K-orbit closures on G/B as universal degeneracy loci for flagged vector bundles splitting as direct sums
Published • View Publication • BIB
We use equivariant localization and divided difference operators to determine formulas for the torus-equivariant fundamental cohomology classes of $K$-orbit closures on the flag variety $G/B$ for various symmetric pairs $(G,K)$. In type $A$, we realize the closures of $K=GL(p,\C) \times GL(q,\C)$-orbits on $GL(p+q,\C)/B$ as universal degeneracy loci for a vector bundle over a variety which is equipped with a single flag of subbundles and which splits as a direct sum of subbundles of ranks $p$ and $q$. The precise description of such a degeneracy locus relies upon knowing a set-theoretic description of $K$-orbit closures, which we provide via a detailed combinatorial analysis of the poset of "$(p,q)$-clans," which parametrize the orbit closures. We describe precisely how our formulas for the equivariant classes of $K$-orbit closures can be interpreted as formulas for the classes of such degeneracy loci in the Chern classes of the bundles involved. In the cases outside of type $A$, we suggest that the orbit closures should parametrize degeneracy loci involving a vector bundle equipped with a non-degenerate symmetric or skew-symmetric bilinear form, a single flag of subbundles which are isotropic or Lagrangian with respect to the form, and a splitting as a direct sum of subbundles with each summand satisfying some property (depending on $K$) with respect to the form. The precise description of such a degeneracy locus is conjectured for all cases in types $B$ and $C$.

The compositional inverse of a class of bilinear permutation polynomials over finite fields of characteristic 2
Published • View Publication • BIB
A class of bilinear permutation polynomials over a finite field of characteristic 2 was constructed in a recursive manner recently which involved some other constructions as special cases. We determine the compositional inverses of them based on a direct sum decomposition of the finite field. The result generalizes that in [R.S. Coulter, M. Henderson, The compositional inverse of a class of permutation polynomials over a finite field, Bull. Austral. Math. Soc. 65 (2002) 521-526].

Limits with braid arrangements
We define a monoid structure on the set of $k$-equal arrangements and use this structure to define limits of braid arrangements. We compute the cohomology of the associated limits of rational models of the arrangements complex complements. We collect these complexes together into one complex by creating a new differential and product on their direct sum and show that the resulting complex is exact.

Betti diagrams from graphs
Published in Algebra Number Theory 7 (2013) 1725-1742 • View Publication • BIB
The emergence of Boij-Söderberg theory has given rise to new connections between combinatorics and commutative algebra. Herzog, Sharifan, and Varbaro recently showed that every Betti diagram of an ideal with a k-linear minimal resolution arises from that of the Stanley-Reisner ideal of a simplicial complex. In this paper, we extend their result for the special case of 2-linear resolutions using purely combinatorial methods. Specifically, we show bijective correspondences between Betti diagrams of ideals with 2-linear resolutions, threshold graphs, and anti-lecture hall compositions. Moreover, we prove that any Betti diagram of a module with a 2-linear resolution is realized by a direct sum of Stanley-Reisner rings associated to threshold graphs. Our key observation is that these objects are the lattice points in a normal reflexive lattice polytope.

Semidirect sums of matroids
Published in Annals of Combinatorics, 2015 • View Publication • BIB
For matroids M and N on disjoint sets S and T, a semidirect sum of M and N is a matroid K on the union of S and T that, like the direct sum and the free product, has the restriction of K to S equal to M and the contraction of K to T equal to N. We abstract a matrix construction to get a general matroid construction: the matroid union of any rank-preserving extension of M on the union of S and T with the direct sum of N and the rank-0 matroid on S is a semidirect sum of M and N. We study principal sums in depth; these are such matroid unions where the extension of M has each element of T added either as a loop or freely on a fixed flat of M. A second construction of semidirect sums, defined by a Higgs lift, also specializes to principal sums. We also explore what can be deduced if M and N, or certain of their semidirect sums, are transversal or fundamental transversal matroids.

Frobenius map for the centers of Hecke algebras
Published in Trans. Amer. Math. Soc. 367 (2015), 5507--5520 • View Publication • BIB
We introduce a commutative associative graded algebra structure on the direct sum Z of the centers of the Hecke algebras associated to the symmetric groups in n letters for all n. As a natural deformation of the classical construction of Frobenius, we establish an algebra isomorphism from the algebra Z to the ring of symmetric functions. This isomorphism provides an identification between several distinguished bases for the centers (introduced by Geck-Rouquier, Jones, Lascoux) and explicit bases of symmetric functions.

The internally 4-connected binary matroids with no M(K5\e)-minor
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let AG(3,2)xU(1,1) denote the binary matroid obtained from the direct sum of AG(3,2) and a coloop by completing the 3-point lines between every element in AG(3,2) and the coloop. We prove that every internally 4-connected binary matroid that does not have a minor isomorphic to M(K5\e) is isomorphic to a minor of (AG(3,2)xU(1,1))*.

Shape-Wilf-equivalences for vincular patterns
Published • View Publication • BIB
We extend the notion of shape-Wilf-equivalence to vincular patterns (also known as "generalized patterns" or "dashed patterns"). First we introduce a stronger equivalence on patterns which we call filling-shape-Wilf-equivalence. When vincular patterns $α$ and $β$ are filling-shape-Wilf-equivalent, we prove that the direct sum $α\oplusσ$ is filling-shape-Wilf-equivalent to $β\oplusσ$. We also discover two new pairs of patterns which are filling-shape-Wilf-equivalent: when $α$, $β$, and $σ$ are nonempty consecutive patterns which are Wilf-equivalent, $α\oplusσ$ is filling-shape-Wilf-equivalent to $β\oplusσ$; and for any consecutive pattern $α$, $1\oplusα$ is filling-shape-Wilf-equivalent to $1\ominusα$. These equivalences generalize Wilf-equivalences found by Elizalde and Kitaev. These new equivalences imply many new Wilf-equivalences for vincular patterns

New light on Bergman complexes by decomposing matroid types
Published • View Publication • BIB
Bergman complexes are polyhedral complexes associated to matroids. Faces of these complexes are certain matroids, called matroid types, too. In order to understand the structure of these faces we decompose matroid types into direct summands. Ardila/Klivans proved that the Bergman Complex of a matroid can be subdivided into the order complex of the proper part of its lattice of flats. Beyond that Feichtner/Sturmfels showed that the Bergman complex can even be subdivided to the even coarser nested set complex. We will give a much shorter and more general proof of this fact. Generalizing formulas proposed by Ardila/Klivans and Feichtner/Sturmfels for special cases, we present a decomposition into direct sums working for faces of any of these complexes. Additionally we show that it is the finest possible decomposition for faces of the Bergman complex.

Partially Ordinal Sums and $P$-partitions
Published in The Electronic Journal of Combinatorics 19(4) (2012) #P29 • View Publication • BIB
We present a method of computing the generating function $f_P(\x)$ of $P$-partitions of a poset $P$. The idea is to introduce two kinds of transformations on posets and compute $f_P(\x)$ by recursively applying these transformations. As an application, we consider the partially ordinal sum $P_n$ of $n$ copies of a given poset, which generalizes both the direct sum and the ordinal sum. We show that the sequence $\{f_{P_n}(\x)\}_{n\ge 1}$ satisfies a finite system of recurrence relations with respect to $n$. We illustrate the method by several examples, including a kind of 3-rowed posets and the multi-cube posets.
Quiver Grassmannians and degenerate flag varieties
Published in ALGEBRA & NUMBER THEORY, vol. 6, p. 165-194, 2012 • View Publication • BIB
Quiver Grassmannians are varieties parametrizing subrepresentations of a quiver representation. It is observed that certain quiver Grassmannians for type A quivers are isomorphic to the degenerate flag varieties investigated earlier by the second named author. This leads to the consideration of a class of Grassmannians of subrepresentations of the direct sum of a projective and an injective representation of a Dynkin quiver. It is proven that these are (typically singular) irreducible normal local complete intersection varieties, which admit a group action with finitely many orbits, and a cellular decomposition. For type A quivers explicit formulas for the Euler characteristic (the median Genocchi numbers) and the Poincare polynomials are derived.

Gelfand models and Robinson-Schensted correspondence
Published • View Publication • BIB
In [F. Caselli, Involutory reflection groups and their models, J. Algebra 24 (2010), 370--393] there is constructed a uniform Gelfand model for all non-exceptional irreducible complex reflection groups which are involutory. Such model can be naturally decomposed into the direct sum of submodules indexed by $S_n$-conjugacy classes, and we present here a general result that relates the irreducible decomposition of these submodules with the projective Robinson-Schensted correspondence. This description also reflects in a very explicit way the existence of split representations for these groups.

The A-like matrices for a hypercube
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $D$ denote a positive integer and let $Q_D$ denote the graph of the $D$-dimensional hypercube. Let $X$ denote the vertex set of $Q_D$ and let $A \in \MX$ denote the adjacency matrix of $Q_D$. A matrix $B \in \MX$ is called $A$-{\em like} whenever both (i) $BA = AB$; (ii) for all $x,y \in X$ that are not equal or adjacent, the $(x,y)$-entry of $B$ is zero. Let $\Al$ denote the subspace of $\MX$ consisting of the $A$-like elements. We decompose $\Al$ into the direct sum of its symmetric part and antisymmetric part. We give a basis for each part. The dimensions of the symmetric part and antisymmetric part are $D+1$ and ${D \choose 2}$, respectively.

Structure of Hochschild cohomology of path algebras and differential formulation of Euler's polyhedron formula
Published in Asian Journal of Mathematics, 18 (2014) 545-572 • View Publication • BIB
This article studies the Lie algebra $Diff(KΓ)$ of derivations on the path algebra $KΓ$ of a quiver $Γ$ and the Lie algebra on the first Hochschild cohomology group $H^1(KΓ)$. We relate these Lie algebras to the algebraic and combinatorial properties of the path algebra. Characterizations of derivations on a path algebra are obtained, leading to a canonical basis of $Diff(KΓ)$ and its Lie algebra properties. Special derivations are associated to the vertices, arrows and faces of a quiver, and the concepts of a connected matrix and boundary matrix are introduced to study the relations among these derivations, concluding that the space of edge derivations is the direct sum of the spaces of the vertex derivations and the face derivations, while the dimensions of the latter spaces are the largest possible. By taking dimensions, this relation among spaces of derivations recovers Euler's polyhedron formula. This relation also leads a combinatorial construction of a canonical basis of the Lie algebra $H^1(KΓ)$, together with a semidirect sum decomposition of $H^1(KΓ)$.

Restrictions of generalized Verma modules to symmetric pairs
Published in Transformation Groups 17 (2012), pp. 523-546 • View Publication • BIB
We initiate a new line of investigation on branching problems for generalized Verma modules with respect to complex reductive symmetric pairs (g,k). Here we note that Verma modules of g may not contain any simple module when restricted to a reductive subalgebra k in general. In this article, using the geometry of K_C orbits on the generalized flag variety G_C/P_C, we give a necessary and sufficient condition on the triple (g,k, p) such that the restriction X|_k always contains simple k-modules for any g-module $X$ lying in the parabolic BGG category O^p attached to a parabolic subalgebra p of g. Formulas are derived for the Gelfand-Kirillov dimension of any simple k-module occurring in a simple generalized Verma module of g. We then prove that the restriction X|_k is multiplicity-free for any generic g-module X \in O if and only if (g,k) is isomorphic to a direct sum of (A_n,A_{n-1}), (B_n,D_n), or (D_{n+1},B_n). We also see that the restriction X|_k is multiplicity-free for any symmetric pair (g, k) and any parabolic subalgebra p with abelian nilradical and for any generic g-module X \in O^p. Explicit branching laws are also presented.

Refined Gelfand models for wreath products
Published • View Publication • BIB
In [F. Caselli, Involutory reflection groups and their models, J. Algebra 24 (2010), 370--393] it is constructed a uniform Gelfand model for all non-exceptional irreducible complex reflection groups which are involutory. This model can be naturally decomposed into the direct sum of submodules indexed by symmetric conjugacy classes, and in this paper we present a simple combinatorial description of the irreducible decomposition of these submodules if the group is the wreath product of a cyclic group with a symmetric group. This is attained by showing that such decomposition is compatible with the generalized Robinson-Schensted correspondence for these groups.

${\mathbb G}_a^M$ degeneration of flag varieties
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $\Fl_λ$ be a generalized flag variety of a simple Lie group $G$ embedded into the projectivization of an irreducible $G$-module $V_λ$. We define a flat degeneration $\Fl_λ^a$, which is a ${\mathbb G}^M_a$ variety. Moreover, there exists a larger group $G^a$ acting on $\Fl_λ^a$, which is a degeneration of the group $G$. The group $G^a$ contains ${\mathbb G}^M_a$ as a normal subgroup. If $G$ is of type $A$, then the degenerate flag varieties can be embedded into the product of Grassmanians and thus to the product of projective spaces. The defining ideal of $\Fl^a_λ$ is generated by the set of degenerate Pl\" ucker relations. We prove that the coordinate ring of $\Fl_λ^a$ is isomorphic to a direct sum of dual PBW-graded $\g$-modules. We also prove that there exist bases in multi-homogeneous components of the coordinate rings, parametrized by the semistandard PBW-tableux, which are analogues of semistandard tableux.

Representations of Quivers over F1
Published • View Publication • BIB
We define and study the category $\RepQ$ of representations of a quiver in $\VFun$ - the category of vector spaces "over $\Fun$". $\RepQ$ is an $\Fun$-linear category possessing kernels, co-kernels, and direct sums. Moreover, $\RepQ$ satisfies analogues of the Jordan-Hölder and Krull-Schmidt theorems. We are thus able to define the Hall algebra $\HQ$ of $\RepQ$, which behaves in some ways like the specialization at $q=1$ of the Hall algebra of $\on{Rep}(\Q, \mathbf{F}_q)$. We prove the existence of a Hopf algebra homomorphism of $ ρ': \U(\n_+) \rightarrow \HQ$, from the enveloping algebra of the nilpotent part $\n_+$ of the Kac-Moody algebra with Dynkin diagram $\bar{\Q}$ - the underlying unoriented graph of $\Q$. We study $ρ'$ when $\Q$ is the Jordan quiver, a quiver of type $A$, the cyclic quiver, and a tree respectively.

K-classes of matroids and equivariant localization
Published in Duke Math. J. 161, no. 14 (2012), 2699-2723 • View Publication • BIB
To every matroid, we associate a class in the K-theory of the Grassmannian. We study this class using the method of equivariant localization. In particular, we provide a geometric interpretation of the Tutte polynomial. We also extend results of the second author concerning the behavior of such classes under direct sum, series and parallel connection and two-sum; these results were previously only established for realizable matroids, and their earlier proofs were more difficult.

The direct sum map on Grassmannians and jeu de taquin for increasing tableaux
Published in Int Math Res Notices (2011) Vol. 2011 2766-2793 • View Publication • BIB
The direct sum map Gr(a,n) x Gr(b,m) -> Gr(a+b,m+n) on Grassmannians induces a K-theory pullback that defines the splitting coefficients. We geometrically explain an identity from [Buch '02] between the splitting coefficients and the Schubert structure constants for products of Schubert structure sheaves. This is related to the topic of product and splitting coefficients for Schubert boundary ideal sheaves. Our main results extend jeu de taquin for increasing tableaux [Thomas-Yong '09] by proving transparent analogues of [Schützenberger '77]'s fundamental theorems on well-definedness of rectification. We then establish that jeu de taquin gives rules for each of these four kinds of coefficients.
