Algebraic Shifting and f-Vector Theory
Published in Ph. D. thesis. The Hebrew University of Jerusalem (2007) • Search Publication
This thesis focuses on algebraic shifting and its applications to f-vector theory of simplicial complexes and more general graded posets. In particular, several approaches and partial results concerning the g-conjecture for simplicial spheres are presented here.

New path description for the M(k+1,2k+3) models and the dual Z_k graded parafermions
Published in J.Stat.Mech.0711:P11005,2007 • View Publication • BIB
We present a new path description for the states of the non-unitary M(k+1,2k+3) models. This description differs from the one induced by the Forrester-Baxter solution, in terms of configuration sums, of their restricted-solid-on-solid model. The proposed path representation is actually very similar to the one underlying the unitary minimal models M(k+1,k+2), with an analogous Fermi-gas interpretation. This interpretation leads to fermionic expressions for the finitized M(k+1,2k+3) characters, whose infinite-length limit represent new fermionic characters for the irreducible modules. The M(k+1,2k+3) models are also shown to be related to the Z_k graded parafermions via a (q to 1/q) duality transformation.

Gröbner bases and Betti numbers of monoidal complexes
Published in Michigan Math. J. 57 (2008), 71-91 • View Publication • BIB
In this note we consider monoidal complexes and their associated algebras, called toric face rings. These rings generalize Stanley-Reisner rings and affine monoid algebras. We compute initial ideals of the presentation ideal of a toric face ring, and determine its graded Betti numbers. Our results generalize celebrated theorems of Hochster in combinatorial commutative algebra.

Cohen-Macaulayness and computation of Newton graded toric rings
Published in J. Pure Appl. Alg. 213,8 (2009), 1522-1535. • View Publication • BIB
Let $H$ be a positive semigroup in $\mathbb{Z}^d$ generated by $A$, and let $K[H]$ be the associated semigroup ring over a field $K$. We investigate heredity of the Cohen-Macaulay property from $K[H]$ to both its $A$-Newton graded ring and to its face rings. We show by example that neither one inherits in general the Cohen-Macaulay property. On the positive side we show that for every $H$ there exist generating sets $A$ for which the Newton graduation preserves Cohen-Macaulayness. This gives an elementary proof for an important vanishing result on $A$-hypergeometric Euler-Koszul homology. As a tool for our investigations we develop an algorithm to compute algorithmically the Newton filtration on a toric ring.

Contracted ideals and the Groebner fan of the rational normal curve
Published • View Publication • BIB
The paper has two goals: the study the associated graded ring of contracted homogeneous ideals in $K[x,y]$ and the study of the Groebner fan of the ideal $P$ of the rational normal curve in ${\bf P}^d$. These two problems are, quite surprisingly, very tightly related. We completely classify the contracted ideals with a Cohen-Macaulay associated graded rings in terms of the numerical invariants arising from Zariski's factorization. We determine explicitly all the initial ideals (monomial or not) of $P$ that are Cohen-Macaulay.

Binary Search Tree insertion, the Hypoplactic insertion, and Dual Graded Graphs
Fomin (1994) introduced a notion of duality between two graded graphs on the same set of vertices. He also introduced a generalization to dual graded graphs of the classical Robinson-Schensted-Knuth algorithm. We show how Fomin's approach applies to the binary search tree insertion algorithm also known as sylvester insertion, and to the hypoplactic insertion algorithm.

On the Young-Fibonacci insertion algorithm
This work is concerned with some properties of the Young-Fibonacci insertion algorithm and its relation with Fomin's growth diagrams. It also investigates a relation between the combinatorics of Young-Fibonacci tableaux and the study of Okada's algebra associated to the Young-Fibonacci lattice. The original algorithm was introduced by Roby and we redefine it in such a way that both the insertion and recording tableaux of any permutation are \emph{conveniently} interpreted as chains in the Young-Fibonacci lattice. A property of Killpatrick's evacuation is given a simpler proof, but this evacuation is no longer needed in making Roby's and Fomin's constructions coincide. We provide the set of Young-Fibonacci tableaux of size $n$ with a structure of graded poset, induced by the weak order on permutations of the symmetric group, and realized by transitive closure of elementary transformations on tableaux. We show that this poset gives a combinatorial interpretation of the coefficients in the transition matrix from the analogue of complete symmetric functions to analogue of the Schur functions in Okada's algebra. We end with a quite similar observation for four posets on Young-tableaux studied by Taskin.

On the S_n-module structure of the noncommutative harmonics
Published in Journal of Combinatorial Theory, Series A, Volume 115, Issue 6, August 2008, pages 1077-1085. • View Publication • BIB
Using a noncommutative analog of Chevalley's decomposition of polynomials into symmetric polynomials times coinvariants due to Bergeron, Reutenauer, Rosas, and Zabrocki we compute the graded Frobenius series for their two sets of noncommutative harmonics with respect to the left action of the symmetric group (acting on variables). We use these results to derive the Frobenius series for the enveloping algebra of the derived free Lie algebra in n variables.

Vertex cover algebras of unimodular hypergraphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
It is proved that all vertex cover algebras of a hypergraph are standard graded if and only if the hypergraph is unimodular. This has interesting consequences on the symbolic powers of monomial ideals.

The Profile of relations
The {\it profile} of a relational structure $R$ is the function $φ_R$ which counts for every integer $n$ the number of its $n$-element substructures up to an isomorphism. Many counting functions are profiles. Interesting examples come from permutation groups. Some salient facts about the behavior of the profile are presented. Techniques from ordered sets and combinatorics (notably the notion of well-quasi-order, the related notions of ordered algebras, Ramsey theorem) are illustrated. Ongoing resarch suggests to view the profile of a relational structure $R$ as the Hilbert function of some graded algebra associated with $R$. A hint at the solution of a conjecture of P.J.Cameron on the integrity of the ring of the orbit algebra is given. Recent progress made with Y.Boudabbous and N.Thiéry on the conjecture that the profile is a quasi-polynomial if its growth is polynomial (and the structure has a finite kernel) are presented.

Twisted identities in Coxeter groups
Published • View Publication • BIB
Given a Coxeter system (W,S) equipped with an involutive automorphism T, the set of twisted identities is i(T) = {T(w)^{-1}w : w \in W}. We point out how i(T) shows up in several contexts and prove that if there is no s \in S such that sT(s) is of odd order greater than 1, then the Bruhat order on i(T) is a graded poset with rank function r given by halving the Coxeter length. Under the same condition, it is shown that the order complexes of the open intervals either are PL spheres or acyclic over the integers. In the general case, contractibility is shown for certain classes of intervals. Furthermore, we demonstrate that sometimes these posets are not graded. For the Poincaré series of i(T), i.e. its generating function with respect to r, a factorisation phenomenon is discussed.

Dual graded graphs for Kac-Moody algebras
Published • View Publication • BIB
Motivated by affine Schubert calculus, we construct a family of dual graded graphs $(Γ_s,Γ_w)$ for an arbitrary Kac-Moody algebra $\g(A)$. The graded graphs have the Weyl group $W$ of $\g(A)$ as vertex set and are labeled versions of the strong and weak orders of $W$ respectively. Using a construction of Lusztig for quivers with an admissible automorphism, we define folded insertion for a Kac-Moody algebra and obtain Sagan-Worley shifted insertion from Robinson-Schensted insertion as a special case. Drawing on work of Stembridge, we analyze the induced subgraphs of $(Γ_s,Γ_w)$ which are distributive posets.

Universal graded characters and limit of Lusztig $q$-analogues
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let G be a symplectic or orthogonal complex Lie group with Lie algebra g. As a G-module, the decomposition of the symmetric algebra S(g) into its irreducible components can be explicitely obtained by using identities due to Littlewood. We show that the multiplicities appearing in the decomposition of the k-th graded component of S(g) do not depend on the rank n of g providing n is sufficiently large. Thanks to a classical result by Kostant, we establish a similar result for the k-th graded component of the space H(g) of G-harmonic polynomials. These stabilization properties are equivalent to the existence of a limit in infinitely many variables for the graded characters associated to S(g) and H(g). The limits so obtained are formal series with coefficients in the ring of universal characters introduced by Koike and Terada. From Hesselink expression of the graded character of harmonics, the coefficient of degree k in the Lusztig q-analogue associated to the partition lambda and the weight 0 thus stablizes for n sufficiently large. By using Morris-type recurrence formulas, we prove that this is also true for the polynomials $K_{λ,μ}^{g}(q)$ where mu is a nonempty fixed partition. This can be reformulated in terms of a stability property for the dimension of the components of the Brylinski-Kostant filtration. We also associate to each pair of partitions (lambda, mu) formal series $K_{λ,μ}^{so}(q)$ and $K_{λ,μ}^{sp}(q)$, which can be regarded as natural limit of the Lusztig q-analogues. One gives a duality property for these limits and obtains simple expressions when lambda is a row or a column partition.

Betti numbers and shifts in minimal graded free resolutions
Published in Illinois J. Math. 54 (2010), no. 2, 449-467 • View Publication • BIB
Let S be a polynomial ring and R=S/I where I is a graded ideal of S. The Multiplicity Conjecture of Herzog, Huneke, and Srinivasan which was recently proved using the Boij-Soederberg theory states that the multiplicity of R is bounded above by a function of the maximal shifts in the minimal graded free resolution of R over S as well as bounded below by a function of the minimal shifts if R is Cohen-Macaulay. In this paper we study the related problem to show that the total Betti-numbers of R are also bounded above by a function of the shifts in the minimal graded free resolution of R as well as bounded below by another function of the shifts if R is Cohen-Macaulay. We also discuss the cases when these bounds are sharp.

On canonical modules of toric face rings
Published in Nagoya Math. J. 194 (2009), 69-90 • View Publication • BIB
Generalizing the concepts of Stanley-Reisner and affine monoid algebras, one can associate to a rational pointed fan the toric face ring. Assuming that this ring is Cohen-Macaulay, the main result of this paper is to characterize the situation when its canonical module is isomorphic to a fine graded ideal of the toric face ring. From this result several algebraic and combinatorial consequences are deduced in the situations where the fan may be related to a manifold with non-empty boundary, or the fan is a shellable fan.

Algebraic Structures on Grothendieck Groups of a Tower of Algebras
Published in J. Algebra 321 (2009), no. 8, 2068-2084 • View Publication • BIB
The Grothendieck group of the tower of symmetric group algebras has a self-dual graded Hopf algebra structure. Inspired by this, we introduce by way of axioms, a general notion of a tower of algebras and study two Grothendieck groups on this tower linked by a natural paring. Using representation theory, we show that our axioms give a structure of graded Hopf algebras on each Grothendieck groups and these structures are dual to each other. We give some examples to indicate why these axioms are necessary. We also give auxiliary results that are helpful to verify the axioms. We conclude with some remarks on generalized towers of algebras leading to a structure of generalized bialgebras (in the sense of Loday) on their Grothendieck groups.

Hilbert functions of d-regular ideals
Published • View Publication • BIB
In the present paper, we characterize all possible Hilbert functions of graded ideals in a polynomial ring whose regularity is smaller than or equal to $d$, where $d$ is a positive integer. In addition, we prove the following result which is a generalization of Bigatti, Hulett and Pardue's result: Let $p \geq 0$ and $d>0$ be integers. If the base field is a field of characteristic 0 and there is a graded ideal $I$ whose projective dimension $\mathrm{proj\ dim}(I)$ is smaller than or equal to $p$ and whose regularity $\mathrm{reg}(I)$ is smaller than or equal to $d$, then there exists a monomial ideal $L$ having the maximal graded Betti numbers among graded ideals $J$ which have the same Hilbert function as $I$ and which satisfy $\mathrm{proj dim}(J) \leq p$ and $\mathrm{reg}(J) \leq d$. We also prove the same fact for squarefree monomial ideals. The main methods for proofs are generic initial ideals and combinatorics on strongly stable ideals.

Blowup algebras of square-free monomial ideals and some links to combinatorial optimization problems
Published in Rocky Mountain J. Math. 39 (2009), no. 1, 71--102 • View Publication • BIB
Let I=(x^{v_1},...,x^{v_q} be a square-free monomial ideal of a polynomial ring K[x_1,...,x_n] over an arbitrary field K and let A be the incidence matrix with column vectors {v_1},...,{v_q}. We will establish some connections between algebraic properties of certain graded algebras associated to I and combinatorial optimization properties of certain polyhedrons and clutters associated to A and I respectively. Some applications to Rees algebras and combinatorial optimization are presented. We study a conjecture of Conforti and Cornuéjols using an algebraic approach.

Irregularity of hypergeometric systems via slopes along coordinate subspaces
Published in Duke Math. J. 142,3 (2008), 465-509 • View Publication • BIB
We study the irregularity sheaves attached to the $A$-hypergeometric $D$-module $M_A(β)$ introduced by Gel'fand et al., where $A\in\mathbb{Z}^{d\times n}$ is pointed of full rank and $β\in\mathbb{C}^d$. More precisely, we investigate the slopes of this module along coordinate subspaces. In the process we describe the associated graded ring to a positive semigroup ring for a filtration defined by an arbitrary weight vector $L$ on torus equivariant generators. To this end we introduce the $(A,L)$-umbrella, a simplicial complex determined by $A$ and $L$, and identify its facets with the components of the associated graded ring. We then establish a correspondence between the full $(A,L)$-umbrella and the components of the $L$-characteristic variety of $M_A(β)$. We compute in combinatorial terms the multiplicities of these components in the $L$-characteristic cycle of the associated Euler-Koszul complex, identifying them with certain intersection multiplicities. We deduce from this that slopes of $M_A(β)$ are combinatorial, independent of $β$, and in one-to-one correspondence with jumps of the $(A,L)$-umbrella. This confirms a conjecture of Sturmfels and gives a converse of a theorem of Hotta: $M_A(β)$ is regular if and only if $A$ defines a projective variety.
