Coloured shuffle compatibility, Hadamard products, and ask zeta functions
Published • View Publication • BIB
We devise an explicit method for computing combinatorial formulae for Hadamard products of certain rational generating functions. The latter arise naturally when studying so-called ask zeta functions of direct sums of modules of matrices or class- and orbit-counting zeta functions of direct products of nilpotent groups. Our method relies on shuffle compatibility of coloured permutation statistics and coloured quasisymmetric functions, extending recent work of Gessel and Zhuang.
Bijections on pattern avoiding inversion sequences and related objects
Published • View Publication • BIB
The number of inversion sequences avoiding two patterns $101$ and $102$ is known to be the same as the number of permutations avoiding three patterns $2341$, $2431$, and $3241$. This sequence also counts the number of Schröder paths without triple descents, restricted bicolored Dyck paths, $(101,021)$-avoiding inversion sequences, and weighted ordered trees. We provide bijections to integrate them together by introducing $F$-paths. Moreover, we define three kinds of statistics for each of the objects and count the number of each object with respect to these statistics. We also discuss direct sums of each object.

Ternary and quaternary positroids
A positroid is an ordered matroid realizable by a real matrix with all nonnegative maximal minors. Postnikov gave a map from ordered matroids to Grassmann necklaces, for which there is a unique positroid in each fiber of the map. Here, we give forbidden minor characterizations of ternary and quaternary positroids. We show that a positroid is ternary if and only if it is near-regular, and that all ternary positroids are formed by direct sums and $2$-sums of binary positroids and positroid ordered whirls. We prove that a positroid is quaternary if and only if it is $U^2_6, U^4_6,$ and $P_6$-free. Under the map from ordered matroids to Grassmann necklaces, we fully characterize the fibers of ternary positroids, referred to as their positroid envelope classes; in particular, the envelope class of a positroid ordered whirl of rank-$r$ contains exactly four matroids.

New scattered subspaces in higher dimensions
Published • View Publication • BIB
Over the past few decades, there has been extensive research on scattered subspaces, partly because of their link to MRD codes. These subspaces can be characterized using linearized polynomials over finite fields. Within this context, scattered sequences extend the concept of scattered polynomials and can be viewed as geometric equivalents of exceptional MRD codes. Up to now, only scattered sequences of orders one and two have been developed. However, this paper presents an infinite series of exceptional scattered sequences of any order beyond two which correspond to scattered subspaces that cannot be obtained as direct sum of scattered subspaces in smaller dimensions. The paper also addresses equivalence concerns within this framework.

The common basis complex and the partial decomposition poset
Published in International Mathematics Research Notices, Volume 2024, Issue 18, September 2024, Pages 12746-12760 • View Publication • BIB
For a finite-dimensional vector space $V$, the common basis complex of $V$ is the simplicial complex whose vertices are the proper non-zero subspaces of $V$, and $σ$ is a simplex if and only if there exists a basis $B$ of $V$ that contains a basis of $S$ for all $S\in σ$. This complex was introduced by Rognes in 1992 in connection with stable buildings. In this article, we prove that the common basis complex is homotopy equivalent to the proper part of the poset of partial direct sum decompositions of $V$. Moreover, we establish this result in a more general combinatorial context, including the case of free groups, matroids, vector spaces with non-degenerate sesquilinear forms, and free modules over commutative Hermite rings, such as local rings or Dedekind domains.
On the action of the symmetric group on the free LAnKe
A LAnKe (also known as a Filippov algebra or a Lie algebra of the $n$-th kind) is a vector space equipped with a skew-symmetric $n$-linear form that satisfies the generalized Jacobi identity. Friedmann, Hanlon, Stanley and Wachs have shown that the symmetric group acts on the multilinear part of the free LAnKe on $2n-1$ generators as an irreducible representation. They announced that the multilinear component on $3n-2$ generators decomposes as a direct sum of two irreducible symmetric group representations and a proof was given recently in a subsequent paper by Friedmann, Hanlon and Wachs. In the present paper we provide a proof of the later statement. The two proofs are substantially different.

Stanley decompositions of modules of covariants
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $H$ be a complex reductive group, with finite-dimensional representations $W$ and $U$. The module of covariants for $W$ of type $U$ is the space of all $H$-equivariant polynomial maps $\varphi: W \longrightarrow U$. In this paper, we take $H$ to be one of the classical groups $\operatorname{GL}(V)$, $\operatorname{O}(V)$, or $\operatorname{Sp}(V)$, where $W$ is a direct sum of copies of $V$ and $V^*$, and $U$ is an arbitrary rational representation (with $U$ restricted to exterior powers of $V$ in the $H= \operatorname{O}(V)$ case). Our main result gives uniform Stanley decompositions of these modules of covariants, with Stanley spaces parametrized by combinatorial objects we call jellyfish. As a corollary, we write down the Hilbert series as a finite sum of rational functions, each with a combinatorial interpretation in terms of lattice paths. Notably, these results do not rely on the module being Cohen-Macaulay. We further apply our methods to invariant rings for $\operatorname{SL}(V)$ and $\operatorname{SO}(V)$. Our proofs (for $H = \operatorname{GL}(V)$ and $\operatorname{Sp}(V)$) rely on previous work by Jackson on standard monomial theory for dual reductive pairs, since classical modules of covariants can be viewed via Howe duality as Harish-Chandra modules of unitary highest weight representations of a certain real reductive group. As a first step toward extending this program to arbitrary unitary highest weight representations (including those of the exceptional groups), we establish analogous results uniformly for the Wallach representations of type ADE.

The spectra of Laplace operators on covering simplicial complexes
We give a decomposition of the Laplace operator (in matrix form) of a covering simplicial complex as a direct sum of several matrices, one of which is the Laplace operator of the base complex. It follows that the spectrum of a covering simplicial complex is a multiset union of the spectrum of the base simplicial complex and the spectra of other relevant matrices, which implies the spectral inclusion property of Horak and Jost. In the case of a $2$-fold covering, we show that the spectrum is a multiset union of the spectrum of the base complex and that of an incidence-signed simplicial complex, thereby generalizing a result of Bilu and Linial from graphs to simplicial complexes. Additionally, we show that the dimension of the cohomology of a covering complex is greater than or equal to that of the base complex. Our arguments exploit the coverings of incidence graphs of simplicial complexes and the representation theory of permutation groups.

Discovering product and coproduct Rules for Bases of ${\textsf {QSym}}_F$ through Supercharacters
In this paper, we establish product and coproduct rules for three bases of the Hopf algebra $\textsf{QSym}_F$ of quasisymmetric functions over $F$, with $F$ being either $\mathbb{C}(q,t)$ or $\mathbb{C}(q)$. These results are derived through the categorizations of $\textsf{QSym}_{\mathbb{C}}$ obtained by utilizing the normal lattice supercharacter theories. Firstly, we deal with a basis $\{\mathcal{D}_α(q,t) \mid α\in \textsf{Comp}\}$ of $\textsf{QSym}_{\mathbb{C}(q,t)}$, where $\textsf{Comp}$ denotes the set of all compositions. This basis is obtained from the direct sum of specific supercharacter function spaces and consists of superclass identifier functions. Upon appropriate specializations of $q$ and $t$, it yields notable bases of $\textsf{QSym}_{\mathbb{C}}$ and $\textsf{QSym}_{\mathbb{C}(q)}$, including enriched $q$-monomial quasisymmetric functions introduced by Grinberg and Vassilieva. Secondly, we deal with the basis $\{G_α(q) \mid α\in \textsf{Comp}\}$ of $\textsf{QSym}_{\mathbb{C}(q)}$, where $G_α(q)$ represents the quasisymmetric Hall-Littlewood function introduced by Hivert. Our product rule is new, whereas our coproduct rule turns out to be equivalent to the existing coproduct rule of Hivert. Finally, we consider a basis $\{M_α(q) \mid α\in \textsf{Comp}\}$ of $\textsf{QSym}_{\mathbb{C}(q)}$, where $M_α(q)$ is a $q$-analogue of the monomial quasisymmetric function.

Mean and variance of the longest alternating subsequence in a random separable permutation
Published • View Publication • BIB
A permutation is \it separable \rm if it can be obtained from the singleton permutation by iterating direct sums and skew sums. Equivalently, it is separable if and only it avoids the patterns 2413 and 3142. Under the uniform probability on separable permutations of $[n]$, let the random variable $A_n$ denote the length of the longest alternating subsequence. Also, let $A_n^{+,-}$ denote the length of the longest alternating subsequence that begins with an ascent and ends with a descent, and define $A_n^{-,+}, A_n^{+,+}, A_n^{-,-}$ similarly. By symmetry, the first two and the last two of these latter four random variables are equi-distributed. We prove that the expected value of any of these five random variables behaves asymptotically as $(2-\sqrt2)n\approx0.5858\thinspace n$. We also prove that the variance of any of the four random variables $A_n^{\pm,\pm}$ behaves asymptotically as $\frac{16-11\sqrt2}2n\approx0.2218\thinspace n$.
Direct sum graph of the subspaces of a finite dimensional vector space over finite fields
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this paper, we introduce a new graph structure, called the $direct~ sum ~graph$ on a finite dimensional vector space. We investigate the connectivity, diameter and the completeness of $Γ_{U\oplus W}(\mathbb{V})$. Further, we find its domination number and independence number. We also determine the degree of each vertex in case the base field is finite and show that the graph $Γ_{U\oplus W}(\mathbb{V})$ is not Eulerian. We also show that under some mild conditions the graph $Γ_{U\oplus W}(\mathbb{V})$ is triangulated. We determine the clique number of $Γ_{U\oplus W}(\mathbb{V})$ for some particular cases. Finally, we find the size, girth, edge-connectivity and the chromatic number of $Γ_{U\oplus W}(\mathbb{V})$.

Poset modules of the $0$-Hecke algebras and related quasisymmetric power sum expansions
Published in European Journal of Combinatorics (2024) • View Publication • BIB
Duchamp--Hivert--Thibon introduced the construction of a right $H_n(0)$-module, denoted as $M_P$, for any partial order $P$ on the set $[n]$. This module is defined by specifying a suitable action of $H_n(0)$ on the set of linear extensions of $P$. In this paper, we refer to this module as the poset module associated with $P$. Firstly, we show that $\bigoplus_{n \ge 0} G_0(\mathscr{P}(n))$ has a Hopf algebra structure that is isomorphic to the Hopf algebra of quasisymmetric functions, where $\mathscr{P}(n)$ is the full subcategory of $\textbf{mod-}H_n(0)$ whose objects are direct sums of finitely many isomorphic copies of poset modules and $G_0(\mathscr{P}(n))$ is the Grothendieck group of $\mathscr{P}(n)$. We also demonstrate how (anti-)automorphism twists interact with these modules, the induction product and restrictions. Secondly, we investigate the (type 1) quasisymmetric power sum expansion of some quasi-analogues $Y_α$ of Schur functions, where $α$ is a composition. We show that they can be expressed as the sum of the $P$-partition generating functions of specific posets, which allows us to utilize the result established by Liu--Weselcouch. Additionally, we provide a new algorithm for obtaining these posets. Using these findings, for the dual immaculate function and the extended Schur function, we express the coefficients appearing in the quasisymmetric power sum expansions in terms of border strip tableaux.

Stirling Decomposition of Graph Homology in Genus 1
Published • View Publication • BIB
We prove that commutative graph homology in genus $g=1$ with $n\geq 3$ markings has a direct sum decomposition whose summands have rank given by Stirling numbers of the first kind. These summands are computed as the homology of complexes of certain decorated trees. This paper was written with a non-expert audience in mind, and an emphasis is placed on an elementary combinatorial description of these decorated tree complexes.

A characterization of positroids, with applications to amalgams and excluded minors
Published in European Journal of Combinatorics, 2024 • View Publication • BIB
A matroid of rank $r$ on $n$ elements is a positroid if it has a representation by an $r$ by $n$ matrix over $\mathbb{R}$, each $r$ by $r$ submatrix of which has nonnegative determinant. Earlier characterizations of connected positroids and results about direct sums of positroids involve connected flats and non-crossing partitions. We prove another characterization of positroids of a similar flavor and give some applications of the characterization. We show that if $M$ and $N$ are positroids and $E(M)\cap E(N)$ is an independent set and a set of clones in both $M$ and $N$, then the free amalgam of $M$ and $N$ is a positroid, and we prove a second result of that type. Also, we identify several multi-parameter infinite families of excluded minors for the class of positroids.

covering simplicial game complex
In this paper, we introduce a simplicial complex representation for finite non-cooperative games in the strategic form. The covering space of the simplicial game complex is introduced and we show that the covering complex is a powerful tool to find Nash Equilibrium simplices. This representation allows us to model the cost functions of a game as a weight number on a dual vertex of the strategy situation in some stars. It yields a canonical direct sum decomposition of an arbitrary game into three components, as the potential, harmonic and nonstrategic components.

Optimal functions with spectral constraints in hypercubes
Published • View Publication • BIB
The $n$-dimensional hypercube has $n+1$ distinct eigenvalues $n-2i$, $0\leq i\leq n$, with corresponding eigenspaces $U_i(n)$. In 2021 it was proved by the author that if a function with non-empty support belongs to the direct sum $U_i(n)\oplus U_{i+1}(n)\oplus\ldots\oplus U_j(n)$, where $0\leq i\leq j\leq n$, then it has at least $\max(2^i,2^{n-j})$ non-zeros. In this work we give a characterization of functions achieving this bound.

A characterization of orthogonal permutative matrices of order 4
Published in Linear Algebra and its Applications 654, 102-124 (2022) • View Publication • BIB
Orthogonal matrices which are linear combinations of permutation matrices have attracted enormous attention in quantum information and computation. In this paper, we provide a complete parametric characterization of all complex, real and rational orthogonal permutative matrices of order $4.$ We show that any such matrix can always be expressed as a linear combination of up to four permutation matrices. Finally we determine several matrix spaces generated by linearly independent permutation matrices such that any orthogonal matrix in these spaces is always permutative or direct sum of orthogonal permutative matrices up to permutation of its rows and columns.

An $E_\infty$ structure on the matroid grassmannian
In analogy with the origin of the additive structure of $K$-theory, we construct an $E_\infty$ structure on the matroid Grassmannian (the space of oriented matroids) for which the underlying binary operation is the direct sum of matroids. The proof involves lifting the polyhedral fan structure of the Dressian to a polyhedral model for the matroid Grassmannian, and introducing a novel $E_\infty$ operad made from the space of infinite subsets of $\mathbb{N}$.

Decompositions of q-Matroids Using Cyclic Flats
Published • View Publication • BIB
We study the direct sum of q-matroids by way of their cyclic flats. Using that the rank function of a q-matroid is fully determined by the cyclic flats and their ranks, we show that the cyclic flats of the direct sum of two q-matroids are exactly all the direct sums of the cyclic flats of the two summands. This simplifies the rank function of the direct sum significantly. A q-matroid is called irreducible if it cannot be written as a (non-trivial) direct sum. We provide a characterization of irreducibility in terms of the cyclic flats and show that every q-matroid can be decomposed into a direct sum of irreducible q-matroids, which are unique up to equivalence.
