Brundan-Kazhdan-Lusztig and super duality conjectures
Published in Publ. RIMS 44 (2008), 1219--1272. • View Publication • BIB
We formulate a general super duality conjecture on connections between parabolic categories O of modules over Lie superalgebras and Lie algebras of type A, based on a Fock space formalism of their Kazhdan-Lusztig theories which was initiated by Brundan. We show that the Brundan-Kazhdan-Lusztig (BKL) polynomials for Lie superalgebra gl(m|n) in our parabolic setup can be identified with the usual parabolic Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials. We establish some special cases of the BKL conjecture on the parabolic category O of gl(m|n)-modules and additional results which support the BKL conjecture and super duality conjecture.
Bernstein-Szego Polynomials Associated with Root Systems
Published in Bull. London Math. Soc. 39 (2007), 837-847 • View Publication • BIB
We introduce multivariate generalizations of the Bernstein-Szego polynomials, which are associated to the root systems of the complex simple Lie algebras. The multivariate polynomials in question generalize Macdonald's Hall-Littlewood polynomials associated with root systems. For the root system of type A1 (corresponding to the Lie algebra SL (2;C)) the classic Bernstein-Szego polynomials are recovered.

Mutant knots and intersection graphs
Published in Algebr. Geom. Topol. 7 (2007) 1579-1598 • View Publication • BIB
We prove that if a finite order knot invariant does not distinguish mutant knots, then the corresponding weight system depends on the intersection graph of a chord diagram rather than on the diagram itself. The converse statement is easy and well known. We discuss relationship between our results and certain Lie algebra weight systems.

On the S_n-module structure of the noncommutative harmonics
Published in Journal of Combinatorial Theory, Series A, Volume 115, Issue 6, August 2008, pages 1077-1085. • View Publication • BIB
Using a noncommutative analog of Chevalley's decomposition of polynomials into symmetric polynomials times coinvariants due to Bergeron, Reutenauer, Rosas, and Zabrocki we compute the graded Frobenius series for their two sets of noncommutative harmonics with respect to the left action of the symmetric group (acting on variables). We use these results to derive the Frobenius series for the enveloping algebra of the derived free Lie algebra in n variables.

Littlewood-Richardson polynomials
Published in J. Algebra 321 (2009), 3450-3468. • View Publication • BIB
We introduce a family of rings of symmetric functions depending on an infinite sequence of parameters. A distinguished basis of such a ring is comprised by analogues of the Schur functions. The corresponding structure coefficients are polynomials in the parameters which we call the Littlewood-Richardson polynomials. We give a combinatorial rule for their calculation by modifying an earlier result of B. Sagan and the author. The new rule provides a formula for these polynomials which is manifestly positive in the sense of W. Graham. We apply this formula for the calculation of the product of equivariant Schubert classes on Grassmannians which implies a stability property of the structure coefficients. The first manifestly positive formula for such an expansion was given by A. Knutson and T. Tao by using combinatorics of puzzles while the stability property was not apparent from that formula. We also use the Littlewood-Richardson polynomials to describe the multiplication rule in the algebra of the Casimir elements for the general linear Lie algebra in the basis of the quantum immanants constructed by A. Okounkov and G. Olshanski.

Universal graded characters and limit of Lusztig $q$-analogues
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let G be a symplectic or orthogonal complex Lie group with Lie algebra g. As a G-module, the decomposition of the symmetric algebra S(g) into its irreducible components can be explicitely obtained by using identities due to Littlewood. We show that the multiplicities appearing in the decomposition of the k-th graded component of S(g) do not depend on the rank n of g providing n is sufficiently large. Thanks to a classical result by Kostant, we establish a similar result for the k-th graded component of the space H(g) of G-harmonic polynomials. These stabilization properties are equivalent to the existence of a limit in infinitely many variables for the graded characters associated to S(g) and H(g). The limits so obtained are formal series with coefficients in the ring of universal characters introduced by Koike and Terada. From Hesselink expression of the graded character of harmonics, the coefficient of degree k in the Lusztig q-analogue associated to the partition lambda and the weight 0 thus stablizes for n sufficiently large. By using Morris-type recurrence formulas, we prove that this is also true for the polynomials $K_{λ,μ}^{g}(q)$ where mu is a nonempty fixed partition. This can be reformulated in terms of a stability property for the dimension of the components of the Brylinski-Kostant filtration. We also associate to each pair of partitions (lambda, mu) formal series $K_{λ,μ}^{so}(q)$ and $K_{λ,μ}^{sp}(q)$, which can be regarded as natural limit of the Lusztig q-analogues. One gives a duality property for these limits and obtains simple expressions when lambda is a row or a column partition.

A definition of the crystal commutor using Kashiwara's involution
Published • View Publication • BIB
Henriques and Kamnitzer defined and studied a commutor for the category of crystals of a finite dimentional complex reductive Lie algebra. We show that the action of this commutor on highest weight elements can be expressed very simply using Kashiwara's involution on the Verma crystal.

The numbers game, geometric representations of Coxeter groups, and Dynkin diagram classification results
The numbers game is a one-player game played on a finite simple graph with certain ``amplitudes'' assigned to its edges and with an initial assignment of real numbers to its nodes. The moves of the game successively transform the numbers at the nodes using the amplitudes in a certain way. This game has been studied previously by Proctor, Mozes, Bjorner, Eriksson, and Wildberger. We show that those connected such graphs for which the numbers game meets a certain finiteness requirement are precisely the Dynkin diagrams associated with the finite-dimensional complex simple Lie algebras. As a consequence of our proof we obtain the classifications of the finite-dimensional Kac-Moody algebras and of the finite Weyl groups. We use Coxeter group theory to establish a more general result that applies to Eriksson's E-games: an E-game meets the finiteness requirement if and only if a naturally associated Coxeter group is finite. To prove this and some other finiteness results we further develop Eriksson's theory of a geometric representation of Coxeter groups and observe some curious differences of this representation from the standard geometric representation.

Sur le groupe d'interpolation
We study the interpolation group whose elements are suitable pairs of formal power series. This group has a faithful representation into infinite lower triangular matrices and carries thus a natural structure as a Lie group. The matrix exponential between its Lie algebra and its matrix representation gives rise to a function with interesting properties extending the usual exponential function to two variables (which are formal power series) We finish with an application to enumerative combinatorics and the description of an algebra which generalizes the interpolation group.

A note on exponents vs root heights for complex simple Lie algebras
Published • View Publication • BIB
We give an elementary combinatorial proof of a special case of a result due to Bazlov and Ion concerning the Fourier coefficients of the Cherednik kernel. This can be used to give yet another proof of the classical fact that for a complex simple Lie algebra, the partition formed by its exponents is dual to that formed by the numbers of positive roots at each height.

A Lie theoretic approach to renormalization
Published in Commun.Math.Phys.276:519-549,2007 • View Publication • BIB
Motivated by recent work of Connes and Marcolli, based on the Connes-Kreimer approach to renormalization, we augment the latter by a combinatorial, Lie algebraic point of view. Our results rely both on the properties of the Dynkin idempotent, one of the fundamental Lie idempotents in the theory of free Lie algebras, and on properties of Hopf algebras encapsulated in the notion of associated descent algebras. Besides leading very directly to proofs of the main combinatorial aspects of the renormalization procedures, the new techniques give rise to an algebraic approach to the Galois theory of renormalization. In particular, they do not depend on the geometry underlying the case of dimensional regularization and the Riemann-Hilbert correspondence. This is illustrated with a discussion of the BPHZ renormalization scheme.

Symmetric functions, parabolic category O and the Springer fiber
Published in Duke Math. J. 143 (2008), 41-79. • View Publication • BIB
We prove that the center of a regular block of parabolic category O for the general linear Lie algebra is isomorphic to the cohomology algebra of a corresponding Springer fiber. This was conjectured by Khovanov. We also find presentations for the centers of singular blocks, which are cohomology algebras of Spaltenstein varieties.
Transitive factorizations of free partially commutative monoids and Lie algebras
Published in Discrete Mathematics 246, Issue 1-3 (2002) 83 - 97 • View Publication • BIB
Let $\M(A,θ)$ be a free partially commutative monoid. We give here a necessary and sufficient condition on a subalphabet $B\subset A$ such that the right factor of a bisection $\M(A,θ)=\M(B,θ\_B).T$ be also partially commutative free. This extends strictly the (classical) elimination theory on partial commutations and allows to construct new factorizations of $\M(A,θ)$ and associated bases of $L\_K(A,θ)$.

The Tetrahedron algebra and its finite-dimensional irreducible modules
Published • View Publication • BIB
Recently Terwilliger and the present author found a presentation for the three-point $\mathfrak{sl}_2$ loop algebra via generators and relations. To obtain this presentation we defined a Lie algebra $\boxtimes$ by generators and relations and displayed an isomorphism from $\boxtimes$ to the three-point $\mathfrak{sl}_2$ loop algebra. In this paper we classify the finite-dimensional irreducible $\boxtimes$-modules.

Full heaps and representations of affine Kac--Moody algebras
We give a combinatorial construction, not involving a presentation, of almost all untwisted affine Kac--Moody algebras modulo their one-dimensional centres in terms of signed raising and lowering operators on a certain distributive lattice ${\Cal B}$. The lattice ${\Cal B}$ is constructed combinatorially as a set of ideals of a ``full heap'' over the Dynkin diagram, which leads to a kind of categorification of the positive roots for the Kac--Moody algebra. The lattice ${\Cal B}$ is also a crystal in the sense of Kashiwara, and its span affords representations of the associated quantum affine algebra and affine Weyl group. There are analogues of these results for two infinite families of twisted affine Kac--Moody algebras, which we hope to treat more fully elsewhere. By restriction, we obtain combinatorial constructions of the finite dimensional simple Lie algebras over $\complex$, except those of types $E_8$, $F_4$ and $G_2$. The Chevalley basis corresponding to an arbitrary orientation of the Dynkin diagram is then represented explicitly by raising and lowering operators. We also obtain combinatorial constructions of the spin modules for Lie algebras of types $B$ and $D$, which avoid Clifford algebras, and in which the action of Chevalley bases on the canonical bases of the modules may be explicitly calculated.

Note on Laplace operators and homologies of a few Lie subalgebras of $A_1^{(1)}$
We investigate a spectrum of positive self-adjoint operator $\Gk$ (Laplace operator) acting in the external complexes of some interesting subalgebras $\Lk$ of Lie algebra $A_1^{(1)}$. We obtain an explicit formula for the action of $\G_k$. This formula is used to compute the homology of $\Lk$ with trivial coefficients for $k=-1,0,1,2$. In these cases we show that a spectrum of $\G_k$ is the set of non-negative integers with a finite multiplicity of each eigenvalue for $k=-1,0$, infinite one for $k=1,2$. We also found the generating functions for the multiplicities of $\G_k$-eigenvalues (in appropriate sense for $\G_1$ and $\G_2$).

Filtering bases and cohomology of nilpotent subalgebras of Witt and $\widetilde{sl}_2$ Lie algebras
Published • View Publication • BIB
We study the cohomology with trivial coefficients of Lie algebras L_k of the polynomial vector fields on the line with zero $k$-jet, (k>=1), and the cohomology of the similar subalgebras {L}_k of the polynomial loops algebra $\widetilde{sl}_2$. In both cases we construct the special bases (filtering bases) in the external complexes of these algebras. A spectral sequence based on this construction allows to completely find the cohomology of L_k and {L}_k. We also apply the filtering bases to find the spectral resolution of the Laplace operators for algebras L_1 and L_0, and obtain explicit formulas for the representing cycles of homologies for algebras L_k and {L}_k by means of the Schur polynomials.

Crystal bases and combinatorics of infinite rank quantum groups
Published • View Publication • BIB
The tensor powers of the vector representation associated to an infinite rank quantum group decompose into irreducible components with multiplicities independant of the infinite root system considered. Although the irreducible modules obtained in this way are not of highest weight, they admit a crystal basis and a canonical basis. This permits in particular to obtain for each familly of classical Lie algebras a Robinson-Schensted correspondence on biwords defined on infinite alphabets. We then depict a structure of bi-crystal on these bi-words. This RS-correspondence yields also a plactic algebra and plactic Schur functions distinct for each infinite root system. Surprisingly, the algebras spanned by these plactic Schur functions are all isomorphic to the algebra of symmetric functions.

On the local structure of doubly laced crystals

Let $\mathfrak{g}$ be a Lie algebra all of whose regular subalgebras of rank 2 are type $A_{1}\times A_{1}$, $A_{2}$, or $C_{2}$, and let $B$ be a crystal graph corresponding to a representation of $\mathfrak{g}$. We explicitly describe the local structure of $B$, confirming a conjecture of Stembridge.

The Horn recursion for Schur P- and Q- functions: Extended Abstract
A consequence of work of Klyachko and of Knutson-Tao is the Horn recursion to determine when a Littlewood-Richardson coefficient is non-zero. Briefly, a Littlewood-Richardson coefficient is non-zero if and only if it satisfies a collection of Horn inequalities which are indexed by smaller non-zero Littlewood-Richardson coefficients. There are similar Littlewood-Richardson numbers for Schur P- and Q- functions. Using a mixture of combinatorics of root systems, combinatorial linear algebra in Lie algebras, and the geometry of certain cominuscule flag varieties, we give Horn recursions to determine when these other Littlewood-Richardson numbers are non-zero. Our inequalities come from the usual Littlewood-Richardson numbers, and while we give two very different Horn recursions, they have the same sets of solutions. Another combinatorial by-product of this work is a new Horn-type recursion for the usual Littlewood-Richardson coefficients.
