Type $A$ DAHA and Doubly Periodic Tableaux
Published • View Publication • BIB
Analogously to the construction of Suzuki and Vazirani, we construct representations of the $GL_m$-type Double Affine Hecke Algebra at roots of unity. These representations are graded and the weight spaces for the $X$-variables are parametrized by the combinatorial objects we call doubly periodic tableaux. We show that our representations exhaust all graded $X$-semisimple representations, and the direct sum of all our representations is faithful. Analogously to the construction of Jordan and Vazirani of rectangular DAHA representations, we show that our representations can be interpreted in terms of ribbon fusion categories associated to $U_q(\mathfrak{gl}_N)$ at roots of unity. Combining the ribbon structure with faithfulness we deduce a conjecture of Morton and Samuelson about realization of DAHA as a skein algebra of the torus with base string modulo certain local relations.

The direct sum of $q$-matroids
Published • View Publication • BIB
For classical matroids, the direct sum is one of the most straightforward methods to make a new matroid out of existing ones. This paper defines a direct sum for $q$-matroids, the $q$-analogue of matroids. This is a lot less straightforward than in the classical case, as we will try to convince the reader. With the use of submodular functions and the $q$-analogue of matroid union we come to a definition of the direct sum of $q$-matroids. As a motivation for this definition, we show it has some desirable properties.

The Terwilliger algebra of the halved cube
Let $D\geq 3$ denote an integer. For any $x\in \mathbb F_2^D$ let $w(x)$ denote the Hamming weight of $x$. Let $X$ denote the subspace of $\mathbb F_2^D$ consisting of all $x\in \mathbb F_2^D$ with even $w(x)$. The $D$-dimensional halved cube $\frac{1}{2}H(D,2)$ is a finite simple connected graph with vertex set $X$ and $x,y\in X$ are adjacent if and only if $w(x-y)=2$. Fix a vertex $x\in X$. The Terwilliger algebra $\mathcal T=\mathcal T(x)$ of $\frac{1}{2}H(D,2)$ with respect to $x$ is the subalgebra of ${\rm Mat}_X(\mathbb C)$ generated by the adjacency matrix $A$ and the dual adjacency matrix $A^*=A^*(x)$ where $A^*$ is a diagonal matrix with $$ A^*_{yy}=D-2w(x-y) \qquad \hbox{for all $y\in X$}. $$ In this paper we decompose the standard $\mathcal T$-module into a direct sum of irreducible $\mathcal T$-modules.

Special cases and equivalent forms of Katznelson's problem on recurrence
Published • View Publication • BIB
We make three observations regarding a question popularized by Katznelson: is every subset of $\mathbb Z$ which is a set of Bohr recurrence is also a set of topological recurrence? (i) If $G$ is a countable abelian group and $E\subset G$ is an $I_0$ set, then every subset of $E-E$ which is a set of Bohr recurrence is also a set of topological recurrence. In particular every subset of $\{2^n-2^m : n,m\in \mathbb N\}$ which is a set of Bohr recurrence is a set of topological recurrence. (ii) Let $\mathbb Z^ω$ be the direct sum of countably many copies of $\mathbb Z$ with standard basis $E$. If every subset of $(E-E)-(E-E)$ which is a set of Bohr recurrence is also a set of topological recurrence, then every subset of every countable abelian group which is a set of Bohr recurrence is also a set of topological recurrence. (iii) Fix a prime $p$ and let $\mathbb F_p^ω$ be the direct sum of countably many copies of $\mathbb Z/p\mathbb Z$ with basis $(\mathbf e_i)_{i\in \mathbb N}$. If for every $p$-uniform hypergraph with vertex set $\mathbb N$ and edge set $\mathcal F$ having infinite chromatic number, the Cayley graph on $\mathbb F_p^ω$ determined by $\{\sum_{i\in F}\mathbf e_i:F\in \mathcal F\}$ has infinite chromatic number, then every subset of $\mathbb F_p^ω$ which is a set of Bohr recurrence is a set of topological recurrence.

The Clebsch-Gordan Rule for $U(\mathfrak{sl}_2)$, the Krawtchouk Algebras and the Hamming Graphs
Published in SIGMA 19 (2023), 017, 19 pages • View Publication • BIB
Let $D\geq 1$ and $q\geq 3$ be two integers. Let $H(D)=H(D,q)$ denote the $D$-dimensional Hamming graph over a $q$-element set. Let ${\mathcal T}(D)$ denote the Terwilliger algebra of $H(D)$. Let $V(D)$ denote the standard ${\mathcal T}(D)$-module. Let $ω$ denote a complex scalar. We consider a unital associative algebra $\mathfrak K_ω$ defined by generators and relations. The generators are $A$ and $B$. The relations are $A^2 B-2 ABA +B A^2 =B+ωA$, $B^2A-2 BAB+AB^2=A+ωB$. The algebra $\mathfrak K_ω$ is the case of the Askey-Wilson algebras corresponding to the Krawtchouk polynomials. The algebra $\mathfrak K_ω$ is isomorphic to ${\rm U}(\mathfrak{sl}_2)$ when $ω^2\not=1$. We view $V(D)$ as a $\mathfrak{K}_{1-\frac{2}{q}}$-module. We apply the Clebsch-Gordan rule for ${\rm U}(\mathfrak{sl}_2)$ to decompose $V(D)$ into a direct sum of irreducible ${\mathcal T}(D)$-modules.

The slice rank of a direct sum
We show that the slice rank of the direct sum of two tensors is equal to the sum of their slice ranks. The upper bound is trivial, but the lower bound needs more than a one-line proof, for reasons we explain. This result generalizes the fact, shown by Tao, that the slice rank of a diagonal tensor is equal to the number of non-zero entries of that tensor.

A generalization of a theorem of Erné
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $X$ be a finite set, $Z \subseteq X$ and $y \notin X$. Marcel Erné showed in 1981, that the number of posets on $X$ containing $Z$ as an antichain equals the number of posets $R$ on $X \cup \{ y \}$ in which the points of $Z \cup \{ y \}$ are exactly the maximal points of $R$. We prove the following generalization: For every poset $Q$ with carrier $Z$, the number of posets on $X$ containing $Q$ as an induced sub-poset equals the number of posets $R$ on $X \cup \{ y \}$ which contain $Q^d + A_y$ as an induced sub-poset and in which the maximal points of $Q^d + A_y$ are exactly the maximal points of $R$. Here, $Q^d$ is the dual of $Q$, $A_y$ is the singleton-poset on $y$, and $Q^d + A_y$ denotes the direct sum of $Q^d$ and $A_y$.

An Inverse Theorem for Certain Directional Gowers Uniformity Norms
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $G$ be a finite-dimensional vector space over a prime field $\mathbb{F}_p$ with some subspaces $H_1, \dots, H_k$. Let $f \colon G \to \mathbb{C}$ be a function. Generalizing the notion of Gowers uniformity norms, Austin introduced directional Gowers uniformity norms of $f$ over $(H_1, \dots, H_k)$ as \[\|f\|_{\mathsf{U}(H_1, \dots, H_k)}^{2^k} = \mathbb{E}_{x \in G,h_1 \in H_1, \dots, h_k \in H_k} \partial_{h_1} \dots \partial_{h_k} f(x)\] where $\partial_u f(x) \colon= f(x + u) \overline{f(x)}$ is the discrete multiplicative derivative. Suppose that $G$ is a direct sum of subspaces $G = U_1 \oplus U_2 \oplus \dots \oplus U_k$. In this paper we prove the inverse theorem for the norm \[\|\cdot\|_{\mathsf{U}(U_1, \dots, U_k, \smash[b]{\underbrace{\scriptstyle G, \dots, G}_{\scriptscriptstyle \ell}})},\] which is the simplest interesting unknown case of the inverse problem for the directional Gowers uniformity norms. Namely, writing $\|\cdot\|_{\mathsf{U}}$ for the norm above, we show that if $f \colon G \to \mathbb{C}$ is a function bounded by 1 in magnitude and obeying $\|f\|_{\mathsf{U}} \geq c$, provided $\ell < p$, one can find a polynomial $α\colon G \to \mathbb{F}_p$ of degree at most $k + \ell - 1$ and functions $g_i \colon \oplus_{j \in [k] \setminus \{i\}} G_j \to \{z \in \mathbb{C} \colon |z| \leq 1\}$ for $i \in [k]$ such that \[\Big|\mathbb{E}_{x \in G} f(x) ω^{α(x)} \prod_{i \in [k]} g_i(x_1, \dots, x_{i-1}, x_{i+1}, \dots, x_k)\Big| \geq \Big(\exp^{(O_{p,k,\ell}(1))}(O_{p,k,\ell}(c^{-1}))\Big)^{-1}.\] The proof relies on an approximation theorem for the cuboid-counting function that is proved using the inverse theorem for Freiman multi-homomorphisms.
Bakry-Émery curvature on graphs as an eigenvalue problem
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this paper, we reformulate the Bakry-Émery curvature on a weighted graph in terms of the smallest eigenvalue of a rank one perturbation of the so-called curvature matrix using Schur complement. This new viewpoint allows us to show various curvature function properties in a very conceptual way. We show that the curvature, as a function of the dimension parameter, is analytic, strictly monotone increasing and strictly concave until a certain threshold after which the function is constant. Furthermore, we derive the curvature of the Cartesian product using the crucial observation that the curvature matrix of the product is the direct sum of each component. Our approach of the curvature functions of graphs can be employed to establish analogous results for the curvature functions of weighted Riemannian manifolds. Moreover, as an application, we confirm a conjecture (in a general weighted case) of the fact that the curvature does not decrease under certain graph modifications.

Gelfand $W$-graphs for classical Weyl groups
Published in J. Algebra 609 (2022), 292-336 • View Publication • BIB
A Gelfand model for an algebra is a module given by a direct sum of irreducible submodules, with every isomorphism class of irreducible modules represented exactly once. We introduce the notion of a perfect model for a finite Coxeter group, which is a certain set of discrete data (involving Rains and Vazirani's concept of a perfect involution) that parametrizes a Gelfand model for the associated Iwahori-Hecke algebra. We describe perfect models for all classical Weyl groups, excluding type D in even rank. The representations attached to these models simultaneously generalize constructions of Adin, Postnikov, and Roichman (from type A to other classical types) and of Araujo and Bratten (from group algebras to Iwahori-Hecke algebras). We show that each Gelfand model derived from a perfect model has a canonical basis that gives rise to a pair of related $W$-graphs, which we call Gelfand $W$-graphs. For types BC and D, we prove that these $W$-graphs are dual to each other, a phenomenon which does not occur in type A.

Poincaré Series of Divisors on Graphs and Chains of Loops
We study Poincaré series associated to a finite collection of divisors on i. a finite graph and ii. a certain family of metric graphs called chain of loops. Our main results are proofs of rationality of the Poincaré series and algorithms for computing it in both these cases. The main tools used in the proof of rationality are the following. For graphs, we study a certain homomorphism from a free Abelian group of finite rank to the direct sum of the Jacobian of the graph and the integers. For chains of loops, our main tool is an analogue of Lang's conjecture for Brill-Noether loci on a chain of loops and adapts the proof of rationality of the Poincaré series of divisors on an algebraic curve (over an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero). Our algorithms are based on a closer study of the objects involved in the proof of rationality, for instance, computing the fibres of certain homomorphisms and lattice point enumeration in rational polyhedra.

The feasible regions for consecutive patterns of pattern-avoiding permutations
Published in Discrete Mathematics, Vol. 346, No. 2, 2023 • View Publication • BIB
We study the feasible region for consecutive patterns of pattern-avoiding permutations. More precisely, given a family $\mathcal C$ of permutations avoiding a fixed set of patterns, we consider the limit of proportions of consecutive patterns on large permutations of $\mathcal C$. These limits form a region, which we call the consecutive patterns feasible region for $\mathcal C$. We determine the dimension of the consecutive patterns feasible region for all families $\mathcal C$ closed either for the direct sum or the skew sum. These families include for instance the ones avoiding a single pattern and all substitution-closed classes. We further show that these regions are always convex and we conjecture that they are always polytopes. We prove this conjecture when $\mathcal C$ is the family of $τ$-avoiding permutations, with either $τ$ of size three or $τ$ a monotone pattern. Furthermore, in these cases we give a full description of the vertices of these polytopes via cycle polytopes. Along the way, we discuss connections of this work with the problem of packing patterns in pattern-avoiding permutations and to the study of local limits for pattern-avoiding permutations.
Extra-fine sheaves and interaction decompositions
We introduce an original notion of extra-fine sheaf on a topological space, and a variant (hyper-extra-fine) for which Čech cohomology in strictly positive degree vanishes. We provide a characterization of such sheaves when the topological space is a partially ordered set (poset) equipped with the Alexandrov topology. Then we further specialize our results to some sheaves of vector spaces and injective maps, where extra-fineness is (essentially) equivalent to the decomposition of the sheaf into a direct sum of subfunctors, known as interaction decomposition, and can be expressed by a sum-intersection condition. We use these results to compute the dimension of the space of global sections when the presheaves are freely generated over a functor of sets, generalizing classical counting formulae for the number of solutions of the linearized marginal problem (Kellerer and Matúš). We finish with a comparison theorem between the Čech cohomology associated to a covering and the topos cohomology of the poset with coefficients in the presheaf, which is also the cohomology of a cosimplicial local system over the nerve of the poset. For that, we give a detailed treatment of cosimplicial local systems on simplicial sets. The appendixes present presheaves, sheaves and Čech cohomology, and their application to the marginal problem.

Intersection of a partitional and a general infinite matroid
Let $ E $ be a possibly infinite set and let $ M $ and $ N $ be matroids defined on $ E $. We say that the pair $ \{ M,N \} $ has the Intersection property if $ M $ and $ N $ share an independent set $ I $ admitting a bipartition $ I_M\sqcup I_N $ such that $ \mathsf{span}_M(I_M)\cup \mathsf{span}_N(I_N)=E $. The Matroid Intersection Conjecture of Nash-Williams says that every matroid pair has the Intersection property. The conjecture is known and easy to prove in the case when one of the matroids is uniform and it was shown by Bowler and Carmesin that the conjecture is implied by its special case where one of the matroids is a direct sum of uniform matroids, i.e., is a partitional matroid. We show that if $ M $ is an arbitrary matroid and $ N $ is the direct sum of finitely many uniform matroids, then $ \{ M, N \} $ has the Intersection property.

Eigenfunctions and minimum 1-perfect bitrades in the Hamming graph
Published • View Publication • BIB
The Hamming graph $H(n,q)$ is the graph whose vertices are the words of length $n$ over the alphabet $\{0,1,\ldots,q-1\}$, where two vertices are adjacent if they differ in exactly one coordinate. The adjacency matrix of $H(n,q)$ has $n+1$ distinct eigenvalues $n(q-1)-q\cdot i$ with corresponding eigenspaces $U_{i}(n,q)$ for $0\leq i\leq n$. In this work we study functions belonging to a direct sum $U_i(n,q)\oplus U_{i+1}(n,q)\oplus\ldots\oplus U_j(n,q)$ for $0\leq i\leq j\leq n$. We find the minimum cardinality of the support of such functions for $q=2$ and for $q=3$, $i+j>n$. In particular, we find the minimum cardinality of the support of eigenfunctions from the eigenspace $U_{i}(n,3)$ for $i>\frac{n}{2}$. Using the correspondence between $1$-perfect bitrades and eigenfunctions with eigenvalue $-1$, we find the minimum size of a $1$-perfect bitrade in the Hamming graph $H(n,3)$.

The Haemers bound of noncommutative graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
We continue the study of the quantum channel version of Shannon's zero-error capacity problem. We generalize the celebrated Haemers bound to noncommutative graphs (obtained from quantum channels). We prove basic properties of this bound, such as additivity under the direct sum and submultiplicativity under the tensor product. The Haemers bound upper bounds the Shannon capacity of noncommutative graphs, and we show that it can outperform other known upper bounds, including noncommutative analogues of the Lovász theta function (Duan-Severini-Winter, IEEE Trans. Inform. Theory, 2013 and Boreland-Todorov-Winter, arXiv, 2019).

Tilting modules arising from knot invariants
Published • View Publication • BIB
We construct tilting modules over Jacobian algebras arising from knots. To a two-bridge knot $L[a_1,\ldots,a_n]$, we associate a quiver $Q$ with potential and its Jacobian algebra $A$. We construct a family of canonical indecomposable $A$-modules $M(i)$, each supported on a different specific subquiver $Q(i)$ of $Q$. Each of the $M(i)$ is expected to parametrize the Jones polynomial of the knot. We study the direct sum $M=\oplus_iM(i)$ of these indecomposables inside the module category of $A$ as well as in the cluster category. In this paper we consider the special case where the two-bridge knot is given by two parameters $a_1,a_2$. We show that the module $M$ is rigid and $τ$-rigid, and we construct a completion of $M$ to a tilting (and $τ$-tilting) $A$-module $T$. We show that the endomorphism algebra $\operatorname{End}_AT$ of $T$ is isomorphic to $A$, and that the mapping $T\mapsto A[1]$ induces a cluster automorphism of the cluster algebra $\mathcal{A}(Q)$. This automorphism is of order two. Moreover, we give a mutation sequence that realizes the cluster automorphism. In particular, we show that the quiver $Q$ is mutation equivalent to an acyclic quiver of type $T_{p,q,r}$ (a tree with three branches). This quiver is of finite type if $(a_1,a_2)=(a_1,2), (1,a_2),$ or $(2,3)$, it is tame for $(a_1,a_2)=(2,4)$ or $(3,3)$, and wild otherwise.

On Basic Operations Related to Network Induction of Discrete Convex Functions
Published • View Publication • BIB
Discrete convex functions are used in many areas, including operations research, discrete-event systems, game theory, and economics. The objective of this paper is to investigate basic operations such as direct sum, splitting, and aggregation that are related to network induction of discrete convex functions as well as discrete convex sets. Various kinds of discrete convex functions in discrete convex analysis are considered such as integrally convex functions, L-convex functions, M-convex functions, multimodular functions, and discrete midpoint convex functions.

On the Induction of p-Cells
Published • View Publication • BIB
We study cells with respect to the $p$-canonical basis of the Hecke algebra of a crystallographic Coxeter system (see arXiv:1510.01556, arXiv:1901.02323) and their compatibility with standard parabolic subgroups. We show that after induction to the surrounding bigger Coxeter group the cell module of a right $p$-cell in a standard parabolic subgroup decomposes as a direct sum of cell modules. Along the way, we state some new positivity properties of the $p$-canonical basis.
