The {\sf Shi hyperplane arrangement} Shi(n) was introduced by Shi to study the Kazhdan-Lusztig cellular structure of the affine symmetric group. The {\sf Ish hyperplane arrangement} Ish(n) was introduced by Armstrong in the study of diagonal harmonics. Armstrong and Rhoades discovered a deep combinatorial similarity between the Shi and Ish arrangements. We solve a collection of problems posed by Armstrong and Armstrong-Rhoades by giving bijections between regions of Shi(n) and Ish(n) which preserve certain statistics. Our bijections generalize to the `deleted arrangements' Shi(G) and Ish(G) which depend on a subgraph G of the complete graph K_n on n vertices. The key tools in our bijections are the introduction of an Ish analog of parking functions called {\sf rook words} and a new instance of the cycle lemma of enumerative combinatorics.

For a closure space (P,f) with f(\emptyset)=\emptyset, the closures of open subsets of P, called the regular closed subsets, form an ortholattice Reg(P,f), extending the poset Clop(P,f) of all clopen subsets. If (P,f) is a finite convex geometry, then Reg(P,f) is pseudocomplemented. The Dedekind-MacNeille completion of the poset of regions of any central hyperplane arrangement can be obtained in this way, hence it is pseudocomplemented. The lattice Reg(P,f) carries a particularly interesting structure for special types of convex geometries, that we call closure spaces of semilattice type. For finite such closure spaces, (1) Reg(P,f) satisfies an infinite collection of stronger and stronger quasi-identities, weaker than both meet- and join-semidistributivity. Nevertheless it may fail semidistributivity. (2) If Reg(P,f) is semidistributive, then it is a bounded homomorphic image of a free lattice. (3) Clop(P,f) is a lattice iff every regular closed set is clopen. The extended permutohedron R(G) on a graph G, and the extended permutohedron Reg(S) on a join-semilattice S, are both defined as lattices of regular closed sets of suitable closure spaces. While the lattice of regular closed sets is, in the semilattice context, always the Dedekind Mac-Neille completion of the poset of clopen sets, this does not always hold in the graph context, although it always does so for finite block graphs and for cycles. Furthermore, both R(G) and Reg(S) are bounded homomorphic images of free lattices.

These lecture notes are based on lectures given by the author at the summer school "Arrangements in Pyrénées" in June 2012. We survey and compare various compactifications of complex hyperplane arrangement complements. In particular, we review the Gel'fand-MacPherson construction, Kapranov's visible contours compactification, and De Concini and Procesi's wonderful compactification. We explain how these constructions are unified by some ideas from the modern origins of tropical geometry. The paper contains a few new arguments intended to make the presentation as self-contained as possible.
Valid Orderings of Real Hyperplane Arrangements

Given a real finite hyperplane arrangement A and a point p not on any of the hyperplanes, we define an arrangement vo(A,p), called the *valid order arrangement*, whose regions correspond to the different orders in which a line through p can cross the hyperplanes in A. If A is the set of affine spans of the facets of a convex polytope P and p lies in the interior of P, then the valid orderings with respect to p are just the line shellings of p where the shelling line contains p. When p is sufficiently generic, the intersection lattice of vo(A,p) is the *Dilworth truncation* of the semicone of A. Various applications and examples are given. For instance, we determine the maximum number of line shellings of a d-polytope with m facets when the shelling line contains a fixed point p. If P is the order polytope of a poset, then the sets of facets visible from a point involve a generalization of chromatic polynomials related to list colorings.

We study the critical points of monomial functions over an algebraic subset of the probability simplex. The number of critical points on the Zariski closure is a topological invariant of that embedded projective variety, known as its maximum likelihood degree. We present an introduction to this theory and its statistical motivations. Many favorite objects from combinatorial algebraic geometry are featured: toric varieties, A-discriminants, hyperplane arrangements, Grassmannians, and determinantal varieties. Several new results are included, especially on the likelihood correspondence and its bidegree. These notes were written for the second author's lectures at the CIME-CIRM summer course on Combinatorial Algebraic Geometry at Levico Terme in June 2013.

Many combinatorial and topological invariants of a hyperplane arrangement can be computed in terms of its Tutte polynomial. Similarly, many invariants of a hypertoric arrangement can be computed in terms of its arithmetic Tutte polynomial. We compute the arithmetic Tutte polynomials of the classical root systems of types A,B,C, and D, with respect to their integer, root, and weight lattices. We do it in two ways: by introducing a finite field method for arithmetic Tutte polynomials, and by enumerating signed graphs with respect to six parameters.

The tropical Stiefel map associates to a tropical matrix A its tropical Pluecker vector of maximal minors, and thus a tropical linear space L(A). We call the L(A)s obtained in this way Stiefel tropical linear spaces. We prove that they are dual to certain matroid subdivisions of polytopes of transversal matroids, and we relate their combinatorics to a canonically associated tropical hyperplane arrangement. We also explore a broad connection with the secondary fan of the Newton polytope of the product of all maximal minors of a matrix. In addition, we investigate the natural parametrization of L(A) arising from the tropical linear map defined by A.

It is proved that the broken circuit complex of an ordered matroid is Gorenstein if and only if it is a complete intersection. Several characterizations for a matroid that admits such an order are then given, with particular interest in the $h$-vector of broken circuit complexes of the matroid. As an application, we prove that the Orlik--Terao algebra of a hyperplane arrangement is Gorenstein if and only if it is a complete intersection. Interestingly, our result shows that the complete intersection property (and hence the Gorensteinness as well) of the Orlik--Terao algebra can be determined from the last two nonzero entries of its $h$-vector.

We study the exactness of certain combinatorially defined complexes which generalize the Orlik-Solomon algebra of a geometric lattice. The main results pertain to complex reflection arrangements and their restrictions. In particular, we consider the corresponding relation complexes and give a simple proof of the $n$-formality of these hyperplane arrangements. As an application, we are able to bound the Castelnouvo-Mumford regularity of certain modules over polynomial rings associated to Coxeter arrangements (real reflection arrangements) and their restrictions. The modules in question are defined using the relation complex of the Coxeter arrangement and fiber polytopes of the dual Coxeter zonotope. They generalize the algebra of piecewise polynomial functions on the original arrangement.

We define a partial ordering on the set Q = Q(M) of pairs of topes of an oriented matroid M, and show the geometric realization |Q| of the order complex of Q has the same homotopy type as the Salvetti complex of M. For any element e of the ground set, the complex |Qe| associated to the rank-one oriented matroid on {e} has the homotopy type of the circle. There is a natural free simplicial action of Z4 on |Q|, with orbit space isomorphic to the order complex of the poset Q(M,e) associated to the pointed (or affine) oriented matroid (M,e). If M is the oriented matroid of an arrangement A of linear hyperplanes in real space, the Z_4 action corresponds to the diagonal action of C* on the complement M of the complexification of A: |Q| is equivariantly homotopy-equivalent to M under the identification of Z_4 with {+1, i, -1, -i}, and |Q(M, e)| is homotopy-equivalent to the complement of the decone of A relative to the hyperplane corresponding to e. All constructions and arguments are carried out at the level of the underlying posets. If a group G acts on the set of topes of M preserving adjacency, then G acts simplicially on |Q|. We also show that the class of fundamental groups of such complexes is strictly larger than the class of fundamental groups of complements of complex hyperplane arrangements. Specifically, the group of the non-Pappus arrange- ment is not isomorphic to any realizable arrangement group.

The image of the complement of a hyperplane arrangement under a monomial map can be tropicalized combinatorially using matroid theory. We apply this to classical moduli spaces that are associated with complex reflection arrangements. Starting from modular curves, we visit the Segre cubic, the Igusa quartic, and moduli of marked del Pezzo surfaces of degrees 2 and 3. Our primary example is the Burkhardt quartic, whose tropicalization is a 3-dimensional fan in 39-dimensional space. This effectuates a synthesis of concrete and abstract approaches to tropical moduli of genus 2 curves.

We examine the first non-vanishing higher homotopy group, $π_p$, of the complement of a hypersolvable, non--supersolvable, complex hyperplane arrangement, as a module over the group ring of the fundamental group, $\Zπ_1$. We give a presentation for the $I$--adic completion of $π_p$. We deduce that the second nilpotent $I$--adic quotient of $π_p$ is determined by the combinatorics of the arrangement, and we give a combinatorial formula for the second associated graded piece, $\gr^1_I π_p$. We relate the torsion of this graded piece to the dimensions of the minimal generating systems of the Orlik--Solomon ideal of the arrangement $\A$ in degree $p+2$, for various field coefficients. When $\A$ is associated to a finite simple graph, we show that $\gr^1_I π_p$ is torsion--free, with rank explicitly computable from the graph.
On symmetry groups of oriented matroids
Symmetries of geometric structures such as hyperplane arrangements, point configurations and polytopes have been studied extensively for a long time. However, symmetries of oriented matroids, a common combinatorial abstraction of them, are not understood well. In this paper, we aim to obtain a better understanding of symmetries of oriented matroids. First, we put focus on symmetries of matroids, and give a general construction that generates a $3$-dimensional point configuration with a matroidal symmetry that cannot be realized as a geometric symmetry. The construction is based on the observation that every non-trivial rotation in the $2$-dimensional Euclidean space has a unique fixed point but that there is no corresponding property for matroids. The construction suggests that the lack of the fixed point theorem generates a big gap between matroidal symmetries and geometric symmetries of point configurations. Motivated by this insight, we study fixed-point properties for symmetry groups of oriented matroids. For rotational symmetries of oriented matroids, we prove a useful property, which corresponds to the uniqueness of fixed points (in the rank $3$ case). Using it, we classify rotational and full symmetry groups of simple oriented matroids of rank $3$. In addition, we define fixed-point-admitting (FPA) property for subgroups of symmetry groups of oriented matroids, and make classification of rotational symmetry groups with FPA property of simple acyclic oriented matroids of rank $4$. We conjecture that the symmetry group of every acyclic simple oriented matroid has FPA property.

We study the bounded regions in a generic slice of the hyperplane arrangement in $\mathbb{R}^n$ consisting of the hyperplanes defined by $x_i$ and $x_i+x_j$. The bounded regions are in bijection with several classes of combinatorial objects, including the ordered partitions of $[n]$ all of whose left-to-right minima occur at odd locations and the drawings of rooted plane trees with $n+1$ vertices. These are sequences of rooted plane trees such that each tree in a sequence can be obtained from the next one by removing a leaf.

There are several topological spaces associated to a complex hyperplane arrangement: the complement and its boundary manifold, as well as the Milnor fiber and its own boundary. All these spaces are related in various ways, primarily by a set of interlocking fibrations. We use cohomology with coefficients in rank 1 local systems on the complement of the arrangement to gain information on the homology of the other three spaces, and on the monodromy operators of the various fibrations.

The left regular band structure on a hyperplane arrangement and its representation theory provide an important connection between semigroup theory and algebraic combinatorics. A finite semigroup embeds in a real hyperplane face monoid if and only if it is in the quasivariety generated by the monoid obtained by adjoining an identity to the two-element left zero semigroup. We prove that this quasivariety is on the one hand polynomial time decidable, and on the other minimally non-finitely based. A similar result is obtained for the semigroups embeddable in complex hyperplane semigroups.
