Bell polynomials appear in several combinatorial constructions throughout mathematics. Perhaps most naturally in the combinatorics of set partitions, but also when studying compositions of diffeomorphisms on vector spaces and manifolds, and in the study of cumulants and moments in probability theory. We construct commutative and noncommutative Bell polynomials and explain how they give rise to Faà di Bruno Hopf algebras. We use the language of incidence Hopf algebras, and along the way provide a new description of antipodes in noncommutative incidence Hopf algebras, involving quasideterminants. We also discuss Möbius inversion in certain Hopf algebras built from Bell polynomials.
Bell polynomials in combinatorial Hopf algebras
Partial multivariate Bell polynomials have been defined by E.T. Bell in 1934. These polynomials have numerous applications in Combinatorics, Analysis, Algebra, Probabilities, etc. Many of the formulae on Bell polynomials involve combinatorial objects (set partitions, set partitions in lists, permutations, etc.). So it seems natural to investigate analogous formulae in some combinatorial Hopf algebras with bases indexed by these objects. The algebra of symmetric functions is the most famous example of a combinatorial Hopf algebra. In a first time, we show that most of the results on Bell polynomials can be written in terms of symmetric functions and transformations of alphabets. Then, we show that these results are clearer when stated in other Hopf algebras (this means that the combinatorial objects appear explicitly in the formulae). We investigate also the connexion with the Fa{à} di Bruno Hopf algebra and the Lagrange-B{ü}rmann formula.

The generalized Dehn-Sommerville relations determine the odd subalgebra of the combinatorial Hopf algebra. We introduce a class of eulerian hypergraphs that satisfy the generalized Dehn-Sommerville relations for the combinatorial Hopf algebra of hypergraphs. We characterize a wide class of eulerian hypergraphs according to the combinatorics of underlying clutters. The analogous results hold for simplicial complexes by the isomorphism which is induced from the correspondence of clutters and simplicial complexes.

A vector species is a functor from the category of finite sets with bijections to vector spaces; informally, one can view this as a sequence of $S_n$-modules. A Hopf monoid (in the category of vector species) consists of a vector species with unit, counit, product, and coproduct morphisms satisfying several compatibility conditions, analogous to a graded Hopf algebra. We say that a Hopf monoid is strongly linearized if it has a "basis" preserved by its product and coproduct in a certain sense. We prove several equivalent characterizations of this property, and show that any strongly linearized Hopf monoid which is commutative and cocommutative possesses four bases which one can view as analogues of the classical bases of the algebra of symmetric functions. There are natural functors which turn Hopf monoids into graded Hopf algebras, and applying these functors to strongly linearized Hopf monoids produces several notable families of Hopf algebras. For example, in this way we give a simple unified construction of the Hopf algebras of superclass functions attached to the maximal unipotent subgroups of three families of classical Chevalley groups.

A vector species is a functor from the category of finite sets with bijections to vector spaces (over a fixed field); informally, one can view this as a sequence of $S_n$-modules. A Hopf monoid (in the category of vector species) consists of a vector species with unit, counit, product, and coproduct morphisms satisfying several compatibility conditions, analogous to a graded Hopf algebra. A vector species has a basis if and only if it is given by a sequence of $S_n$-modules which are permutation representations. We say that a Hopf monoid is freely self-dual if it is connected and finite-dimensional, and if it has a basis in which the structure constants of its product and coproduct coincide. Such Hopf monoids are self-dual in the usual sense, and we show that they are furthermore both commutative and cocommutative. We prove more specific classification theorems for freely self-dual Hopf monoids whose products (respectively, coproducts) are linearized in the sense that they preserve the basis; we call such Hopf monoids strongly self-dual (respectively, linearly self-dual). In particular, we show that every strongly self-dual Hopf monoid has a basis isomorphic to some species of block-labeled set partitions, on which the product acts as the disjoint union. In turn, every linearly self-dual Hopf monoid has a basis isomorphic to the species of maps to a fixed set, on which the coproduct acts as restriction. It follows that every linearly self-dual Hopf monoid is strongly self-dual. Our final results concern connected Hopf monoids which are finite-dimensional, commutative, and cocommutative. We prove that such a Hopf monoid has a basis in which its product and coproduct are both linearized if and only if it is strongly self-dual with respect to a basis equipped with a certain partial order, generalizing the refinement partial order on set partitions.
Multivariate Stirling Polynomials of the first and second kind

Two doubly indexed families of homogeneous and isobaric polynomials in several indeterminates are considered: the (partial) exponential Bell polynomials $B_{n,k}$ and a new family $S_{n,k}$ such that $X_1^{-(2n-1)}S_{n,k}$ and $B_{n,k}$ obey an inversion law which generalizes that of the Stirling numbers of the first and second kind. Both polynomial families appear as Lie coefficients in expansions of certain derivatives of higher order. Substituting $D^j(\varphi)$ (the $j$-th derivative of a fixed function $\varphi$) in place of the indeterminates $X_j$ shows that both $S_{n,k}$ and $B_{n,k}$ are differential polynomials depending on $\varphi$ and on its inverse $\overline{\varphi}$, respectively. Some new light is shed thereby on Comtet's solution of the Lagrange inversion problem in terms of the Bell polynomials. According to Haiman and Schmitt that solution is essentially the antipode on the Faà di Bruno Hopf algebra. It can be represented by $X_1^{-(2n-1)}S_{n,1}$. Moreover, a general expansion formula that holds for the whole family $S_{n,k}$ ($1\leq k\leq n$) is established together with a closed expression for the coefficients of $S_{n,k}$. Several important properties of the Stirling numbers are demonstrated to be special cases of relations between the corresponding polynomials. As a non-trivial example, a Schlömilch-type formula is derived expressing $S_{n,k}$ in terms of the Bell polynomials $B_{n,k}$, and vice versa.
Deformations of shuffles and quasi-shuffles

We investigate deformations of the shuffl e Hopf algebra structure Sh(A) which can be de fined on the tensor algebra over a commutative algebra A. Such deformations, leading for example to the quasi-shuffl e algebra QSh(A), can be interpreted as natural transformations of the functor Sh, regarded as a functor from commutative nonunital algebras to coalgebras. We prove that the monoid of natural endomophisms of the functor Sh is isomorphic to the monoid of formal power series in one variable without constant term under composition, so that in particular, its natural automorphisms are in bijection with formal diffeomorphisms of the line. These transformations can be interpreted as elements of the Hopf algebra of word quasi-symmetric functions WQSym, and in turn de fine deformations of its structure. This leads to a new embedding of free quasi-symmetric functions into WQSym, whose relevance is illustrated by a simple and transparent proof of Goldberg's formula for the coe cients of the Hausdorff series.

In this paper we give a new proof of the universality of the Tutte polynomial for matroids. This proof uses appropriate characters of Hopf algebra of matroids, algebra introduced by Schmitt (1994). We show that these Hopf algebra characters are solutions of some differential equations which are of the same type as the differential equations used to describe the renormalization group flow in quantum field theory. This approach allows us to also prove, in a different way, a matroid Tutte polynomial convolution formula published by Kook, Reiner and Stanton (1999). This FPSAC contribution is an extended abstract.

In this paper, we define a Hopf algebra structure on the vector space spanned by packed words using a selection-quotient coproduct. We show that this algebra is free on its irreducible packed words. Finally, we give some brief explanations on the Maple codes we have used.

The immaculate basis of the non-commutative symmetric functions was recently introduced by the first and third author to lift certain structures in the symmetric functions to the dual Hopf algebras of the non-commutative and quasi-symmetric functions. It was shown that immaculate basis satisfies a positive, multiplicity free right Pieri rule. It was conjectured that the left Pieri rule may contain signs but that it would be multiplicity free. Similarly, it was also conjectured that the dual quasi-symmetric basis would also satisfy a signed multiplicity free Pieri rule. We prove these two conjectures here.

A non-commutative, planar, Hopf algebra of rooted trees was proposed in L. Foissy, Bull. Sci. Math. 126 (2002) 193-239. In this paper we propose such a non-commutative Hopf algebra for graphs. In order to define a non-commutative product we use a quantum field theoretical (QFT) idea, namely the one of introducing discrete scales on each edge of the graph (which, within the QFT framework, corresponds to energy scales of the associated propagators).
The combinatorial Hopf algebra of motivic dissection polylogarithms

We introduce a family of periods of mixed Tate motives called dissection polylogarithms, that are indexed by combinatorial objects called dissection diagrams. The motivic coproduct on the former is encoded by a combinatorial Hopf algebra structure on the latter. This generalizes Goncharov's formula for the motivic coproduct on (generic) iterated integrals. Our main tool is the study of the relative cohomology group corresponding to a bi-arrangement of hyperplanes.

We construct a new bigraded Hopf algebra whose bases are indexed by square matrices with entries in the alphabet $\{0, 1, ..., k\}$, $k \geq 1$, without null rows or columns. This Hopf algebra generalizes the one of permutations of Malvenuto and Reutenauer, the one of $k$-colored permutations of Novelli and Thibon, and the one of uniform block permutations of Aguiar and Orellana. We study the algebraic structure of our Hopf algebra and show, by exhibiting multiplicative bases, that it is free. We moreover show that it is self-dual and admits a bidendriform bialgebra structure. Besides, as a Hopf subalgebra, we obtain a new one indexed by alternating sign matrices. We study some of its properties and algebraic quotients defined through alternating sign matrices statistics.

The Ben Geloun-Rivasseau quantum field theoretical model is the first tensor model shown to be perturbatively renormalizable. We define here an appropriate Hopf algebra describing the combinatorics of this new tensorial renormalization. The structure we propose is significantly different from the previously defined Connes-Kreimer combinatorial Hopf algebras due to the involved combinatorial and topological properties of the tensorial Feynman graphs. In particular, the 2- and 4-point function insertions must be defined to be non-trivial only if the superficial divergence degree of the associated Feynman integral is conserved.

In order to extend the Schützenberger's factorization, the combinatorial Hopf algebra of the $q$-stuffles product is developed systematically in a parallel way with that of the shuffle product and and in emphasizing the Lie elements as studied by Ree. We introduce the notions of preordered and heap-preordered forests, generalizing the construction of ordered and heap-ordered forests. We prove that the algebras of preordered and heap-preordered forests are Hopf for the cut coproduct, and we construct a Hopf morphism to the Hopf algebra of packed words. Moreover, we define another coproduct on the preordered forests given by the contraction of edges. Finally, we give a combinatorial description of morphims defined on Hopf algebras of forests with values in the Hopf algebras of shuffes or quasi-shuffles.

We generalize chain enumeration in graded partially ordered sets by relaxing the graded, poset and Eulerian requirements. The resulting balanced digraphs, which include the classical Eulerian posets having an $R$-labeling, imply the existence of the (non-homogeneous) ${\bf cd}$-index, a key invariant for studying inequalities for the flag vector of polytopes. Mirroring Alexander duality for Eulerian posets, we show an analogue of Alexander duality for balanced digraphs. For Bruhat graphs of Coxeter groups, an important family of balanced graphs, our theory gives elementary proofs of the existence of the complete ${\bf cd}$-index and its properties. We also introduce the rising and falling quasisymmetric functions of a labeled acyclic digraph and show they are Hopf algebra homomorphisms mapping balanced digraphs to the Stembridge peak algebra. We conjecture nonnegativity of the ${\bf cd}$-index for acyclic digraphs having a balanced linear edge labeling.

In a first part, we formalize the construction of combinatorial Hopf algebras from plactic-like monoids using polynomial realizations. Thank to this construction we reveal a lattice structure on those combinatorial Hopf algebras. As an application, we construct a new combinatorial Hopf algebra on binary trees with multiplicities and use it to prove a hook length formula for those trees.
