Linear-Time Computation of the Frobenius Normal Form for Symmetric Toeplitz Matrices via Graph-Theoretic Decomposition
We introduce a linear-time algorithm for computing the Frobenius normal form (FNF) of symmetric Toeplitz matrices by utilizing their inherent structural properties through a graph-theoretic approach. Previous results of the authors established that the FNF of a symmetric Toeplitz matrix is explicitly represented as a direct sum of symmetric irreducible Toeplitz matrices, each corresponding to connected components in an associated weighted Toeplitz graph. Conventional matrix decomposition algorithms, such as Storjohann's method (1998), typically have cubic-time complexity. Moreover, standard graph component identification algorithms, such as breadth-first or depth-first search, operate linearly with respect to vertices and edges, translating to quadratic-time complexity solely in terms of vertices for dense graphs like weighted Toeplitz graphs. Our method uniquely leverages the structural regularities of weighted Toeplitz graphs, achieving linear-time complexity strictly with respect to vertices through two novel reductions: the α-type reduction, which eliminates isolated vertices, and the β-type reduction, applying residue class contractions to achieve rapid structural simplifications while preserving component structure. These reductions facilitate an efficient recursive decomposition process that yields linear-time performance for both graph component identification and the resulting FNF computation. This work highlights how structured combinatorial representations can lead to significant computational gains in symbolic linear algebra.
Some algebraic properties of ASM varieties
Published • View Publication • BIB
Fulton's matrix Schubert varieties are affine varieties that arise in the study of Schubert calculus in the complete flag variety. Weigandt showed that arbitrary intersections of matrix Schubert varieties, now called ASM varieties, are indexed by alternating sign matrices (ASMs), objects with a long history in enumerative combinatorics. It is very difficult to assess Cohen-Macaulayness of ASM varieties or to compute their codimension, though these properties are well understood for matrix Schubert varieties due to work of Fulton. In this paper we study these properties of ASM varieties with a focus on the relationship between a pair of ASMs and their direct sum. We also consider ASM pattern avoidance from an algebro-geometric perspective.

The Lie algebra $\mathfrak{sl}_4(\mathbb C)$ and the hypercubes
Published • View Publication • BIB
We describe a relationship between the Lie algebra $\mathfrak{sl}_4(\mathbb C)$ and the hypercube graphs. Consider the $\mathbb C$-algebra $P$ of polynomials in four commuting variables. We turn $P$ into an $\mathfrak{sl}_4(\mathbb C)$-module on which each element of $\mathfrak{sl}_4(\mathbb C)$ acts as a derivation. Then $P$ becomes a direct sum of irreducible $\mathfrak{sl}_4(\mathbb C)$-modules $P = \sum_{N\in \mathbb N} P_N$, where $P_N$ is the $N$th homogeneous component of $P$. For $N\in \mathbb N$ we construct some additional $\mathfrak{sl}_4(\mathbb C)$-modules ${\rm Fix}(G)$ and $T$. For these modules the underlying vector space is described as follows. Let $X$ denote the vertex set of the hypercube $H(N,2)$, and let $V$ denote the $\mathbb C$-vector space with basis $X$. For the automorphism group $G$ of $H(N,2)$, the action of $G$ on $X$ turns $V$ into a $G$-module. The vector space $V^{\otimes 3} = V \otimes V \otimes V$ becomes a $G$-module such that $g(u \otimes v \otimes w)= g(u) \otimes g(v) \otimes g(w)$ for $g\in G$ and $u,v,w \in V$. The subspace ${\rm Fix}(G)$ of $V^{\otimes 3}$ consists of the vectors in $V^{\otimes 3}$ that are fixed by every element in $G$. Pick $\varkappa \in X$. The corresponding subconstituent algebra $T$ of $H(N,2)$ is the subalgebra of ${\rm End}(V)$ generated by the adjacency map $\sf A$ of $H(N,2)$ and the dual adjacency map ${\sf A}^*$ of $H(N,2)$ with respect to $\varkappa$. In our main results, we turn ${\rm Fix}(G)$ and $T$ into $\mathfrak{sl}_4(\mathbb C)$-modules, and display $\mathfrak{sl}_4(\mathbb C)$-module isomorphisms $P_N \to {\rm Fix}(G) \to T$. We describe the $\mathfrak{sl}_4(\mathbb C)$-modules $P_N$, ${\rm Fix}(G)$, $T$ from multiple points of view.
Total trades, intersection matrices and Specht modules
Published • View Publication • BIB
Trades are important objects in combinatorial design theory that may be realized as certain elements of kernels of inclusion matrices. Total trades were introduced recently by Ghorbani, Kamali and Khosravshahi, who showed that over a field of characteristic zero the vector space of trades decomposes into a direct sum of spaces of total trades. In this paper, we show that the vector space spanned by the permutations of a total trade is an irreducible representation of the symmetric group. As a corollary, the previous decomposition theorem is recovered. Also, a basis is obtained for the module of total trades in the spirit of Specht polynomials. More generally, in the second part of the paper we consider intersection matrices and determine the irreducible decompositions of their images. This generalizes previously known results concerning ranks of special cases.
Dividing sums of cycles in the semiring of functional digraphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
Functional digraphs are unlabelled finite digraphs where each vertex has exactly one out-neighbor. They are isomorphic classes of finite discrete-time dynamical systems. Endowed with the direct sum and product, functional digraphs form a semiring with an interesting multiplicative structure. For instance, we do not know if the following division problem can be solved in polynomial time: given two functional digraphs $A$ and $B$, does $A$ divide $B$? That $A$ divides $B$ means that there exists a functional digraph $X$ such that $AX$ is isomorphic to $B$, and many such $X$ can exist. We can thus ask for the number of solutions $X$. In this paper, we focus on the case where $B$ is a sum of cycles (a disjoint union of cycles, corresponding to the limit behavior of finite discrete-time dynamical systems). There is then a naïve sub-exponential algorithm to compute the non-isomorphic solutions $X$, and our main result is an improvement of this algorithm which has the property to be polynomial when $A$ is fixed. It uses a divide-and-conquer technique that should be useful for further developments on the division problem.

Invariant theory for wreath products acting on superpolynomials
This paper considers a finite group $G$ acting linearly on the variables $V$ of a polynomial algebra, or an exterior algebra, or superpolynomial algebra with both commuting and anticommuting variables. In this setting, the Hilbert series for the $G$-invariant subalgebra turns out to determine the analogous Hilbert series for the wreath product $P[G]$ acting on $V^n$ for any permutation group $P$ inside the symmetric group $S_n$ on $n$ letters. This leads to a structural result: one can collate the direct sum for all $n$ of the $S_n[G]$-invariant subalgebras to form a graded ring via an external shuffle product, whose structure turns out to be a superpolynomial algebra generated by the $G$-invariants. A parallel statement holds for the direct sum of all $S_n[G]$-antiinvariants, which forms a graded ring via an external signed shuffle product, isomorphic to the superexterior algebra generated by the $G$-invariants.

Valuative Invariants of Catalan Matroids
Published • View Publication • BIB
We decompose the indicator function of each $(a, b)$-Catalan matroid polytope as a weighted sum of indicator function of matroid polytopes that correspond to direct sums of uniform matroids. Catalan matroids lie in the interior of the convex hull of direct sums of uniform matroids in the polytope of all matroids introduced by Ferroni and Fink. Moreover, we describe combinatorially the coefficients of the convex combination of direct sums of uniform matroid corresponding to an $(a,b)$-Catalan matroid. In particular, this allows us to derive explicit formulas for arbitrary valuative invariants of $(a, b)$-Catalan matroids. Among other applications, we prove that $(a,b)$-Catalan matroids are Ehrhart positive, and we find formulas for the Kazhdan--Lusztig invariants of these matroids.

Blowup Algebras of $n$--dimensional Ferrers Diagrams
Published • View Publication • BIB
We demonstrate that the direct sum of ideals satisfying the strong $\ell$-exchange property is of fiber type. Furthermore, we provide Gröbner bases of the presentation ideals of multi-Rees algebras and the corresponding special fibers, when they are associated with an $n$-dimensional Ferrers diagram that is standardizable. In particular, we show that these blowup algebras are Koszul Cohen--Macaulay normal domains and classify their singularities.

Four bases for the Onsager Lie algebra related by a $\mathbb{Z}_2 \times \mathbb{Z}_2$ action
Published • View Publication • BIB
The Onsager Lie algebra $O$ is an infinite-dimensional Lie algebra defined by generators $A$, $B$ and relations $[A, [A, [A, B]]] = 4[A, B]$ and $[B, [B, [B, A]]] = 4[B, A]$. Using an embedding of $O$ into the tetrahedron Lie algebra $\boxtimes$, we obtain four direct sum decompositions of the vector space $O$, each consisting of three summands. As we will show, there is a natural action of $\mathbb{Z}_2 \times \mathbb{Z}_2$ on these decompositions. For each decomposition, we provide a basis for each summand. Moreover, we describe the Lie bracket action on these bases and show how they are recursively constructed from the generators $A$, $B$ of $O$. Finally, we discuss the action of $\mathbb{Z}_2 \times \mathbb{Z}_2$ on these bases and determine some transition matrices among the bases.

The Cloud and Flock Polynomials of q-Matroids
We show that the Whitney function of a q-matroid can be determined from the cloud and flock polynomials associated to the cyclic flats. These polynomials capture information about the corank (resp., nullity) of certain spaces whose cyclic core (resp., closure) is the given cyclic flat. Going one step further, we prove that the Whitney function, and in fact the cloud-flock lattice, are determined by the configuration of the q-matroid, which is the abstract lattice of cyclic flats together with the corank-nullity data. Furthermore, we show that the configuration and cloud-flock lattice behave well under duality and direct sums, whereas the Whitney function does not contain enough information to behave well under taking direct sums. As an aside we show that every configuration of a matroid arises as a configuration of a q-matroid, whereas the converse is not true.

Ehrhart Polynomials of Order Polytopes: Interpreting Combinatorial Sequences on the OEIS
In this paper, we provide an overview of Ehrhart polynomials associated with order polytopes of finite posets, a concept first introduced by Stanley. We focus on their combinatorial interpretations for many sequences listed on the OEIS. We begin by exploring the Ehrhart series of order polytopes resulting from various poset operations, specifically the ordinal sum and direct sum. We then concentrate on the poset $P_λ$ associated with the Ferrers diagram of a partition $λ= (λ_1, λ_2, \ldots, λ_t)$. When $λ= (k, k-1, \ldots, 1)$, the Ehrhart polynomial is a shifted Hankel determinant of the well-known Catalan numbers; when $λ= (k, k, \ldots, k)$, the Ehrhart polynomial is solved by Stanley's hook content formula and is used to prove conjectures for the sequence [A140934] on the OEIS. When solving these problems, we rediscover Kreweras' determinant formula for the Ehrhart polynomial $\mathrm{ehr}(\mathcal{O}(P_λ), n)$ through the application of the Lindström-Gessel-Viennot lemma on non-intersecting lattice paths.
Primeness of generalized parking functions
Published • View Publication • BIB
Classical parking functions are a generalization of permutations that appear in many combinatorial structures. Prime parking functions are indecomposable components such that any classical parking function can be uniquely described as a direct sum of prime ones. In this article, we extend the notion of primeness to three generalizations of classical parking functions: vector parking functions, $(p,q)$-parking functions, and two-dimensional vector parking functions. We study their enumeration by obtaining explicit formulas for the number of prime vector parking functions when the vector is an arithmetic progression, prime $(p,q)$-parking functions, and prime two-dimensional vector parking functions when the weight matrix is an affine transformation of the coordinates.

Structural properties of a symmetric Toeplitz and Hankel matrices
Published in Linear Algebra and its Applications, 708: 204--216, 2025 • View Publication • BIB
In this paper, we investigate properties of a symmetric Toeplitz matrix and a Hankel matrix by studying the components of its graph. To this end, we introduce the notion of ``weighted Toeplitz graph" and ``weighted Hankel graph", which are weighted graphs whose adjacency matrix are a symmetric Toeplitz matrix and a Hankel matrix, respectively. By studying the components of a weighted Toeplitz graph, we show that the Frobenius normal form of a symmetric Toeplitz matrix is a direct sum of symmetric irreducible Toeplitz matrices. Similarly, by studying the components of a weighted Hankel matrix, we show that the Frobenius normal form of a Hankel matrix is a direct sum of irreducible Hankel matrices.

Tropical Split Jacobians of genus 2 and optimal covers
We explore connections between the category of tropical abelian varieties (tav), $\mathbb{T}\mathcal{A}$, and the the category of tropical curves, $\mathbb{T}\mathcal{C}$, first in a broader context and then specifically by studying the phenomenon of tropical split Jacobians. Jacobians of genus $2$ curves are two-dimensional tav and as such more complicated than their one-dimensional cousins. Whenever $Γ$, however, is a covering of an elliptic curve, it so happens that $Jac(Γ)$ splits into simpler objects, the direct sum of elliptic curves. This relation is pathological in essentially two ways, the splitting of $Jac(Γ)$ is not unique, and it is a priori not clear how to compute it. Similar to algebraic geometry, optimal coverings offer a remedy for both: They resolve indeterminacy as they provide us with a canonical choice. They resolve indeterminability as they provide us with an algorithmic approach. Our methods build on theory developed by Len, Mikhalkin, Röhrle, Ulirsch, Zakharov, Zharkov and many more. In accordance with this heritage, we want to put forth tropical geometry as a setting in which we can see abstraction at work. This means pairing "abstract machinery" with a constructive/algorithmic approach.

Wreath Macdonald polynomials, quiver varieties, and quasimap counts
Published • View Publication • BIB
We study the $K$-theoretic enumerative geometry of cyclic Nakajima quiver varieties, with particular focus on $\text{Hilb}^{m}([\mathbb{C}^{2}/\mathbb{Z}_{l}])$, the equivariant Hilbert scheme of points on $\mathbb{C}^2$. The direct sum over $m$ of the equivariant $K$-theories of these varieties is known to be isomorphic to the ring symmetric functions in $l$ colors, with structure sheaves of torus fixed points identified with wreath Macdonald polynomials. Using properties of wreath Macdonald polynomials and the recent identification of the Maulik-Okounkov quantum affine algebra for cyclic quivers with the quantum toroidal algebras of type $A$, we derive an explicit formula for the generating function of capped vertex functions of $\text{Hilb}^{m}([\mathbb{C}^{2}/\mathbb{Z}_{l}])$ with descendants given by exterior powers of the $0$th tautological bundle. We also sharpen the large framing vanishing results of Okounkov, providing a class of descendants and cyclic quiver varieties for which the capped vertex functions are purely classical. Our results also suggest certain integrality and wall-crossing conjectures for capped vertex functions.

On cycles in monotone grid classes of permutations
Published • View Publication • BIB
We undertake a detailed investigation into the structure of permutations in monotone grid classes whose row-column graphs do not contain components with more than one cycle. Central to this investigation is a new decomposition, called the $M$-sum, which generalises the well-known notions of direct sum and skew sum, and enables a deeper understanding of the structure of permutations in these grid classes. Permutations which are indecomposable with respect to the $M$-sum play a crucial role in the structure of a grid class and of its subclasses, and this leads us to identify coils, a certain kind of permutation which corresponds to repeatedly traversing a chosen cycle in a particular manner. Harnessing this analysis, we give a precise characterisation for when a subclass of such a grid class is labelled well quasi-ordered, and we extend this to characterise (unlabelled) well quasi-ordering in certain cases. We prove that a large general family of these grid classes are finitely based, but we also exhibit other examples that are not, thereby disproving a conjecture from 2006 due to Huczynska and Vatter.

Rook matroids and log-concavity of $P$-Eulerian polynomials
We define and study rook matroids, the bases of which correspond to non-nesting rook placements on a skew Ferrers board. We show that rook matroids are closed under taking duals and direct sums but not minors. Rook matroids are also a subclass of transversal matroids, positroids, and bear a subtle relationship to lattice path matroids that centers around not having the quaternary matroid $Q_{6}$ as a minor. The enumerative and distributional properties of non-nesting rook placements stand in contrast to that of usual rook placements: the non-nesting rook polynomial is not real-rooted in general, and is instead ultra-log-concave. We leverage this property together with a correspondence between rook placements and linear extensions of a poset to show that if $P$ is a naturally labeled width two poset, then the $P$-Eulerian polynomial $W_{P}$ is ultra-log-concave. This takes an important step towards resolving a log-concavity conjecture of Brenti (1989) and completes the story of the Neggers--Stanley conjecture for naturally labeled width two posets.
Representability of the direct sum of uniform q-matroids
Published • View Publication • BIB
There are many similarities between the theories of matroids and $q$-matroids. However, when dealing with the direct sum of $q$-matroids many differences arise. Most notably, it has recently been shown that the direct sum of representable $q$-matroids is not necessarily representable. In this work, we focus on the direct sum of uniform $q$-matroids. Using algebraic and geometric tools, together with the notion of cyclic flats of $q$-matroids, we show that this is always representable, by providing a representation over a sufficiently large field.

Terwilliger Algebra of the Ordered Hamming Scheme
This paper delves into the Terwilliger algebra associated with the ordered Hamming scheme, which extends from the wreath product of one-class association schemes and was initially introduced by Delsarte as a natural expansion of the Hamming schemes. Levstein, Maldonado and Penazzi have shown that the Terwilliger algebra of the Hamming scheme of length $n$ is the $n$-fold symmetric tensor algebra of that of the one-class association scheme. Furthermore, Bhattacharyya, Song and Tanaka have established that the Terwilliger algebra of the wreath product of a one-class association scheme is a direct sum of the ``primary'' subalgebra and commutative subalgebras. This paper extends these findings to encompass both conclusions.

Monochromatic Sumsets in Countable Colourings of Abelian Groups
Published • View Publication • BIB
Fernández-Bretón, Sarmiento and Vera showed that whenever a direct sum of sufficiently many copies of ${\mathbb Z}_4$, the cyclic group of order 4, is countably coloured there are arbitrarily large finite sets $X$ whose sumsets $X+X$ are monochromatic. They asked if the elements of order 4 are necessary, in the following strong sense: if $G$ is an abelian group having no elements of order 4, is it always the case there there is a countable colouring of $G$ for which there is not even a monochromatic sumset $X+X$ with $X$ of size 2? Our aim in this short note is to show that this is indeed the case.
