The goal of this paper is to give a geometric construction of the Bethe algebra (of Hamiltonians) of a Gaudin model associated to a simple Lie algebra. More precisely, in this paper a quantum integrable model is assigned to a weighted arrangement of affine hyperplanes. We show (under certain assumptions) that the algebra of Hamiltonians of the model is isomorphic to the algebra of functions on the critical set of the corresponding master function. For a discriminantal arrangement we show (under certain assumptions) that the symmetric part of the algebra of Hamiltonians is isomorphic to the Bethe algebra of the corresponding Gaudin model. It is expected that this correspondence holds in general (without the assumptions). As a byproduct of constructions we show that in a Gaudin model (associated to an arbitrary simple Lie algebra), the Bethe vector, corresponding to an isolated critical point of the master function, is nonzero.

The Lie Algebraic Significance of Symmetric Informationally Complete Measurements

Examples of symmetric informationally complete positive operator valued measures (SIC-POVMs) have been constructed in every dimension less than or equal to 67. However, it remains an open question whether they exist in all finite dimensions. A SIC-POVM is usually thought of as a highly symmetric structure in quantum state space. However, its elements can equally well be regarded as a basis for the Lie algebra gl(d,C). In this paper we examine the resulting structure constants, which are calculated from the traces of the triple products of the SIC-POVM elements and which, it turns out, characterize the SIC-POVM up to unitary equivalence. We show that the structure constants have numerous remarkable properties. In particular we show that the existence of a SIC-POVM in dimension d is equivalent to the existence of a certain structure in the adjoint representation of gl(d,C). We hope that transforming the problem in this way, from a question about quantum state space to a question about Lie algebras, may help to make the existence problem tractable.

We prove a closed character formula for the symmetric powers $S^N V(λ)$ of a fixed irreducible representation $V(λ)$ of a complex semi-simple Lie algebra $\mathfrak{g}$ by means of partial fraction decomposition. The formula involves rational functions in rank of $\mathfrak{g}$ many variables which are easier to determine than the weight multiplicities of $S^N V(λ)$ themselves. We compute those rational functions in some interesting cases. Furthermore, we introduce a residue-type generating function for the weight multiplicities of $S^N V(λ)$ and explain the connections between our character formula, vector partition functions and iterated partial fraction decomposition.

We construct a large class of examples of the cyclic sieving phenomenon by expoiting the representation theory of semi-simple Lie algebras. Let $M$ be a finite dimensional representation of a semi-simple Lie algebra and let $B$ be the associated Kashiwara crystal. For $r\ge 0$, the triple $(X,c,P)$ which exhibits the cyclic sieving phenomenon is constructed as follows: the set $X$ is the set of isolated vertices in the crystal $\otimes^rB$; the map $c\colon X\rightarrow X$ is a generalisation of promotion acting on standard tableaux of rectangular shape and the polynomial $P$ is the fake degree of the Frobenius character of a representation of $\mathfrak{S}_r$ related to the natural action of $\mathfrak{S}_r$ on the subspace of invariant tensors in $\otimes^rM$. Taking $M$ to be the defining representation of $\mathrm{SL}(n)$ gives the cyclic sieving phenomenon for rectangular tableaux.

We address the study of controllability of a closed quantum system whose dynamical Lie algebra is generated by adjacency matrices of graphs. We characterize a large family of graphs that renders a system controllable. The key property is a novel graph-theoretic feature consisting of a particularly disordered cycle structure. Disregarding efficiency of control functions, but choosing subfamilies of sparse graphs, the results translate into continuous-time quantum walks for universal computation.

We propose a generalization of the topological vertex, which we call the "non-commutative topological vertex". This gives open BPS invariants for a toric Calabi-Yau manifold without compact 4-cycles, where we have D0/D2/D6-branes wrapping holomorphic 0/2/6-cycles, as well as D2-branes wrapping disks whose boundaries are on D4-branes wrapping non-compact Lagrangian 3-cycles. The vertex is defined combinatorially using the crystal melting model proposed recently, and depends on the value of closed string moduli at infinity. The vertex in one special chamber gives the same answer as that computed by the ordinary topological vertex. We prove an identify expressing the non-commutative topological vertex of a toric Calabi-Yau manifold X as a specialization of the closed BPS partition function of an orbifold of X, thus giving a closed expression for our vertex. We also clarify the action of the Weyl group of an affine A_L Lie algebra on chambers, and comment on the generalization of our results to the case of refined BPS invariants.

The diamond cone is a combinatorial description for a basis in a indecomposable module for the nilpotent factor n+ of a semi simple Lie algebra. After N.J. Wildberger who introduced this notion for sl(3), this description was achevied by N. Bel Baraka, N.J. Wildberger and D. A. for sl(n) and by B. Agrebaoui and ourselves for the rank 2 semi-simple Lie algebras. In the present work, we generalize these constructions to the Lie algebras sp(2n). The symplectic semi-standard Young tableaux were defined by C. de Concini, they form a basis for the shape algebra of sp(2n). We introduce here the notion of symplectic quasi-standard Young tableaux, these tableaux describe the diamond cone for sp(2n).
Combinatorics of $(\ell,0)$-JM partitions, $\ell$-cores, the ladder crystal and the finite Hecke algebra
The following thesis contains results on the combinatorial representation theory of the finite Hecke algebra $H_n(q)$.
In Chapter 2 simple combinatorial descriptions are given which determine when a Specht module corresponding to a partition $λ$ is irreducible. This is done by extending the results of James and Mathas. These descriptions depend on the crystal of the basic representation of the affine Lie algebra $\widehat{\mathfrak{sl}_\ell}$. In Chapter 3 these results are extended to determine which irreducible modules have a realization as a Specht module. To do this, a new condition of irreducibility due to Fayers is combined with a new description of the crystal from Chapter 2. In Chapter 4 a bijection of cores first described by myself and Monica Vazirani is studied in more depth. Various descriptions of it are given, relating to the quotient $\widetilde{S_\ell}/{S_\ell}$ and to the bijection given by Lapointe and Morse.

In this note we shall study the Witten multiple zeta function associated to the Lie algebra so(5) defined by Matsumoto. Our main result shows that its special values at nonnegative integers are always expressible by alternating Euler sums. More precisely, every such special value of weight w>2 is a finite rational linear combination of alternating Euler sums of weight w and depth at most two, except when the only nonzero argument is one of the two last variables in which case $ζ(w-1)$ is needed.
Representations of Lie Algebras and Coding Theory
Linear codes with large minimal distances are important error correcting codes in information theory.Orthogonal codes have more applications in the other fields of mathematics. In this paper, we study the binary and ternary orthogonal codes generated by the weight matrices on finite-dimensional modules of simple Lie algebras. The Weyl groups of the Lie algebras act on these codes isometrically. It turns out that certain weight matrices of $sl(n,\mbb{C})$ and $o(2n,\mbb{C})$ generate doubly-even binary orthogonal codes and ternary orthogonal codes with large minimal distances. Moreover, we prove that the weight matrices of $F_4$, $E_6$, $E_7$ and $E_8$ on their minimal irreducible modules and adjoint modules all generate ternary orthogonal codes with large minimal distances. In determining the minimal distances, we have used the Weyl groups and branch rules of the irreducible representations of the related simple Lie algebras.

We introduce the notion of a chopped and sliced cone in combinatorial geometry and prove two structure theorems for the number of integral points in the individual slices of such a cone. We observe that this notion applies to weight multiplicities of Kac-Moody algebras and Littlewood-Richardson coefficients of semisimple Lie algebras, where we obtain the corresponding results.

If X is the complement of a hypersurface in P^n, then Kohno showed that the nilpotent completion of the fundamental group is isomorphic to the nilpotent completion of the holonomy Lie algebra of X. When X is the complement of a hyperplane arrangement A, the ranks phi_k of the lower central series quotients of the fundamental group of X are known for isolated examples, and for two special classes: if X is hypersolvable (in which case the quadratic closure of the cohomology ring is Koszul), or if the holonomy Lie algebra decomposes in degree three as a direct product of local components. In this paper, we use the holonomy Lie algebra to obtain a formula for phi_k when A is a subarrangement of A_n. This extends Kohno's result for braid arrangements, and provides an instance of an LCS formula for arrangements which are not decomposable or hypersolvable.
On Borel complexity of the isomorphism problems for graph-related classes of Lie algebras and finite p-groups

We reduce the isomorphism problem for undirected graphs without loops to the isomorphism problems for a class of finite dimensional $2$-step nilpotent Lie algebras over a field and for a class of finite $p$-groups. We show that the isomorphism problem for graphs is harder than the two latter isomorphism problems in the sense of Borel reducibility. A computable analogue of Borel reducibility was introduced by S. Coskey, J.D. Hamkins, and R. Miller. A relation of the isomorphism problem for undirected graphs to the well-known problem of classifying pairs of matrices over a field (up to similarity) is also studied.

Let g be a Lie algebra of type A,D,E with fixed Cartan subalgebra h, root system R and Weyl group W. We show that a choice of Coxeter element C gives a root basis for g. Moreover we show that this root basis gives a purely combinatorial construction of g, where root vectors correspond to vertices of a certain quiver $Gammahat$, and show that with respect to this basis the structure constants of the Lie bracket are given by paths in $Gammahat$. This construction is then related to the constructions of Ringel and Peng and Xiao.

The numbers game and Dynkin diagram classification results
The numbers game is a one-player game played on a finite simple graph with certain "amplitudes" assigned to its edges and with an initial assignment of real numbers to its nodes. The moves of the game successively transform the numbers at the nodes using the amplitudes in a certain way. Combinatorial reasoning is used to show that those connected graphs with negative integer amplitudes for which the numbers game meets a certain finiteness requirement are precisely the Dynkin diagrams associated with the finite-dimensional complex simple Lie algebras. This strengthens a result originally due to the second author. A more general result is obtained when certain real number amplitudes are allowed. The resulting graphs are in families, each family corresponding to a finite irreducible Coxeter group. These results are used to demonstrate that the only generalized Cartan matrices for which there exist finite edge-colored ranked posets enjoying a certain structure property are the Cartan matrices for the finite-dimensional complex semisimple Lie algebras. In this setting, classifications of the finite-dimensional Kac--Moody algebras and of the finite Coxeter and Weyl groups are re-derived.

In this paper we study ad-nilpotent ideals of a complex simple Lie algebra $\ccg$ and their connections with affine Weyl groups and nilpotent orbits. We define a left equivalence relation for ad-nilpotent ideals based on their normalizer and generators, and prove that the equivalence relation is compatible with the left cell structure of affine Weyl group of $\ccg$ and Lusztig's star operator for type $\tilde A_{n-1}$.
