The liberation set in the inverse eigenvalue problem of a graph
Published • View Publication • BIB
The inverse eigenvalue problem of a graph $G$ is the problem of characterizing all lists of eigenvalues of real symmetric matrices whose off-diagonal pattern is prescribed by the adjacencies of $G$. The strong spectral property is a powerful tool in this problem, which identifies matrices whose entries can be perturbed while controlling the pattern and preserving the eigenvalues. The Matrix Liberation Lemma introduced by Barrett et al.~in 2020 advances the notion to a more general setting. In this paper we revisit the Matrix Liberation Lemma and prove an equivalent statement, that reduces some of the technical difficulties in applying the result. We test our method on matrices of the form $M=A \oplus B$ and show how this new approach supplements the results that can be obtained from the strong spectral property only. While extending this notion to the direct sums of graphs, we discover a surprising connection with the zero forcing game on Cartesian products of graphs. Throughout the paper we apply our results to resolve a selection of open cases for the inverse eigenvalue problem of a graph on six vertices.

Adjacency matrices over a finite prime field and their direct sum decompositions
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this paper, we discuss the adjacency matrices of finite undirected simple graphs over a finite prime field $\mathbb{F}_p$. We apply symmetric (row and column) elementary transformations to the adjacency matrix over $\mathbb{F}_p$ in order to get a direct sum decomposition by other adjacency matrices. In this paper, we give a complete description of the direct sum decomposition of the adjacency matrix of any graph over $\mathbb{F}_p$ for any odd prime $p$. Our key tool is quadratic residues of $\mathbb{F}_p$.

Representability of the Direct Sum of $q$-Matroids
Published • View Publication • BIB
While there are many parallels between matroid theory and $q$-matroid theory, most notably on the level of cryptomorphisms, there are substantial differences when it comes to the direct sum. The direct sum of $q$-matroids has been introduced in the literature only recently. In this short note we show that the direct sum of representable $q$-matroids may not be representable. It remains an open question whether representability of the direct sum can be characterized by the given $q$-matroids.

Linear isometries on Weighted Coordinates Poset Block Space
Given $[n]=\{1,2,\ldots,n\}$, a poset order $\preceq$ on $[n]$, a label map $π: [n] \rightarrow \mathbb{N}$ defined by $π(i)=k_i$ with $\sum_{i=1}^{n}π(i) = N$, and a weight function $w$ on $\mathbb{F}_{q}$, let $\mathbb{F}_{q}^N$ be the vector space of $N$-tuples over the field $\mathbb{F}_{q}$ equipped with $(P,w,π)$-metric where $ \mathbb{F}_q^N $ is the direct sum of spaces $ \mathbb{F}_{q}^{k_1}, \mathbb{F}_{q}^{k_2}, \ldots, \mathbb{F}_{q}^{k_n} $. In this paper, we determine the groups of linear isometries of $(P,w,π)$-metric spaces in terms of a semi-direct product, which turns out to be similar to the case of poset (block) metric spaces. In particular, we re-obtain the group of linear isometries of the $(P,w)$-mertic spaces and $(P,π)$-mertic spaces.

Weak Bruhat interval modules for genomic Schur functions
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $λ$ be a partition of a positive integer $n$. The genomic Schur function $U_λ$ was introduced by Pechenik--Yong in the context of the $K$-theory of Grassmannians. Recently, Pechenik provided a positive combinatorial formula for the fundamental quasisymmetric expansion of $U_λ$ in terms of increasing gapless tableaux. In this paper, for each $1 \le m \le n$, we construct an $H_m(0)$-module $\mathbf{G}_{λ;m}$ whose image under the quasisymmetric characteristic is the $m$th degree homogeneous component of $U_λ$ by defining an $H_m(0)$-action on increasing gapless tableaux. We provide a method to assign a permutation to each increasing gapless tableau, and use this assignment to decompose $\mathbf{G}_{λ;m}$ into a direct sum of weak Bruhat interval modules. Furthermore, we determine the projective cover of each summand of the direct sum decomposition.

A Connection Behind the Terwilliger Algebras of $H(D,2)$ and $\frac{1}{2} H(D,2)$
Published • View Publication • BIB
The universal enveloping algebra $U(\mathfrak{sl}_2)$ of $\mathfrak{sl}_2$ is a unital associative algebra over $\mathbb C$ generated by $E,F,H$ subject to the relations \begin{align*} [H,E]=2E, \qquad [H,F]=-2F, \qquad [E,F]=H. \end{align*} The distinguished central element $$ Λ=EF+FE+\frac{H^2}{2} $$ is called the Casimir element of $U(\mathfrak{sl}_2)$. The universal Hahn algebra $\mathcal H$ is a unital associative algebra over $\mathbb C$ with generators $A,B,C$ and the relations assert that $[A,B]=C$ and each of \begin{align*} α=[C,A]+2A^2+B, \qquad β=[B,C]+4BA+2C \end{align*} is central in $\mathcal H$. The distinguished central element $$ Ω=4ABA+B^2-C^2-2βA+2(1-α)B $$ is called the Casimir element of $\mathcal H$. By investigating the relationship between the Terwilliger algebras of the hypercube and its halved graph, we discover the algebra homomorphism $\natural:\mathcal H\rightarrow U(\mathfrak{sl}_2)$ that sends \begin{eqnarray*} A &\mapsto & \frac{H}{4}, \\ B & \mapsto & \frac{E^2+F^2+Λ-1}{4}-\frac{H^2}{8}, \\ C & \mapsto & \frac{E^2-F^2}{4}. \end{eqnarray*} We determine the image of $\natural$ and show that the kernel of $\natural$ is the two-sided ideal of $\mathcal H$ generated by $β$ and $16 Ω-24 α+3$. By pulling back via $\natural$ each $U(\mathfrak{sl}_2)$-module can be regarded as an $\mathcal H$-module. For each integer $n\geq 0$ there exists a unique $(n+1)$-dimensional irreducible $U(\mathfrak{sl}_2)$-module $L_n$ up to isomorphism. We show that the $\mathcal H$-module $L_n$ ($n\geq 1$) is a direct sum of two non-isomorphic irreducible $\mathcal H$-modules.

Weighted Coordinates Poset Block Codes
Published • View Publication • BIB
Given $[n]=\{1,2,\ldots,n\}$, a partial order $\preceq$ on $[n]$, a label map $π: [n] \rightarrow \mathbb{N}$ defined by $π(i) = k_i$ with $\sum_{i=1}^{n}π(i) = N$, the direct sum $ \mathbb{F}_{q}^{k_1} \oplus \mathbb{F}_{q}^{k_2}\oplus \ldots \oplus \mathbb{F}_{q}^{k_n} $ of $ \mathbb{F}_q^N $, and a weight function $w$ on $ \mathbb{F}_q $, we define a poset block metric $d_{(P,w,π)}$ on $\mathbb{F}_{q}^{N}$ based on the poset $P=([n],\preceq)$. The metric $d_{(P,w,π)}$ is said to be weighted coordinates poset block metric ($(P,w,π)$-metric). It extends the weighted coordinates poset metric ($(P,w)$-metric) introduced by L. Panek and J. A. Pinheiro and generalizes the poset block metric ($(P,π)$-metric) introduced by M. M. S. Alves et al. We determine the complete weight distribution of a $(P,w,π)$-space, thereby obtaining it for $(P,w)$-space, $(P,π)$-space, $π$-space, and $P$-space as special cases. We obtain the Singleton bound for $(P,w,π)$-codes and for $(P,w)$-codes as well. In particular, we re-obtain the Singleton bound for any code with respect to $(P,π)$-metric and $P$-metric. Moreover, packing radius and Singleton bound for NRT block codes are found.

Extremal tensor products of Demazure crystals
Published • View Publication • BIB
Demazure crystals are subcrystals of highest weight irreducible $\mathfrak{g}$-crystals. In this article, we study tensor products of a larger class of subcrystals, called extremal, and give a local characterization for exactly when the tensor product of Demazure crystals is extremal. We then show that tensor products of Demazure crystals decompose into direct sums of Demazure crystals if and only if the tensor product is extremal, thus providing a sufficient and necessary local criterion for when the tensor product of Demazure crystals is itself Demazure. As an application, we show that the primary component in the tensor square of any Demazure crystal is always Demazure.

Siblings of Direct Sums of Chains
Published • View Publication • BIB
We prove that a countable direct sum of chains has either one, countably many or else continuum many isomorphism classes of siblings. This proves Thomassé's conjecture for such structures. Further, we show that a direct sum of chains of any cardinality has one or infinitely many siblings, up to isomorphism.
New MRD codes from linear cutting blocking sets
Published • View Publication • BIB
Minimal rank-metric codes or, equivalently, linear cutting blocking sets are characterized in terms of the second generalized rank weight, via their connection with evasiveness properties of the associated $q$-system. Using this result, we provide the first construction of a family of $\mathbb{F}_{q^m}$-linear MRD codes of length $2m$ that are not obtained as a direct sum of two smaller MRD codes. In addition, such a family has better parameters, since its codes possess generalized rank weights strictly larger than those of the previously known MRD codes. This shows that not all the MRD codes have the same generalized rank weights, in contrast to what happens in the Hamming metric setting.

The partial Temperley-Lieb algebra and its representations
Published • View Publication • BIB
We give a combinatorial description of a new diagram algebra, the partial Temperley--Lieb algebra, arising as the generic centralizer algebra $\mathrm{End}_{\mathbf{U}_q(\mathfrak{gl}_2)}(V^{\otimes k})$, where $V = V(0) \oplus V(1)$ is the direct sum of the trivial and natural module for the quantized enveloping algebra $\mathbf{U}_q(\mathfrak{gl}_2)$. It is a proper subalgebra of the Motzkin algebra (the $\mathbf{U}_q(\mathfrak{sl}_2)$-centralizer) of Benkart and Halverson. We prove a version of Schur--Weyl duality for the new algebras, and describe their generic representation theory.

Tridiagonal pairs, alternating elements, and distance-regular graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
The positive part $U^+_q$ of $U_q(\hat{\mathfrak{sl}}_2)$ has a presentation with two generators $W_0$, $W_1$ and two relations called the $q$-Serre relations. The algebra $U^+_q$ contains some elements, said to be alternating. There are four kinds of alternating elements, denoted $\lbrace W_{-k}\rbrace_{k\in \mathbb N}$, $\lbrace W_{k+1}\rbrace_{k\in \mathbb N}$, $\lbrace G_{k+1}\rbrace_{k\in \mathbb N}$, $\lbrace {\tilde G}_{k+1}\rbrace_{k \in \mathbb N}$. The alternating elements of each kind mutually commute. A tridiagonal pair is an ordered pair of diagonalizable linear maps $A, A^*$ on a nonzero, finite-dimensional vector space $V$, that each act in a (block) tridiagonal fashion on the eigenspaces of the other one. Let $A$, $A^*$ denote a tridiagonal pair on $V$. Associated with this pair are six well-known direct sum decompositions of $V$; these are the eigenspace decompositions of $A$ and $A^*$, along with four decompositions of $V$ that are often called split. In our main results, we assume that $A$, $A^*$ has $q$-Serre type. Under this assumption $A$, $A^*$ satisfy the $q$-Serre relations, and $V$ becomes an irreducible $U^+_q$-module on which $W_0=A$ and $W_1=A^*$. We describe how the alternating elements of $U^+_q$ act on the above six decompositions of $V$. We show that for each decomposition, every alternating element acts in either a (block) diagonal, (block) upper bidiagonal, (block) lower bidiagonal, or (block) tridiagonal fashion. We investigate two special cases in detail. In the first case the eigenspaces of $A$ and $A^*$ all have dimension one. In the second case $A$ and $A^*$ are obtained by adjusting the adjacency matrix and a dual adjacency matrix of a distance-regular graph that has classical parameters and is formally self-dual.

The Terwilliger algebra of the doubled Odd graph
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $2.O_{m+1}$ denote the doubled Odd graph with vertex set $X$ on a set of cardinality $2m+1$, where $m\geq 1$. Fix a vertex $x_0\in X$. Let $\mathcal{A}:=\mathcal{A}(x_0)$ denote the centralizer algebra of the stabilizer of $x_0$ in the automorphism group of $2.O_{m+1}$, and $T:=T(x_0)$ the Terwilliger algebra of $2.O_{m+1}$. In this paper, we first give a basis of $\mathcal{A}$ by considering the action of the stabilizer of $x_0$ on $X\times X$ and determine the dimension of $\mathcal{A}$. Furthermore, we give three subalgebras of $\mathcal{A}$ such that their direct sum is $\mathcal{A}$ as vector space. Next, for $m\geq 3$ we find all isomorphism classes of irreducible $T$-modules to display the decomposition of $T$ in a block-diagonalization form. Finally, we show that the two algebras $\mathcal{A}$ and $T$ coincide. This result tells us that the graph $2.O_{m+1}$ may be the first example of bipartite but not $Q$-polynomial distance-transitive graph for which the corresponding centralizer algebra and Terwilliger algebra are equal.

Orbit harmonics for the union of two orbits
Garsia and Procesi, in their study of Springer's representation, proved that the cohomology ring of a Springer fiber is isomorphic to the associated graded ring of the coordinate ring of the $S_n$ orbit of a single point in $\mathbb{C}^n$. This construction was an essential tool in their analysis of the Springer representation, and variations of it have reappeared recently in several other combinatorial and geometric contexts under the name orbit harmonics. In this article, we analyze the orbit harmonics of a union of two $S_n$ orbits. We prove that when the coordinate sums of the two orbits are different, the corresponding graded $S_n$ representation is a direct sum of two Springer representations, one of which is shifted in degree by 1.

A basis for the Diagonal Harmonic Alternants
It will be shown here that there are differential operators $E,F$ and $H=[E,F]$ for each $n\ge 1$, acting on Diagonal Harmonics, yielding that $DH_n$ is a representation of $sl[2]$ (see [3] Chapter 3). Our main effort here is to use $sl[2]$ theory to predict a basis for the Diagonal Harmonic Alternants, $DHA_n$. It can be shown that the irreducible representations $sl[2]$ are all of the form $P,EP,E^2P,\cdots,E^kP$, with $FP=0$ and $E^{k+1}P=0$. The polynomial $P$ is known to be called a "String Starter". From $sl[2]$ theory it follows that $DHA_n$ is a direct sum of strings. Our main result so far is a formula for the number of string starters. A recent paper by Carlsson and Oblomkov (see [2]) constructs a basis for the space of Diagonal Coinvariants by Algebraic Geometrical tools. It would be interesting to see if any our results can be derived from theirs.

On the symmetric group action on rigid disks on a strip
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this paper we decompose the rational homology of the ordered configuration space of $p$ open unit-diameter disks on the infinite strip of width $2$ as a direct sum of induced $S_{n}$-representations. Alpert proved that the $k^{\text{th}}$-integral homology of the ordered configuration space of $n$ open unit-diameter disks on the infinite strip of width $2$ is an FI$_{k+1}$-module by studying certain operations on homology called "high-insertion maps." The integral homology groups $H_{k}(\text{cell}(n,2))$ are free abelian, and Alpert computed a basis for $H_{k}(\text{cell}(n,2))$ as an abelian group. In this paper, we study the rational homology groups as $S_{n}$-representations. We find a new basis for $H_{k}(\text{cell}(n,2);\mathbb{Q}),$ and use this, along with results of Ramos, to give an explicit description of $H_{k}(\text{cell}(n,2);\mathbb{Q})$ as a direct sum of induced $S_{n}$-representations arising from free FI$_{*}$-modules. We use this decomposition to calculate the dimension of the rational homology of the unordered configuration space of $p$ open unit-diameter disks on the infinite strip of width $2$.
The multiplicity of a singularity in a vexillary Schubert variety
Published • View Publication • BIB
In a classical-type flag variety, we consider a Schubert variety associated to a vexillary (signed) permutation, and establish a combinatorial formula for the Hilbert-Samuel multiplicity of a point on such a Schubert variety. The formula is expressed in terms of excited Young diagrams, and extends results for Grassmannians due to Krattenthaler, Lakshmibai-Raghavan-Sankaran, and for the maximal isotropic (symplectic and orthogonal) Grassmannians to Ghorpade-Raghavan, Raghavan-Upadhyay, Kreiman, and Ikeda-Naruse. We also provide a new proof of a theorem of Li-Yong in the type A vexillary case. The main ingredient is an isomorphism between certain neighborhoods of fixed points, known as Kazhdan-Lusztig varieties, which, in turn, relies on a direct sum embedding previously used by Anderson-Fulton to relate vexillary loci to Grassmannian loci.

Coproducts in Categories of q-Matroids
q-Matroids form the q-analogue of classical matroids. In this paper we introduce various types of maps between q-matroids. These maps are not necessarily linear, but they map subspaces to subspaces and respect the q-matroid structure in certain ways. The various types of maps give rise to different categories of q-matroids. We show that only one of these categories possesses a coproduct. This is the category where the morphisms are linear weak maps, that is, the rank of the image of any subspace is not larger than the rank of the subspace itself. The coproduct in this category is the very recently introduced direct sum of q-matroids.

Lattice-free simplices with lattice width $2d - o(d)$
Published • View Publication • BIB
The Flatness theorem states that the maximum lattice width ${\rm Flt}(d)$ of a $d$-dimensional lattice-free convex set is finite. It is the key ingredient for Lenstra's algorithm for integer programming in fixed dimension, and much work has been done to obtain bounds on ${\rm Flt}(d)$. While most results have been concerned with upper bounds, only few techniques are known to obtain lower bounds. In fact, the previously best known lower bound ${\rm Flt}(d) \ge 1.138d$ arises from direct sums of a $3$-dimensional lattice-free simplex. In this work, we establish the lower bound ${\rm Flt}(d) \ge 2d - O(\sqrt{d})$, attained by a family of lattice-free simplices. Our construction is based on a differential equation that naturally appears in this context. Additionally, we provide the first local maximizers of the lattice width of $4$- and $5$-dimensional lattice-free convex bodies.

The smallest class of binary matroids closed under direct sums and complements
Published • View Publication • BIB
The class of cographs or complement-reducible graphs is the class of graphs that can be generated from $K_1$ using the operations of disjoint union and complementation. By analogy, this paper introduces the class of binary comatroids as the class of matroids that can be generated from the empty matroid using the operations of direct sum and taking complements inside of binary projective space. We show that a proper flat of a binary comatroid is a binary comatroid. Our main result identifies those binary non-comatroids for which every proper flat is a binary comatroid. The paper also proves the corresponding results for ternary matroids.
