Let W be a finite Coxeter group. We define its Hecke-group algebra by gluing together appropriately its group algebra and its 0-Hecke algebra. We describe in detail this algebra (dimension, several bases, conjectural presentation, combinatorial construction of simple and indecomposable projective modules, Cartan map) and give several alternative equivalent definitions (as symmetry preserving operator algebra, as poset algebra, as commutant algebra, ...).
In type A, the Hecke-group algebra can be described as the algebra generated simultaneously by the elementary transpositions and the elementary sorting operators acting on permutations. It turns out to be closely related to the monoid algebras of respectively nondecreasing functions and nondecreasing parking functions, the representation theory of which we describe as well.
This defines three towers of algebras, and we give explicitly the Grothendieck algebras and coalgebras given respectively by their induction products and their restriction coproducts. This yields some new interpretations of the classical bases of quasi-symmetric and noncommutative symmetric functions as well as some new bases.

The space $QSym_n(B)$ of $B$-quasisymmetric polynomials in 2 sets of $n$ variables was recently studied by Baumann and Hohlweg. The aim of this work is a study of the ideal $<QSym_n(B)^+>$ generated by $B$-quasisymmetric polynomials without constant term. In the case of the space $QSym_n$ of quasisymmetric polynomials in 1 set of $n$ variables, Aval, Bergeron and Bergeron proved that the dimension of the quotient of the space of polynomials by the ideal $<QSym_n^+>$ is given by Catalan numbers $C_n=\frac 1 {n+1} {2n \choose n}$. In the case of $B$-quasisymmetric polynomials, our main result is that the dimension of the analogous quotient is equal to $\frac{1}{2n+1}{3n\choose n}$, the numbers of ternary trees with $n$ nodes. The construction of a Gröbner basis for the ideal, as well as of a linear basis for the quotient are interpreted by a bijection with lattice paths. These results are finally extended to $p$ sets of variables, and the dimension is in this case $\frac{1}{pn+1}{(p+1)n\choose n}$, the numbers of $p$-ary trees with $n$ nodes.

A classical result of Artin states that the ideal generated by symmetric polynomials in $n$ variables is of codimension $n!$. The author, F. Bergeron and N. Bergeron have recently obtained a surprising analogous in the case of quasi-symmetric polynomials. In this case, the ideal is of codimension given by $C_n$, the $n$-th Catalan number. Quasi-symmetric polynomials are the invariants of a certain action of the symmetric group $S_n$ defined by F. Hivert. The aim of this work is to generalize these results to the wreath product $S_n\wr \Z_m$, also known as the generalized symmetric group $G\nm$. We first define a quasi-symmetrizing action of $G\nm$ on $\C[x_1,...,x_n]$, then obtain a description of the invariants and the codimension of the associated ideal, which is $m^n C_n$.

We associate a quasisymmetric function to any Bruhat interval in a general Coxeter group. This association can be seen to be a morphism of Hopf algebras to the subalgebra of all peak functions, leading to an extension of the cd-index of convex polytopes. We show how the Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomial of the Bruhat interval can be expressed in terms of this complete cd-index and otherwise explicit combinatorially defined polynomials. In particular, we obtain the simplest closed formula for the Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials that holds in complete generality.

The Connes-Kreimer Hopf algebra of rooted trees, its dual, and the Foissy Hopf algebra of of planar rooted trees are related to each other and to the well-known Hopf algebras of symmetric and quasi-symmetric functions via a pair of commutative diagrams. We show how this point of view can simplify computations in the Connes-Kreimer Hopf algebra and its dual, particularly for combinatorial Dyson-Schwinger equations.

We prove a q-identity in the dendriform dialgebra of colored free quasi-symmetric functions. For q=1, we recover identities due to Ebrahimi-Fard, Manchon, and Patras, in particular the noncommutative Bohnenblust-Spitzer identity.

Conditions are provided under which an endomorphism on quasisymmetric functions gives rise to a left random walk on the descent algebra which is also a lumping of a left random walk on permutations. Spectral results are also obtained. Several well-studied random walks are now realized this way: Stanley's QS-distribution results from endomorphisms given by evaluation maps, a-shuffles result from the a-th convolution power of the universal character, and the Tchebyshev operator of the second kind introduced recently by Ehrenborg and Readdy yields traditional riffle shuffles. A conjecture of Ehrenborg regarding the spectra for a family of random walks on ab-words is proven. A theorem of Stembridge from the theory of enriched P-partitions is also recovered as a special case.

Via duality of Hopf algebras, there is a direct association between peak quasisymmetric functions and enumeration of chains in Eulerian posets. We study this association explicitly, showing that the notion of $\cd$-index, long studied in the context of convex polytopes and Eulerian posets, arises as the dual basis to a natural basis of peak quasisymmetric functions introduced by Stembridge. Thus Eulerian posets having a nonnegative $\cd$-index (for example, face lattices of convex polytopes) correspond to peak quasisymmetric functions having a nonnegative representation in terms of this basis. We diagonalize the operator that associates the basis of descent sets for all quasisymmetric functions to that of peak sets for the algebra of peak functions, and study the $g$-polynomial for Eulerian posets as an algebra homomorphism.
The forgotten monoid

We study properties of the forgotten monoid which appeared in work of Lascoux and Schutzenberger and recently resurfaced in the construction of dual equivalence graphs by Assaf. In particular, we provide an explicit characterization of the forgotten classes in terms of inversion numbers and show that there are n^2-3n+4 forgotten classes in the symmetric group S_n. Each forgotten class contains a canonical element that can be characterized by pattern avoidance. We also show that the sum of Gessel's quasi-symmetric functions over a forgotten class is a 0-1 sum of ribbon-Schur functions.

Motivated by work of Buch on set-valued tableaux in relation to the K-theory of the Grassmannian, we study six combinatorial Hopf algebras. These Hopf algebras can be thought of as K-theoretic analogues of the by now classical ``square'' of Hopf algebras consisting of symmetric functions, quasisymmetric functions, noncommutative symmetric functions and the Malvenuto-Reutenauer Hopf algebra of permutations. In addition, we develop a theory of set-valued P-partitions and study three new families of symmetric functions which are weight generating functions of reverse plane partitions, weak set-valued tableaux and valued-set tableaux.

A new Z-basis for the space of quasisymmetric functions (QSym, for short) is presented. It is shown to have nonnegative structure constants, and several interesting properties relative to the space of quasisymmetric functions associated to matroids by the Hopf algebra morphism (F) of Billera, Jia, and Reiner. In particular, for loopless matroids, this basis reflects the grading by matroid rank, as well as by the size of the ground set. It is shown that the morphism F is injective on the set of rank two matroids, and that decomposability of the quasisymmetric function of a rank two matroid mirrors the decomposability of its base polytope. An affirmative answer is given to the Hilbert basis question raised by Billera, Jia, and Reiner.
The Hopf algebras of type B quasisymmetric functions and peak functions
We show that with the appropriate choice of coproduct, the type B quasisymmetric functions form a Hopf algebra, and the recently introduced type B peak functions form a Hopf subalgebra.

The colored quasisymmetric functions, like the classic quasisymmetric functions, are known to form a Hopf algebra with a natural peak subalgebra. We show how these algebras arise as the image of the algebra of colored posets. To effect this approach we introduce colored analogs of $P$-partitions and enriched $P$-partitions. We also frame our results in terms of Aguiar, Bergeron, and Sottile's theory of combinatorial Hopf algebras and its colored analog.

We review the relation between the Hopf algebra QSym of quasi-symmetric functions and the multiple zeta values, and then discuss a commutative diagram involving the Hopf algebra Sym of symmetric functions, the Hopf algebra dual NSym of QSym, and the Hopf algebras of rooted trees and planar rooted trees as defined by Kreimer and Foissy respectively.

We show that certain differences of products of $P$-partition generating functions are positive in the basis of fundamental quasi-symmetric functions L_α. This result interpolates between recent Schur positivity and monomial positivity results of the same flavor. We study the case of chains in detail, introducing certain ``cell transfer'' operations on compositions and an interesting related ``L-positivity'' poset. We introduce and study quasi-symmetric functions called ``wave Schur functions'' and use them to establish, in the case of chains, that the difference of products we study is itself equal to a single generating function K_{P,θ} for a labeled poset (P,θ). In the course of our investigations we establish some factorization properties of the ring of quasisymmetric functions.
Representation theories of some towers of algebras related to the symmetric groups and their Hecke algebras
We study the representation theory of three towers of algebras which are related to the symmetric groups and their Hecke algebras. The first one is constructed as the algebras generated simultaneously by the elementary transpositions and the elementary sorting operators acting on permutations. The two others are the monoid algebras of nondecreasing functions and nondecreasing parking functions. For these three towers, we describe the structure of simple and indecomposable projective modules, together with the Cartan map. The Grothendieck algebras and coalgebras given respectively by the induction product and the restriction coproduct are also given explicitly. This yields some new interpretations of the classical bases of quasi-symmetric and noncommutative symmetric functions as well as some new bases.
A quasisymmetric function for matroids

A new isomorphism invariant of matroids is introduced, in the form of a quasisymmetric function. This invariant (1) defines a Hopf morphism from the Hopf algebra of matroids to the quasisymmetric functions, which is surjective if one uses rational coefficients, (2) is a multivariate generating function for integer weight vectors that give minimum total weight to a unique base of the matroid, (3) is equivalent, via the Hopf antipode, to a generating function for integer weight vectors which keeps track of how many bases minimize the total weight, (4) behaves simply under matroid duality, (5) has a simple expansion in terms of P-partition enumerators, and (6) is a valuation on decompositions of matroid base polytopes.
This last property leads to an interesting application: it can sometimes be used to prove that a matroid base polytope has no decompositions into smaller matroid base polytopes. Existence of such decompositions is a subtle issue arising in work of Lafforgue, where lack of such a decomposition implies the matroid has only a finite number of realizations up to projective equivalence.
Some relational structures with polynomial growth and their associated algebras
The profile of a relational structure R is the function phi_R which counts for every integer n the number, possibly infinite, phi_R(n) of substructures of R induced on the n-element subsets, isomorphic substructures being identified. Several graded algebras can be associated with R in such a way that the profile of R is simply the Hilbert function. An example of such graded algebra is the age algebra introduced by P.~J.~Cameron.
In this paper, we give a closer look at this association, particularly when the relational structure R decomposes into finitely many monomorphic components. In this case, several well-studied graded commutative algebras (e.g. the invariant ring of a finite permutation group, the ring of quasi-symmetric polynomials) are isomorphic to some age algebras. Also, phi_R is a quasi-polynomial, this supporting the conjecture that, with mild assumptions on R, phi_R is a quasi-polynomial when it is bounded by some polynomial.
Enriched $P$-partitions and peak algebras (extended abstract)
We generalize Stembridge's enriched $P$-partitions and use this theory to outline the structure of peak algebras for the symmetric group and the hyperoctahedral group. Whereas Stembridge's enriched $P$-partitions are related to quasisymmetric functions (the coalgebra dual to Solomon's type A descent algebra), our generalized enriched $P$-partitions are related to type B quasisymmetric functions (the coalgebra dual to Solomon's type B descent algebra). Using these functions, we explore three different peak algebras: the "interior" and "left" peak algebras of type A, and a new type B peak algebra. Our results specialize to results for commutative peak algebras as well.

We uncover the structure of the space of symmetric functions in non-commutative variables by showing that the underlined Hopf algebra is both free and co-free. We also introduce the Hopf algebra of quasi-symmetric functions in non-commutative variables and define the product and coproduct on the monomial basis of this space and show that this Hopf algebra is free and cofree. In the process of looking for bases which generate the space we define orders on the set partitions and set compositions which allow us to define bases which have simple and natural rules for the product of basis elements.
