Let $P(M)$ be the matroid base polytope of a matroid $M$. A {\em matroid base polytope decomposition} of $P(M)$ is a decomposition of the form $P(M) = \bigcup\limits_{i=1}^t P(M_{i})$ where each $P(M_i)$ is also a matroid base polytope for some matroid $M_i$, and for each $1\le i \neq j\le t$, the intersection $P(M_{i}) \cap P(M_{j})$ is a face of both $P(M_i)$ and $P(M_j)$. In this paper, we investigate {\em hyperplane splits}, that is, polytope decompositions when $t=2$. We give sufficient conditions for $M$ so $P(M)$ has a hyperplane split and characterize when $P(M_1 \oplus M_2)$ has a hyperplane split where $M_1 \oplus M_2$ denote the {\em direct sum} of matroids $M_1$ and $M_2$. We also prove that $P(M)$ has not a hyperplane split if $M$ is binary. Finally, we show that $P(M)$ has not a decomposition if its 1-skeleton is the {\em hypercube}.

Let Δbe a finite sequence of n vectors from a vector space over any field. We consider the subspace of \operatorname{Sym}(V) spanned by \prod_{v \in S} v, where S is a subsequence of Δ. A result of Orlik and Terao provides a doubly indexed direct sum of this space. The main theorem is that the resulting Hilbert series is the Tutte polynomial evaluation T(Δ;1+x,y). Results of Ardila and Postnikov, Orlik and Terao, Terao, and Wagner are obtained as corollaries.

In a recent paper Gunnells, Scott and Walden have determined the complete spectrum of the Schreier graph on the symmetric group corresponding to the Young subgroup $S_{n-2}\times S_2$ and generated by initial reversals. In particular they find that the first nonzero eigenvalue, or spectral gap, of the Laplacian is always 1, and report that "empirical evidence" suggests that this also holds for the corresponding Cayley graph. We provide a simple proof of this last assertion, based on the decomposition of the Laplacian of Cayley graphs, into a direct sum of irreducible representation matrices of the symmetric group.

Let $G$ be an infinite abelian group with $|2G|=|G|$. We show that if $G$ is not the direct sum of a group of exponent 3 and the group of order 2, then $G$ possesses a perfect additive basis; that is, there is a subset $S\subseteq G$ such that every element of $G$ is uniquely representable as a sum of two elements of $S$. Moreover, if $G$ \emph{is} the direct sum of a group of exponent 3 and the group of order 2, then it does not have a perfect additive basis; however, in this case there is a subset $S\subseteq G$ such that every element of $G$ has at most two representations (distinct under permuting the summands) as a sum of two elements of $S$. This solves completely the Erdos-Turan problem for infinite groups.
It is also shown that if $G$ is an abelian group of exponent 2, then there is a subset $S\subseteq G$ such that every element of $G$ has a representation as a sum of two elements of $S$, and the number of representations of non-zero elements is bounded by an absolute constant.

Natural join of $di-bigraphs$ that is directed biparted graphs and their corresponding adjacency matrices is defined and then applied to investigate the so called cobweb posets and their $Hasse$ digraphs called $KoDAGs$. $KoDAGs$ are special orderable directed acyclic graphs which are cover relation digraphs of cobweb posets introduced by the author few years ago. $KoDAGs$ appear to be distinguished family of $Ferrers$ digraphs which are natural join of a corresponding ordering chain of one direction directed cliques called $di-bicliques$. These digraphs serve to represent faithfully corresponding relations of arbitrary arity so that all relations of arbitrary arity are their subrelations. Being this $chain -way$ complete if compared with kompletne $Kuratowski$ bipartite graphs their $DAG$ denotation is accompanied with the letter $K$ in front of descriptive abbreviation $oDAG$. The way to join bipartite digraphs of binary into $multi-ary$ relations is the natural join operation either on relations or their digraph representatives. This natural join operation is denoted here by $\os$ symbol deliberately referring to the direct sum $\oplus$ of adjacency matrices as it becomes the case for disjoint $di-bigraphs$.
Homology representations arising from the half cube, II

In a previous work (arXiv:0806.1503v2), we defined a family of subcomplexes of the $n$-dimensional half cube by removing the interiors of all half cube shaped faces of dimension at least $k$, and we proved that the homology of such a subcomplex is concentrated in degree $k-1$. This homology group supports a natural action of the Coxeter group $W(D_n)$ of type $D$. In this paper, we explicitly determine the characters (over ${\Bbb C}$) of these homology representations, which turn out to be multiplicity free. Regarded as representations of the symmetric group $S_n$ by restriction, the homology representations turn out to be direct sums of certain representations induced from parabolic subgroups. The latter representations of $\sym_n$ agree (over ${\Bbb C}$) with the representations of $\sym_n$ on the $(k-2)$-nd homology of the complement of the $k$-equal real hyperplane arrangement.
A Lefschetz hyperplane theorem for Mori dream spaces

Let X be a smooth Mori dream space of dimension at least 4. We show that, if X satisfies a suitable GIT condition which we call "small unstable locus", then every smooth ample divisor Y of X is also a Mori dream space. Moreover, the restriction map identifies the Neron-Severi spaces of X and Y, and under this identification every Mori chamber of Y is a union of some Mori chambers of X, and the nef cone of Y is the same as the nef cone of X. This Lefschetz-type theorem enables one to construct many examples of Mori dream spaces by taking "Mori dream hypersurfaces" of an ambient Mori dream space, provided that it satisfies the GIT condition. To facilitate this, we then show that the GIT condition is stable under taking products and taking the projective bundle of the direct sum of at least three line bundles, and in the case when X is toric, we show that the condition is equivalent to the fan of X being 2-neighborly.
The Planar Rook Algebra and Pascal's Triangle

We study the combinatorial representation theory of the ``planar rook algebra" $P_n$. This algebra has a basis consisting of planar rook diagrams and multiplication given by diagram concatenation. For each integer $0 \le k \le n$, we construct natural representations $V^n_k$ which form a complete set of non-isomorphic, irreducible $P_n$-representations. We explicitly decompose the regular representation of $P_n$ into a direct sum of irreducible modules. We compute the Bratteli diagram for the tower of algebras $P_0 \subseteq P_1 \subseteq P_2 \subseteq ...$ and show that this Bratteli diagram is Pascal's triangle. In fact, we show that many of the binomial identities, both additive and multiplicative, have interpretations in terms of the representation theory of the planar rook algebra.
Connectedness in graph limits
We define direct sums and a corresponding notion of connectedness for graph limits. Every graph limit has a unique decomposition as a direct sum of connected components. As is well-known, graph limits may be represented by symmetric functions on a probability space; there are natural definitions of direct sums and connectedness for such functions, and there is a perfect correspondence with the corresponding properties of the graph limit. Similarly, every graph limit determines an infinite random graph, which is a.s. connected if and only if the graph limit is connected. There are also characterizations in terms of the asymptotic size of the largest component in the corresponding finite random graphs, and of minimal cuts in sequences of graphs converging to a given limit.
Cyclotomic Solomon Algebras

This paper introduces an analogue of the Solomon descent algebra for the complex reflection groups of type $G(r,1,n)$. As with the Solomon descent algebra, our algebra has a basis given by sums of `distinguished' coset representatives for certain `reflection subgroups'. We explicitly describe the structure constants with respect to this basis and show that they are polynomials in $r$. This allows us to define a deformation, or $q$-analogue, of these algebras which depends on a parameter $q$. We determine the irreducible representations of all of these algebras and give a basis for their radicals. Finally, we show that the direct sum of cyclotomic Solomon algebras is canonically isomorphic to a concatenation Hopf algebra.
Some matrices associated with the split decomposition for a Q-polynomial distance-regular graph

We consider a $Q$-polynomial distance-regular graph $Γ$ with vertex set $X$ and diameter $D \geq 3$. For $μ, ν\in \lbrace \downarrow, \uparrow \rbrace$ we define a direct sum decomposition of the standard module $V=\C X$, called the $(μ,ν)$--split decomposition. For this decomposition we compute the complex conjugate and transpose of the associated primitive idempotents. Now fix $b,β\in \mathbb C$ such that $b \neq 1$ and assume $Γ$ has classical parameters $(D,b,α,β)$ with $α= b-1$. Under this assumption Ito and Terwilliger displayed an action of the $q$-tetrahedron algebra $\boxtimes_q$ on the standard module of $Γ$. To describe this action they defined eight matrices in
$\hbox{Mat}_X(\mathbb C)$, called \begin{eqnarray*} \label{eq:list} A,\quad A^*,\quad B,\quad B^*, \quad K,\quad K^*,\quad Φ,\quad Ψ. \end{eqnarray*}
For each matrix in the above list we compute the transpose and complex conjugate. Using this information we compute the transpose and complex conjugate for each generator of $\boxtimes_q$ on $V$.
A duality between pairs of split decompositions for a $Q$-polynomial distance-regular graph
Let $Γ$ denote a $Q$-polynomial distance-regular graph with diameter $D \geq 3$ and standard module $V$. Recently Ito and Terwilliger introduced four direct sum decompositions of $V$; we call these the $(μ,ν)$--{\it split decompositions} of $V$, where $μ, ν\in \lbrace \downarrow, \uparrow \rbrace$. In this paper we show that the ($\downarrow,\downarrow$)--split decomposition and the ($\uparrow,\uparrow$)--split decomposition are dual with respect to the standard Hermitian form on $V$. We also show that the ($\downarrow,\uparrow$)--split decomposition and the ($\uparrow,\downarrow$)--split decomposition are dual with respect to the standard Hermitian form on $V$.
Multiplier ideals of sums via cellular resolutions

Fix nonzero ideal sheaves a_1,...,a_r on a normal Q-Gorenstein complex variety X. Fix any positive real number c, and consider the multiplier ideal J of the sum a_1+...+a_r with weighting coefficient c. We construct an exact sequence resolving J by sheaves over X that are direct sums of multiplier ideals for products a_1^{v_1}...a_r^{v_r} for various real vectors v such that v_1+...+v_r = c. The resolution is cellular, in the sense that its boundary maps are encoded by the algebraic chain complex of a regular CW-complex. The CW-complex is naturally expressed as a triangulation T of the simplex of nonnegative real vectors summing to c. The acyclicity of our resolution reduces to that of a cellular free resolution, supported on T, of a related monomial ideal. This acyclicity rests on a comparison between the homology of certain homology-manifolds-with-boundary and the homology of the simplicial complexes obtained by deleting collections of boundary faces from them. Our resolution implies the multiplier ideal sum formula J((a_1+...+a_r)^c) = \sum_{|v|=c} J(a_1^{v_1}...a_r^{v_r}), which implicitly follows from Takagi's proof of the two-summand formula (math.AG/0410612). We recover Howald's multiplier ideal formula for monomial ideals (math.AG/0003232) as a special case. Our resolution also yields a new exactness proof for the Skoda complex.

In this paper we characterize the congruence associated to the direct sum of all irreducible representations of a finite semigroup over an arbitrary field, generalizing results of Rhodes for the field of complex numbers. Applications are given to obtain many new results, as well as easier proofs of several results in the literature, involving: triangularizability of finite semigroups; which semigroups have (split) basic semigroup algebras, two-sided semidirect product decompositions of finite monoids; unambiguous products of rational languages; products of rational languages with counter; and Černý's conjecture for an important class of automata.

The notion of an Abstract Young (briefly: AY) representation is a natural generalization of the classical Young orthogonal form. The AY representations of the symmetric group are characterized by Adin, Brenti and Roichman in [U2]. In this paper we present several types of minimal AY representation of $D_n$ associated with standard D-Young tableaux which are a natural generalization of usual standard Young tableaux. We give an explicit combinatorial view (the representation space is spanned by certain standard tableaux while the action is a generalized Young orthogonal form) of representations which are induced into $D_n$ from minimal AY representations of one of the natural embeddings of $S_n$ into $D_n$. Then we show that these induced representations are isomorphic to the direct sum of two or three minimal AY representations of $D_n$ also associated with standard D-Young tableaux. It is done by constructing a continuous path between representation matrices where one end of the path is the mentioned direct sum; another end is the classical form of induced representation. In the last section we briefly explain how the similar results may be obtained for the group $B_n$ instead of $D_n$.
Binomial D-modules

We study quotients of the Weyl algebra by left ideals whose generators consist of an arbitrary Z^d-graded binomial ideal I along with Euler operators defined by the grading and a parameter in C^d. We determine the parameters for which these D-modules (i) are holonomic (equivalently, regular holonomic, when I is standard-graded); (ii) decompose as direct sums indexed by the primary components of I; and (iii) have holonomic rank greater than the generic rank. In each of these three cases, the parameters in question are precisely those outside of a certain explicitly described affine subspace arrangement in C^d. In the special case of Horn hypergeometric D-modules, when I is a lattice basis ideal, we furthermore compute the generic holonomic rank combinatorially and write down a basis of solutions in terms of associated A-hypergeometric functions. This study relies fundamentally on the explicit lattice point description of the primary components of an arbitrary binomial ideal in characteristic zero, which we derive in our companion article arxiv:0803.3846.

The combinatorial theory of species developed by Joyal provides a foundation for enumerative combinatorics of objects constructed from finite sets. In this paper we develop an analogous theory for the enumerative combinatorics of objects constructed from vector spaces over finite fields. Examples of these objects include subspaces, flags of subspaces, direct sum decompositions, and linear maps or matrices of various types. The unifying concept is that of a q-species, defined to be a functor from the category of finite dimensional vector spaces over a finite field with to the category of finite sets.

We give a combinatorial description (including explicit differential-form bases) for the cohomology groups of the space of n distinct nonzero complex numbers, with coefficients in rank-one local systems which are of finite monodromy around the coordinate hyperplanes and trivial monodromy around all other hyperplanes. In the case where the local system is equivariant for the symmetric group, we write the cohomology groups as direct sums of inductions of one-dimensional characters of subgroups. This relies on an equivariant description of the Orlik-Solomon algebras of full monomial reflection groups (wreath products of the symmetric group with a cyclic group). The combinatorial models involved are certain representations of these wreath products which possess bases indexed by labelled trees.

For $G$ a finite abelian group, we study the properties of general equivalence relations on $G_n=G^n\rtimes \SG_n$, the wreath product of $G$ with the symmetric group $\SG_n$, also known as the $G$-coloured symmetric group. We show that under certain conditions, some equivalence relations give rise to subalgebras of $\k G_n$ as well as graded connected Hopf subalgebras of $\bigoplus_{n\ge o} \k G_n$. In particular we construct a $G$-coloured peak subalgebra of the Mantaci-Reutenauer algebra (or $G$-coloured descent algebra). We show that the direct sum of the $G$-coloured peak algebras is a Hopf algebra. We also have similar results for a $G$-colouring of the Loday-Ronco Hopf algebras of planar binary trees. For many of the equivalence relations under study, we obtain a functor from the category of finite abelian groups to the category of graded connected Hopf algebras. We end our investigation by describing a Hopf endomorphism of the $G$-coloured descent Hopf algebra whose image is the $G$-coloured peak Hopf algebra. We outline a theory of combinatorial $G$-coloured Hopf algebra for which the $G$-coloured quasi-symmetric Hopf algebra and the graded dual to the $G$-coloured peak Hopf algebra are central objects.
