A skew Murnaghan--Nakayama rule for Hopf dual pairs
We develop a uniform skew Murnaghan--Nakayama theory for graded Hopf dual pairs equipped with a nondegenerate Hopf pairing. Using the completed Cauchy element, its grouplike factorization, and the resulting partial contraction operators, we establish a general skew Cauchy identity together with an abstract skew Murnaghan--Nakayama rule. Specializing this framework recovers and extends the classical skew Murnaghan--Nakayama rule for symmetric functions, and yields new skew Murnaghan--Nakayama formulas in several settings, including the dual pairs $(\mathrm{NSym}, \mathrm{QSym}) $ and $(Λ^{(k)}, Λ_{(k)}) $ arising in $k$-Schur theory, as well as the type $C$ affine Grassmannian context.
As applications, we obtain generating functions for irreducible characters of Ariki--Koike algebras, including their type $A$ and type $B$ specializations, as well as Hecke--Clifford algebras and $\mathfrak q$-rook monoid algebras. We also give ribbon-tableau expansions for skew $(q,t)$-Kostka polynomials and for the entries of the inverse transition matrix, thereby answering a question of Carbonara (1998). Finally, by specializing the auxiliary alphabet $Y$ to sums of powers of primitive roots of unity, we derive a skew plethystic Murnaghan--Nakayama formula together with a Schur expansion for skew modular Schur functions; as a further consequence, we confirm Walker's conjecture (1994) by showing that if the transition from the modular Schur functions to the Schur basis is trivial in the row indexed by $λ$, then $λ$ must be a $k$-core.
The Opdam-Cherednik kernel is the Laplace transform of a positive measure
We prove that the Opdam-Cherednik kernel, also known as the nonsymmetric Opdam hypergeometric function, can be written as the Laplace transform of a positive measure supported on the convex hull of the Weyl group orbit of its argument. As a consequence, the trigonometric Dunkl intertwining operator is positivity preserving. The main ingredient in the proof is a new formula for the Opdam-Cherednik kernel as a degeneration of nonsymmetric Macdonald polynomials. As a further application, we prove majorization inequalities for Macdonald polynomials and Heckman-Opdam hypergeometric functions associated with arbitrary root systems.
Computing stable homology representations of graph configuration spaces
Configuration spaces of graphs frequently grow factorially in complexity with the number of particles they parametrize. However, for suitable families of nested graphs $G_\bullet$ with compatible symmetric group actions, Ramos and White prove that, for fixed $k$, the rational homology of the $k$\textsuperscript{th} configuration spaces of $G_\bullet$ has multiplicity stability. In the current work, we derive the stable range and use computer algebra to determine the stable representations on homology for $k=2$ and $G_\bullet$ several families of graphs, including the complete graphs, the complete bipartite graphs on $2n$ vertices, the crown graphs on $2n$ vertices, and the complete tripartite graphs on $2n+1$ vertices. We determine the stable multiplicities for certain irreducible components in the case $k=3$ and $G_\bullet$ the complete graphs.
Rank recursion for $q$-Whittaker and Macdonald operators
In this paper, we introduce and prove a set of rank recurrence relations for $q$-Whittaker and Macdonald operators. We also derive an explicit expression for the $k$-th power of the $q$-Whittaker operators in terms of the $q$-deformed binomial probability distribution, and we express the rank recurrence relations for the Macdonald operators in terms of the Cauchy determinant.
Special Matchings, Brenti's Conjecture, and the Combinatorial Invariance Conjecture
In this work, we settle a problem that dates back to the early 2000s. We provide a complete characterization of special matchings of arbitrary Bruhat intervals in Coxeter groups of type $A$ and apply this result to prove a conjecture of Brenti from 2003 concerning the computation of Kazhdan-Lusztig $R$-polynomials via special matchings. This yields new evidence in support of the Combinatorial Invariance Conjecture.
A new proof for the partition algorithm of the annihilator varieties of highest weight modules
Let $L(λ)$ be a simple highest weight module of a classical Lie algebra $\mathfrak{g}$ with highest weight $λ-ρ$, where $ρ$ is half the sum of positive roots. Joseph proved that the associated variety of the annihilator ideal of $L(λ)$ (also called the annihilator variety) is the Zariski closure of a nilpotent orbit in $\mathfrak{g}^*$. Recently, Bai--Ma--Wang introduced a partition algorithm to describe this corresponding nilpotent orbit for a given highest weight module $L(λ)$. In this paper, we present a new direct proof of Bai--Ma--Wang's partition algorithm using Sommers duality.
Matrix Discrepancy for Representations of Finite Groups
Given a finite group $G$, we prove that there exist signs $\varepsilon\in\{\pm1\}^G$ such that $$\left\| \sum_{g\in G} \varepsilon_gρ(g) \right\|\leq C\, \sqrt{|G|},$$ where $ρ$ is the left regular representation of $G$, and $C$ is a universal constant. This special case of the Matrix Spencer conjecture was posed in [BKMZ24], where it was established for simple groups.
On Terwilliger $\mathbb{F}$-algebras of factorial association schemes II
The Terwilliger algebras of association schemes over an arbitrary field $\mathbb{F}$ were called the Terwilliger $\mathbb{F}$-algebras of association schemes in [10]. In [7], He and Jiang studied the Terwilliger $\mathbb{F}$-algebras of factorial association schemes. In this paper, we continue studying the Terwilliger $\mathbb{F}$-algebras of factorial association schemes. We get all block idempotents of the Terwilliger $\mathbb{F}$-algebras of factorial association schemes. We get the $\mathbb{F}$-dimensions, the centers, the Jacobson radicals of the block algebras of the Terwilliger $\mathbb{F}$-algebras of factorial association schemes.
Negative heat capacities in spherically symmetric sectors of $d$-matrix quantum mechanics
We consider the $SO(d)$ and $O(d)$ invariant sectors of the bosonic $d$-matrix harmonic oscillator with $U(N)$ gauge symmetry. The micro-canonical degeneracy $\mathcal{Z}( N , d , k )$ for fixed energy $k$ is expressed as a pairing between an $N$-dependent vector and a $d$-dependent vector in the space of partitions of the integer $k$. This pairing formula is derived by counting invariant words in multi-matrix variables $X^i_{j,a}$, using properties of Clebsch-Gordan multiplicities (Kronecker coefficients) for the symmetric group $S_k$, Schur-Weyl duality and harmonic analysis on the homogeneous space $U(d)/SO(d)$. Analytic formulae for large $N$ and $k$ with $ k \le N $ are obtained using group integrals over $U(N)$ and $SO(d)$ (or $ O(d)$). The micro-canonical heat capacity in this regime is negative and turns positive, at a critical value $k_{\rm crit}$, due to finite $N$ modifications to the counting, thus forming what we denote as a characteristic caloric fold in the $ E $ versus $T$ curve. Data from the pairing formula is well fitted by $k_{\rm crit} \sim { N^2 \over 4 }$ for small values of $d$. A derivation of this large $N$ formula is given using a matrix model approximation and semi-classical analysis of the eigenvalue density. The large $N,d$ limit of the degeneracies reveals a key role for ribbon graph combinatorics. The caloric fold is also notably a property of black hole thermodynamics in anti-de-Sitter spaces. We propose the spherically symmetric \(SO(d)\) and \(O(d)\) invariant sectors of \(d\)-matrix quantum mechanics as tractable matrix systems for capturing key features of dual descriptions of black-hole thermodynamics.
A Comparison of cluster algebra structures arising from $i$-boxes and Demazure weaves
We compare two cluster algebras related to a positive element $\mathtt{b}$ in the braid group of finite $ADE$ type. One is the localized bosonic extension ${\widetilde{\mathbb{A}}}_\mathbb{C}(\mathtt{b})$ equipped with an initial seed arising from an admissible chain $\mathfrak{C}$ of $i$-boxes, which is deeply connected to monoidal categorification. The other is the coordinate ring $\mathbb{C}[X({\underlineΔ} {\boldsymbol{i}})]$ of the braid variety $X({\underlineΔ} {\boldsymbol{i}})$ equipped with an initial seed arising from a Demazure weave $\mathfrak{W}$, where ${\boldsymbol{i}}$ and ${\underlineΔ}$ are expression sequences of $\mathtt{b}$ and the half twist $Δ$, respectively. We explicitly construct a Demazure weave $\mathfrak{W}_{\underlineΔ}(\mathfrak{C})$ for each admissible chain $\mathfrak{C}$ associated with ${\boldsymbol{i}}$, and prove that there exists an algebra isomorphism $\varphi_{\boldsymbol{i}}\colon {\widetilde{\mathbb{A}}}_\mathbb{C}(\mathtt{b})\to\mathfrak{C}[X({\underlineΔ} {\boldsymbol{i}})]$ which is compatible with the two seeds arising from $\mathfrak{C}$ and $\mathfrak{W}_{\underlineΔ}(\mathfrak{C})$. Moreover, the isomorphism $\varphi_{\boldsymbol{i}}$ sends the PBW vectors ${\overline{\mathsf{p}}}_{\boldsymbol{i},k} \in {\widetilde{\mathbb{A}}}_\mathbb{C}(\mathtt{b})$ to the coordinates $z_k \in \mathfrak{C}[X({\underlineΔ} {\boldsymbol{i}})]$ indexed by the letters of ${\boldsymbol{i}}$. As applications, we investigate a connection between Demazure weaves and signed words via the $i$-boxes and interpret the isomorphism $\varphi_{\boldsymbol{i}}$ from the viewpoint of monoidal categorification using Hernandez--Leclerc categories.
Uncrowding the 5-Vertex Model: RSK and Crystal Structures
While the uncrowding algorithm on set-valued tableaux has long been instrumental in proving the Schur positivity of stable symmetric Grothendieck polynomials, lattice models have emerged as a modern framework for investigating symmetric functions, in particular symmetric Grothendieck polynomials. In this work, we synthesize these combinatorial and lattice-theoretic approaches by defining both the Robinson--Schensted--Knuth (RSK) correspondence and the uncrowding operation directly on a 5-vertex model of Motegi and Sakai and its subsequent reinterpretation by Buciumas, Scrimshaw, and Weber. Our lattice-based RSK formulation yields a powerful new result: the direct construction of the associated crystal structure on the states of the 5-vertex model.
Band Bases as Common Triangular Bases in Cluster Algebras from Surfaces
We consider the skein algebra of an unpunctured marked surface. Thurston previously constructed its band basis topologically. We show that this band basis coincides with the common triangular basis, which is a Kazhdan-Lusztig type basis for quantum cluster algebras analogous to the dual canonical basis of quantum groups. Our result confirms a conjecture of Thurston. It also provides new cases for the existence of the common triangular basis. In addition, we discover a phenomenon where certain unknots are arranged in configurations resembling beads on a necklace.
Presentations for categories of crystals
We give generators and relations for the monoidal categories of crystals generated by the fundamental crystals of a simple complex Lie algebra. We also spell out several small-rank examples.
On rational representations and rational group algebra of $\operatorname{GL}_2(q)$
In this article, we study rational representations of $G=\operatorname{GL}_2(q)$, where $q$ is a prime power. Let $ρ$ be an irreducible representation of $G$ over $\mathbb{Q}$. Then $ρ$ affords the character \[ Ω(χ)=m_{\mathbb{Q}}(χ)\sum_{σ\in\operatorname{Gal}(\mathbb{Q}(χ)/\mathbb{Q})}χ^σ, \] for some irreducible complex character $χ$ of $G$, where $m_{\mathbb{Q}}(χ)$ denotes the Schur index of $χ$ over $\mathbb{Q}$, with the converse also holding. We obtain a combinatorial description for the counting of inequivalent irreducible $\mathbb{Q}$-representations of $G$ of distinct degrees. Furthermore, we present a method to construct an irreducible rational matrix representation $ρ$ of $G$ affording the character $Ω(χ)$, where $χ$ is an irreducible complex character of $G$ arising from parabolic induction. Finally, using the results from the rational representations of $G$, we derive an explicit combinatorial formula, depending only on $q$, for the Wedderburn decomposition of $\mathbb{Q}G$.
The conflated expression graph for an arbitrary permutation
We show that the conflated expression graph for an arbitrary permutation has a unique minimal element and a unique maximal element, and every reduced expression sits on a maximal chain from the source to the sink. This generalizes the work of Manin-Schechtman regarding higher Bruhat orders, and gives an independent and self-contained proof of certain results in Hothem. In addition, we give explicit algorithms for elements in the top and bottom commutation classes. Given any reduced expression $ρ$, we give an explicit method for producing a maximal chain containing $ρ$.
AHA! RSK
We give a spectral realization of the Robinson-Schensted-Knuth (RSK) correspondence in terms of the representation theory of the symmetric group $S_n$ and the degenerate affine Hecke algebra (AHA) $H_n$. We view RSK, which builds a pair of standard Young tableaux from a permutation, as a special case of rectification, also known as Jeu de Taquin, which turns skew tableaux into straight ones. In this framing, the initial permutation corresponds to a skew tableau of staircase shape. To interpret this in terms of representation theory, take permutations to label weight vectors in a generic $H_n$-module $V(a_1, \ldots , a_n)$, which is isomorphic to $\mathbb{C}[S_n]$ as an $S_n$-module. Writing permutations as staircases amounts to placing these weight vectors inside the regular representation of a larger symmetric group containing $S_n$; more geometrically, we push $S_n$ to the right toward infinity so its Jucys-Murphy (JM) elements have enough room to represent the external translations of $H_n$. Then, rectification corresponds to squeezing out this extra room from the left, leaving only $S_n$ and its regular JM elements as the limit of the external translations. By expressing slides via sequences of exchanges of consecutive values inside the tableau, we can model rectification by an operator acting on the regular representation. This lets us explicitly write down the change of basis between $H_n$-weight vectors and $S_n$-weight vectors, where the latter are eigenvectors of the JM elements in $S_n$ acting both on the left and on the right, and hence labeled by pairs of standard tableaux. The resulting correspondence between the labels of the weight vectors is exactly RSK.
A higher homological approach to the $q$-characters of representations of quantum affine algebras
For any acyclic quiver $Q$ without multiple edges, we construct a monoidal category $\mathcal{R}_Q$ whose indecomposable objects are tensor products (over the base field) of finite-dimensional modules over the path algebra of $Q$. We show the existence and uniqueness up to homotopy of certain distinguished chain complexes satisfying good homological properties (higher almost split complexes) preserved under tensoring by objects in $\mathcal{R}_Q$. As a crucial ingredient for this construction, we establish the existence of a family of complete exceptional sequences in $\mathrm{mod}\,\mathbf{k}Q$ satisfying many good properties, which we believe might be of independent interest. We then prove that when $Q$ admits a height function, the Euler characteristics of (the images under certain additive functor of) these complexes coincide with the truncated $q$-characters of the standard modules in Hernandez-Leclerc's category $\mathcal{C}^{(1)}$. Applying our results to the case where the underlying graph of $Q$ is a Dynkin diagram of type $A_n, n \geq 1$, we also interpret the cluster characters of all cluster variables in the finite type cluster algebra $\mathcal{A}_Q$ as Euler characteristics of certain chain complexes in $\mathcal{R}_Q$.
Cutoff profiles for conjugacy invariant random walks on symmetric groups
We prove asymptotic equivalents for finite-level representations of symmetric groups, that is, for Young diagrams having all but finitely many boxes on their first row. We deduce that random walks on symmetric groups generated by conjugacy classes with a macroscopic number of fixed points have a Poissonian cutoff profile. We also prove that the random involution walk exhibits cutoff and find its cutoff profile. Finally, we obtain numerics for the random transposition walk on a deck of 52 cards, giving concrete estimates on the question that originally motivated Diaconis and Shahshahani.
Motivic Segre classes of Schubert cells and the connective formal group law
We use the connective formal group law to define a one-parameter ($β$-)deformation of the motivic Segre classes of Schubert cells in the $d$-step flag variety. This $β$-deformation specializes to the motivic Segre classes of Schubert cells when $β=1$ and to the Segre-Schwartz-MacPherson classes of Schubert cells when $β=0$. We define rational function representatives for the $β$-deformed classes in the $d=1$ case in terms of a solvable lattice model, and we prove a combinatorial formula for the structure constants in the $β$-deformed basis in the $d=1$ case using Knutson-Tao puzzles. The proof of the puzzle formula involves intertwiners for representations of the multi-parameter quantum group of type $\widehat{a}_2$. We show that our $β$-deformations can be viewed as quotients of canonical elements in a quotient of the equivariant algebraic cobordism ring of the cotangent bundle of the flag variety by proving that the canonical elements satisfy a GKM type condition.
Locally anti-blocking $\mathbf{g}$-polytopes for flow polytopes
Given an acyclic directed graph (DAG), the space of strength one flows is a lattice polytope called the flow polytope of the DAG. If the DAG admits an ample framing, then the flow polytope is Gorenstein and it linearly projects onto a reflexive polytope called the $\mathbf{g}$-polytope. We provide a combinatorial characterization of amply framed DAGs that have a locally anti-blocking $\mathbf{g}$-polytope, and we characterize the minimal faces of the $\mathbf{g}$-polytope containing a fixed pair of vertices. We prove in this case that the unimodular triangulation of the $\mathbf{g}$-polytope induced by the DKK triangulation of the flow polytope is a pulling triangulation, and we characterize the pulling orders that yield the DKK triangulation. To prove our results, we introduce and study coherence diagrams, a combinatorial model of coherence for amply framed DAGs with locally anti-blocking $\mathbf{g}$-polytopes. We conclude by indicating possible extensions of these results to the setting of $\mathbf{g}$-polytopes for gentle Nakayama algebras.
