Littlewood-Richardson coefficients via mirror symmetry for cluster varieties
Published • View Publication • BIB
I prove that the full Fock-Goncharov conjecture holds for $\mathrm{Conf}_3^\times(\widetilde{\mathcal{F}\hspace{-1.6pt}\ell})$-- the configuration space of triples of decorated flags in generic position. As a key ingredient of this proof, I exhibit a maximal green sequence for the quiver of the initial seed. I compute the Landau-Ginzburg potential $W$ on $\mathrm{Conf}_3^\times(\widetilde{\mathcal{F}\hspace{-1.6pt}\ell})^\vee$ associated to the partial minimal model $\mathrm{Conf}_3^\times(\widetilde{\mathcal{F}\hspace{-1.6pt}\ell}) \subset \mathrm{Conf}_3(\widetilde{\mathcal{F}\hspace{-1.6pt}\ell})$. The integral points of the associated "cone" ${Ξ:=\left\{W^T \geq 0\right\} \subset \mathrm{Conf}_3^\times(\widetilde{\mathcal{F}\hspace{-1.6pt}\ell})^\vee\left({\mathbb{R}^T}\right)}$ parametrize a basis for $\mathcal{O}\left(\mathrm{Conf}_3(\widetilde{\mathcal{F}\hspace{-1.6pt}\ell})\right) = \bigoplus \left(V_α\otimes V_β\otimes V_γ\right)^G$ and encode the Littlewood-Richardson coefficients $c^γ_{αβ}$. In the initial seed, the inequalities defining $Ξ$ are exactly Zelevinsky's tail positivity conditions. I exhibit a unimodular $p^*$ map that identifies $W$ with the potential of Goncharov-Shen on $\mathrm{Conf}_3^\times(\widetilde{\mathcal{F}\hspace{-1.6pt}\ell})$ and $Ξ$ with the Knutson-Tao hive cone.

Semi-infinite Plücker relations and Weyl modules
Published • View Publication • BIB
The goal of this paper is twofold. First, we write down the semi-infinite Plücker relations, describing the Drinfeld-Plücker embedding of the (formal version of) semi-infinite flag varieties in type A. Second, we study the homogeneous coordinate ring, i.e. the quotient by the ideal generated by the semi-infinite Plücker relations. We establish the isomorphism with the algebra of dual global Weyl modules and derive a new character formula.

The homotopy theory of polyhedral products associated with flag complexes
Published in Compositio Math. 155 (2019), no. 1, 206-228 • View Publication • BIB
If $K$ is a simplicial complex on $m$ vertices the flagification of $K$ is the minimal flag complex $K^f$ on the same vertex set that contains $K$. Letting $L$ be the set of vertices, there is a sequence of simplicial inclusions $L\to K\to K^f$. This induces a sequence of maps of polyhedral products $(\underline X,\underline A)^L\stackrel g\longrightarrow(\underline X,\underline A)^K\stackrel f\longrightarrow (\underline X,\underline A)^{K^f}$. We show that $Ωf$ and $Ωf\circΩg$ have right homotopy inverses and draw consequences. For a flag complex $K$ the polyhedral product of the form $(\underline{CY},\underline Y)^K$ is a co-$H$-space if and only if the $1$-skeleton of $K$ is a chordal graph, and we deduce that the maps $f$ and $f\circ g$ have right homotopy inverses in this case.
Arc Transitive Maps with underlying Rose Window Graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let ${\cal M}$ be a map with the underlying graph $Γ$. The automorphism group $Aut({\cal M})$ induces a natural action on the set of all vertex-edge-face incident triples, called {\em flags} of ${\cal M}$. The map ${\cal M}$ is said to be a {\em $k$-orbit} map if $Aut({\cal M})$ has $k$ orbits on the set of all flags of ${\cal M}$. It is known that there are seven different classes of $2$-orbit maps, with only four of them corresponding to arc-transitive maps, that is maps for which $Aut{\cal M}$ acts arc-transitively on the underlying graph $Γ$. The Petrie dual operator links these four classes in two pairs, one of which corresponds to the chiral maps and their Petrie duals. In this paper we focus on the other pair of classes of $2$-orbit arc-transitive maps. We investigate the connection of these maps to consistent cycles of the underlying graph with special emphasis on such maps of smallest possible valence, namely $4$. We then give a complete classification of such maps whose underlying graphs are arc-transitive Rose Window graphs.

Purity and separation for oriented matroids
Published • View Publication • BIB
Leclerc and Zelevinsky, motivated by the study of quasi-commuting quantum flag minors, introduced the notions of strongly separated and weakly separated collections. These notions are closely related to the theory of cluster algebras, to the combinatorics of the double Bruhat cells, and to the totally positive Grassmannian. A key feature, called the purity phenomenon, is that every maximal by inclusion strongly (resp., weakly) separated collection of subsets in $[n]$ has the same cardinality. In this paper, we extend these notions and define $\mathcal{M}$-separated collections for any oriented matroid $\mathcal{M}$. We show that maximal by size $\mathcal{M}$-separated collections are in bijection with fine zonotopal tilings (if $\mathcal{M}$ is a realizable oriented matroid), or with one-element liftings of $\mathcal{M}$ in general position (for an arbitrary oriented matroid). We introduce the class of pure oriented matroids for which the purity phenomenon holds: an oriented matroid $\mathcal{M}$ is pure if $\mathcal{M}$-separated collections form a pure simplicial complex, i.e., any maximal by inclusion $\mathcal{M}$-separated collection is also maximal by size. We pay closer attention to several special classes of oriented matroids: oriented matroids of rank $3$, graphical oriented matroids, and uniform oriented matroids. We classify pure oriented matroids in these cases. An oriented matroid of rank $3$ is pure if and only if it is a positroid (up to reorienting and relabeling its ground set). A graphical oriented matroid is pure if and only if its underlying graph is an outerplanar graph, that is, a subgraph of a triangulation of an $n$-gon. We give a simple conjectural characterization of pure oriented matroids by forbidden minors and prove it for the above classes of matroids (rank $3$, graphical, uniform).
From Dyck paths to standard Young tableaux
Published in Ann. Comb. 24 (2020), no. 1, 69-93 • View Publication • BIB
We present nine bijections between classes of Dyck paths and classes of standard Young tableaux (SYT). In particular, we consider SYT of flag and rectangular shapes, we give Dyck path descriptions for certain SYT of height at most 3, and we introduce a special class of labeled Dyck paths of semilength $n$ that is shown to be in bijection with the set of all SYT with $n$ boxes. In addition, we present bijections from certain classes of Motzkin paths to SYT. As a natural framework for some of our bijections, we introduce a class of set partitions which in some sense is dual to the known class of noncrossing partitions.

Undesired parking spaces and contractible pieces of the noncrossing partition link
Published • View Publication • BIB
There are two natural simplicial complexes associated to the noncrossing partition lattice: the order complex of the full lattice and the order complex of the lattice with its bounding elements removed. The latter is a complex that we call the noncrossing partition link because it is the link of an edge in the former. The first author and his coauthors conjectured that various collections of simplices of the noncrossing partition link (determined by the undesired parking spaces in the corresponding parking functions) form contractible subcomplexes. In this article we prove their conjecture by combining the fact that the star of a simplex in a flag complex is contractible with the second author's theory of noncrossing hypertrees.

Walk algebras, distinguished subexpressions, and point counting in Kac-Moody flag varieties
Published • View Publication • BIB
We study walk algebras and Hecke algebras for Kac-Moody root systems. Each choice of orientation for the set of real roots gives rise to a corresponding "oriented" basis for each of these algebras. We show that the notion of distinguished subexpression naturally arises when studying the transition matrix between oriented bases. We then relate these notions to the geometry of Kac-Moody flag varieties and Bott-Samelson varieties. In particular, we show that the number of points over a finite field in certain intersections of these varieties is given by change of basis coefficients between oriented bases of the Hecke algebra. Using these results we give streamlined derivations of Deodhar's formula for $R$-polynomials and point-counting formulas for specializations of nonsymmetric Macdonald polynomials $E_λ(\mathsf{q},t)$ at $\mathsf{q}=0,\infty$.

Applying Parabolic Peterson: Affine Algebras and the Quantum Cohomology of the Grassmannian
Published in J. Comb. 10 (2019), no. 1, 129-162 • View Publication • BIB
The Peterson isomorphism relates the homology of the affine Grassmannian to the quantum cohomology of any flag variety. In the case of a partial flag, Peterson's map is only a surjection, and one needs to quotient by a suitable ideal on the affine side to map isomorphically onto the quantum cohomology. We provide a detailed exposition of this parabolic Peterson isomorphism in the case of the Grassmannian of m-planes in complex n-space, including an explicit recipe for doing quantum Schubert calculus in terms of the appropriate subset of non-commutative k-Schur functions. As an application, we recast Postnikov's affine approach to the quantum cohomology of the Grassmannian as a consequence of parabolic Peterson by showing that the affine nilTemperley-Lieb algebra arises naturally when forming the requisite quotient of the homology of the affine Grassmannian.

Polyhedra and parameter spaces for matroids over valuation rings
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this paper we address two of the major foundational questions in the theory of matroids over rings. First, we provide a cryptomorphic axiomatisation, by introducing an analogue of the base polytope for matroids. Second, we describe a parameter space for matroids over a valuation ring, which turns out to be a tropical version of the Bott-Samelson varieties for the full flag variety. Thus a matroid over a valuation ring is a sequence of flags of tropical linear spaces a.k.a. valuated matroids.

Schubert puzzles and integrability I: invariant trilinear forms
Published • View Publication • BIB
The puzzle rules for computing Schubert calculus on $d$-step flag manifolds, proven in [Knutson Tao 2003] for $1$-step, in [Buch Kresch Purbhoo Tamvakis 2016] for $2$-step, and conjectured in [Coskun Vakil 2009] for $3$-step, lead to vector configurations (one vector for each puzzle edge label) that we recognize as the weights of some minuscule representations. The $R$-matrices of those representations (which, for $2$-step flag manifolds, involve triality of $D_4$) degenerate to give us puzzle formulae for two previously unsolved Schubert calculus problems: $K_T(2$-step flag manifolds$)$ and $K(3$-step flag manifolds$)$. The $K(3$-step flag manifolds$)$ formula, which involves 151 new puzzle pieces, implies Buch's correction to the first author's 1999 conjecture for $H^*(3$-step flag manifolds$)$.

On Validity of Reed Conjecture for {P_5, Flag^C}-free graphs
Here we prove that Reed Conjecture is valid for {P5, Flag_Complement}-free graphs where FlagComplement is the complement of the Flag graph. Some of the known results follow as corollaries to our result. Reed conjecture is still open in general.

Fixed-point-free involutions and Schur P-positivity
Published in J. Combin. 11 (2020), no. 1, 65-110 • View Publication • BIB
The orbits of the symplectic group acting on the type A flag variety are indexed by the fixed-point-free involutions in a finite symmetric group. The cohomology classes of the closures of these orbits have polynomial representatives $\hat{\mathfrak{S}}^{\tt{FPF}}_z$ akin to Schubert polynomials. We show that the fixed-point-free involution Stanley symmetric functions $\hat{F}^{\tt{FPF}}_z$, which are stable limits of the polynomials $\hat{\mathfrak{S}}^{\tt{FPF}}_z$, are Schur $P$-positive. To do so, we construct an analogue of the Lascoux-Schützenberger tree, an algebraic recurrence that computes Schubert polynomials. As a byproduct of our proof, we obtain a Pfaffian formula of geometric interest for $\hat{\mathfrak{S}}^{\tt{FPF}}_z$ when $z$ is a fixed-point-free version of a Grassmannian permutation. We also classify the fixed-point-free involution Stanley symmetric functions that are single Schur $P$-functions, and show that the decomposition of $\hat{F}^{\tt{FPF}}_z$ into Schur $P$-functions is unitriangular with respect to dominance order on strict partitions. These results and proofs mirror previous work by the authors related to the orthogonal group action on the type A flag variety.

The ideal of maximal flags of a poset
We study algebraic and homological properties of facet ideals of order complexes of posets which we call ideals of maximal flags of posets or simply flag ideals. We characterize the unmixed and Cohen-Macaulay flag ideals of graded posets. We also give structural results for the multigraded Betti numbers of flag ideals of such posets. The structural results on multigraded Betti numbers of flag ideals are used to characterize the class of flag ideals with linear resolutions.

Strong Forms of Stability from Flag Algebra Calculations
Published • View Publication • BIB
Given a hereditary family $\mathcal{G}$ of admissible graphs and a function $λ(G)$ that linearly depends on the statistics of order-$κ$ subgraphs in a graph $G$, we consider the extremal problem of determining $λ(n,\mathcal{G})$, the maximum of $λ(G)$ over all admissible graphs $G$ of order $n$. We call the problem perfectly $B$-stable for a graph $B$ if there is a constant $C$ such that every admissible graph $G$ of order $n\ge C$ can be made into a blow-up of $B$ by changing at most $C(λ(n,\mathcal{G})-λ(G)){n\choose2}$ adjacencies. As special cases, this property describes all almost extremal graphs of order $n$ within $o(n^2)$ edges and shows that every extremal graph of order $n\ge n_0$ is a blow-up of $B$. We develop general methods for establishing stability-type results from flag algebra computations and apply them to concrete examples. In fact, one of our sufficient conditions for perfect stability is stated in a way that allows automatic verification by a computer. This gives a unifying way to obtain computer-assisted proofs of many new results.

Schubert polynomials, theta and eta polynomials, and Weyl group invariants
Published • View Publication • BIB
We examine the relationship between the (double) Schubert polynomials of Billey-Haiman and Ikeda-Mihalcea-Naruse and the (double) theta and eta polynomials of Buch-Kresch-Tamvakis and Wilson from the perspective of Weyl group invariants. We obtain generators for the kernel of the natural map from the corresponding ring of Schubert polynomials to the (equivariant) cohomology ring of symplectic and orthogonal flag manifolds.

Random Flag Complexes and Asymptotic Syzygies

We use the probabilistic method to construct examples of conjectured phenomenon about asymptotic syzygies. In particular, we use the Stanley-Reisner ideals of random flag complexes to construct new examples of Ein and Lazarsfeld's nonvanishing for asymptotic syzygies and of Ein, Erman, and Lazarsfeld's conjectural on the asymptotic normal distribution of Betti numbers.

Non-flat regular polytopes and restrictions on chiral polytopes
Published • View Publication • BIB
An abstract polytope is \emph{flat} if every facet is incident on every vertex. In this paper, we prove that no chiral polytope has flat finite regular facets and finite regular vertex-figures. We then determine the three smallest non-flat regular polytopes in each rank, and use this to show that for $n \geq 8$, a chiral $n$-polytope has at least $48(n-2)(n-2)!$ flags.

Enumerating the symplectic Dellac configurations
Fang and Fourier defined the symplectic Dellac configurations in order to parametrize the torus fixed points of the symplectic degenerated flag varieties, and conjectured that their numbers are the elements of a sequence of integers (1, 2, 10, 98, 1594, ...) which appears in the study by Randrianarivony and Zeng of the median Euler numbers. In this paper, we prove the conjecture by considering a combinatorial interpretation of these integers in terms of the surjective pistols (which form a well-known combinatorial model of the Genocchi numbers), and constructing an appropriate surjection from the symplectic Dellac configurations to the surjective pistols.
A conjectural Peterson isomorphism in K-theory
Published • View Publication • BIB
We state a precise conjectural isomorphism between localizations of the equivariant quantum K-theory ring of a flag variety and the equivariant K-homology ring of the affine Grassmannian, in particular relating their Schubert bases and structure constants. This generalizes Peterson's isomorphism in (co)homology. We prove a formula for the Pontryagin structure constants in the K-homology ring, and we use it to check our conjecture in few situations.
