The Betti polynomials of powers of an ideal
Published • View Publication • BIB
For an ideal $I$ in a regular local ring or a graded ideal $I$ in the polynomial ring we study the limiting behavior of the Betti numbers of S/I^k as k goes to infinity. By Kodiyalam's result it is known that in each homological degree the Betti number is a polynomial for large k. We call these polynomials the Kodiyalam polynomials and encode the limiting behavior in their generating polynomial. It is shown that the limiting behavior depends only on the coefficients on the Kodiyalam polynomials in the highest possible degree. For these we exhibit lower bounds in special cases and conjecture that the bounds are valid in general. We also show that the Kodiyalam polynomials have weakly descending degrees and identify a situation where the polynomials have all highest possible degree.

$q,t$-Catalan numbers and generators for the radical ideal defining the diagonal locus of $(\C^2)^n$
Published in Electronic Journal of Combinatorics 18 (2011), no. 1 • View Publication • BIB
Let $I$ be the ideal generated by alternating polynomials in two sets of $n$ variables. Haiman proved that the $q,t$-Catalan number is the Hilbert series of the graded vector space $M(=\bigoplus_{d_1,d_2}M_{d_1,d_2})$ spanned by a minimal set of generators for $I$. In this paper we give simple upper bounds on $\text{dim}M_{d_1, d_2}$ in terms of partition numbers, and find all bi-degrees $(d_1,d_2)$ such that $\dim M_{d_1, d_2}$ achieve the upper bounds. For such bi-degrees, we also find explicit bases for $M_{d_1, d_2}$. The main idea is to define and study a nontrivial linear map from $M$ to a polynomial ring $\C[ρ_1, ρ_2,...]$.
Stanley decompositions and Hilbert depth in the Koszul complex
Published in J. Commut. Algebra 2 (2010), 327-357 • View Publication • BIB
Stanley decompositions of multigraded modules $M$ over polynomials rings have been discussed intensively in recent years. There is a natural notion of depth that goes with a Stanley decomposition, called the Stanley depth. Stanley conjectured that the Stanley depth of a module $M$ is always at least the (classical) depth of $M$. In this paper we introduce a weaker type of decomposition, which we call Hilbert decomposition, since it only depends on the Hilbert function of $M$, and an analogous notion of depth, called Hilbert depth. Since Stanley decompositions are Hilbert decompositions, the latter set upper bounds to the existence of Stanley decompositions. The advantage of Hilbert decompositions is that they are easier to find. We test our new notion on the syzygy modules of the residue class field of $K[X_1,...,X_n]$ (as usual identified with $K$). Writing $M(n,k)$ for the $k$-th syzygy module, we show that theHilbert depth of M(n,1) is $\lfloor(n+1)/2\rfloor$. Furthermore, we show that, for $n > k \ge \lfloor n/2\rfloor$, the Hilbert depth of $M(n,k)$ is equal to $n-1$. We conjecture that the same holds for the Stanley depth. For the range $n/2 > k > 1$, it seems impossible to come up with a compact formula for the Hilbert depth. Instead, we provide very precise asymptotic results as $n$ becomes large.

Gotzmann Edge Ideals
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let P = k[x_1, ..., x_n] be the polynomial ring in n variables. A homogeneous ideal I of P generated in degree d is called Gotzmann if it has the smallest possible Hilbert function out of all homogeneous ideals with the same dimension in degree d. The edge ideal of a simple graph G on vertices x_1, ..., x_n is the quadratic square-free monomial ideal generated by all x_i x_j where {x_i,x_j} is an edge of G. The only edge ideals that are Gotzmann are those edge ideals corresponding to star graphs.
Colorings of hypergraphs, perfect graphs, and associated primes of powers of monomial ideals
Published • View Publication • BIB
There is a natural one-to-one correspondence between squarefree monomial ideals and finite simple hypergraphs via the cover ideal construction. Let H be a finite simple hypergraph, and let J = J(H) be its cover ideal in a polynomial ring R. We give an explicit description of all associated primes of R/J^s, for any power J^s of J, in terms of the coloring properties of hypergraphs arising from H. We also give an algebraic method for determining the chromatic number of H, proving that it is equivalent to a monomial ideal membership problem involving powers of J. Our work yields two new purely algebraic characterizations of perfect graphs, independent of the Strong Perfect Graph Theorem; the first characterization is in terms of the sets Ass(R/J^s), while the second characterization is in terms of the saturated chain condition for associated primes.

Exterior depth and exterior generic annihilator numbers
We study the exterior depth of an $E$-module and its exterior generic annihilator numbers. For the exterior depth of a squarefree $E$-module we show how it relates to the symmetric depth of the corresponding $S$-module and classify those simplicial complexes having a particular exterior depth in terms of their exterior shifting. We define exterior annihilator numbers analogously to the annihilator numbers over the polynomial ring introduced by Trung and Conca, Herzog and Hibi. In addition to a combinatorial interpretation of the annihilator numbers we show how they are related to the symmetric Betti numbers and the Cartan-Betti numbers, respectively. We finally conclude with an example which shows that neither the symmetric nor the exterior generic annihilator numbers are minimal among the annihilator numbers with respect to a sequence.

Combinatorics and geometry of power ideals
Published • View Publication • BIB
We investigate ideals in a polynomial ring which are generated by powers of linear forms. Such ideals are closely related to the theories of fat point ideals, Cox rings, and box splines. We pay special attention to a family of power ideals that arises naturally from a hyperplane arrangement A. We prove that their Hilbert series are determined by the combinatorics of A, and can be computed from its Tutte polynomial. We also obtain formulas for the Hilbert series of the resulting fat point ideals and zonotopal Cox rings. Our work unifies and generalizes results due to Dahmen-Micchelli, Holtz-Ron, Postnikov-Shapiro-Shapiro, and Sturmfels-Xu, among others. It also settles a conjecture of Holtz-Ron on the spline interpolation of functions on the interior lattice points of a zonotope.

Topological Cohen-Macaulay criteria for monomial ideals
Published • View Publication • BIB
Scattered over the past few years have been several occurrences of simplicial complexes whose topological behavior characterize the Cohen-Macaulay property for quotients of polynomial rings by arbitrary (not necessarily squarefree) monomial ideals. The purpose of this survey is to gather the developments into one location, with self-contained proofs, including direct combinatorial topological connections between them.

Equivariant structure constants for ordinary and weighted projective space
We compute the integral torus-equivariant cohomology ring for weighted projective space for two different torus actions by embedding the cohomology in a sum of polynomial rings $\oplus_{i=0}^n \Z[t_1, t_2,..., t_n]$. One torus action gives a result complementing that of Bahri, Franz, and Ray. For the other torus action, each basis class for weighted projective space is a multiple of the basis class for ordinary projective space; we identify each multiple explicitly. We also give a simple formula for the structure constants of the equivariant cohomology ring of ordinary projective space in terms of the basis of Schubert classes, as a sequence of divided difference operators applied to a specific polynomial.

On the ring of approximation triples attached to a class of extremal real numbers
Published in Indag. Math., vol. 19 (2008), 299-324 • View Publication • BIB
We attach a ring of sequences to each number from a certain class of extremal real numbers, and we study the properties of this ring both from an analytic point of view by exhibiting elements with specific behaviors, and also from an algebraic point of view by identifying it with the quotient of a polynomial ring over Q. The link between these points of view relies on combinatorial results of independent interest. We apply this theory to estimate the dimension of a certain space of sequences satisfying prescribed growth constrains.

The Auslander-Reiten translate on monomial quotient rings
Published in Advances in Mathematics 226, no. 1, (2011), p. 952-991 • View Publication • BIB
For a multidegree t in N^n, E.Miller has defined a category of positively t-determined modules over the polynomial ring S in n variables. We consider the Auslander-Reiten translate, Na_t, on the (derived) category of such modules. A monomial ideal I is positively t-determined if every generator x^a has a \leq t. We compute the multigraded cohomology- and betti spaces of Na_t^k(S/I) for every iterate k, and also the S-module structure of these cohomology modules. This comprehensively generalizes results of Hochster and Gräbe on local cohomology of Stanley-Reisner rings.

Tropical and Ordinary Convexity Combined
Published • View Publication • BIB
A polytrope is a tropical polytope which at the same time is convex in the ordinary sense. A $d$-dimensional polytrope turns out to be a tropical simplex, that is, it is the tropical convex hull of $d+1$ points. This statement is equivalent to the known fact that the Segre product of two full polynomial rings (over some field $K$) has the Gorenstein property if and only if the factors are generated by the same number of indeterminates. The combinatorial types of polytropes up to dimension three are classified.
An Algorithm for Finding Symmetric Gröbner Bases in Infinite Dimensional Rings
Published • View Publication • BIB
A \textit{symmetric ideal} $I \subseteq R = K[x_1,x_2,...]$ is an ideal that is invariant under the natural action of the infinite symmetric group. We give an explicit algorithm to find Gröbner bases for symmetric ideals in the infinite dimensional polynomial ring $R$. This allows for symbolic computation in a new class of rings. In particular, we solve the ideal membership problem for symmetric ideals of $R$.

A weighted graph problem from commutative algebra
We give an especially simple proof of a theorem in graph theory that forms the key part of the solution to a problem in commutative algebra, on how to characterize the integral closure of a polynomial ring generated by quadratic monomials.

Glicci simplicial complexes
Published • View Publication • BIB
One of the main open questions in liaison theory is whether every homogeneous Cohen-Macaulay ideal in a polynomial ring is glicci, i.e. if it is in the G-liaison class of a complete intersection. We give an affirmative answer to this question for Stanley-Reisner ideals defined by simplicial complexes that are weakly vertex-decomposable. This class of complexes includes matroid, shifted and Gorenstein complexes respectively. Moreover, we construct a simplicial complex which shows that the property of being glicci depends on the characteristic of the base field. As an application of our methods we establish new evidence for two conjectures of Stanley on partitionable complexes and on Stanley decompositions.

Betti numbers and shifts in minimal graded free resolutions
Published in Illinois J. Math. 54 (2010), no. 2, 449-467 • View Publication • BIB
Let S be a polynomial ring and R=S/I where I is a graded ideal of S. The Multiplicity Conjecture of Herzog, Huneke, and Srinivasan which was recently proved using the Boij-Soederberg theory states that the multiplicity of R is bounded above by a function of the maximal shifts in the minimal graded free resolution of R over S as well as bounded below by a function of the minimal shifts if R is Cohen-Macaulay. In this paper we study the related problem to show that the total Betti-numbers of R are also bounded above by a function of the shifts in the minimal graded free resolution of R as well as bounded below by another function of the shifts if R is Cohen-Macaulay. We also discuss the cases when these bounds are sharp.

Hilbert functions of d-regular ideals
Published • View Publication • BIB
In the present paper, we characterize all possible Hilbert functions of graded ideals in a polynomial ring whose regularity is smaller than or equal to $d$, where $d$ is a positive integer. In addition, we prove the following result which is a generalization of Bigatti, Hulett and Pardue's result: Let $p \geq 0$ and $d>0$ be integers. If the base field is a field of characteristic 0 and there is a graded ideal $I$ whose projective dimension $\mathrm{proj\ dim}(I)$ is smaller than or equal to $p$ and whose regularity $\mathrm{reg}(I)$ is smaller than or equal to $d$, then there exists a monomial ideal $L$ having the maximal graded Betti numbers among graded ideals $J$ which have the same Hilbert function as $I$ and which satisfy $\mathrm{proj dim}(J) \leq p$ and $\mathrm{reg}(J) \leq d$. We also prove the same fact for squarefree monomial ideals. The main methods for proofs are generic initial ideals and combinatorics on strongly stable ideals.

Monomial ideals arising from flag complexes whose generic initial ideals do not depend on term orders
We will study monomial ideals $I$ in the exterior algebra as well as in the polynomial ring whose generic initial ideal is constant for all term orders up to permutations of variables. First, in the exterior algebra, we determine all graphs and all flag complexes whose exterior face ideal satisfies the above condition. Second, in the polynomial ring, it will be shown that the generic initial ideal $\gin_σ(I(G))$ of the edge ideal $I(G)$ of a graph $G$ is constant for all term orders $σ$ up to permutations of variables if and only if $G$ is a complete bipartite graph.

Blowup algebras of square-free monomial ideals and some links to combinatorial optimization problems
Published in Rocky Mountain J. Math. 39 (2009), no. 1, 71--102 • View Publication • BIB
Let I=(x^{v_1},...,x^{v_q} be a square-free monomial ideal of a polynomial ring K[x_1,...,x_n] over an arbitrary field K and let A be the incidence matrix with column vectors {v_1},...,{v_q}. We will establish some connections between algebraic properties of certain graded algebras associated to I and combinatorial optimization properties of certain polyhedrons and clutters associated to A and I respectively. Some applications to Rees algebras and combinatorial optimization are presented. We study a conjecture of Conforti and Cornuéjols using an algebraic approach.
