Based on a bijection between domino tilings of an Aztec diamond and non-intersecting lattice paths, a simple proof of the Aztec diamond theorem is given in terms of Hankel determinants of the large and small Schröder numbers.

We consider posets of lattice paths (endowed with a natural order) and begin the study of such structures. We give an algebraic condition to recognize which ones of these posets are lattices. Next we study the class of Dyck lattices (i.e., lattices of Dyck paths) and give a recursive construction for them. The last section is devoted to the presentation of a couple of open problems.
Why Delannoy numbers?

This article is not a research paper, but a little note on the history of combinatorics: We present here a tentative short biography of Henri Delannoy, and a survey of his most notable works. This answers to the question raised in the title, as these works are related to lattice paths enumeration, to the so-called Delannoy numbers, and were the first general way to solve Ballot-like problems. These numbers appear in probabilistic game theory, alignments of DNA sequences, tiling problems, temporal representation models, analysis of algorithms and combinatorial structures.

We introduce the minor-closed, dual-closed class of multi-path matroids. We give a polynomial-time algorithm for computing the Tutte polynomial of a multi-path matroid, we describe their basis activities, and we prove some basic structural properties. Key elements of this work are two complementary perspectives we develop for these matroids: on the one hand, multi-path matroids are transversal matroids that have special types of presentations; on the other hand, the bases of multi-path matroids can be viewed as sets of lattice paths in certain planar diagrams.
Counting Lattice Paths By Gessel Pairs
We count a large class of lattice paths by using factorizations of free monoids. Besides the classical lattice paths counting problems related to Catalan numbers, we give a new approach to the problem of counting walks on the slit plane (walks avoid a half line) that was first solved by Bousquet-Mélou and Schaeffer. We also solve a problem about walks in the half plane avoiding a half line by subsequently applying the factorizations of two different Gessel pairs, giving a generalization of a result of Bousquet-Mélou.

We extend the Razumov-Stroganov conjecture relating the groundstate of the O(1) spin chain to alternating sign matrices, by relating the groundstate of the monodromy matrix of the O(1) model to the so-called refined alternating sign matrices, i.e. with prescribed configuration of their first row, as well as to refined fully-packed loop configurations on a square grid, keeping track both of the loop connectivity and of the configuration of their top row. We also conjecture a direct relation between this groundstate and refined totally symmetric self-complementary plane partitions, namely, in their formulation as sets of non-intersecting lattice paths, with prescribed last steps of all paths.

The Welschinger invariants of real rational algebraic surfaces are natural analogues of the genus zero Gromov-Witten invariants. We establish a tropical formula to calculate the Welschinger invariants of real toric Del Pezzo surfaces for any conjugation-invariant configuration of points. The formula expresses the Welschinger invariants via the total multiplicity of certain tropical curves (non-Archimedean amoebas) passing through generic configurations of points, and then via the total multiplicity of some lattice path in the convex lattice polygon associated with a given surface. We also present the results of computation of Welschinger invariants, obtained jointly with I. Itenberg and V. Kharlamov.
The Ring of Malcev-Neumann Series and the Residue Theorem
We develop a theory of the field of double Laurent series, iterated Laurent series, and Malcev-Neumann series that applies to most constant term evaluation problems. These include (i) MacMahon's partition analysis, counting solutions of systems of linear Diophantine equations or inequalities, counting the number of lattice points in convex polytopes, (ii) evaluating combinatorial sums and their generating functions, and proving combinatorial identities, and (iii) lattice path enumeration such as walks on the slit plane and walks on the quarter plane.
In the general setting of this new theory, the natural definition of "taking the constant term" of a formal series works well and thus the operators of taking constant terms commute with each other. The proof of Bousquet-Mélou and Schaeffer's conjecture about walks on the slit plane is included. In addition, the counting problem of walks on the half plane avoiding the half line is solved. Jacobi's multivariate residue theorem is generalized to a field of Malcev-Neumann series, which gives a new interpretation and a better understanding of the residue theorem. One application of the residue theorem is a concise proof of Dyson's conjecture.
A new algorithm for partial fraction decompositions is developed. This new algorithm is fast and uses little storage space. It also results in an efficient algorithm for MacMahon's partition analysis and related constant term evaluations.
Lattice Path Matroids: Structural Properties

This paper studies structural aspects of lattice path matroids, a class of transversal matroids that is closed under taking minors and duals. Among the basic topics treated are direct sums, duals, minors, circuits, and connected flats. One of the main results is a characterization of lattice path matroids in terms of fundamental flats, which are special connected flats from which one can recover the paths that define the matroid. We examine some aspects related to key topics in the literature of transversal matroids and we determine the connectivity of lattice path matroids. We also introduce notch matroids, a minor-closed, dual-closed subclass of lattice path matroids, and we find their excluded minors.
Alternating sign matrices with one -1 under vertical reflection

We define a bijection that transforms an alternating sign matrix A with one -1 into a pair (N,E) where N is a (so called) ``neutral'' alternating sign matrix (with one -1) and E is an integer. The bijection preserves the classical parameters of Mills, Robbins and Rumsey as well as three new parameters (including E). It translates vertical reflection of A into vertical reflection of N. A hidden symmetry allows the interchange of E with one of the remaining two new parameters. A second bijection transforms (N,E) into a configuration of lattice paths called ``mixed configuration''.

We compute the generating function of column-strict plane partitions with parts in {1,2,...,n}, at most c columns, p rows of odd length and k parts equal to n. This refines both, Krattenthaler's ["The major counting of nonintersecting lattice paths and generating functions for tableaux", Mem. Amer. Math. Soc. 115 (1995)] and the author's ["A method for proving polynomial enumeration formulas", preprint] refinement of the Bender-Knuth (ex-)Conjecture. The result is proved by an extension of the method for proving polynomial enumeration formulas which was introduced by the author to q-quasi-polynomials.
Enumerative tropical algebraic geometry in R2

The paper establishes a formula for enumeration of curves of arbitrary genus in toric surfaces. It turns out that such curves can be counted by means of certain lattice paths in the Newton polygon. The formula was announced earlier in http://arxiv.org/abs/math.AG/0209253.
The result is established with the help of the so-called tropical algebraic geometry. This geometry allows one to replace complex toric varieties with the Euclidean n-space and holomorphic curves with certain piecewise-linear graphs there.

The initial purpose of this paper is to provide a combinatorial proof of the minor summation formula of Pfaffians based on the lattice path method. There we related Plücker relations with the minor summation formula of Pfaffians to simplify its proof by lattice paths. The second aim is to find a various applications of the minor summation formula. First we studied a variant of the Sundquist formula established in J. Alg. Combin. {\bf 5} (1996). Next we gave a simple proof of Kawanaka's formula concerning a $q$-series identity involving Schur functions in Osaka J. Math. {\bf 36} (1999). We also establish a certain identity similar to the Kawanaka formula, and give a combinatorial proof of the determinant version of his formula in Osaka J. Math. {\bf 38} (2001).
Nonintersecting lattice paths on the cylinder
We show how a formula concerning ``vicious walkers'' (which basically are nonintersecting lattice paths) on the cylinder given by P.J. Forrester can be proved and generalized by using the Lindström--Gessel--Viennot method, after having things set up in the right way. We apply the corresponding results to the (thermodynamic limit of the) free energy of the ``lock step model of vicious walkers'', thus completing (and in one instance correcting) the work of Forrester . Moreover, we also show how a related formula given by I. Gessel and C. Krattenthaler can be obtained from the same ``point of view''.

We present a complete solution to the so-called tennis ball problem, which is equivalent to counting lattice paths in the plane that use North and East steps and lie between certain boundaries. The solution takes the form of explicit expressions for the corresponding generating functions. Our method is based on the properties of Tutte polynomials of matroids associated to lattice paths. We also show how the same method provides a solution to a wide generalization of the problem.

Let G_n denote the set of lattice paths from (0,0) to (n,n) with steps of the form (i,j) where i and j are nonnegative integers, not both 0. Let D_n denote the set of paths in G_n with steps restricted to (1,0), (0,1), (1,1), so-called Delannoy paths. Stanley has shown that | G_n | = 2^(n-1) | D_n | and Sulanke has given a bijective proof. Here we give a simple parameter on G_n that is uniformly distributed over the 2^(n-1) subsets of [n-1] = {1,2,...,n-1} and takes the value [n-1] precisely on the Delannoy paths.

We give asymptotic formulas for the multiplicities of weights and irreducible summands in high-tensor powers $V_λ^{\otimes N}$ of an irreducible representation $V_λ$ of a compact connected Lie group $G$. The weights are allowed to depend on $N$, and we obtain several regimes of pointwise asymptotics, ranging from a central limit region to a large deviations region. We use a complex steepest descent method that applies to general asymptotic counting problems for lattice paths with steps in a convex polytope.
The excedances and descents of bi-increasing permutations
Starting from some considerations we make about the relations between certain difference statistics and the classical permutation statistics we study permutations whose inversion number and excedance difference coincide. It turns out that these (so-called bi-increasing) permutations are just the 321-avoiding ones. The paper investigates their excedance and descent structure. In particular, we find some nice combinatorial interpretations for the distribution coefficients of the number of excedances and descents, respectively, and their difference analogues over the bi-increasing permutations in terms of parallelogram polyominoes and 2-Motzkin paths. This yields a connection between restricted permutations, parallelogram polyominoes, and lattice paths that reveals the relations between several well-known bijections given for these objects (e.g. by Delest-Viennot, Billey-Jockusch-Stanley, Francon-Viennot, and Foata-Zeilberger). As an application, we enumerate skew diagrams according to their rank and give a simple combinatorial proof for a result concerning the symmetry of the joint distribution of the number of excedances and inversions, respectively, over the symmetric group.

Fix two lattice paths P and Q from (0,0) to (m,r) that use East and North steps with P never going above Q. We show that the lattice paths that go from (0,0) to (m,r) and that remain in the region bounded by P and Q can be identified with the bases of a particular type of transversal matroid, which we call a lattice path matroid. We consider a variety of enumerative aspects of these matroids and we study three important matroid invariants, namely the Tutte polynomial and, for special types of lattice path matroids, the characteristic polynomial and the beta invariant. In particular, we show that the Tutte polynomial is the generating function for two basic lattice path statistics and we show that certain sequences of lattice path matroids give rise to sequences of Tutte polynomials for which there are relatively simple generating functions. We show that Tutte polynomials of lattice path matroids can be computed in polynomial time. Also, we obtain a new result about lattice paths from an analysis of the beta invariant of certain lattice path matroids.
Two injective proofs of a conjecture of Simion
Simion conjectured the unimodality of a sequence counting lattice paths in a grid with a Ferrers diagram removed from the northwest corner. Recently, Hildebrand and then Wang proved the stronger result that this sequence is actually log concave. Both proofs were mainly algebraic in nature. We give two combinatorial proofs of this theorem.
