Using the notion of series parallel interval order, we propose a unified setting to describe Dyck lattices and Tamari lattices (two well known lattice structures on Catalan objects) in terms of basic notions of the theory of posets. As a consequence of our approach, we find an extremely simple proof of the fact that the Dyck order is a refinement of the Tamari one. Moreover, we provide a description of both the weak and the strong Bruhat order on 312-avoiding permutations, by recovering the proof of the fact that they are isomorphic to the Tamari and the Dyck order, respectively; our proof, which simplifies the existing ones, relies on our results on series parallel interval orders.

The coefficients of the Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials $P_{v,w}(q)$ are nonnegative integers that are upper semicontinuous on Bruhat order. Conjecturally, the same properties hold for $h$-polynomials $H_{v,w}(q)$ of local rings of Schubert varieties. This suggests a parallel between the two families of polynomials. We prove our conjectures for Grassmannians, and more generally, covexillary Schubert varieties in complete flag varieties, by deriving a combinatorial formula for $H_{v,w}(q)$. We introduce \emph{drift configurations} to formulate a new and compatible combinatorial rule for $P_{v,w}(q)$. From our rules we deduce, for these cases, the coefficient-wise inequality $P_{v,w}(q)\preceq H_{v,w}(q)$.

In theory of Coxeter groups, bigrassmannian elements are well known as elements which have precisely one left descent and precisely one right descent. In this article, we prove formulas on enumeration of bigrassmannian permutations weakly below a permutation in Bruhat order in the symmetric groups. For the proof, we use equivalent characterizations of bigrassmannian permutations by Lascoux-Schutzenberger and Reading.
Casselman's basis of Iwahori vectors and the Bruhat order

The Casselman basis of Iwahori fixed vectors in a principal series representation of a p-adic group G is dual to the standard intertwining operators. To compute it one must compute a matrix m(u,v) indexed by pairs of Weyl group elements. This matrix is upper triangular with respect to the Bruhat order. In general this matrix is difficult to compute but it is shown that certain elements have a nice expression. This is also true of the inverse matrix to m(u,v). This leads to interesting conjectures regarding the Bruhat order.
Looping of the numbers game and the alcoved hypercube

We study in detail the so-called looping case of Mozes's game of numbers, which concerns the (finite) orbits in the reflection representation of affine Weyl groups situated on the boundary of the Tits cone. We give a simple proof that all configurations in the orbit are obtainable from each other by playing the numbers game, and give a strategy for going from one configuration to another. The strategy gives rise to a partition of the finite Weyl group into finitely many graded posets, one for each extending vertex of the associated extended Dynkin diagram. These are selfdual and mutually isomorphic, and dual to the triangulation of the unit hypercube by reflecting hyperplanes, studied by many authors. Unlike the weak and Bruhat orders, the top degree is cubic in the number of vertices of the graph. We explicitly compute the Hilbert polynomial of the poset.
Sorting orders, subword complexes, Bruhat order and total positivity

In this note we construct a poset map from a Boolean algebra to the Bruhat order which unveils an interesting connection between subword complexes, sorting orders, and certain totally nonnegative spaces. This relationship gives a new proof of Björner and Wachs' result \cite{BW} that the proper part of Bruhat order is homotopy equivalent to the proper part of a Boolean algebra --- that is, to a sphere. We also obtain a geometric interpretation for sorting orders. We conclude with two new results: that the intersection of all sorting orders is the weak order, and the union of sorting orders is the Bruhat order.

Let G be the group preserving a nondegenerate sesquilinear form on a vector space V, and H a symmetric subgroup of G of the type G1 x G2. We explicitly parameterize the H-orbits in the Grassmannian of r-dimensional isotropic subspaces of V by a complete set of H-invariants. We describe the Bruhat order in terms of the majorization relationship over a diagram of these H-invariants. The inclusion order, the stabilizer, the orbit dimension, the open H-orbits, the decompositions of an H orbit into H\cap G_0 and H_0 orbits are also explicitly described.
Criteria for rational smoothness of some symmetric orbit closures

Let $G$ be a connected reductive linear algebraic group over $\C$ with an involution $θ$. Denote by $K$ the subgroup of fixed points. In certain cases, the $K$-orbits in the flag variety $G/B$ are indexed by the twisted identities $\iot = \{θ(w^{-1})w\mid w\in W\}$ in the Weyl group $W$. Under this assumption, we establish a criterion for rational smoothness of orbit closures which generalises classical results of Carrell and Peterson for Schubert varieties. That is, whether an orbit closure is rationally smooth at a given point can be determined by examining the degrees in a ``Bruhat graph'' whose vertices form a subset of $\iot$. Moreover, an orbit closure is rationally smooth everywhere if and only if its corresponding interval in the Bruhat order on $\iot$ is rank symmetric.
In the special case $K=\Sp_{2n}(\C)$, $G=\SL_{2n}(\C)$, we strengthen our criterion by showing that only the degree of a single vertex, the ``bottom one'', needs to be examined. This generalises a result of Deodhar for type $A$ Schubert varieties.

We give an explicit nonrecursive complete matching for the Hasse diagram of the strong Bruhat order of any interval in any Coxeter group. This yields a new derivation of the Mobius function, recovering a classical result due to Verma.

In any Coxeter group, the set of elements whose principal order ideals are boolean forms a simplicial poset under the Bruhat order. This simplicial poset defines a cell complex, called the boolean complex. In this paper it is shown that, for any Coxeter system of rank n, the boolean complex is homotopy equivalent to a wedge of (n-1)-dimensional spheres. The number of such spheres can be computed recursively from the unlabeled Coxeter graph, and defines a new graph invariant called the boolean number. Specific calculations of the boolean number are given for all finite and affine irreducible Coxeter systems, as well as for systems with graphs that are disconnected, complete, or stars. One implication of these results is that the boolean complex is contractible if and only if a generator of the Coxeter system is in the center of the group. of these results is that the boolean complex is contractible if and only if a generator of the Coxeter system is in the center of the group.

We give some interpretations to certain integer sequences in terms of parameters on Grand-Dyck paths and coloured noncrossing partitions, and we find some new bijections relating Grand-Dyck paths and signed pattern avoiding permutations. Next we transfer a natural distributive lattice structure on Grand-Dyck paths to coloured noncrossing partitions and signed pattern avoiding permutations, thus showing, in particular, that it is isomorphic to the structure induced by the (strong) Bruhat order on a certain set of signed pattern avoiding permutations.

We give a bijection between certain colored partitions and the elements in the quotient of an affine Weyl group modulo its Weyl group. By Bott's formula these colored partitions give rise to some partition identities. In certain types, these identities have previously appeared in the work of Bousquet-Melou-Eriksson, Eriksson-Eriksson and Reiner. In other types the identities appear to be new. For type $A_{n}$, the affine colored partitions form another family of combinatorial objects in bijection with $n+1$-core partitions and $n$-bounded partitions. Our main application is to characterize the rationally smooth Schubert varieties in the affine Grassmannians in terms of affine partitions and a generalization of Young's lattice which refines weak order and is a subposet of Bruhat order. Several of the proofs are computer assisted.
A statistic on the roots of a finite reflection group and a correspondence between the height function and Bruhat order
The action of a finite reflection group (type A) on its set of roots is understood as a permutation representation or group action. We show that this representation is an induced representation from a certain kind of parabolic subgroup. Furthermore, we use this representation to define a statistic (derived from the length function) on the set of roots. A possible application to Costas Arrays is hinted at in a proposition.
The sorting order on a Coxeter group

Let $(W,S)$ be an arbitrary Coxeter system. For each word $ω$ in the generators we define a partial order--called the {\sf $ω$-sorting order}--on the set of group elements $W_ω\subseteq W$ that occur as subwords of $ω$. We show that the $ω$-sorting order is a supersolvable join-distributive lattice and that it is strictly between the weak and Bruhat orders on the group. Moreover, the $ω$-sorting order is a "maximal lattice" in the sense that the addition of any collection of Bruhat covers results in a nonlattice. Along the way we define a class of structures called {\sf supersolvable antimatroids} and we show that these are equivalent to the class of supersolvable join-distributive lattices.

We show that the principal order ideal below an element w in the Bruhat order on involutions in a symmetric group is a Boolean lattice if and only if w avoids the patterns 4321, 45312 and 456123. Similar criteria for signed permutations are also stated. Involutions with this property are enumerated with respect to natural statistics. In this context, a bijective correspondence with certain Motzkin paths is demonstrated.
Regular cell complexes in total positivity

This paper proves a conjecture of Fomin and Shapiro that their combinatorial model for any Bruhat interval is a regular CW complex which is homeomorphic to a ball. The model consists of a stratified space which may be regarded as the link of an open cell intersected with a larger closed cell, all within the totally nonnegative part of the unipotent radical of an algebraic group. A parametrization due to Lusztig turns out to have all the requisite features to provide the attaching maps. A key ingredient is a new, readily verifiable criterion for which finite CW complexes are regular involving an interplay of topology with combinatorics.

We associate a quasisymmetric function to any Bruhat interval in a general Coxeter group. This association can be seen to be a morphism of Hopf algebras to the subalgebra of all peak functions, leading to an extension of the cd-index of convex polytopes. We show how the Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomial of the Bruhat interval can be expressed in terms of this complete cd-index and otherwise explicit combinatorially defined polynomials. In particular, we obtain the simplest closed formula for the Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials that holds in complete generality.

We prove the conjecture of A. Postnikov that (A) the number of regions in the inversion hyperplane arrangement associated with a permutation $w\in \Sn$ is at most the number of elements below $w$ in the Bruhat order, and (B) that equality holds if and only if $w$ avoids the patterns 4231, 35142, 42513 and 351624. Furthermore, assertion (A) is extended to all finite reflection groups.
A byproduct of this result and its proof is a set of inequalities relating Betti numbers of complexified inversion arrangements to Betti numbers of closed Schubert cells. Another consequence is a simple combinatorial interpretation of the chromatic polynomial of the inversion graph of a permutation which avoids the above patterns.

The aim of this article is to link Schubert varieties in the flag manifold with hyperplane arrangements. For a permutation, we construct a certain graphical hyperplane arrangement. We show that the generating function for regions of this arrangement coincides with the Poincare polynomial of the corresponding Schubert variety if and only if the Schubert variety is smooth. We give an explicit combinatorial formula for the Poincare polynomial. Our main technical tools are chordal graphs and perfect elimination orderings.

We study an action of the skew divided difference operators on the Schubert polynomials and give an explicit formula for structural constants for the Schubert polynomials in terms of certain weighted paths in the Bruhat order on the symmetric group. We also prove that, under certain assumptions, the skew divided difference operators transform the Schubert polynomials into polynomials with positive integer coefficients.
