On the Hilbert polynomial of the linked projective space
Linked projective spaces are quiver Grassmannians of subspaces of dimension 1 of certain quiver representations. Degenerations of linear series produce these representations, with the limit divisors parameterized by the associated linked projective spaces. It is not known whether all linked projective spaces arise this way. If they do, they are degenerations of the (small) diagonal in a product of projective spaces. In any case, we prove here that they have the (multivariate) Hilbert polynomial of the diagonal. To achieve this, we first extend a Hilbert-polynomial formula for multiplicity-free varieties to (simple) normal-crossings schemes with multiplicity-free strata in products of projective spaces. Then we prove that a linked projective space is normal-crossings, by describing it locally in terms of Mustafin varieties. Finally, we use a relation between intersections of components of the linked projective space and certain polytopes in the tiling of a simplex associated to the linked net to prove that our formula for the Hilbert polynomial applies.
Torsion of every finite order in the homology of graph braid groups
We determine the torsion subgroup of $H_{m-1}(\mathbb{B}_mK_{m+1,m+r-1};\mathbb{Z})$ for $m\ge2$ and $r\ge0$: top homology with arbitrary coefficients is the kernel of an unsigned subset-inclusion matrix, and its integral diagonal form determines all primary summands. Every finite order occurs, with explicit representatives. Generalized theta classes span an embedded copy of the cokernel of the inclusion matrix, containing all torsion; for $r\ge m$ they generate the torsion, each of order $\operatorname{lcm}(1,\ldots,m)$. For every prime power $q$ and $m\ge q$, the graph $K_{m+1,m+q-1}$ is minimal in the minor order for order-$q$ torsion in $H_{m-1}(\mathbb{B}_m)$. In particular, odd torsion first appears in $H_2(\mathbb{B}_3K_{4,5})\cong\mathbb{Z}^{155}\oplus(\mathbb{Z}/2)^4\oplus\mathbb{Z}/3$, and no proper minor of $K_{4,5}$ has odd torsion in $H_2(\mathbb{B}_3)$. For arbitrary part sizes, we give a multiplicity-free decomposition of $H_m(\mathbb{B}_mK_{a,b};\mathbb{Q})$ under vertex permutations and prove that $H_{m-1}(\mathbb{B}_mK_{a,b};\mathbb{Z})$ has no $p$-primary torsion when $a,b\ge2m-1$ and $p\ge m$ is an odd prime. The explicit order-$q$ class retains its order under every enlargement of the second part of the graph, while for $m=q=p$ an odd prime it is killed by a specified enlargement of the first part.
Orbit span of a design and some saturation theorems in commutative Schurian association schemes
Orbit-span and dimension problems for designs have been studied in several classical association schemes using a variety of methods. Recently, through a detailed analysis of total trades, Ghorbani et al. showed that the orbit of a fixed combinatorial design asymptotically attains the full dimension permitted by the design equations. Analogous dimension-saturation results for the global spans of index-one designs in the bilinear forms and Grassmann schemes were obtained via laborious eigenvalue computations.
In this paper, we work with the top fiber $X$ of a graded poset carrying a compatible transitive action of a finite group $G$, and assume that the induced Schurian association scheme on $X$ is commutative. For the multiplicity-free decomposition $\mathbb{C}^{X}=U_{0}\oplus U_{1}\oplus\cdots\oplus U_{m}$, we prove that, under explicit spectral and quantitative conditions, the $G$-orbit of the characteristic vector of any $t$-design spans the maximal submodule $U_{0}\oplus U_{t+1}\oplus U_{t+2}\oplus\cdots\oplus U_{m}$ allowed by the $t$-design definition. We verify these conditions asymptotically for the Hamming, bilinear forms, Johnson, and Grassmann schemes. This recovers the fixed-orbit saturation theorem of Ghorbani et al. for combinatorial designs, gives a new result for orthogonal arrays, and asymptotically extends the previous bilinear forms and Grassmann results to orbit spans of individual designs of arbitrary fixed index.
Type $B$ fermionic coinvariant rings
Let $\mathfrak{B}_n$ denote the hyperoctahedral group. The type $B$ coinvariant rings $R_{\mathfrak{B}_n}^{(k,j)}$ are quotients of the ring of polynomials in $k$ sets of $n$ commuting variables and $j$ sets of $n$ anticommuting variables by the ideal generated by the diagonal $\mathfrak{B}_n$-invariants without constant term. Building upon the work of Kim--Rhoades (2022), we give an explicit formula for the bigraded Frobenius series of $R_{\mathfrak{B}_n}^{(0,2)}$: the bigraded multiplicity of each irreducible $\mathfrak{B}_n$-character is a single Schur polynomial, so $R_{\mathfrak{B}_n}^{(0,2)}$ is multiplicity-free as a $\operatorname{GL}_2 \times \mathfrak{B}_n$-module. We then determine that the trigraded multiplicity of the sign character of $R_{\mathfrak{B}_n}^{(0,3)}$ is given by a single Schur function. Finally, for all $k$ and $j$, we determine the multiplicity of the standard character in the type $A$ coinvariant ring $R_{n}^{(k,j)}$, as well as the multiplicities of the characters indexed by the bipartitions $((n-1),(1))$ and $((n-1,1),\varnothing)$ in $R_{\mathfrak{B}_n}^{(k,j)}$. These are the first nontrivial characters established for all $(k,j)$ in either of types $A$ or $B$.
Intertwining Operators for Siegel Parabolics over Finite Fields
We consider degenerate principal series representations $\operatorname{Ind}_P^Gχ$ over finite fields, where $G$ is a classical subgroup of $\operatorname{GL}_{2n}$, and $P$ is the Siegel parabolic subgroup. For example, we show that this representation is always multiplicity-free and irreducible for generic characters $χ$. We then discuss a particular intertwining operator $I$ on $\operatorname{Ind}_P^Gχ$ and its related combinatorics. Firstly, this operator $I$ produces families of diagonalizable antitriangular matrices with well-behaved eigenvalues. Secondly, applying $I$ to a special vector in $\operatorname{Ind}_P^Gχ$ leads us to various matrix Gauss sums, whose evaluations imply an explicit equidistribution result of the trace and determinant of symmetric and alternating invertible matrices.

The thagomizer matroid, realized as the graphic matroid of the complete tripartite graph $K_{1,1,n}$, has full automorphism group isomorphic to the hyperoctahedral group whenever $n \ge 2$. In the equivariant setting for this action, we compute both the Kazhdan--Lusztig polynomial and the inverse Kazhdan--Lusztig polynomial in the sense of Proudfoot's Kazhdan--Lusztig--Stanley theory, and we show that each coefficient is an honest representation with a multiplicity-free irreducible decomposition. Our main idea is to exploit the palindromicity of the equivariant $Z$-polynomial, reducing the computation to the already established symmetric-group equivariant Kazhdan--Lusztig theory for the graphic matroids of cycle graphs, and then to apply Proudfoot's equivariant Kazhdan--Lusztig--Stanley inversion identity to obtain the inverse polynomial. Passing to dimensions recovers the previously known nonequivariant thagomizer polynomials, while the coefficient formulas admit a natural expression in terms of the wreath product Frobenius characteristic for the hyperoctahedral group.
Embedding a Praeger-Xu graph into a surface
Rotary maps (orientably regular maps) are highly symmetric graph embeddings on orientable surfaces. This paper classifies all rotary maps whose underlying graphs are Praeger-Xu graphs, denoted $\operatorname{C}(p,r,s)$, for any odd prime $p$ that does not divide $r$. Our main result establishes a one-to-one correspondence between the isomorphism classes of these maps and the multiplicity-free representations of the dihedral group $\operatorname{D}_{2r}$ over the finite field $\mathbb{F}_p$. This work extends a recent classification for the case where $p=2$.
Hypergraph Characterization of Fusion Rings
We present a correspondence between multiplicity-free, self-dual,
fusion rings and a digraph, hypergraph pair $(D,H)$. This
correspondence is used to provide a complete characterization of all
fusion rings corresponding to graphical properties of $D$. Further,
we exploit this correspondence to provide a complete list of all
non-isomorphic,
self-dual, multiplicity-free fusion rings of rank at most 8.

A strong Gelfand pair $(G,H)$ is a finite group $G$ together with a subgroup $H$ such that every irreducible character of $H$ induces to a multiplicity-free character of $G$. We classify the strong Gelfand pairs of the finite symplectic groups ${\rm Sp}_4(q)$ for even $q$.

Kohnert polynomials and their associated posets are combinatorial objects with deep geometric and representation theoretic connections, generalizing both Schubert polynomials and type A Demazure characters. In this paper, we explore the properties of Kohnert polynomials and their posets indexed by northeast diagrams. We give separate classifications of the bounded, ranked, and multiplicity-free Kohnert posets for northeast diagrams, each of which can be computed in polynomial time with respect to the number of cells in the diagram. As an initial application, we specialize these classifications to simple criteria in the case of lock diagrams.

Non-binary codes correcting multiple deletions have recently attracted a lot of attention. In this work, we focus on multiplicity-free codes, a family of non-binary codes where all symbols are distinct. Our main contribution is a new explicit construction of such codes, based on set and permutation codes. We show that our multiplicity-free codes can correct multiple deletions and provide a decoding algorithm. We also show that, for a certain regime of parameters, our constructed codes have size larger than all the previously known non-binary codes correcting multiple deletions.
Relations between generalised Gelfand-Tsetlin and Kazhdan-Lusztig bases of $S_n$
We prove that the Kazhdan-Lusztig basis of Specht modules is upper triangular with respect to all generalized Gelfand-Tsetlin bases constructed from any multiplicity-free tower of standard parabolic subgroups.

Let $K\leq H$ be two finite groups and let $C\leq A$ be two finite abelian groups, with $H$ acting on $A$ as a group of isomorphisms admitting $C$ as a $K$-invariant subgroup. We study the homogeneous space $X\coloneqq\left(H\ltimes A\right)/\left(K\ltimes C\right)$ and determine the decomposition of the permutation representation of $H\ltimes A$ acting on $X$. We then characterize when this is multiplicity-free, that is, when $\left(H\ltimes A,K\ltimes C\right)$ is a Gelfand pair. If this is the case, we explicitly calculate the corresponding spherical functions. From our general construction and related analysis, we recover Dunkl's results on the $q$-analog of the nonbinary Johnson scheme.
K-theoretic positivity for matroids

Hilbert polynomials have positivity properties under favorable conditions. We establish a similar "K-theoretic positivity" for matroids. As an application, for a multiplicity-free subvariety of a product of projective spaces such that the projection onto one of the factors has birational image, we show that a transformation of its K-polynomial is Lorentzian. This partially answers a conjecture of Castillo, Cid-Ruiz, Mohammadi, and Montano. As another application, we show that the h*-vector of a simplicially positive divisor on a matroid is a Macaulay vector, affirmatively answering a question of Speyer for a new infinite family of matroids.

Let $n$ be a non-negative integer. Combining algebraic and combinatorial techniques, we investigate for which pairs $(G,ρ)$ of a subgroup $G$ of the symmetric group $S_n$ and an irreducible character $ρ$ of $G$ the induced character $ρ\!\uparrow^{S_n}$ is multiplicity-free. As a result, for $n\geq 66$, we classify all subgroups $G\leq S_n$ which give rise to such a pair. Moreover, for the majority of these groups $G$ we identify all the possible choices of the irreducible character $ρ$, assuming $n\geq 73$.
On cocliques in commutative Schurian association schemes of the symmetric group
Given the symmetric group $G = \operatorname{Sym}(n)$ and a multiplicity-free subgroup $H\leq G$, the orbitals of the action of $G$ on $G/H$ by left multiplication induce a commutative association scheme. The irreducible constituents of the permutation character of $G$ acting on $G/H$ are indexed by partitions of $n$ and if $λ\vdash n$ is the second largest partition in dominance ordering among these, then the Young subgroup $\operatorname{Sym}(λ)$ admits two orbits in its action on $G/H$, which are $\mathcal{S}_λ$ and its complement.
In their monograph [Erdős-Ko-Rado theorems: Algebraic Approaches. {\it Cambridge University Press}, 2016] (Problem~16.13.1), Godsil and Meagher asked whether $\mathcal{S}_λ$ is a coclique of a graph in the commutative association scheme arising from the action of $G$ on $G/H$. If such a graph exists, then they also asked whether its smallest eigenvalue is afforded by the $λ$-module.
In this paper, we initiate the study of this question by taking $λ= [n-1,1]$.
We show that the answer to this question is affirmative for the pair of groups $\left(G,H\right)$, where $G = \operatorname{Sym}(2k+1)$ and $H = \operatorname{Sym}(2) \wr \operatorname{Sym}(k)$, or $G = \operatorname{Sym}(n)$ and $H$ is one of $\operatorname{Alt}(k) \times \operatorname{Sym}(n-k),\ \operatorname{Alt}(k) \times \operatorname{Alt}(n-k)$, or $\left(\operatorname{Alt}(k)\times \operatorname{Alt}(n-k)\right) \cap \operatorname{Alt}(n)$. For the pair $(G,H) = \left(\operatorname{Sym}(2k),\operatorname{Sym}(k)\wr \operatorname{Sym}(2)\right)$, we also prove that the answer to this question of Godsil and Meagher is negative.
Tree expansions of some Lie idempotents}

We prove that the Catalan Lie idempotent $D_n(a,b)$, introduced in
[Menous {\it et al.}, Adv. Appl. Math. 51 (2013), 177] can be
refined by introducing $n$ independent parameters $a_0,\ldots,a_{n-1}$
and that the coefficient of each monomial is itself a Lie idempotent
in the descent algebra. These new idempotents are multiplicity-free
sums of subsets of the Poincaré-Birkhoff-Witt basis of the Lie module.
These results are obtained by embedding noncommutative symmetric functions into the
dual noncommutative Connes-Kreimer algebra, which also allows us to interpret, and rederive in a simpler way,
Chapoton's results on a two-parameter tree expanded series.

We apply this to the study of multiplicity-free decompositions of a Demazure module into irreducible representations of a Levi subgroup.
Hopf algebraic structures on hypergraphs and multi-complexes

Using the formalism of species and twisted objects, we introduce two structures of cointeracting bialgebras on hypergraphs, induced by two notions of induced sub-hypergraphs. We study the associated unique morphisms of cointeracting bialgebras from hypergraphs to the polynomial algebra in one indeterminate: in the first case, this gives the chromatic polynomial of a graph attached to the considered hypergraph. In the second case, we obtained Helgason's notion of chromatic polynomial of a hypergraph. We obtain Hopf-algebraic proves of results about the values of this chromatic polynomial in -1 or about its coefficients, with the help of the action of a monoid of characters. This allows to give multiplicity-free formulas for the antipodes of these objects, using various notions of acyclic orientations of hypergraphs. Mixing the two notions of induced sub-hypergraphs, we obtain a third Hopf algebra, firstly described by Aguiar and Ardila. We obtain negative results on the existence of a second coproduct making it a cointeracting bialgebra. Anyway, it is still possible to obtain a polynomial invariant from this structure, which is the chomatic polynomial described by Aval, Kharagbossian and Tanasa. We nally study Iovanov and Jaiung's Hopf algebra of multi-complexes, making it a cointeracting bialgebra which has for quotient one of the preceding cointeracting bialgebras of hypergraphs.
$P$-partitions with flags and back stable quasisymmetric functions

Stanley's theory of $(P,ω)$-partitions is a standard tool in combinatorics. It can be extended to allow for the presence of a restriction, that is a given maximal value for partitions at each vertex of the poset, as was shown by Assaf and Bergeron. Here we present a variation on their approach, which applies more generally. The enumerative side of the theory is more naturally expressed in terms of back stable quasisymmetric functions. We study the space of such functions, following the work of Lam, Lee and Shimozono on back stable symmetric functions. As applications we describe a new basis for the ring of polynomials that we call forest polynomials. Additionally we give a signed multiplicity-free expansion for any monomial expressed in the basis of slide polynomials.
