Serre depth and local cohomology
We introduce a fundamental homological invariant, called Serre depth, which stratifies Serre's conditions in the same way that depth stratifies the Cohen-Macaulay property. We study the Serre depths of modules over arbitrary Noetherian local rings and over standard graded algebras over a field, extending the polynomial ring case due to Muta and Terai. Under mild hypotheses, we show that the $r$-th Serre depth of a finitely generated module $M$ measures the deviation of $M$ from satisfying Serre's condition $(S_r)$. The main results of the paper can be summarized as follows: (i) We establish the basic properties of Serre depth and prove that it is invariant under completion. (ii) If the base ring $R$ is a homomorphic image of a Gorenstein ring, we show that a finitely generated $R$-module $M$ is equidimensional and satisfies $(S_r)$ if and only if its $r$-th Serre depth equals its Krull dimension. Analogous statements are obtained for schemes. (iii) For a homogeneous ideal in a standard graded polynomial ring over a field, we compare its Serre depths with those of its initial ideal. (iv) We characterize the Serre depths of a monomial ideal in terms of its skeletons and prove that the Serre depths of sufficiently large powers of a monomial ideal stabilize; the proof uses Presburger arithmetic.

Mutual k-Visibility in Graphs
Mutual visibility in graphs requires pairs of vertices to be connected by shortest paths that avoid all other vertices of a prescribed set, a condition that is often overly restrictive. In this paper, we introduce a new variant, called mutual $k$-visibility, which permits at most $k$ internal vertices of the set to lie on a shortest path. This parameterized approach naturally generalizes classical mutual visibility and provides a graded notion of obstruction tolerance. We define the mutual $k$-visibility number $μ_k(G)$ of a graph $G$ and establish its basic properties, including monotonicity and stabilization for sufficiently large values of $k$. Some bounds on $μ_k(G)$ are obtained in terms of diameter, maximum degree, and girth. We further analyze $(X,k)$-visibility in convex graphs and determine exact values of $μ_k(G)$ for some fundamental graph classes. In addition, for block graphs, we introduce the notion of $k$-admissible sets in the associated block--cutpoint tree and show how these sets characterize mutual $k$-visibility in the original graph. Moreover, we present a polynomial-time algorithm, MkV, that decides whether a given subset $S \subseteq V(G)$ forms a mutual $k$-visibility set in $G$. The algorithm has time complexity $O\bigl(|S|(|V(G)|+|E(G)|)+|S|^2\bigr)$.

Plethysm and orbit harmonics
Let $Π_{(b^a)}$ be the locus of unordered set partitions of $[ab]$ with $a$ blocks of size $b$. We embed unordered set partitions of $[n]$ into the affine space $\mathbb{C}^{\binom{[n]}{2}}$ with coordinate ring $\mathbb{C}\Big[\mathbf{x}_{\binom{[n]}{2}}\Big]$. Then, we apply orbit harmonics to $Π_{(2^a)}$ and $Π_{(a^2)}$, yielding graded $\mathfrak{S}_{2a}$-modules whose graded character formulae respectively refine the Schur expansions of $h_a[h_2]$ and $h_2[h_a]$ according to $λ_1$. We further extend this $λ_1$-separation phenomenon to quotients of $\mathbb{C}^{\binom{[n]}{2}}$ where $n$ is odd. Combining $Π_{(b^a)},Π_{(a^b)}$ and orbit harmonics, we propose a conjecture related to Foulkes' conjecture, and we prove the special case $b=2$. We also apply orbit harmonics to the locus $Π_{n,m}$ of unordered set partitions of $[n]$ without blocks of size greater than $m$, yielding a graded $\mathfrak{S}_n$-module $R(Π_{n,m})$. We determine the standard monomial basis of $R(Π_{n,m})$ with respect to any monomial order, as well as its graded character formula.

Discovering hypergeometric series with harmonic numbers via Wilf-Zeilberger seeds
By extracting coefficients from Wilf-Zeilberger pairs with respect to auxiliary parameters, we discover many nontrivial hypergeometric series involving harmonic numbers. In particular, we obtain a rapidly convergent series for the depth-two multiple zeta value $ζ(5,3)$, which appears to be the first result of its kind in the literature. We also experiment with the Hilbert-Poincare series attached with a WZ-seed and conjecture that it admits a remarkably simple form, suggesting the presence of an underlying graded algebra structure behind WZ-seeds.
Constructing Koszul filtrations: existence and non-existence for G-quadratic algebras
Published • View Publication • BIB
Given a standard graded algebra over a field, we consider the relationship between G-quadraticity and the existence of a Koszul filtration. We show that having a quadratic Gröbner basis implies the existence of a Koszul filtration for toric algebras equipped with the degree reverse lexicographic term order and for algebras defined by binomial edge ideals. We also resolve a conjecture of Ene, Herzog, and Hibi by constructing an example where this implication fails. These results are underpinned by algorithms we develop for constructing Koszul filtrations. We also demonstrate the utility of these algorithms on the pinched Veronese algebra.

Triangle equivalences between Gorenstein tiled orders and incidence algebras of posets
We prove that for any $\mathbb{N}$-graded Gorenstein tiled order $A$, the stable category $\underline{\mathrm{CM}}^{\mathbb{Z}}A$ is triangle equivalent to the perfect derived category of the incidence algebra of a finite poset $\mathbb{V}_A^{op}$. Moreover, for a finite poset $P$, we prove that the incidence algebra of $P$ can be realized as the endomorphism algebra of a standard tilting object if and only if $P$ is either empty or has the maximum. We also study the behaviors of the corresponding poset under graded Morita equivalences and coverings of a Gorenstein tiled order. Finally, we classify Gorenstein tiled orders $A$ satisfying $|\mathbb{V}_A^{op}|\leq 3$.

A proof of $J$-generalization of the Rogers-Ramanujan-Gordon identities via commutative algebra
Published • View Publication • BIB
The Rogers-Ramanujan-Gordon identities generalize the classical partition identities discovered independently by L. J. Rogers and S. Ramanujan. Recently, Afsharijoo gave a commutative algebra proof of the Rogers-Ramanujan-Gordon identities. In this article, we present a commutative algebra proof of a broader family of identities introduced by Coulson \textit{et al.}, which includes the Rogers-Ramanujan-Gordon identities as a special case. In the proof, we relate the generating functions associated with these identities to the Hilbert-Poincaré series of suitably constructed graded algebras.

A proof of the Göllnitz-Gordon-Andrews identities via commutative algebra
Published • View Publication • BIB
The Göllnitz-Gordon-Andrews identities generalize the partition identities discovered independently by H. Göllnitz and B. Gordon. In this article, we present a commutative algebra proof of the Göllnitz-Gordon-Andrews identities. More generally, we establish a family of identities, the special cases of which are the Göllnitz-Gordon-Andrews identities. In the proof, we relate the generating functions associated with these identities to the Hilbert-Poincaré series of suitably constructed graded algebras.
Koszul Binomial Edge Ideals
Published in Forum of Mathematics, Sigma , Volume 14 , 2026 , e3 • View Publication • BIB
As the binomial edge ideal of a graph is always generated by homogeneous quadratic polynomials corresponding to the edges of the graph, the question of when a binomial edge ideal defines a Koszul algebra has been studied by many authors ever since the class of ideals was first defined. Several partial results are known, including a characterization of those binomial edge ideals that possess a quadratic Gröbner basis. However, a complete characterization of the graphs determining Koszul binomial edge ideals has remained elusive. Inspired by our recent work characterizing when the graded Möbius algebras of graphic matroids are Koszul, we answer the question once and for all by proving that a graph defines a Koszul binomial edge ideal if and only if it is strongly chordal and claw-free.

Ribbon complexes for the 0-Hecke algebra
We construct explicit tableau-level maps between indecomposable projective modules for the type A 0-Hecke algebra that assemble into canonical split short exact sequences lifting the basic ribbon product rule in NSym via concatenation and near-concatenation. Iterating these maps yields cochain complexes indexed by generalized ribbons; we prove these complexes are acyclic in positive degrees and that their zeroth cohomology is the projective module indexed by full concatenation. We apply these complexes, together with VandeBogert's ribbon Schur module criterion, to prove Koszulness for a naturally defined internally graded algebra object built from the 0-Hecke tower. Finally, we define skew projective modules whose noncommutative Frobenius characteristics realize skewing by fundamental quasisymmetric functions on NSym.
Linear strands of powers of certain binomial edge ideals
We provide a closed formula for the graded Betti numbers in the linear strands of all powers of binomial edge ideals $J_G$ arising from closed graphs $G$ that do not have the complete graph $K_4$ as an induced subgraph. We show that these agree with the corresponding Betti numbers for the powers of the lexicographic initial ideal of $J_G$, thereby confirming a conjecture of Ene--Rinaldo--Terai in a special case.
The orientifold Temperley--Lieb algebra
We construct gradings on the simple modules of 2-boundary Temperley--Lieb algebras and symplectic blob algebras by realising the latter algebras as quotients of Varagnolo--Vasserot's orientifold quiver Hecke algebras. We prove that the symplectic blob algebras are graded cellular and provide a conjectural algorithm for calculating their graded decomposition matrices. In doing so, we give the first explicit family of finite-dimensional graded quotients of the orientifold quiver Hecke algebras, providing a new entry point for the structure of these algebras -- in the spirit of Libedinsky--Plaza's ``blob algebra approach'' to modular representation theory.
Fano compactifications of mutation algebras
In this article, we introduce the notion of mutation semigroup algebras. This concept simultaneously generalizes cluster algebras and semigroup algebras. We show that, under some mild conditions on the singularities, the spectrum $U={\rm Spec}(R)$ of a mutation semigroup algebra $R$ admits a log Fano compactification $U\hookrightarrow X$. The compactification $X$ can be chosen to be a $\mathbb{Q}$-factorial log Fano variety whenever $U$ is $\mathbb{Q}$-factorial. Furthermore, we prove that a $\mathbb{Q}$-factorial klt Fano variety $X$ is of cluster type if and only if its Cox ring ${\rm Cox}(X)$ is a ${\rm Cl}(X)$-graded mutation semigroup algebra. In order to enlighten the previous theorems, we provide several explicit examples motivated by birational geometry, representation theory, and combinatorics.
Tableaux and orbit harmonics quotients for finite transformation monoids
Published • View Publication • BIB
We extend Grood's tableau construction of irreducible representations of the rook monoid and Steinberg's analogous result for the full transformation monoid. Our approach is characteristic-free and applies to any submonoid $\mathcal{M}(n)$ of the partial transformation monoid on an $n$-element set that contains the symmetric group. To achieve this, we introduce and study a functor from the category of rational representations of the monoid of $n \times n$ matrices to the category of finite dimensional representations of $\mathcal{M}(n)$. We establish two branching rules. Our main results describe graded module structures of orbit harmonics quotients for the rook, partial transformation, and full transformation monoids. This yields analogs of the Cauchy decomposition for polynomial rings in $n\times n$ variables.
Quasipolynomial behavior via constructibility in multigraded algebra
Piecewise quasipolynomial growth of Presburger counting functions combines with tame persistent homology module theory to conclude piecewise quasipolynomial behavior of constructible families of finely graded modules over constructible commutative semigroup rings. Functorial preservation of constructibility for families under local cohomology, $\operatorname{Tor}$, and $\operatorname{Ext}$ yield piecewise quasipolynomial, quasilinear, or quasiconstant growth statements for length of local cohomology, $a$-invariants, regularity, depth; length of $\operatorname{Tor}$ and Betti numbers; length of $\operatorname{Ext}$ and Bass numbers; associated primes via $v$-invariants; and extended degrees, including the usual degree, Hilbert-Samuel multiplicity, arithmetic degree, and homological degree.

Persistent commutative algebra on graphs and hypergraphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
We introduce a persistent commutative algebra for studying the algebraic and combinatorial evolution of edge ideals of graphs and hypergraphs under filtration. Building on the Persistent Stanley--Reisner Theory (PSRT), we develop the notion of persistent edge ideals and analyze their graded Betti numbers across the filtration of graphs or hypergraphs. To enable this analysis, we establish a persistent extension of Hochster's formula, providing a functorial correspondence between algebraic and topological persistence. We further examine the behavior of Betti splittings in the persistent setting, proving a general inequality that extends the classical splitting result to the filtration of monomial ideals. Motivated by graph-theoretic interpretations, we introduce persistent minimal vertex covers, which encode the temporal structure of combinatorial dependencies within evolving graphs or hypergraphs. Applications to alignment-free genomic classification and molecular isomer discrimination demonstrate the interpretability and representatbility of persistent edge ideals as algebraic invariants, bridging combinatorial commutative algebra and data science.

Antichain cutsets in real-ranked lattices
We show that in a rank supersolvable lattice that is graded by a bounded real interval, any antichain cutset is a level set for some appropriately constructed grading. As a consequence, given an antichain cutset in any of the measurable Boolean lattice, a continuous partition lattice, or a continuous projective geometry, we may find a grading in which the cutset is a level set.

On strongly Koszul algebras and tidy Gröbner bases
Strongly Koszul algebras were introduced by Herzog, Hibi and Restuccia in 2000. The goal of the present paper is to provide an in-depth study of such algebras and to investigate how strong Koszulness interacts with the existence of a quadratic Gröbner basis for the defining ideal. Firstly, we prove that the existence of a quadratic revlex-universal Gröbner basis with a strong sparsity condition (that we name "tidiness") is a sufficient condition for strong Koszulness, and exhibit several concrete examples arising from determinantal objects and Macaulay's inverse system. We then prove that there exist standard graded algebras that are strongly Koszul but do not admit a Gröbner basis of quadrics even after a linear change of coordinates, thus answering negatively a question posed by Conca, De Negri and Rossi. As a bonus, we prove that strong Koszulness behaves well under tensor and fiber products of algebras and illustrate how Severi varieties and Macaulay's inverse system interact to produce examples of strongly Koszul algebras with a geometric flavor.

Segre powers of posets preserve EL-shellability
Published • View Publication • BIB
For a bounded and graded poset $P$, we show that if $P$ is EL-shellable, then so is its $t$-fold Segre power $P^{(t)}=P\circ \cdots \circ P$ ($t$ factors), as defined by Björner and Welker [J. Pure Appl. Algebra, 198(1-3), 43--55 (2005)]. Our EL-labeling leads to formulas for the rank-selected invariants of $P^{(t)}$, generalising those given by Stanley for the subspace lattice [J. Combinatorial Theory Ser. A, 20(3):336-356, 1976].

Barile-Macchia Resolutions and the closed neighborhood ideal
We investigate the minimal free resolutions of closed neighborhood ideals of graphs within the framework of Barile-Macchia (BM) resolutions. We show that for any tree $T$, the closed neighborhood ideal $NI(T)$ is bridge-friendly, and hence its BM resolution is minimal. The combinatorial structure of trees further allows us to construct a maximal critical cell of size $α(T)$, leading to the equality $\mathrm{pdim}(R/NI(T)) = α(T)$, where $α(T)$ denotes the independence number of $T$ and $\mathrm{pdim}$ is the projective dimension. Using Betti splitting techniques, we also obtain explicit formulas for the graded Betti numbers of $NI(P_n)$, where $P_n$ is the path graph on $n$ vertices. Finally, we make some observations on the bridge-friendly condition of the closed neighborhood ideals of chordal and bipartite graphs.
