invariants. The formula gives a new count even in these cases, where other computational technique is available.
Counting peaks at height k in a Dyck path

A Dyck path is a lattice path in the plane integer lattice $\mathbb{Z}\times\mathbb{Z}$ consisting of steps (1,1) and (1,-1), which never passes below the x-axis. A peak at height k on a Dyck path is a point on the path with coordinate y=k that is immediately preceded by a (1,1) step and immediately followed by a (1,-1) step. In this paper we find an explicit expression to the generating function for the number of Dyck paths starting at (0,0) and ending at (2n,0) with exactly r peaks at height k. This allows us to express this function via Chebyshev polynomials of the second kind and generating function for the Catalan numbers.

We prove a conjecture by Kreiman and Lakshmibai on a combinatorial description of multiplicities of points on Schubert varieties in Graszmannians in terms of certain sets of reflections in the corresponding Weyl group. The proof is accomplished by setting up a bijection between these sets of reflections and the author's previous combinatorial interpretation of these multiplicities in terms of nonintersecting lattice paths (Séminaire Lotharingien Combin. 45 (2001), Article B45c; see http://www.mat.univie.ac.at/~slc/wpapers/s45kratt.html or http://www.arxiv.org/abs/math.AG/0011129).

We consider the problem of enumerating the permutations containing exactly $k$ occurrences of a pattern of length 3. This enumeration has received a lot of interest recently, and there are a lot of known results. This paper presents an alternative approach to the problem, which yields a proof for a formula which so far only was conjectured (by Noonan and Zeilberger). This approach is based on bijections from permutations to certain lattice paths with ``jumps'', which were first considered by Krattenthaler.

We study the phase transition in the honeycomb dimer model (equivalently, monotone non-intersecting lattice path model). At the critical point the system has a strong long-range dependence; in particular, periodic boundary conditions give rise to a ``resonance'' phenomenon, where the partition function and other properties of the system depend sensitively on the shape of the domain.

A formula expressing free cumulants in terms of the Jacobi parameters of the corresponding orthogonal polynomials is derived. It combines Flajolet's theory of continued fractions and Lagrange inversion. For the converse we discuss Gessel-Viennot theory to express Hankel determinants in terms of various cumulants.

We give a formula that expresses the Hilbert series of one-sided ladder determinantal rings, up to a trivial factor, in form of a determinant. This allows the convenient computation of these Hilbert series. The formula follows from a determinantal formula for a generating function for families of nonintersecting lattice paths that stay inside a one-sided ladder-shaped region, in which the paths are counted with respect to turns.

A few years ago Foda, Quano, Kirillov and Warnaar proposed and proved various finite analogs of the celebrated Andrews-Gordon identities. In this paper we use these polynomial identities along with the combinatorial techniques introduced in our recent paper to derive Garrett, Ismail, Stanton type formulas for two variants of the Andrews-Gordon identities.

We give a bijective proof of a conjecture of Regev and Vershik on the equality of two multisets of hook numbers of certain skew-Young diagrams. The bijection proves a result that is stronger and more symmetric than the original conjecture, by means of a construction involving Dyck paths, a particular type of lattice path.

We compute the weighted enumeration of plane partitions contained in a given box with complementation symmetry where adding one half of an orbit of cubes and removing the other half of the orbit changes the weight by -1 as proposed by Kuperberg. We use nonintersecting lattice path families to accomplish this for transpose-complementary, cyclically symmetric transpose-complementary and totally symmetric self-complementary plane partitions. For symmetric transpose-complementary and self-complementary plane partitions we get partial results. We also describe Kuperberg's proof for the case of cyclically symmetric self-complementary plane partitions.

We answer some questions related to multiplicity formulas by Rosenthal and Zelevinsky and by Lakshmibai and Weyman for points on Schubert varieties in Grassmannians. In particular, we give combinatorial interpretations in terms of nonintersecting lattice paths of these formulas, which makes the equality of the two formulas immediately obvious. Furthermore we provide an alternative determinantal formula for these multiplicities, and we show that they count semistandard tableaux of unusual shapes.

We state and prove several theorems that demonstrate how the coordinate Bethe Ansatz for the eigenvectors of suitable transfer matrices of a generalised inhomogeneous five-vertex model on the square lattice, given certain conditions hold, is equivalent to the Gessel-Viennot determinant for the number of configurations of $N$ non-intersecting directed lattice paths, or vicious walkers, with various boundary conditions. Our theorems are sufficiently general to allow generalisation to any regular planar lattice.
Enumeration of lozenge tilings of hexagons with a central triangular hole

We deal with unweighted and weighted enumerations of lozenge tilings of a hexagon with side lengths $a,b+m,c,a+m,b,c+m$, where an equilateral triangle of side length $m$ has been removed from the center. We give closed formulas for the plain enumeration and for a certain $(-1)$-enumeration of these lozenge tilings. In the case that $a=b=c$, we also provide closed formulas for certain weighted enumerations of those lozenge tilings that are cyclically symmetric. For $m=0$, the latter formulas specialize to statements about weighted enumerations of cyclically symmetric plane partitions. One such specialization gives a proof of a conjecture of Stembridge on a certain weighted count of cyclically symmetric plane partitions. The tools employed in our proofs are nonstandard applications of the theory of nonintersecting lattice paths and determinant evaluations. In particular, we evaluate the determinants $\det_{0\le i,j\le n-1}\big(\om δ_{ij}+\binom {m+i+j}j\big)$, where $\om$ is any 6th root of unity. These determinant evaluations are variations of a famous result due to Andrews (Invent. Math. 53 (1979), 193--225), which corresponds to $\om=1$.
Inhomogeneous lattice paths, generalized Kostka polynomials and A$_{n-1}$ supernomials

Inhomogeneous lattice paths are introduced as ordered sequences of rectangular Young tableaux thereby generalizing recent work on the Kostka polynomials by Nakayashiki and Yamada and by Lascoux, Leclerc and Thibon. Motivated by these works and by Kashiwara's theory of crystal bases we define a statistic on paths yielding two novel classes of polynomials. One of these provides a generalization of the Kostka polynomials while the other, which we name the A$_{n-1}$ supernomial, is a $q$-deformation of the expansion coefficients of products of Schur polynomials. Many well-known results for Kostka polynomials are extended leading to representations of our polynomials in terms of a charge statistic on Littlewood-Richardson tableaux and in terms of fermionic configuration sums. Several identities for the generalized Kostka polynomials and the A$_{n-1}$ supernomials are proven or conjectured. Finally, a connection between the supernomials and Bailey's lemma is made.

This survey article describes a method for choosing uniformly at random from any finite set whose objects can be viewed as constituting a distributive lattice. The method is based on ideas of the author and David Wilson for using ``coupling from the past'' to remove initialization bias from Monte Carlo randomization. The article describes several applications to specific kinds of combinatorial objects such as tilings, constrained lattice paths, and alternating-sign matrices.

We show how lattice paths and the reflection principle can be used to give easy proofs of unimodality results. In particular, we give a "one-line" combinatorial proof of the unimodality of the binomial coefficients. Other examples include products of binomial coefficients, polynomials related to the Legendre polynomials, and a result connected to a conjecture of Simion.

We compute the number of perfect matchings of an $M\times N$ Aztec rectangle where $|N-M|$ vertices have been removed along a line. A particular case solves a problem posed by Propp. Our enumeration results follow from certain identities for Schur functions, which are established by the combinatorics of nonintersecting lattice paths.
The number of rhombus tilings of a "punctured" hexagon and the minor summation formula

We compute the number of all rhombus tilings of a hexagon with sides $a,b+1,c,a+1,b,c+1$, of which the central triangle is removed, provided $a,b,c$ have the same parity. The result is a product of four numbers, each of which counts the number of plane partitions inside a given box. The proof uses nonintersecting lattice paths and a new identity for Schur functions, which is proved by means of the minor summation formula of Ishikawa and Wakayama. A symmetric generalization of this identity is stated as a conjecture.
